According to a January 29, 1990 Los Angeles Times Archives/ United Press International Article that was possibly published at 12 AM Pacific Time, the late actress was buried in a pink gown "not for her (Gardner's) beauty, but for her gentle soul" in a cherry casket next to her mother in a Magnolia-infested part of Smithfield, North Carolina's Sunset Memorial Park, Johnston County, NC, US.

None of the people Gardner worked with in Hollywood attended the funeral, yet over 2'000 fans of Gardner's attended it and Carmen Varga, Gardner's housekeeper, placed a bouquet of flowers on her casket before it was placed into the ground.

Less than a dozen other bouquets where placed next to the grave with a Wicker Basket full of yellow roses with a simple card stating "I love you." That was from singer Lena Horne.
