Top Performances of 2014

for BIRDMAN

I badly wanted to hate his performance before viewing the movie because I've never been a fan. But we gotta give credit where it's due. He really delivered the performance of his lifetime. It was gritty, gutsy, raw and impassioned. I didn't like the movie as well as other critics did but this performance is just a joy to watch.

for WHIPLASH

If you look through his filmography, he really hasn't done anything substantial until this role. It's hard to deny that he was almost born to play this role. He embraced it HARD. If you ask me, there is no movie if he didn't deliver the atmosphere that the movie required. And deliver he did and then some!

for FOXCATCHER

I must admit when I watched the trailer of Foxcatcher, I was really rooting for Steve Carrell to be the centerpiece of the movie. He was just so different from what we've seen before. But after sitting through the movie, I felt more enamored with the holistic portrayal that Tatum delivered. Was it because I expected too much of Carrell and didn't expect that much from Tatum? I don't think so. If you watch this movie intently, you'll see that the character that really came to life was Tatum's. Here he gave life to a man with a single and simple dream, one who didn't care for anything else but achieving greatness. He had so much innocence in him until DuPont created a God-like persona in him that drove him to the edge. Tatum delivered every moment with a surgical knife precision.

And I disagree with all the award giving bodies, the nomination spot should be given to him over Carrell.
