Mario Van Peebles made a big mark on cinema following in his father’s footsteps, Melvin Van Peebles, to be a unique, prominent voice for the African-American community in cinema. He would make many appearances as an actor, including working with fellow gunslinger Clint Eastwood on Heartbreak Ridge, as the sword-wielding Kane in Highlander: The Final Dimension, and taking on the monumental task of portraying Malcolm X in the Michael Mann film, Ali. However, in 1991, New Jack City, which co-stars Ice-t, would put Van Peebles on the map as a director, and he would parlay his run with movies like Panther and the 1993 western film, Posse, in which he also starred.

Reach for the sky cause Mario Van Peebles has returned to the old West! In 1993, Mario Van Peebles dabbled in the Western genre with Posse, which he had written, directed, and starred in. Now, Peebles has gotten back into the director’s chair for a new feature he wrote called Outlaw Posse. The trailer has now been released courtesy of Quiver Distribution and features Mario Van Peebles acting alongside his son, Mandela, who also plays his son in the movie. This keeps the tradition of the Van Peebles filmmaking lineage rolling along as Mario was also heavily involved with his father, Melvin Van Peebles’ film career. Mario would even make a biopic where he portrayed his own father with the film Baadasssss!, which is a play on the title of Melvin’s famous movie Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song.

"Whatever you two geniuses scheming up, count me in!" Quiver Distr. has revealed an official trailer for a kooky, zany western thriller comedy titled Outlaw Posse, arriving in theaters in March. It's the latest film directed by and written by and starring actor / filmmaker Mario Van Peebles, son of the legendary Melvin Van Peebles. This kind of feels like Van Peebles trying to create a modern update on Blazing Saddles, but it doesn't have the same comedic genius as that film. In the untamed Wild West of 1908, men in power take advantage of an unfair world. Renegade cowboy Chief, eager to restore balance, assembles a daring group of outcasts and saddles up on a cross-country odyssey to reclaim stolen gold in unsettled territory. The big ensemble features William Mapother, John Carroll Lynch, D.C Young Fly, Mandela Van Peebles, Amber Reign Smith, Neal McDonough, Allen Payne, Cam Gigandet, and M. Emmet Walsh,...

Allen Payne is a well-known actor who started his career in the late 1980s. His first film role came at 21 with the movie Rooftops after which he went on to build an impressive career. This was the start of Payne appearing in many notable movies. However, Payne stopped acting when the show The House of Payne ended. This wasn’t because the show ended, but because his mom passed away in 2012. Payne later explained that his intention was to learn more about himself. It’s important for an actor to understand himself, especially when people are always watching them. Payne...

Angela Bassett is now one of the most revered and respected actresses in Hollywood after multiple decades in the business. There were only two years between her breakthrough role in "Boyz n the Hood," to her Oscar-nominated role as Tina Turner in "What's Love Got to Do with It." Bassett not winning that year has long been considered one of the worst snubs in Oscar history. Despite Bassett's deserved stature in the industry, being tasked with finding substantial roles in 12 good movies was harder than anticipated. This goes to show that however talented and skilled a Black actress is, she will not necessarily get the opportunities for leading roles that she should rightfully have.
Despite this, Bassett has still worked with a wide range of filmmakers, including John Sayles, Wes Craven, John Singleton, Forest Whitaker, and Spike Lee, and has taken on a wide range of roles. She has worked with Laurence Fishburne three times,...

On March 8, 1991, Mario Van Peebles’ feature directorial debut “New Jack City” premiered at the Mann Village Theatre in Westwood. On Saturday, a little more than 30 years later, Van Peebles walked the red carpet outside the very same cinema — now renamed the Regency Village Theatre — for a special screening of his classic crime thriller, hosted by the American Cinematheque.
Van Peebles was joined for the special event by “New Jack City” star Vanessa Estelle Williams, plus his children — Mandela and Makaylo, who joined their dad onstage to record his introduction to the movie, as well as Marley and Maya.
As Van Peebles reflected on the full-circle moment, he called out one of the gangster movie’s most famous (and Bible-borrowed) lines, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” and the massive crowd yelled back, “Yes I am.” The call and response is a reference to the iconic scene where (spoiler alert...

With its string of inspirational and heartening films, Lifetime presents The Fight that Never Ends, a film inspired by the real experiences of Joanne Beck, who serves as producer of the movie.
When times are bleak, it's nice to have uplifting and inspirational stories told, and this one fits the bill.
The Fight That Never ends is about community, the efforts of hardworking and selfless individuals who hope to instill change and curb the gang violence that is riddling a neighborhood.

He’s slated to launch a slew of shows on Bet and its new streaming service Bet Plus, including the White House drama, “The Oval,” and “Sistas.”

It’s just exciting, but I also realized what I wanted to do and be and the amount of production that I could turn out. One network wasn’t going to be enough.”

Warner Bros. is looking to produce another remake and this one will be one of the 1991 neo-noir gangster film New Jack City. The remake is being written by Snowfall actor and filmmaker Malcolm M. Mays.
The original film was directed by Mario Van Peebles and had a great cast that included Wesley Snipes, Ice-t, Chris Rock, Flavor Flav, Allen Payne, Judd Nelson and Peebles.
In case you’ve never seen the film, “Snipes played arrogant New York City drug lord Nino Brown during the 1980s crack epidemic. Ice-t portrayed Scotty Appleton, a detective who goes undercover in Nino’s gang, the Cash Money Brothers, to bring down the drug lord for taking the life of his mother. Rock was “Pookie” Benny Robinson, a former stick-up kid who becomes homeless and poor after Appleton shoots him in the ankle. Pookie becomes a crack addict and eventually a police informant and infiltrates the Cash Money Brothers.

Even though grossly maligned when released in October 1995, Vampire in Brooklyn has become something of an unfortunate punch line in the careers of both its director and star. Although it’s been misunderstood and wrongly forced to take a time out in the horror genre’s “Shame Corner” over the last two decades, I still adore the hell out of Vampire in Brooklyn.
Starring Eddie Murphy, Angela Bassett, Allen Payne, Kadeem Hardison and John Witherspoon, and directed by Wes Craven, Vampire in Brooklyn is pretty much Nosferatu meets Coming to America with a Blaxploitation twist. Murphy plays a smooth-talking vampire from the Caribbean, named Maximillian, who must sire a companion to spend eternity with before the passing of the next full moon or he’ll be doomed to walk the Earth alone forever. As it turns out, a troubled NYPD Detective (played by Bassett) is destined to be Max’s...

Written by Nelson George, Robert LoCash and Chris Rock
1993, USA
Back in 1993, two low-budget mockumentary-style comedies based on Gangsta Rap were released. The better of the two is Rusty Cundieff’s Canadian indie gem Fear of a Black Hat, chronicling the rise and fall of Nwh, a not particularly talented but always controversial hip-hop group. The second was CB4, about the rise to fame of Mc Gusto, Stab Master Arson, and Dead Mike, members of the rap group Cell Block 4. The similarities between the two are uncanny, so much so that one would think someone got their greedy hands on the other script and decided to shamefully steal the idea.
Written by music critic Nelson George and Saturday Night Live’s Chris Rock (who also plays the lead role of Albert, a k a Mc Gusto), this spoof on gangsta rap targets controversial rap groups (specifically N.W.A.) and deliberately provocative,...

Tyler Perry has entertained audiences for years now with many film and television programs one of which is House of Payne and Volume Six of the popular show is now out on DVD. The series airs on the cable channel TBS and is sort of a cross between The Honeymooners and Family Matters. The show is the brainchild of Perry and has been on TV since 2007. It is currently in its seventh season.
House of Payne revolves around a middle-class African-American family that lives in a suburban part of Atlanta, Georgia. The family consists of many multi-generational members. They include patriarch Curtis Payne (Lavan Davis), a grumpy overweight fire chief who mirrors Ralph Kramden. The matriarch Ella (Cassi Davis) is more down to earth and caring and is the perfect yin to Curtis’ yang.
There’s C.J. (Allen Payne), Curtis and Ella’s nephew who also works in the firehouse.

Just killing some time tonight I happened to do some channel surfing and came across an episode of Tyler Perry’s sit-com House of Payne that had just begun. Hearing nothing but the absolutely worst things about it, I decided, what the hell, I’ll give it a shot. I’ll try almost anything once.
Turns out I have no clue what all the negative comments were about. Yeah, the premise was absolutely trite, but I found it absolutely no worse than the dozens of other black sit-coms that have come and gone. So where’s all this evidence I’ve read about it being so incredibly awful? I came in after the credits, so I don’t know who directed it, but I do know that Kim Fields (Living Single, and Tootie from The Facts of Life – I know she must hate it when people say that) has been...

Dear Tyler Perry Fans,
I understand you find the characters Mr. Perry has created in his films and television programs relatable, that’s fine, and to that quality of Mr. Perry’s work, I do agree. He has indeed written a world full of familiar archetypes that fit squarely into the culture at which they’re aimed. Unfortunately, that quality alone cannot excuse the major failings of his creative work. He stacks his films with incapable actors. He employs subpar writers to craft the comical turns of his features. He directs any comedy present in the poor writing into the ground, depriving the situations of any comedy through poor editing and ill-timed delivery. House of Payne is no exception. Perry’s insistence on using some of the worst talent in the primary roles makes the show worthy of disdain, no matter how relatable.

With each of Tyler Perry’s films scoring respectable box office earnings on their opening weekends, the argument that he’s filling a niche market long ignored by Hollywood merits closer consideration. Has Hollywood been ignoring the African-American viewer? The notion does carry some weight. Compared to all the films that skew primarily Caucasian in casting and targeted demographic, films made by Hollywood closely resembling Perry’s in any given year can generally be counted on one hand. Obviously this doesn’t mean that the average film can’t be enjoyed by people of all races, creeds and upbringings – but there are undeniable variations in family customs between say an Anglo Saxon Catholic couple and an African-American Baptist couple. Both groups may be able to relate to Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts blushing on the screen, but there will be an inevitable gap in how each pair will relate to what they see on screen.
