Makoo (2021)
Hyper unrealistic
Firstly, it's called Mako but this mutant shark in the movie is bigger than any mako on the planet and looks larger than most great whites as well. Not a diver myself but this group of morons would really have died probably a dozen times before the shark even showed up. The storyline was confused and very unrealistic, like who acts like any of these people? Back to the shark though, that's my biggest gripe....everything they did in the water was wrong, too fast, too slow, too big. These people genuinely ducked down behind a wall so the shark 10m away didn't know they were there. Seemed like the shark was really an afterthought and they through in a bunch of nonsense about award shows and celebrity bs.
The Book of Boba Fett (2021)
Disappointing
Was super excited for this to come out. I tried to tailor back my expectations to a Disney reskin of a great character and I was still really let down. They took the baddest bounty hunter in the galaxy and turned him into just about the weakest warlord you can imagine. I do think most of the Disney films don't do justice to the series with a couple exceptions but this one is a stinker and worse, a big let down.
America: The Motion Picture (2021)
Everything bad that you imagine it's going to be.
If you could wrap up all the hot buzzwords that social media is obsessed with and wrap it in an offensive cartoon, you'd get this. The whole movie is just one eye roll after another, broken up only by frat boy and anti white humor.
Offensive, hypocritical, lame, the points trying to be made are the same bs that's being pushed on the US everyday. Obviously it's a cartoon but it's a fiction based on a fictional foundation. Just bad.
De slag om de Schelde (2020)
Fantastic story telling
This is the story of a lesser known battle (only by comparison with other larger battles) which was part of Operation Market Garden. Great story telling, the stories of the individuals who made heroic sacrifices and suffered terrible untold consequences during WWII are innumerable. This movie does a great job of telling the part of the locals who's lesser roles were incredibly important to a larger picture. Great movie to watch, I see myself as not easily impressed but this was a beautiful movie. Everyone was a part of this war and it's great to see another perspective of that.
Another Life (2019)
Poorly executed
I watched the whole first season, it does not get better. Honestly a pretty cool story concept and even though it's not the best visually, it's still enjoyable in that sense.
The crew is the biggest letdown. These are supposed To be the worlds best and brightest and they're all young, confused hot heads, none of them are prepared for space and possible alien contact. The AI is actually a nice casting assist to the crew but he can "actually feel" who programs that into an AI and why?? The incompetence and emotional immaturity of the crew is the cause of most of the drama and it detracts from the story in every episode. There are constant unrealistic situations happening, it's like watching big social brother in space.
The Commander of the ship is generally alright but she has the tactical abilities of a squirrel.
It's a shame really because I like the concept of the show but I just wish the writers had tried to meet the obstacles presented with even a shred of realism.
Single Parents (2018)
Good concept
Pretty funny, I like the concept and also like when shows model real life issues. Watching this show though felt like there was way too much social agenda jammed between jokes. Not everyone should be expected to buy into someone else's way of thinking just because it's disguised with humor. I got most of the way through 2 seasons when I just thought, that's enough of these jabs. Maybe if it showed that there isn't only one way to raise your kid, it would have been better to me.
Aladdin (2019)
Meh
I grew up watching the original, I knew this would be its own unique film and not a shot for shot remake and I was skeptical about Will Smith playing genie but I did my best to go in open minded, curious to see a modern spin.
That being said, I was really not impressed. I was really disappointed from the very beginning. I felt like I was watching a released to TV Nickelodeon movie. Aladdin and Jasmine both performed poorly in my mind, it may have been a directing decision but either way it was the kind of acting I expect to see on a kids tv show. Jafar was by far a bad casting choice, he looked and sounded like something from SpyKids 9 and didn't even feel like a bad guy except in a few parts. Though I do like Will Smith most of the time, the guy did not sing well and the animated characters Iago and Abu looked terrible.
I feel like Disney, long ago went away from doing justice to their classics and now they are more interested in hooking the next generation of Disney kids and creating a "new" feel to Disney. I accepted this long ago but it still feels like Disney today try's a little too hard to be PC.
The pros though, I felt like Disney tried to go for a more culturally accurate portrayal of the film and personally I thought that was great (even with a few glaring inaccuracies). The animated sets and locations were visually good to look at, I was even mildly impressed with the added songs and Will Smith's personal touch on the genies humor was a refreshingly nice surprise in this movie.
To make it simple, I didn't feel nostalgic watching it at all. That's ok but even as a stand-alone movie, it did not impress. The film was more of a television movie with an over inflated animation budget. If you've never seen any version of Aladdin before and don't expect much in acting, then you can probably really enjoy it.
The Grinch (2018)
Cheap
I went in with an open mind and I honestly really enjoyed the animation. Very cute movie. I didn't like the grinchs voice and I didn't appreciate changing the narrative of Cindy Lou's family to a single mother theme. I get the message but I think it distracted from the original meaning of the grinch story line. I also felt that the movie was full of fluff that just dragged out the movie. Keep it simple, keep it charming, too much was changed to make a new narrative.
