Director: Floyd Mutrux | Stars: Tim McIntire, Fran Drescher, Jay Leno, Laraine Newman

Votes: 1,356

With performances by Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis filmed, I think this would make a kickin' addition to the Criterion library, particularly since one of the cornerstones of the Criterion oeuvre is that they're all about great soundtracks.

2. The Decline of Western Civilization (1981)

93 Metascore

A look into the Los Angeles punk rock scene, that was largely ignored by the rock music press of the time.

Votes: 4,868

3. Grosse Pointe Blank (1997)

R | 107 min | Action, Comedy, Crime

76 Metascore

Martin Blank is a professional assassin. He is sent on a mission to a small Detroit suburb, Grosse Pointe, and, by coincidence, his ten-year high school reunion party is taking place there at the same time.

Director: George Armitage | Stars: John Cusack, Minnie Driver, Dan Aykroyd, Joan Cusack

Votes: 99,641 | Gross: $28.01M

"Grosse Pointe Blank" had the inconvenience of coming out at a time when DVD was making it's presence known in the home video market. Even with a killer soundtrack (which Criterion often seems to notice in it's films), it's the performances and the movie's sense of humor that carry it through. John Cusack plays a career assassin who returns to the hometown he skipped 10 years ago for his high school reunion, one last job and the girlfriend he stood up on prom night. Minnie Driver plays the jilted ex, Alan Arkin as a fearful psychiatrist and Dan Aykroyd as a nemesis out to take down Cusack's character. It's like Lloyd Dobler went homicidal.

4. High Fidelity (2000)

R | 113 min | Comedy, Drama, Music

79 Metascore

Rob, a record store owner and compulsive list maker, recounts his top five breakups, including the one in progress.

Director: Stephen Frears | Stars: John Cusack, Iben Hjejle, Todd Louiso, Jack Black

Votes: 189,810 | Gross: $27.29M

Criterion has always appreciated a good movie soundtrack, and for a movie that so celebrates music, I can't think of a more appropriate entry than "High Fidelity". Unfortunately the DVD for HF is not that great. It's got a terrible menu and some bland special features that are just begging for more. It also helps that director Stephen Frears has another entry into the Criterion Collection with "The Hit". But this film features a winning performance from Cusack in what is sure to be one of his greatest roles. Not to mention some guy named Jack Black pops up in this film, in what is undoubtedly his breakout role (that he nearly turned down from Cusack and the co-writers who wrote the part with him in mind) that Disney executives were reluctant to cast him. Fortunately he was in the film and literally stole the rug right out from underneath everyone else.

5. A Better Tomorrow (1986)

Not Rated | 95 min | Action, Crime, Drama

78 Metascore

A reforming ex-gangster tries to reconcile with his estranged policeman brother, but the ties to his former gang are difficult to break.

Director: John Woo | Stars: Lung Ti, Leslie Cheung, Chow Yun-Fat, Emily Chu

Votes: 25,471

John Woo has made a lot of movies but it's "A Better Tomorrow", his first action film that really put him at the top of the list as an original.

6. A Better Tomorrow II (1987)

Not Rated | 105 min | Action, Crime, Drama

A restauranteur teams up with a police officer and his ex-con brother to avenge the death of a friend's daughter.

Director: John Woo | Stars: Leslie Cheung, Chow Yun-Fat, Lung Ti, Dean Shek

Votes: 11,321

7. The Insider (1999)

R | 157 min | Biography, Drama, Thriller

85 Metascore

A research chemist comes under personal and professional attack when he decides to appear in a 60 Minutes exposé on Big Tobacco.

Director: Michael Mann | Stars: Russell Crowe, Al Pacino, Christopher Plummer, Diane Venora

Votes: 180,255 | Gross: $28.97M
