The morning before the theatrical release at Metrograph of the 4K restoration of A Bigger Splash, director/cinematographer Jack Hazan met with me for a conversation at the Ludlow Hotel. We discussed the initial influence of Bernardo Bertolucci's Last Tango In Paris and where Marlon Brando is for him, Michelangelo Antonioni's L'Eclisse, L'Avventura and Blow-Up, Robert Bolt, Joe Strummer of The Clash in Rude Boy, David Hockney and synaesthesia, and a surprising shower scene that Jack Hazan calls an antidote to Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho.

Though many are familiar with its namesake work, David Hockney’s famous 1967 painting of a splash rising up from a placid California swimming pool, fewer know Jack Hazan’s too-little-seen 1974 documentary of the same name. An early entry into the documentary/narrative hybrid genre, the film “A Bigger Splash” honors Hockney and his mesmerizing work with a portrait of the artist worthy of his creative genius.
A new 4K restoration of this masterpiece of queer cinema will play New York City’s Metrograph later this month, offering audiences a rare chance to catch this seminal work on the big screen. IndieWire is debuting the brand new trailer exclusively below.
Shot over three years in the early 1970s, the official synopsis calls “A Bigger Splash” “an improvisatory narrative-nonfiction hybrid featuring Hockney, a wary participant, as well his circle of friends, many subjects of his portraits, including British textile designer Celia Birtwell,...

A note to the actress who tried to steal Sheryl Crow‘s leather jacket at an MTV awards afterparty circa, well, a long time ago: She hasn’t forgotten. And you wouldn’t forget either if someone tried to snag your $3,500 leather jacket – after all, it was the first big purchase Crow made after hitting it big in the music industry.
Since the early ’90s, Crow has been writing hit after hit, touring the world and performing in incredibly memorable outfits that still have a home in her closet. “My closet is just ridiculous… but I have my archives,” she tells People.

Despite all the hoo-ha over films such as Blue Jasmine and Stoker contemporary is still pretty much overlooked as a form of costume design. If it’s invisible, well, nobody notices it, and if it’s designer it becomes all about ‘the fashion’ (Omg Totes Want Those Shoes). We are currently in an age when costume design means period and sci-fi. It comes to the extent that if a costumer wants to tell a story through contemporary attire, he/she needs either a director with a key grasp of semiotics, or one that doesn’t care less about semiotics and offers a degree of autonomy. Watching About Time we presume that Richard Curtis is one of the former. Apparently he was specific on his needs to costume designer Verity Hawkes, yet gave her room to breathe and develop the project independently. Basically he let Hawkes do her job. What...

She’s never been shy about showing off her assets, and last night (January 22) Kelly Brook gave the folks at the 2014 National Television Awards in London, England an eyeful.
The busty 34-year-old model/actress showed up at the event wearing a sheer black Ossie Clark dress and no bra, which turned out to be a niptastic combination.
When the bright camera lights washed over her cleavage-bearing gown, Kelly suffered a wardrobe malfunction, though she didn’t seem to mind.
Ms. Brook simply smiled for the shutterbugs and kept right on talking before heading inside the O2 London.

Ah, how we love the mornings when we find ourselves staring for an hour at a celebrity’s chest and playing “nipple/not nipple.” Today’s subject: Nicole Scherzinger, who wore quite the stunning black William Vintage Ossie Clark dress to the National Television Awards in London on Wednesday night. Like many a black gown before hers, this one turned sheer in the glare of a million camera bulbs. And naturally, many of our fellow gossip sites are calling out “wardrobe malfunction!” But we’re feeling a little contrary. Mostly because we have boobs, and our nipples have no reflective quality the way Nicole’s appear to in this photo, and even in the one below, where the flash is a little dimmer.
Also, look at the size of those things. No, our theory is that she actually did perform the flash test, and donned a pair of nipple covers...

(Jack Hazan, 1973, BFI, 15)
Among the most strikingly original films on a modern artist (as arresting as Clouzot's Le Mystère Picasso), Jack Hazan's picture takes its title from David Hockney's most famous painting and is neither fly-on-the-wall cinema vérité nor formal documentary. It's a film shot over three years in the early 1970s by a film-maker (credited as co-writer, director and director of photography) fascinated by Hockney's portraits, made with the artist's partial and reluctant participation, and without any specific scenario or agenda. From the semi-improvised, unscripted material, Hazan carved a story tracing the disintegration of the affair between Hockney and his lover and model, the Californian Peter Schlesinger. Incorporated into this episode narrative are members of the flamboyant, charismatic, hard-working artist's circle, most notably Henry Geldzahler, Patrick Proctor, Celia Birtwell and Ossie Clark, the subjects of several key portraits.
Hockney was initially horrified by the movie's intimacy, but...

★★★☆☆ The BFI reissue of Jack Hazan's fascinating 1974 docudrama A Bigger Splash exploring David Hockney's life between 1971-3 - after he separated from partner Peter Schlesinger - could not be more timely as it coincides with the opening of his new show at the Royal Academy of Arts, entitled A Bigger Picture. A Bigger Splash was filmed over three years by Hazan, bringing together some of the most famous figures of the 1970s London art scene including Ossie Clark, Celia Birtwell and art dealer John Kasmin.

As far as Rolling Stones concert films go, Ladies and Gentlemen The Rolling Stones (out today on DVD and Blu-ray) doesn’t have the elemental status of the Maysles Brothers’ dark verite Gimme Shelter. It lacks the notoriety of Robert Frank’s unreleased but often bootlegged Cocksucker Blues. It has no marquee director like Hal Ashby (1983’s Let’s Spend the Night Together) or Martin Scorsese (2008’s Shine A Light). It’s been on ice for the entire home entertainment era, but it merits a place among the better known classics because you simply will not find the Rolling Stones looking or sounding any better than they do here. Director Rollin Binzer spent over a year editing footage intended for the Frank film. “Then Rolling Stones Records President Marshall Chess realized they’d never be able to release Cocksucker Blues,” Binzer told me by phone last week, “they already at...

Less a costume movie and more a fashion one, Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (1970) is typical of its celebrated naughty director Russ Meyer in all the best possible ways.
Meyer fills the screen with a beautiful cast in cute outfits and expects us to take it all seriously. Thing is, he actually has something serious to say. Emphatically not a sequel to Valley of the Dolls made in 1967 (although that was its original intention), this softcore send-up was filmed soon after the tragic murder of actress Sharon Tate – star of Valley of the Dolls. Here Myer admonishes not only the perils of fame itself, but of believing it.
Bursting with hedonistic fun before a shockingly violent conclusion, Beyond the Valley of the Dolls is simply alive with colourful sixties outfits. Mainly designed by David Hayes (as ‘De Graff of California’), it does help that his ensembles are worn by...

Actress Anna Friel defied the ongoing economic slump by splashing out $12,000 (£8,000) during a single visit to a vintage goods fair.
The Pushing Daisies star recently decided to treat herself with a trip to a retro fashion fair in London, and spared no expense as she snapped up pricey new additions to her wardrobe.
A source tells Britain's Daily Express, "Vintage junkies love this fair because it has loads of samples by designers such as Alexander McQueen up for grabs and Anna was buying like there was no tomorrow.
"She bought dresses, twinsets and luggage and her bill came to £8,000. There was no stopping her."
But there was one item with a hefty price tag Friel couldn't seem to justify.
The insider adds, "She tried on a gorgeous Ossie Clark dress, which looked amazing but didn't quite fit. It was £800 (and) she put it back on the rail."...
