A killer showroom dummy ends up as little more than a gimmick in Micheal Bafaro’s film, which fails to engage emotionally or psychologically
As well as its obvious inspiration, It Follows, Micheal Bafaro’s aspiring urban-myth horror is unfortunately reminiscent of the shortlived UK gameshow Touch the Truck. After being shadowed by a leering mannequin that eventually slaughters all who see it, student Frankie (Kelly Bastard) and friends belatedly realise that the only way to stop it teleporting around merrily is never to take their eyes off it. Sleep is no longer an option.
In fact, we are nearly two-thirds in to Don’t Look Away when the rules are disclosed; until then, the mannequin’s modus operandi is not clear. “It moves without moving. One minute it’s there, the next …” Opening with brutal authority with an intro in which the dummy is liberated from the back of a...

Level 33 Entertainment will be giving the supernatural horror film Don’t Look Away a theatrical release in the U.S. and Canada on September 1st – and with that date just a few weeks away, a trailer for the film has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.
Written, directed, and produced by the filmmaking duo of Micheal Bafaro and Michael Mitton, Don’t Look Away stars Kelly Bastard in what is said to be the “breakout role” of Frankie, “a young woman being stalked by a dark figure as her loved ones are ruthlessly murdered one by one. The problem? No one believes what she’s seeing.” Here’s the full synopsis: Ever since Frankie laid her eyes on what appears to be a killer mannequin, it shows up everywhere she goes and gruesomely slashes her friends without a trace, until they finally learn its secret… anyone...

For those unfamiliar with Tubi, they are a completely free streaming service which has an absolutely ridiculous selection of films, many of which offered in high quality high-definition transfers. For those not in the know, they are also one of the services that pays filmmakers the best and are very open to smaller budget films. They do present the films with ads, but that is a small price to pay for a great selection of fun films. Scrolling their offerings by genre is also the closest one can get to the video store experience of yesteryears. Here’s a list of five fun action movies on Tubi, kind of like a “Staff Suggestions” section at your local Mom & Pop video store.

*an online screener of this film was provided by XLRator Media. Director: Micheal Bafaro. Writers: Micheal Bafaro and Evan Tylor. Cast: Anna Hutchison and Andrea Whitburn. You can prepare for a lot of car metaphors as Micheal Bafaro's (The Devil's Ground) Wrecker crashes into this review. Full of wheel spinning, Wrecker's plot moves ahead as if in rush hour traffic. This two note script does little to inject any life into the screen. Meanwhile, the film's reality is broken up with the introduction of several faux conflicts. Amoral characters Emily (Anna Hutchison) and Leslie (Andrea Whitburn) cannot outpace an old tow truck, despite driving a modern sports car. Scenes are sped up to create tension. But, Wrecker still offers a lackluster time, in which the viewer's patience is tested and broken; there is not even a single car crash to gawk at, despite the film's title. Emily is the protagonist in the film.

Hey creeps, today’s lil interview is with the die-rector of the new horror on the highway flick Wrecker, Micheal Bafaro! So why not buckle up and join us as we speed along at 666mph in the ol’ Horror Hearse!
Famous Monsters. What inspired you to barrel headlong into Wrecker?
Micheal Bafaro. I’ve had a lifelong love of the open road. I think it’s symbolic of the freedom and adventure that America is suppose to offer, and it’s something that connects with youth across generations. At first you’re surrounded by familiar sights, but as time passes and you get further down the road, you start to find that the familiar is gone and you’re left feeling alone and isolated. I originally got the idea for Wrecker while on a road trip doing research for a different film. I stopped off at a gas station and...

Coming to theaters, VOD, and iTunes tomorrow with the gas pedal to the floor and one eye on the rearview mirror is Wrecker, a new road trip horror film from XLrator Media. For our latest Q&A feature, we caught up with Wrecker co-writer/director Micheal Bafaro.
Thanks for taking the time to converse with us, Micheal. How did you come up with the idea for your latest film, Wrecker?
Micheal Bafaro: I’ve always been inspired by the open road. For me, it’s the ultimate embodiment of freedom, adventure, and optimism. However, it can also be unpredictable as one moves away from familiar surroundings into the unknown. I’ve got an active imagination and I’m always having story ideas pop into my head. Highways themselves are an iconic part of the North American landscape and culture, and I felt that it was time to do a road film of my own.

In 1983, viewers saw the tire-squealing rage of a jealous ’58 Plymouth Fury in John Carpenter’s Christine, based on the Stephen King novel. Three years later, King himself directed Maximum Overdrive, in which everything from pop machines to semi-trucks followed their own deadly agendas. Now XLrator Media is tossing their film reel into the ring of vehicle-centric horror films with Wrecker, due out next summer.

Never mind the upcoming mega movie events of the summer! It's time to make you aware of an all new event whose combined budget probably wouldn't even be Man of Steel's craft services budget. Wolverine's maybe, but definitely not Man of Steel.
From the Press Release
In the 1950s and 1960s, drive-ins began to spread like wildfire, increasing to more than 4,000 locations. The new sites may have begun as a venue to watch films, but interestingly, the main films that were shown were mostly considered to be B films. Patrons enjoyed them regardless and remained enthralled with what they saw – so much so that the drive-in became a part of American culture where people came together to socialize with each other. It was an experience all of its own making and is considered an important part of Americana.
Today there are fewer than 400 drive-ins currently in operation across the United States.

A pair of fright favorites have been announced for Blu-ray release later this year. Dark Sky Films gave Fango the word that Henry: Portait Of A Serial Killer will have its hi-def debut September 29, while Universal Home Entertainment issues the modern zombie-comedy classic Shaun Of The Dead (previously available on a now-out-of-print HD-DVD) on Blu-ray September 22. Contents have yet to be announced, but presumably these will contain all the previous DVD special features; retail price for each is $29.98.
Speaking of Dark Sky, the company also let us know that it has bumped its release of the British gorefest Gnaw to October 13, and confirmed that the much-lauded Deadgirl will hit disc September 15. You can find articles on both these films in Fango #285, which hits the stands any day now.
Anchor Bay issues the well-reviewed Australian psychological chiller Acolytes July 28. Directed by Jon Hewitt from a script he wrote with S.P. Krause and Shayne Armstrong,...

An interesting array of genre titles hit home video this week including the long awaited release of Howard McCain's outrageous Vikings vs. Alien flick, Outlander, coming from Weinstein Company. The theatrical mis-treatment of this film caused a bit of a fanboy furor so it'll be interesting to see how well it does on home video.
Speaking of fanboys, Kyle Newman's loving ode to the Star Wars generation, Fanboys, which is also arriving courtesy of Weinstein Company, drops today. Loaded with inside jokes that only someone with too many 12 inch action figures would truly find endearing, Fanboys may not have been the comedy of the year, but it sure took me back to 1999 when, as a complete Star Wars freak, there was only one film that really mattered.
Coming from Magnet Releasing this week is a film that truly brings a tear to my eye when I think of...

Written and directed by Micheal Bafaro, the film stars Daryl Hannah, Leah Gibson, Lee Tomaschefski, Jeb Beach and Luke Camilleri. Below you'll find an official synopsis and teaser trailer that still reflects the old title and was obviously used for the film market circuit.
