NATPE, under new management after encountering turbulence during the pandemic, has appointed a new advisory board and is firming up plans for the return of its signature U.S. conference next January in Miami.
The conference organizer was rescued out of bankruptcy at the start of 2023 by Brunico, the Canadian company behind events like the Realscreen Summit and Banff World Media Festival. The flagship NATPE conference, rooted in Miami over the past decade-plus, had managed to weather massive industry disruptions over nearly six decades but couldn’t survive Covid. The 11th-hour decision to cancel the 2022 edition due to the Omicron wave left NATPE on the hook for hefty fees to hotel operators and vendors, prompting management to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last October.
The retooled January conference, now called NATPE Global, is returning to Miami but not to the event’s longtime South Beach base at the Fontainebleau. Instead,...

Back in the mid-1980’s, Oliver Stone met with famed financier Carl Icahn about a movie he was writing called “Wall Street.” The meeting provided the director with much of the inspiration for the film’s villain Gordon Gekko. Stone speaks about the meeting in HBO’s documentary “Icahn: The Restless Billionaire,” debuting on Feb. 15. Along with Stone, the 100-minute docu features interviews with Icahn, his wife Gail and children Brett and Michelle.
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, and business journalists including Andrew Ross Sorkin (New York Times), Cara Lombardo (The Wall Street Journal) and Rana Foroohar (Financial Times) also help director Bruce David Klein unpack many of the octogenarian billionaire’s legendary business dealings. Corporate deals that include Icahn’s takeover of Twa in the 1980s, his 2013 high-profile investment in Apple, which provoked a stock rise of $17 billion dollars, his public battle with Bill Ackman over Herbalife that same year,...

Reality TV execs and producers are keeping an eye on HQ Trivia, and starting to ask if — or how — the popular app might be adapted for television.
HQ Trivia doesn’t yet have an agent, and isn’t actively shopping for a deal. But that’s not stopping reality players to kick the tires and set up meetings with the company. According to insiders, HQ Trivia’s creators have also sat down with a handful of agents and former agents in Hollywood as they look for advice.
“We’re inspired by TV and see some ways we can integrate, but nothing to share yet,” HQ Trivia co-founder Rus Yusupov said in an emailed statement.
Almost everyone agrees that time is of the essence for HQ Trivia if it were to break into TV. If it doesn’t capitalize on the current success of the app, the company risks being upstaged by an imitator,...

This week, our cup runneth over with a "Karate Kid" knockoff, a shot-for-shot remake and more documentaries than Michael Moore can shake an overpriced hot dog at.
"Blind Mountain"
The recipient of plenty of acclaim at last year's Cannes Film Festival, director Li Yang has a casual yet immediate style that's been touted as something of a Chinese answer to Ken Loach. "Blind Mountain" offers an uncomfortable but powerful indictment of China's one child policy and the sex trade that has flourished under it. The film follows the desperate struggle of a young woman who accepts a job in a remote mountain village, only to discover that she has unwittingly been sold into marriage as a slave.
Opens in New York.
"Doomsday"
