There's nobody who enjoys a good Western more than I do, and with the recent excitement I've experienced in seeing a faithful, brilliant adaptation of True Grit (easily the best Western of the past 15 years), I thought it would be a joy to look back at the 10 Best Westerns of All-Time.

1. The Searchers (1956)

Passed | 119 min | Adventure, Drama, Western

94 Metascore

An American Civil War veteran embarks on a years-long journey to rescue his niece from the Comanches after the rest of his brother's family is massacred in a raid on their Texas farm.

Director: John Ford | Stars: John Wayne, Jeffrey Hunter, Vera Miles, Ward Bond

Votes: 96,328

It's a crime how under-appreciated this film was upon its initial release (ZERO Oscar nominations). This is the iconic John Ford-John Wayne collaboration at its very peak. It's flawlessly directed, acted, shot (Monument Valley has never looked more magnificent), edited, and is also beautifully rich in undertones that only heighten the viewer's interest. If ever there were evidence of the supremacy of The Admiral and The Duke in the genre of the Old West, it lies with this film.

2. High Noon (1952)

PG | 85 min | Drama, Thriller, Western

89 Metascore

A town Marshal, despite the disagreements of his newlywed bride and the townspeople around him, must face a gang of deadly killers alone at "high noon" when the gang leader, an outlaw he "sent up" years ago, arrives on the noon train.

Director: Fred Zinnemann | Stars: Gary Cooper, Grace Kelly, Thomas Mitchell, Lloyd Bridges

Votes: 110,206 | Gross: $9.45M

A tense Cold War allegory and claustrophobic thriller set a against a hot, stark Western town where all hope for a better future lies with one determined man, High Noon is a grounded, especially gritty, unconventional (for it's time) Western that, to this day, remains one of the gutsiest films ever made.

3. Once Upon a Time in the West (1968)

PG-13 | 166 min | Western

82 Metascore

A mysterious stranger with a harmonica joins forces with a notorious desperado to protect a beautiful widow from a ruthless assassin working for the railroad.

Director: Sergio Leone | Stars: Henry Fonda, Charles Bronson, Claudia Cardinale, Jason Robards

Votes: 349,166 | Gross: $5.32M

It's amazing how such an iconic film can have such a simple, accessible story with such easily identifiable characters as a solemn anti-hero, a cocky bandit, a humble widow, and a corrupt, menacing villain. The beauty of this film lies with the way this plot unfolds. As the quintessential Spaghetti Western, it does not waste dialog but instead use it sparingly and carefully to present an awesome aura of grit and ruthless Old West mentality.

4. Stagecoach (1939)

Passed | 96 min | Adventure, Drama, Western

93 Metascore

A group of people traveling on a stagecoach find their journey complicated by the threat of Geronimo and learn something about each other in the process.

Director: John Ford | Stars: John Wayne, Claire Trevor, Andy Devine, John Carradine

Votes: 53,788

This was the first great sound Western, as well as the first notable collaboration of John Ford and John Wayne, and first majestic view that 1930s audiences got of Monument Valley. Stagecoach is rich in political subtexts, succeeding as a dynamic allegory for the Great Depression, centering on a mix of lovable (as well as loathsome) characters.

5. Unforgiven (1992)

R | 130 min | Drama, Western

85 Metascore

Retired Old West gunslinger William Munny reluctantly takes on one last job, with the help of his old partner Ned Logan and a young man, The "Schofield Kid."

Director: Clint Eastwood | Stars: Clint Eastwood, Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman, Richard Harris

Votes: 436,296 | Gross: $101.16M

Clint Eastwood's swan song to the genre that transformed him into a bankable star is also his most layered, grounded, and overall human venture into the Old West. Here, he's an aged, flesh-and-blood shell of his former ruthless self, and his slow transformation into the legendary gunfighter of an earlier time, with its ups and downs, is heartbreaking to watch, but the end result is a frightening joy for any enthusiast of the gritty Western.

6. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962)

Approved | 123 min | Drama, Western

94 Metascore

A senator returns to a Western town for the funeral of an old friend and tells the story of his origins.

Director: John Ford | Stars: James Stewart, John Wayne, Vera Miles, Lee Marvin

Votes: 82,319

From one swan song to another, as this film represents the last great John Ford-John Wayne collaboration after more than two decades of being the undisputed champions of the genre. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance represents one last victory for the Ford-Wayne school of the Old West before the emergence of the new generation of outlaw tough-guys like Lee Marvin (appearing in what was his star-making turn in this film), and effectively evokes the emotion of the passing of the Old West in the face of the welcome, yet crushing, transition to a new class of civilization.

7. The Wild Bunch (1969)

R | 135 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

98 Metascore

An aging group of outlaws look for one last big score as the "traditional" American West is disappearing around them.

Director: Sam Peckinpah | Stars: William Holden, Ernest Borgnine, Robert Ryan, Edmond O'Brien

Votes: 90,390 | Gross: $12.06M

8. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)

Approved | 178 min | Adventure, Western

90 Metascore

A bounty hunting scam joins two men in an uneasy alliance against a third in a race to find a fortune in gold buried in a remote cemetery.

Director: Sergio Leone | Stars: Clint Eastwood, Eli Wallach, Lee Van Cleef, Aldo Giuffrè

Votes: 811,482 | Gross: $6.10M

9. Shane (1953)

Not Rated | 118 min | Drama, Western

85 Metascore

A weary gunfighter in 1880s Wyoming begins to envision a quieter life after befriending a homestead family with a young son who idolizes him, but a smoldering range war forces him to act.

Director: George Stevens | Stars: Alan Ladd, Jean Arthur, Van Heflin, Brandon De Wilde

Votes: 44,153 | Gross: $20.00M

10. My Darling Clementine (1946)

Passed | 97 min | Drama, Romance, Western

After their cattle are stolen and their brother murdered, the Earp brothers have a score to settle with the Clanton family.

Director: John Ford | Stars: Henry Fonda, Linda Darnell, Victor Mature, Cathy Downs

Votes: 25,761
