Best of 2013

Spike Jonze's marvelously plotted HER just barely missed out, as did Eran Creevy's slick action thriller WELCOME TO THE PUNCH and Ramin Bahrani's underrated drama AT ANY PRICE. As far as big studio pictures went, 2 GUNS was the most fun; Gore Verbinski's THE LONE RANGER had more than its fair share of problems, but was still leagues better than any of the year's summer tentpoles.

The worst film of the year was undoubtedly A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD; never has a more repulsive creation been committed to celluloid, but the summer magician caper NOW YOU SEE ME came pretty damn close. Most of the year's big tentpoles were pretty forgettable but ELYSIUM will probably go down as the most infuriating. Beyond that, Ridley Scott's ambitious THE COUNSELOR failed as spectacularly as any in recent memory, and the prize for the flat out ugliest film of the year goes to Jeff Wadlow's abysmal KICK-ASS 2.

1. Ain't Them Bodies Saints (2013)

R | 96 min | Crime, Drama, Romance

74 Metascore

The tale of an outlaw who escapes from prison and sets out across the Texas hills to reunite with his wife and the daughter he has never met.

Director: David Lowery | Stars: Rooney Mara, Casey Affleck, Ben Foster, Nate Parker

Votes: 22,800 | Gross: $0.39M

The Hunt may be more formally skillful, but the film that had the greatest impact on me was without a doubt David Lowery's exquisite, Malick-ian take on the lovers-on-the run picture; rarely has a movie felt less like it was filmed in a place (Texas) than simply borne out of it.

2. The Hunt (2012)

R | 115 min | Drama

77 Metascore

A teacher lives a lonely life, all the while struggling over his son's custody. His life slowly gets better as he finds love and receives good news from his son, but his new luck is about to be brutally shattered by an innocent little lie.

Director: Thomas Vinterberg | Stars: Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Bo Larsen, Annika Wedderkopp, Lasse Fogelstrøm

Votes: 364,503 | Gross: $0.69M

Intelligent, beautiful, and finally, frightening, The Hunt is perhaps the greatest attack on societal insecurities and the dangers of persecution in recent memory. Vinterberg is back and Mads Mikkelsen reminds us that he is nothing less than a titan of his field.

3. The Place Beyond the Pines (2012)

R | 140 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

68 Metascore

Two men and their sons must deal with the unforeseen consequences of their actions.

Director: Derek Cianfrance | Stars: Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Eva Mendes, Craig Van Hook

Votes: 290,457 | Gross: $21.38M

A spectacular tale of fathers and sons that hearkens back to the Hollywood filmmaking of the 70's that perhaps is not as distant a memory as previously thought.

4. Prisoners (2013)

R | 153 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

70 Metascore

When Keller Dover's daughter and her friend go missing, he takes matters into his own hands as the police pursue multiple leads and the pressure mounts.

Director: Denis Villeneuve | Stars: Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Viola Davis, Melissa Leo

Votes: 809,920 | Gross: $61.00M

Noir-y, dark, and uncompromising, both morally and stylistically, this is the kind of film the studios don't make anymore. At two-and-half hours, it never bores, weaving a tangled and complex narrative unrivaled in cinemas today. Roger Deakins also provides some of the best cinematography of the year.

5. 12 Years a Slave (2013)

R | 134 min | Biography, Drama, History

96 Metascore

In the antebellum United States, Solomon Northup, a free Black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery.

Director: Steve McQueen | Stars: Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Kenneth Williams, Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt

Votes: 741,461 | Gross: $56.67M

A stunner - it's the film that needed to be made, but that's not to say watching it is a chore. It's brutal, ugly, and at times unforgiving, but how could it not be? McQueen and his crew (particularly his DoP Sean Bobbitt) have crafted a paradoxically beautiful, almost impeccable picture.

6. Mud (2012)

PG-13 | 130 min | Adventure, Drama

76 Metascore

Two young boys encounter a fugitive and form a pact to help him evade the vigilantes that are on his trail and to reunite him with his true love.

Director: Jeff Nichols | Stars: Matthew McConaughey, Tye Sheridan, Jacob Lofland, Sam Shepard

Votes: 188,889 | Gross: $21.59M

The McConaissance continues with perhaps its finest entry yet. The bittersweet growing pains of adolescence have never felt truer as they have in this hard-bitten Southern fairy tale.

7. American Hustle (2013)

R | 138 min | Crime, Drama

90 Metascore

A con man, Irving Rosenfeld, along with his seductive partner Sydney Prosser, is forced to work for a wild F.B.I. Agent, Richie DiMaso, who pushes them into a world of Jersey powerbrokers and the Mafia.

Director: David O. Russell | Stars: Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence

Votes: 500,389 | Gross: $150.12M

It's far from the most essential film here but maybe the most enjoyable - Russell and his impeccable cast of players deliver a wild, blow-dried, and pomaded ode to depravity and immorality.

8. The World's End (2013)

R | 109 min | Action, Comedy, Sci-Fi

81 Metascore

Five friends who reunite in an attempt to top their epic pub crawl from twenty years earlier unwittingly become humanity's only hope for survival.

Director: Edgar Wright | Stars: Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Martin Freeman, Rosamund Pike

Votes: 298,262 | Gross: $26.00M

A fitting conclusion to the Cornetto trilogy -an uproarious and irreverent installment that courses with a sense of deep melancholy that seems oddly fitting.

9. Maniac (2012)

Not Rated | 89 min | Horror, Thriller

47 Metascore

As he helps a young artist with her upcoming exhibition, the owner of a mannequin shop's deadly, suppressed desires come to the surface.

Director: Franck Khalfoun | Stars: Elijah Wood, Nora Arnezeder, America Olivo, Megan Duffy

Votes: 40,365 | Gross: $0.02M

In the era of found footage and cheap, moronically superficial horror movies, it's refreshing to see one so truly deranged, especially when it's made with such expert care as this.

10. The Angels' Share (2012)

R | 101 min | Comedy, Crime, Drama

66 Metascore

Narrowly avoiding jail, new dad Robbie vows to turn over a new leaf. A visit to a whisky distillery inspires him and his mates to seek a way out of their hopeless lives.

Director: Ken Loach | Stars: Paul Brannigan, John Henshaw, Roger Allam, Gary Maitland

Votes: 27,013 | Gross: $0.30M

It's a testament to the weakness of 2013 as a whole that this picture made it onto the list, but regardless it's a massively enjoyable caper that accomplishes the rare feat of mixing pathos and comedy effectively.
