Netflix typically refuses to release its actual viewership numbers to the public, making its weekly top-10 lists a fascinating peek into how streaming services actually operate. Netflix may pour millions into their original programs, but their ten most popular films or TV tend to (at least partly) be 25-year-old movies experiencing a seemingly random renaissance. Case in point: one of the hottest films on Netflix right now is Danny DeVito's 1996 family film "Matilda" based on the 1988 novel by Roald Dahl.
"Matilda," critically acclaimed upon its release, is about the titular young girl (Mara Wilson) who lives with caustic, greedy, tacky, and abusive parents. Her new school is a bleak, Dickensian nightmare overseen by the bestial, cruel Mrs. Trunchbull (Pam Ferris). The only person who treats Matilda with kindness is the put-upon Miss Honey (Embeth Davidtz) who sees how bright and gentle Matilda is.

Why do we find murder mysteries so uniquely relaxing? This is one of the age-old questions about human nature, up there with ‘what is consciousness?’ and ‘why do we keep eating mouldy cheese and fish eggs like it’s a good thing?’ Because, despite the grief and blood and mountains of paperwork that a gruesome murder causes, we simply can’t get enough of curling up on the sofa with a mug of tea and a cosy crime drama to keep us blissfully entertained all the way through to bedtime.
This isn’t a new thing, either: while modern series like Death in Paradise and Shakespeare and Hathaway are the current champions of cosy crime TV, back in the eighties and nineties classics like Murder She Wrote and Hetty Wainthropp Investigates taught us how it’s done. So whether you’re after the latest in the cosy crime genre or some more nostalgic viewing,...

This post contains spoilers for "Children of Men."
One of the greatest movie scenes of the 21st century comes early in the dystopian sci-fi masterpiece "Children of Men," as five characters pile into a car for what initially seems like a blissful ride. Though the near future they inhabit is beset by human infertility, all is going well as our protagonist, Theo (Clive Owen), wakes from a backseat nap and begins playing a game with the mother of his late child, Julian (Julianne Moore). She turns from the passenger's seat, and they blow a ping pong ball back and forth, laughing right up until the moment when a flaming car comes rolling downhill ahead of them, followed by a band of marauders, the Zeds.
What follows next is the kind of movie scene the phrase "tour de force" was invented for. As they took to the road in a modified Fiat Multipla,...

HBO Max has cooked up a slate of several classic films as well as a few newer ones arriving this January. “The Menu” (2022) arrived early in the month after releasing theatrically in November before Thanksgiving. Danny DeVito’s “Matilda” (1996) can contend with Netflix’s new movie musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s book. And while Tom Hanks’ latest role “A Man Called Otto” has hit the box office, several of his films have landed at various streamers if you’re hankering for more after the tear-jearking feature film.
Hitting the sweet spot for dog movie lovers is “Marley and Me,” starring Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston, and the animated wonder “The Book of Life” is also newly added.
Here are some of the best new movies to stream on HBO Max in January 2023.

Plot: Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical is an inspirational musical tale of an extraordinary girl who discovers her superpower and summons the remarkable courage, against all odds, to help others change their stories, whilst also taking charge of her own destiny. Standing up for what’s right, she’s met with miraculous results.
Review: Roald Dahl’s novels have long made for wonderful cinematic adaptations from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory to James and the Giant Peach, The Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Witches, and The Bfg. While Danny DeVito’s 1996 adaptation has remained a cult and nostalgiac favorite for many, the 2011 stage musical brought a more faithful and expansive take on Dahl’s beloved novel about a little girl with big brains and bigger superpowers. In the decade since it hit the stage, an adaptation of Matilda The Musical has been in the works and now has debuted...

By many accounts, Roald Dahl wasn't a very nice person, and it wasn't until I re-read his books for my kids that I realized that his writing had such a mean streak, too. He certainly didn't sugarcoat the world for his younger readers and his magical adventures were filled with neglected kids, bullies of all shapes and sizes, nasty grown-ups, macabre humor, and strange comeuppances. His somewhat bleak view of adulthood was matched by Quentin Blake's scribbly illustrations which highlighted the grotesqueries of his caricatures, such as Aunt Spiker's sharp frame in "James and the Giant Peach," or the general grossness of "The Twits."
Of course, kids have pretty horrible imaginations as well, so it's no wonder Dahl's novels have been cherished favorites for decades. One of his most popular novels, "Matilda," was also one of his last, published just two years before he passed away in 1990. It features...

The children are revolting! Roald Dahl's beloved children's book "Matilda" is getting a new movie adaptation, this time based on the stage musical by Dennis Kelly and Tim Minchin. Directed by Matthew Warchus (who also directed the stage play), "Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical" is coming to Netflix in December, and the streaming service has just released a new trailer.
The film stars Alisha Weir as Matilda Wormwood, a little girl gifted with a genius mind but cursed with truly horrible parents. After living a lonely early life with only books for company, Matilda is sent to Crunchem Hall, a school ruled over by the fiercely authoritarian Miss Trunchbull (Emma Thompson), who despises children and uses her position of power to torture them. The one bright spot at Crunchem is Matilda's teacher, Miss Honey (Lashana Lynch), who does her best to create a oasis of fun and learning for the kids in her class.

Roald Dahl's book-loving, super-powered young heroine Matilda Wormwood is heading back to the big screen. The author's beloved 1988 kids novel "Matilda" was previously adapted into director Danny DeVito's darkly-comical 1996 family movie of the same name, with Mara Wilson starring as Matilda opposite Pam Ferris as Agatha Trunchbull, the tyrannical principal of Crunchem Hall who delights in torturing her students by throwing them like Olympic hammers and subjecting them to twisted, abusive forms of discipline. DeVito and Rhea Perlman also star as Matilda's neglectful, immoral parents, with Embeth Davidtz playing the embodiment of all that is good in Matilda's caring...

Seconds earlier, she was wistfully glancing out of the window at a string of neighboring flats. Seconds before that, she was teetering into her cramped East End home in full dress after an uncomfortable outing to her sister’s in Chigwell. Now she’s pouring four cups of tea for her husband, two sons, and herself. And soon it will be revealed that everything in the flat is secretly broken. Thatcherism is in full swing. Meantime was Mike Leigh’s first foray into film after a decade of cutting his teeth in television. His career roots manifest themselves as a piano-sax theme akin to soaps and a generally unlikeable host of aimless characters. The film is a deliberate blend of both mediums, but the sense of disconnect between the two is well spent here. The camera pans across the kitchen slowly, revealing half-empty condiment bottles beside biscuits and pots. It lingers,...

One thing you learn early on in Tolkien is that it is pronounced “Tol-keen,” contrary to the way many fans have been saying it. That is one of many facts you learn in the J.R.R. Tolkien biopic Tolkien, which covers the early life of the “Lord of the Rings” author. It was not an easy life, as the young Tolkien, played by Nicholas Hoult, endured personal tragedies and hardships, but it was also a time of deep friendship, challenges, growth, and even young love, capped by the singular horrors of World War I, experiences which the author later wove into his fantasy tales of hobbits, elves and the fellowship of a ring.
Actually, Tolkien is more an interesting film than the deeply involving one audience might hope it would be.

As a fan of J.R.R. Tolkien’s work, I’m looking forward to the upcoming biopic Tolkien, which stars Nicholas Hoult as the famed author of the legendary Middle Earth stories. The movie actually looks like it will be really good!
The movie will explore Tolkien’s early life and follow "the formative years of the orphaned author as he finds friendship, love and artistic inspiration among a fellow group of outcasts at school. This takes him into the outbreak of World War I, which threatens to tear the 'fellowship' apart. All of these experiences would inspire Tolkien to write his famous Middle-Earth novels."
Well, Tolkien’s family has made it very clear that they aren’t on board with the film and the estate released a statement saying, "They do not endorse it or its content in any way.”
A representative for the family also said that none of...

J.R.R. Tolkien finds inspiration for his famous novels in friendship, love and war in the new trailer for the upcoming biopic, Tolkien, set to open May 10th.
The clip opens with the young author (played by Nicholas Hoult) discussing how he invented a whole new language with the woman who would become his wife, Edith Bratt (Lily Collins). “Tell me a story,” Edith says, “in any language you want.”

Fox Searchlight has released a new trailer for their fantastic-looking new film Tolkien, which tells the story of legendary Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit author J.R.R. Tolkien. It dives into his life and the things that happened in it that inspired him to create Middle Earth and the stories that filled it.
Nicholas Hoult takes on the role of Tolkien, and the movie looks like an intense and inspiring journey. As a longtime fan of Tolkien’s work, this is a movie that I’ve very much looking forward to watching. As you’ll see, the movie also offers up some beautiful imagery inspired by his epic fantasy stories, like the dragon Smaug, who you can see above.

War, dragons, camaraderie and romance – it’s too soon for another Game of Thrones trailer, so it’s gotta be Tolkien. Fox Searchlight released a second trailer for the upcoming biopic today, giving even more clues about the approach the film will take in chronicling both the life and the imagination of the groundbreaking author of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.
The new trailer begins with a direct-to-camera address from stars Nicholas Hoult and Lily Collins – he plays young John Ronald Reuel Tolkien and she’s Edith Bratt, the woman and muse who’ll become the author’s wife. Two things to note: Hoult, and so Fox Searchlight, intentionally or unintentionally seem to wade into the Spielberg-Netflix brouhaha. “We’re so grateful to be part of this project,” Hoult says, “and we can’t wait for you to see it on the big screen.”

"This is more than just a friendship, it's an alliance. An invincible alliance." Fox Searchlight has debuted the full-length official trailer for Tolkien, the biopic film about beloved author J.R.R. Tolkien (in full: John Ronald Reuel Tolkien), who grew up in both South Africa and Birmingham, England. This trailer follows a brief teaser last month, and the film opens this summer. Nicholas Hoult stars as Tolkien, focusing on his formative years at Pembroke College and as a soldier in World War I, and how those events influenced his work. The full cast includes Lily Collins as his great love Edith Bratt, along with Colm Meaney, Anthony Boyle, Patrick Gibson, Tom Glynn-Carney, Craig Roberts, Laura Donnelly, Genevieve O'Reilly, Pam Ferris, and Derek Jacobi. This is a tremendous trailer, playing up the profoundness of his writing (and his Lord of the Rings stories). Maybe I'm just a sucker for this kind of filmmaking,...

A new Fox Searchlight trailer might have a familiar ring to it, but this journey to Middle-earth comes via the true story of the magical world’s one-of-a-kind creator. Tolkien, in theaters this May, stars Nicholas Hoult as author J.R.R. Tolkien, born in South Africa, raised in England and elevated to immortality on millions of bookshelves around the world with the publications of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Tolkien’s immersive epics and richly realized worlds made his novels international sensations, and his detailed guides to his worlds inspired modern myth-makers like George Lucas, James Cameron, George R.R. Just because Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly are in a film together doesn’t mean it’s going to be any good.
Dr. John Watson (John C. Reilly) very badly wants to take a picture with Queen Victoria (Pam Ferris), who’s visiting his and Sherlock Holmes’ (Will Ferrell) flat in order to insist that they take a case. It’s a tired but tried-and-true kind of comedic template, with a straight woman attempting to keep things serious while the buffoon repeatedly ruins her efforts with gag after gag. Hence Watson’s use of a 19th-century camera like a smartphone on a selfie stick, which then bludgeons Queen Victoria and knocks her out cold.
This is one of many silly scenes that populate Holmes & Watson, Ferrell and Reilly’s first pairing since 2008’s Step Brothers. It’s also representative of just how tired and unoriginal the film’s antics are.

To say that Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly’s latest joint exploit, Holmes and Watson, is an abomination to all senses and a travesty to cinema would be to understate the truly abysmal and quite frankly condescending nature of the final product.
Subjectively the comedic prowess and effectiveness of cheap and on the nose pop culture references are completely relative to that of an audience – of whom are completely game and invested for a fun, entertaining ride (no matter what the actual context of the story entails) even before the picture ever begins. Coroners of comic failure will find much to uncover in the corpse of “Holmes & Watson,” a thoroughly tedious and never-amusing spoof of Arthur Conan Doyle’s legendary detective.
Does the fault lie in the fact that current iterations of Holmes — the Benedict Cumberbatch BBC series, the Guy Ritchie movies, even CBS’ “Elementary” — aren’t all that faithful to the material, so satirizing it seems irrelevant? Could it be that the script by director Etan Cohen (“Get Hard”) never had a second draft? Or did Cohen not worry that everything on the page was not particularly funny because stars Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly would somehow will this painful material into amusement merely by showing up on set?
The results are singularly awful, but there are three people who can emerge unscathed from this fiasco: Rebecca Hall, who elicits mild chuckles (the closest this film gets to laughter) as...

Judging by the conspicuous lack of fanfare awaiting “Step Brothers” co-stars Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly’s third feature pairing, the fact that critics weren’t invited, and the faint odor of horse manure emanating from the theater on Christmas morning, one doesn’t need to be a master detective to deduce that “Holmes & Watson” is a dud — not that the packed house for a 9 a.m. opening-day show seemed to mind.
As far as Ferrell and Reilly are concerned, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s unstumpable sleuth and the thankless sidekick who recorded his every exploit are not just a great crime-solving duo but one of the great bromances of English literature — and therefore a natural target for the two actors’ ongoing exploration of dysfunctional friendships. The trouble is, Sherlock Holmes exists so large in audiences’ minds already that the pair’s uninspired take feels neither definitive nor especially fresh — just an off-brand,...

"His methods are ingenious. He's a master of disguise. And his mind is brilliant." The full cast includes Kelly Macdonald, Rebecca Hall, Lauren Lapkus, Noah Jupe, Hugh Laurie as Mycroft, Pam Ferris, Bella Ramsey, Rob Brydon, Kieran O'Brien, Bronson Webb, and Jordan Long; with Ralph Fiennes as Moriarty. This looks totally kooky and absurd, and a bit too dumb for my tastes. Enjoy. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Etan Cohen's Holmes and Watson,...
