Even up to this day, you still hear from people just how magnificent this performance is. I think what elevated the performance was not only the fact that it was heartfelt, genuine and eerily real, Meryl showed her mark as an actress capable of making smart and refreshing choices in her performance.

From the first frame up to the last, my eyes were just so fixed on her. From the time that I saw Natalie Portman in Leon, I knew she had it in her to become a great actress. I was much disappointed she didn't win for Closer. But there's no denying her with an Oscar for this one. The movie would be an utter failure without her in the lead.

A lot of people say she won mostly because they made her ugly. To me, it wasn't that, it was mostly because but she completely lost herself to the character.

Another stellar performance from her: THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE; This is where I actually took notice of her.

Before this movie, Cate was definitely not on my radar and since then, she has emerged to be one of Hollywood's best and consistent character actress but this is by far my favorite performance of her. She perfectly embodied the transformation of a young girl into a stone cold but regal queen.

A lot of people will disagree but say what you will, this is a damn good performance. I went out of the theater so inspired with a new perspective of Julia Roberts. I didn't know she had it in her to pull off this kind of role.

IMO, Annette should have won her Oscars for this movie. It was her career best and she has delivered consistent performances since this movie but just not enough to top this.

During the same year, Kate delivered the Oscar winning performance for The Reader. But it was her performance as April Wheeler that caught my attention and shook me to the core. Every moment that she was on film just evoked and breathe desperation... like it's almost watching someone trapped in a closed space gasping for air. Her character was not an easy person to sympathize with but Kate did it in such a way that I fully understood what her character was feeling and going through.
