Director Kevin Reynolds’ graphic, gritty desert combat movie is about a lost tank in the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan. Besides being 98 an unpleasant downer, it now reminds us that we got into the exact same fix just a decade after the Russkis threw in the towel. Cruel Russki soldiers commit atrocities against vengeful Moujahedin resistance, and there’s really nobody to root for. George Dzundza, Jason Patric, Steven Bauer and Stephen Baldwin endure a rough ordeal out in the dirt, hoping for the next war movie breakthrough hit.

Stanley Kubrick’s contribution to great cinema of the 1970s offers his vision of what an epic should be. Transported by images that recall great paintings of the period, and Kubrick’s new approaches to low-light cinematography, we witness a rogue’s progress through troubled times. And even Ryan O’Neal is good!

There have been more than a few bad movies about the Holocaust; perhaps we were long overdue for a bad movie about the Holodomor, the catastrophic forced famine that killed millions of Ukrainians in the early 1930s. In rides Bitter Harvest, a gooey Canadian-produced soap opera that tackles mass starvation and Stalinism with pretty faces and several spoonfuls of schmaltz. Even if it weren’t about an atrocity, this training-wheels Doctor Zhivago would still be lame: the tale of a country boy who goes off to Kiev to become a painter, gets washed out by the tyranny of cheery socialist realist art (which the movie ironically resembles), and eventually finds his way home to rescue his sweetheart and give a budget-conscious what for to some sneering Soviets. The one thing it has going for it is the competent cinematography of Douglas Milsome, a former associate of Stanley Kubrick (he shot...

The Dungeons and Dragons 2-Movie Collection on Blu-ray set consists of D and D 1 and 2, the later being my favorite of the series even though it was a straight to TV movie a few years back.
Synopsis:
Who will be the dominator of worlds? Destiny belongs to those who dare in Dungeons & Dragons, a thunderous fantasy adventure inspired by the popular role-play game. Thora Birch and Marlon Wayans are among the forces of good defending the Empire of Izmer from the diabolical grasp of mage Profion (Jeremy Irons). The past is prologue when the evil returns years later to avenge what transpired in Izmer. Can five young stalwarts thwart the fiendish traps, spectral ghouls and mighty armies of hell? The answer ? and the thrilling spectacle ? comes in Dungeons & Dragons: Wrath of the Dragon God.

There are a lot of bad movies out there. Some are bad and some are just plain awful. Dungeons & Dragons and its made-for-dvd sequel D&D: Wrath of the Dragon God fall under this category. Both films based on the popular fantasy role-playing game of the same name have now been released in a Blu-ray 2-movie pack. Joy.
The first movie D&D takes place in the mythical Empire of Izmer, a place where two classes of people inhabit the land, Mages and commoners. The Mages possess special magical powers and the commoners live in poverty and often resort to crime. An over the top Jeremy Irons stars as an evil Mage named Profion who plans to dethrone the ruler of the land Empress Savina played by a wooden Thora Birch. Aware of Profion’s sinister plot, Savina must obtain the Rod of Savrille, a powerful scepter which controls dragons.

[Our thanks to Mike Leeder of Impact Magazine for passing on his first impressions of Jean Claude Van Damme’s The Eagle Path.]
Hi Todd, I thought you and everybody at Twitch might be interested in hearing a bit more about Jean-Claude Van Damme’s 2nd directorial outing “The Eagle Path”, formerly known as “Full Love’.
I had the great pleasure of watching the first cut of the movie recently, with Jean-Claude in Hong Kong literally a day or so after he completed editing. I’d previously visited the set in Thailand and been shown several scenes during editing, but this was the first time he screened the full cut of the movie to anyone.
The plot has already been discussed in a couple of newspieces, and as for the title change, “The Eagle Path” title is very relevant when you see the movie. The movie looks very big, with cinematography by Doug Milsome who shot “Full Metal Jacket’, and some great camerawork from Ross Clarkson. The film has a very good ‘visual...
