Considered by many to be the magnum opus of author Cormac McCarthy – whose works include No Country for Old Men, The Road, All the Pretty Horses, and Child of God, among others – the violent Western Blood Meridian (you can pick up a copy Here) was published in 1985… and in the years since, several filmmakers have made unsuccessful attempts to bring the story to the screen. Adaptations have passed through the hands of Tommy Lee Jones, Ridley Scott, and James Franco, with Franco getting the furthest with it, shooting 25 minutes of test footage before the producer shut down the project. With unrelenting violence and a dark tone, Blood Meridian has been said to be unfilmable. But director John Hillcoat, who previously helmed the feature based on The Road (pictured below), is pushing an adaptation forward at New Regency, and Deadline reports that John Logan, who received Oscar nominations for his work on the scripts for Hugo,...

Acclaimed writer John Logan will adapt Pulitzer Prize-winning author Cormac McCarthy’s “Blood Meridian” novel into a feature film for director John Hillcoat.
Hillcoat is also producing along with Keith Redmon for New Regency. Cormac McCarthy’s son, John Francis McCarthy, will serve as executive producer, while Cormac, who died in June 2023, will receive a posthumous executive producer credit.
“It’s incredibly exciting to have John Logan on board,” John Francis said. “Very reassuring in the seemingly long list of good news concerning what was originally such an intimidating undertaking.”
The project was originally set up with director James Franco and star Russell Crowe in 2016, but fell apart over rights to the book.
Based on historical conflicts along the Texas-Mexico border in the 1850s, “Blood Meridian” follows the journey of the Kid, a fourteen-year-old from Tennessee, as he navigates the brutal and harrowing landscape of this new era.

Cormac McCarthy’s “Blood Meridian” has been one of the trickiest classic novels to adapt for the screen, but it now has a three-time Oscar nominee who may finally crack it.
John Logan, the writer of “Gladiator,” “The Aviator,” “Sweeney Todd,” “Skyfall,” and the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic “Michael,” has been tapped to adapt “Blood Meridian” into a feature film.
Last year, New Regency announced it was developing a feature film based on the 1985 Western novel, and the studio attached John Hillcoat — who previously directed McCarthy’s “The Road” — to direct the film. Hillcoat is also directing and producing “Blood Meridian” alongside Keith Redmon for New Regency.
Cormac McCarthy is getting a posthumous executive producer credit on the film, and his son John Francis McCarthy is also serving as an EP.

You just can't keep those damn dirty apes down. 10 years after Tim Burton's 2001 "Planet of the Apes" re-imagining failed to reignite audiences' passion for stories about intellectually-enhanced simians, the long-running sci-fi franchise made an unexpectedly strong comeback with "Rise of the Planet of the Apes." Director Rupert Wyatt's entry in the series is now generally considered the weakest of the modern "Apes" trilogy, which is more of a testament to what Matt Reeves was able to accomplish with his subsequent sequels than necessarily a knock against Wyatt's film. "Rise" itself makes for an effective cautionary tale about humanity's hubris, our lack of compassion toward other living beings, and our habit of being our own worst enemy, as seen through the eyes of its co-protagonist, Caesar (Andy Serkis in his touchstone motion-capture role).
Yes, it's easy to forget that Caesar wasn't originally the singular lead of his own story.

Updated, 10:27 Am: 20th Century Studios’ Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes landed on Nrg’s three-week tracking Thursday with a $54 million domestic opening outlook, which jibes with what Quorum’s six-week projection was a few weeks ago.
Unaided awareness, which indicates that those being polled about the May 10-debuting movie already are aware it’s coming out, is strong with men over/under 25. However, first choice is a tad stronger among guys under 25.
As we told, you a start at this level for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes would be on par with the 2011 Andy Serkis-James Franco movie Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which debuted to $54.8M. Right now, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is expected to be the biggest opening of May. In the same breath, Warner Bros/Village Roadshow’s Furiosa is going to blare its loudspeaker once...

There is a lot that can be and has been said about the dance scenes in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3. Little of it has been positive in the 17(!) years since the movie’s release. Undeniably leaning into the director’s goofier comic sensibility, the film twice detours from its dour tone—which begins when Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) dons the bad juju vibes of an alien symbiote—in order to have a laugh-out-loud dance break. In one sequence near the end of the second act, and after Peter has permanently scarred and attempted to kill his Bff (James Franco), Maguire’s protagonist struts down the streets of New York City to James Brown. The strut then becomes a full on disco-like routine after he upgrades to an all-black suit.
Several minutes later, Spider-Man 3 further ups the camp factor by seeing symbiote-influenced Peter attempt to make Mary Jane (Kirsten Dunst...

James Franco is an Oscar-nominated actor-director who has had his share of up-and-downs, controversies and good graces, but through it all has always remained an interesting presence in front of and behind the camera. Take a look back at 16 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born on April 19, 1978, Franco has developed a pretty notable resume since he first came to audience’s attention on the low rated but highly acclaimed TV series “Freaks and Geeks.” A year after that NBC show ended, Franco found fame in a highly praised TV biography of James Dean for which he won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Emmy award. That success led him to a film career which has run the gamut from superhero blockbusters to Oscar nominated prestige films.

For most performers, building up a resume of over 150 projects is something that takes an entire lifetime to achieve, but for James Franco that is a feat he has accomplished at just 45 years old. This Freaky Geek was catapulted to fame in one of biggest comic book franchises of all time before settling in to his role as a performer who can take on any genre and any film no matter how big or small. But with a tremendous rise at such a young age, sometimes you don’t make the best decisions. For Franco, those bad decisions would come to light on the very night of his greatest professional achievement and begin a downfall that is sadly all too common in today’s world. At one point putting out up to 12 projects a year, Franco has taken a backseat as allegations against him began to pile up. It is...

The stoner action-comedy film “Pineapple Express” set needed more aspirin on its set than weed.
Each of the principal actors got seriously hurt on the shoot, Danny McBride says — otherwise, it was a total “blast.” In a recent interview with GQ (video below), the “Foot Fist Way” alum rattled off his injuries from the shoot — as well as the ones suffered by leads Seth Rogen and James Franco.
A central fight scene between the trio of actors in the 2008 film led to broken bones, at least one concussion, and two split skulls.
“That fight scene was crazy. We were going for it, so everybody got injured,” McBride said. “I think Seth broke his hand or his finger or something and Franco had split his forehead open. Like that’s why he has a bandana for most of the movie with sweatbands because he had actually split his forehead open. He had a big scar there,...

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is just over a month away, and it looks like Wes Ball’s addition to the franchise is stacking up to be a significant hit. The last three Planet of the Apes movies did a good job reinventing the franchise for the 21st century, with the last two instalments, directed by Matt Reeves, especially acclaimed. While the Caesar trilogy has come to an end, the new film is set to follow the same continuity, only taking place generations later. In many ways, Kingdom seems more in line with the original series, with talking apes, led by Owen Teague’s Noa, at war with a primitive human society.
According to Deadline, the film is tracking for a $54-61 million dollar opening, which would put it on track with the last film, War for the Planet of the Apes, which opened with $56 million. It’ll...

Technically speaking, the Year of the Monkey is still four years away, but 2024 apparently failed to get the memo. "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" got the party started by beating all early estimates and overperforming at the box office. Meanwhile, actor/director Dev Patel is doing everything in his power to turn himself into our next action star with the upcoming "Monkey Man," which is similarly poised to provide a much-needed boost among moviegoers for original movies. But as exciting as these offerings are, both of them might as well be the hors d'oeuvres and appetizers preceding the main course: "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes."

There was a time where hate for Anne Hathaway was confoundingly strong. But what had she really done to deserve all of the backlash? It’s not like she was a one-note star – she balanced crappy rom-comcs with terrific performances in movies like Brokeback Mountain and Rachel Getting Married – or was a problem on the set. And yet people had seemingly decided to turn on her sometime in the early 2010s, with a new term, “Hathahate”, being coined. But one who remained faithful in her as an actress and a professional was Christopher Nolan, who cast her as Selina Kyle aka Catwoman in 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises and again in 2014’s Interstellar. And for that, Anne Hathaway is forever grateful.

While it’s hard to pinpoint an origin story for the backlash, it’s no secret that it became popular to hate on actress Anne Hathaway circa 2011 and 2012, the former being the year she hosted the Oscars with James Franco and the latter the year she won her first Oscar for “Les Misérables.” Perhaps it was the earnestness, possibly what was seen as an eager-to-please attitude. Still, the actress definitely took a perception hit in those ensuing years, seemingly adopted by the press as well.

Anne Hathaway won an Oscar. Then her career took a turn for the worse.
The actress says in a new profile that co-hosting the 2013 Oscars and taking home the honor for best supporting actress for Les Misérables marked a tipping point where her online and media reputation turned “toxic” — to the point where she says it cost her movie roles.
The viral phenomenon dubbed “Hathahate” had no actual cause, other than the actress enjoying a surge in exposure and popularity that got her dubbed “annoying” by some, taking her from It Girl to Not-It Girl thanks to some online backlash.
After winning the Oscar, Hathaway told Vanity Fair, “a lot of people wouldn’t give me roles, because they were so concerned about how toxic my identity had become online.”

Some of those included Channing Tatum’s “Gambit,” a James Franco-led “Multiple Man” project, a solo “X-23” pic from “Logan” director James Mangold, an R-rated “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.” written by “Game of Thrones” co-showrunner David Benioff, and even two different takes on “X-Force” from director Jeff Wadlow (“Kick-Ass 2”).

After the revelation of the ‘Master of Puppets’ in Helldivers 2, Game Master Joel has become quite a star on the internet. More like a meme-star. Arrowhead Game Studios CEO Johan Pilestedt revealed in an interview that there is actually a person sitting behind the scenes controlling the game’s narrative as players advance.
Before the Game Master came into the light, players were already taken aback as their beloved planet Malevelon Creek whom they were calling “space Vietnam” was conquered by Automatons. However, it was no coincidence as it too was a ‘part of the great plan’. To this, players have taken to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) sharing memes, and expressing emotions following the event.

When considering the greatest innovations in visual effects on film, there are few franchises that have done more for the medium than the rebooted "Planet of the Apes" trilogy (soon to be quadrilogy with "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes"). While plenty of modern blockbusters use visual effects to create expansive worlds and larger-than-life creatures, "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" was the first to ground them in a human-animal hybrid protagonist and their emotional journey. There is simply no greater digitally-realized character than Caesar, (Andy Serkis) cinema's first-ever photorealistic leading ape and one of modern filmmaking's most complex and challenging characters.
Caesar's rise from the son of a science experiment to an exalted leader is as heartfelt as it is harrowing, a story of balanced leadership and immense sacrifice amidst turmoil and violence. The fact that all of this is built using digital, humanoid apes -- not...

The latest trailer for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes confirmed a major tie to James Franco's Will Rodman, a character who appeared in the 2011 movie.
In Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Rodman is the scientist whose attempt at curing Alzheimer's disease leads to the fall of the human race, making room for evolved apes. Franco's character is also the one who raised Caesar himself, showing him the positive side of humanity—something not many apes have witnessed.
After Rise, Rodman was not seen again in any other installment in the franchise.

Early on in Harmony Korine’s new experimental action film Aggro Dr1ft, hitman protagonist Bo (Jordi Mollà) strangles a guy to death in his pool. Or maybe that happens toward the end. And, come to think of it, that might have been a hot tub. You’ll have to forgive my confusion, because the movie is defiantly nonlinear, shot entirely in the garish neons of infrared vision, and not anchored in any baseline reality: the moment he snuffs out this man, Bo unleashes a gigantic Balrog-like kaiju that appears to...

Four years ago, actor Dave Franco made his feature directorial debut with the horror film The Rental, which happened to star his wife Alison Brie. Now Deadline reports that Franco and Brie are set to share the screen in the upcoming horror film Together, which they will also be producing, with first-time feature filmmaker Michael Shanks writing and directing.
Tango, Picturestart, and 30West are providing the financing, while Picturestart, Tango, 1.21, and Princess Pictures produce alongside Franco and Brie.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but Deadline was able to learn that Together is about “the horror of co-dependency, told in a unique way.” Of course, they’re not ready to tell us just how the film will be approaching this subject matter in a unique way.

John Cena is the best friend whom Zac Efron never had in the first trailer for Prime Video’s comedy Ricky Stanicky.
Peter Farrelly directed the Amazon MGM Studios feature that begins streaming March 7. The movie follows Dean (Efron) and two lifelong friends who invent an imaginary pal named Ricky Stanicky as someone to blame for a childhood prank gone wrong. The three buddies continue to attribute their mishaps over the years to the nonexistent friend until finally deciding to hire a struggling actor known as “Rock Hard” Rod (Cena) to portray Ricky when their partners want to meet him.
“Ricky Stanicky isn’t real,” Efron tells Cena, who appears to be taking the gig too far. This leads Cena to explain why he wants to continue playing the part: “My job sucked, I had no friends. But now I have all those things.”

Rapper Travis Scott stars in the first trailer for his and director Harmony Korine’s indie film “Aggro Dr1ft,” which was shot entirely in infrared.
The short trailer is bathed in the starkly contrasted colors of the infrared lens, and it follows an assassin on his journey. “Breaking away from the traditional parameters of cinema, ‘Aggro Dr1ft’ explores the onslaught of digital ephemera and interrogates modern life through the vernacular of video games. Shot entirely through an infrared lens, the film follows a Miami Beach hitman as he embarks on the relentless pursuit of his next target,” reads the logline.
“As it is, ‘Aggro Dr1ft’ is visually thrilling but somewhat tedious to sit through — better as wallpaper than the main attraction,” wrote Variety chief film critic Peter Debruge in his review. “Still, as with James Cameron’s ‘Avatar,’ there’s wisdom in the generic quality of his script. In all of Stephen King’s massive catalog, few works are as bleak as his 2010 novella collection Full Dark, No Stars. Rather than supernatural entities, these four dark tales feature human monsters and deal with the horrors that live inside the human heart. Two novellas serve as mirror images of each other, exploring the female response to predatory men. “Big Driver” follows cozy mystery writer Tess Thorne on a mission of revenge against the stranger who raped her and left her for dead. “A Good Marriage” centers Darcy Anderson, a happily married woman faced with a horrifying choice when she discovers her husband’s secret life.
Both novellas were faithfully adapted into feature films in the year 2014 – for better or worse. Premiering on Lifetime, Big Driver tackles King’s rape-revenge story with Maria Bello staring as the vigilante writer and Olympia Dukakis as her literary detective. Ann Dowd and Joan Jett...

After Jo Koy’s disastrous hosting gig at this Sunday’s Golden Globes – which seemingly left the majority of viewers and attendees stone-faced – it might be as good of a time as any to ask, What exactly do we want in a host? Sure, he had less than three weeks to get ready for the night, but Koy was not the answer.
