My absolute favorite THOH. What causes this one to squeak by THOH V as my favorite is the setting: it was (Halloween day thankfully,) 1991, The Simpsons' popularity was at an all-time high, the segments, particularly Bart's with that iconic scream, made (and still make) me laugh out loud and my older brother and sister were Bart and Lisa for Halloween (and as luck would have it, the same ages as the two of them), making it all the more special to me.

And in case you're wondering who I was that year, I was Paula Abdul. Don't ask.

Not a terrible episode, as I loved the "Tweenlight" segment and rank it the best one of the night, but "Master and Cadaver"? Trash. I know I'll be pilloried for saying this, but I don't care about Maggie Simpson. They try to make her into some kind of a badass, but she's so bland and useless. "Oh, get it? Her one joke is that she's a baby! Ha ha ha!" Either make her talk or reduce her screen time! I'm sick of her lack of character development.

Why is this ranked so low, you ask? Simple: that damn dolphin segment. I HATE that one! I know people go nuts for it, but I found it to be too cruel and unfunny, especially for the last segment of the episode. The other segments also were pretty cruel (as common for this era), but still had enjoyable moments.

Director: Jim Reardon | Stars: Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith

Votes: 2,313

Ugh, what a washout. The first segment was, once again, way too mean-spirited (even for Homer) and the last segment was an uninspired and lazy parody of Harry Potter, which is not in any way helped by the writers ADMITTING that they had little knowledge of the franchise in the first place! Thank goodness for "House of Whacks" and Pierce Brosnan.

27. The Simpsons (1989– )
Episode: Treehouse of Horror XVII (2006)

Directors: David Silverman, Matthew Faughnan | Stars: Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith

Votes: 1,921

Absolutely terrible. I didn't laugh once. You know you have a problem when a segment involving Homer eating everyone (including him own family) is the highlight of the night. Also, is it just me or does anything spoofing "The War of the Worlds" tend to suck? We have the last segment featuring a wasted plotline that surrounds the cool space aliens instead of just a cameo (and the equally wasted appearance of a great voice actor in Maurice LeMarche), the second WOTW film and that terrible episode of "Cold Case" (their 100th one overall, for some reason.)
