Mass Effect: Andromeda (2017)
Think of it as Andromeda - stand alone game, not Mass Effect franchise
Ok, I will admit my first play through was a shambles. Half of what makes up the Mass Effect universe was missing. I needed my dose of the Quarians I tell you!
However, on a second playthrough, a colleague convinced me to go in with fresh eyes, just Andromeda no Mass Effect. So I did.....
And my god this game is good. Some obvious ploys and deliberate plot holes ready for the next instalment. Which sadly looks like won't come to fruition. :( But I could have lived with story holes, knowing it will be revealed eventually in further games or DLC.
The combat is fun and worked well, the characters where a little similar to the DA:I group but hey, if it ain't broke why fix it. The voice acting was good and the story kept me interested.
It's a real shame we won't see anymore of Andromeda.
Anthem (2019)
Has potential, shame it's repetitive
For a casually, fill an hour gap in your day. Let's do a mission or two. This game is ok. Maybe that's what BioWare was aiming for. But if you're looking for anything else in you're games, I'd keep a wide birth of Anthem.
Every part of this game seems to have potential but then something just ruins it.
1. Flying is really fun. Except you have to fly to every single mission across really annoying terrain. Then fly to the next part of the mission across really annoying terrain and then.... you get my point. With the overheating aspect it just makes flying a tedious task and no longer fun.
2. Story was just getting started. The story is quite bland but the characters are interesting. Shame the story ends just as it feels worth playing. You finally get through the grind and repetitive missions for something so built up you're starting to enjoy them and then it's just oh so that was it.
3. The game is to updated from players feedback. That's all good for bugs and glitches maybe, even game mechanics but, the 'teaser' they give for 'Act 2' (why they have split the story up to be released over patch's and updates is beyond me, I'm not sure how the player feedback is going to help with that - unless we're writing the story for them or it's just a ploy in thoughts that it will keep players playing) is just, yeah and....? I just felt so disapppinted with it, I just lost all interest in the characters and world. I'd happily watch from Fort Tarsis and do nothing about it.
4. The characters Can potentially be well rounded and lovable. If you excuse the lack luster interactions between your character and them, where they basically talk at you and won't decide anything for themselves without your input about what exactly to do, they feel really well rounded in ways. The fact that the characters all have their own quirks and individuality makes the fact that you can't really do anything beyond listen to them, means you feel like you can't create a friendship (or anything more) with any of them. Making your interactions feel more like a therapy sim then anything else.
I have other things I could say but this is already getting too long. Overall maybe try this game in a few years when it's been updated a few times but for now. Not worth the price tag or time.
Lucifer (2016)
Unexpectedly original
The perfect mix of crime solving and religious education. It doesn't tarnish or offend religion in anyway and picks up on the lesser known figures and stories that are not commonly known.
It philosophically challenges the notions of religion in a clever manner, yet keeping it light hearted and entertaining at the same time.
The subtle writing and amazing acting is what we need more of on tv and not the crap reboots we seemed to be getting lately. I hope it's here to stay!
The Favourite (2018)
Erm really
I had no idea how to feel when I left the cinema. The laughs are awkward, forced and based on slap stick style situations. (Oh funny sex scene, oh funny throwing fruit scene) it was like it couldn't choose a genre. The story is very "all over the place" and basically the style and camera shots are the typical artsy fartsy stuff. Amazing acting for sure, and the overall look at the shift of power is pretty interesting when you think back on it and the lessons you can learn. It was alright the once but my god I would avoid watching again.
I'm probably missing the point, I just want to be entertained. Is that so hard to ask for?
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018)
Just no
Just no, it could have been so much more. Thank god for Jude Law and Eddie Redmayne.
Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey (1993)
The feels are real.
If you're up for tear wrenching, heart crunching adventure about the best pals we as humans can have. Then this film is for you.
Very good at getting even the most hard boiled egg to sweat a little from their eyes!
