It may all be ridiculous if you think about it too much, but this action-comedy franchise still has gas in the tank 30 years after the fortuitous teaming of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence first hit the beat as notorious Miami cops aka the “Bad Boys.”
Perhaps the most action-packed edition yet, Bad Boys: Ride or Die turns the tables on the two title stars as Mike Lawrey (Smith) and partner Marcus Burnett (Lawrence) find themselves on the run and on the other side of the law. Their beloved late Captain Howard (Joe Pantoliano), who died at the hands of vicious cartel member Armando Aretas (Jacob Scipio) in the previous film, 2020’s Bad Boys for Life, is accused posthumously of being on the take from the cartels. The evidence seems undeniable and is upheld by Captain Rita (Paola Núñez), the new chief of the Advanced Miami Metro Operations, a former girlfriend...

Breathing life into the beloved board game Dungeons & Dragons was no easy feat, as it took the roleplaying tabletop game’s long-gestating feature film adaptation four years to reach the silver screen on the opening night of this year’s SXSW. But patience, passion, and perseverance prevailed — and, incidentally, those aren’t just traits necessary for making any film, they’re also the exact mix one needs to succeed in the playing of the beloved RPG itself.
Drawing inspiration from the game’s unique improvisation and communal creativity, directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein successfully construct with “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.”
The story follows the heartbroken and comically calculated Edgin (played by the charming Chris Pine), an ex-Harper who has turned to petty thievery. He escapes prison with his barbarian best friend Holga (Michelle Rodriguez), who has spent years helping him raise his daughter Kira...

For the first time in more than 20 years, the Mortal Kombat franchise is coming to the big screen with a new film adaptation of the video game series that kicked off in 1992. Produced by James Wan and directed by Simon McQuoid, the official trailer for the new Mortal Kombat has been unleashed ahead of its April 16th release in theaters and on HBO Max via Warner Bros. And evidenced by the trailer, viewers have a lot of creative fight sequences to look forward to, including Subzero freezing Scorpion's blood and using it as a dagger.

The special publication serves as a culmination of this year's edition of the Polish event, which included presentations from experts such as Dan Lebental. Prepared by the organisers of the Post Production Forum, the Post in Poland - Guide to the Polish Post-production catalogue is now available online for free, Cineuropa has learned. Containing detailed descriptions of 21 Polish post-production companies, information on financial incentives as well as five interviews with representatives of the industry, its goal is to promote what, as argued by Dominika Kłoczewiak from the Viewer Foundation, the country already has to offer. “Polish post-production houses offer world-class services, but knowledge on this subject is scattered and hence our idea to publish a catalog that would summarise it,” she said. “We did not manage to present all post-production companies right away, but we hope to be able to continue this project and update it with more representatives...

A typically frothy, buddy-cop drama, "Bad Boys For Life" is the third edition of the franchise, which started way back in 1995.
This film picks up in real-time, 17 years after the events of the previous film with nearly the entire cast, which is wonderful. It also introduces a new team, which adds dimensions to the protagonists' character with the family-and-friend track. These new aspects in turn add an emotional weightage to the viewing experience.
In this edition, Miami detectives Mike Lowrey (Will Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) are both in their fifties racing against time, at this juncture, not to arrest any criminal but to meet Marcus' just-born grandson.
Realising how fast time is moving, Marcus plans to retire from the fast-moving life of a cop but Mike, who still has the stamina in him, refuses to hang his boots.
And while they are debating on the issue of retirement,...

Peter Parker faces life after “Avengers: Endgame” in “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” and so does the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general, but by the end of this latest saga, both seem ready to face any future challenges.
In a year that’s only half-done, audience members would be forgiven for having superhero fatigue after “Captain Marvel,” “Shazam!” and “Avengers: Endgame.” (It’s almost welcome news that we aren’t getting the next McU movie until 2020.) But with a focus on character-based comedy, coming-of-age anxieties, and super-battles that exist in very specific geographical locations, returning writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers and director Jon Watts have carved out a space for Spider-Man that feels uniquely breezy and charming while still fitting the larger structure of the Marvel movies.
The film opens with a hilariously earnest piece of exposition — a high-school TV station’s “in memoriam” montage for Tony Stark and others...

I love what Marvel Studios has done with Spider-Man since he was first introduced to the McU in Captain America: Civil War. He's had an interesting story arc and the first solo film under Marvel's direction was so freakin' good! That's going to be a hard movie to top, but director Jon Watts is obviously up for the task.
While talking to THR, Ant-Man and the Wasp editor Dan Lebental was asked about Spider-Man: Far From Home because that's his next film project. He didn't say much in regards to the story, but he did say:
"I can’t say much about the new Spider-Man but I will offer up that it will be both grander in scale and even funnier than the last one. The rest of the story will have to wait."

Though the Webhead is easily one of the most popular and enduring superheroes the world over, he’s had somewhat of a bizarre cinematic history over the past two decades. Don’t get me wrong, the wall-crawler has raked in a lot of dough, but let’s not forget that he’s been rebooted twice already – and in such a short timespan.
On the plus side, 2017’s Homecoming served as a highly satisfying introduction for Peter Parker into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In fact, I’d say it was my favorite film featuring the character to date. That said, I’m right there with you if you’re someone who’s looking forward to seeing Spider-Man: Far From Home.
Of course, details concerning any flick produced by Marvel Studios set to follow Avengers 4 are going to be scarce for some time, so we’ll take whatever we can get in the interim.

Marvel seems to have another solid hit in the making with Ant-Man, coming off a generally successful premiere night. With this improbable movie project finally checked off Marvel.s backlog, early reception indicates that film.s showcased tonal chemistry found balance between action and humor that wider weekend audiences should find agreeable. However, it seems that one particular sequence cut from the film took said humor a bit too far. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Dan Lebental, a veteran film editor whose cutting room extractions were made on a number of previous Marvel movies, discusses one particular scene in Ant-Man that looked to take the size-shaping technology utilized by Paul Rudd.s Scott Lang and turn it into an allegedly juvenile montage of mischief. As Lebental explains: There had been a sequence in the movie that was shot and removed, a kind of wish-fulfillment sequence. At one point,...

It took some skilled editors to put Ant-Man, the mighty but micro hero on the big screen. For Disney and Marvel’s Ant-Man, which debuts this weekend, the studio brought in veteran Dan Lebental, who edited the studio's Iron Man, Iron Man 2 and Thor: The Dark World. And this time around, he co-edited the film with Colby Parker, Jr., a frequent collaborator with Peter Berg whose credits include Lone Survivor and Hancock. “Scott, I’ve been watching you for a while now. You’re different. Now, don’t let anyone tell you that you have nothing to offer.” Ant-Man may feature a superhero who can shrink to microscopic sizes, but that unique ability could expand Marvel’s cinematic universe in a big way. Marvel has released the first trailer for Ant-Man, featuring a lot of screen time for Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas, while also teasing an impressive supporting cast.
Press Release – “Set for release in the United States on July 17, 2015, the film is directed by Peyton Reed (“Bring it On,” “The Break-Up”) and stars Paul Rudd (“I Love You Man,” “Role Models”) as Scott Lang aka Ant-Man, and Michael Douglas (“Behind The Candelabra,” “Wall Street”) as his mentor Dr. Hank Pym and Evangeline Lilly (“The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,” “Lost”) as Hope Van Dyne, daughter of Hank Pym.

Batman has The Joker. Thor has Loki. Superman has Lex Luthor. Every hero needs a villain, and in Marvel’s upcoming film, Ant-Man, the opposition to the titular microscopic protagonist played by Paul Rudd is fittingly coined Yellowjacket. With fans waiting for the film’s first trailer to debut in the near future, new banner artwork has been unveiled to hold us over, offering the first look at the main antagonist.
As Marvel announced during their Hall H Comic-Con panel, Yellowjacket, aka Darren Cross, will be played by Corey Stoll (The Strain, This Is Where I Leave You, Midnight in Paris). Cross is a a former protégé of Hank Pym (the original Ant-Man, played by Michael Douglas), who takes a dark path after getting his hands on Pym’s shrinking suit technology. You can see Yellowjacket in the banner below, and in case you missed it, we also have the...

Yesterday marked the first day of principal photography for Ant-Man. If I’m to be honest, I’m still a bit bummed that Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish have left the project. I think their take on the Marvel Universe could have been one akin to James Gunn’s approach to Guardians of the Galaxy. Alas, we are still getting an Ant-Man film and the casting is pretty great. We also have a look at Paul Rudd as Scott Lang Aka Ant-Man.

Fresh out of college, my first real job was at a postproduction house in New York City. There I was fortunate enough to brush elbows with editors who'd been in the business for decades. One of the things you need to last in the ever-changing world of postproduction is the ability to evolve with the development of the technology that surrounds you. As you might imagine, a recurring topic at my old office was nostalgia over the old way of cutting film, when you handed reels of film that you had to physically cut. I'd done this exactly once, in college for a class assignment. Still, I was enchanted by these storied editors waxing romantic about the bygone editing era, as they zinged masterfully through revisions on an all-digital editing program. Well, it was exactly this kind of nostalgia that editor Dan Lebental tapped into when he invented TouchEdit, an...

For $50, you can own the editing program that Jon Favreau and Dan Lebental will use to edit their next film. Lebental (who edited Iron Man and Zathura among others) has designed a new iPad app called TouchEdit that will grant access to pros and enthusiasts to 90% of the tools that Lebental would use to edit a studio-funded feature film (and he’s promised to use it on his next project with Favreau). It’s available on iTunes, but if it’s the future, it’s been inspired by the past. “It was such a badge of honor to touch film,” Lebental told The Hollywood Reporter. “I realized that is one of the things we lost. I miss interacting directly with the media.” Now, the touch screen facilitates that for him. The app even includes a tool called a Grease Pencil that allows editors to “physically” mark in and out points directly on the digital frames. Isn...

Editor Dan Lebental -- whose credits with director Jon Favreau include Iron Man and Iron Man 2 -- has developed an editing app for the iPad that is now available on iTunes for $50. Lebental describes TouchEdit, a frame-based editing app, as a “21st century version of the Moviola” that brings back the simplicity of film editing (including a retro design) while incorporating the latest advances in mobile technology and cloud-based services. It’s aimed at both professionals and video enthusiasts and designed as a tool that Lebental himself would use for a movie or TV project, either as a standalone editor or

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences brings you the Oscars (yep, that's why they're called Academy Awards), and on Friday, the organization announced that it was prepared to invite 176 new folks to its fold.
In a list posted on its website, the Academy deemed Matthew McConaughey, Jean Dujardin, Terrence Malick, Jonah Hill, Berenice Bejo, Jessica Chastain, Octavia Spencer and a host of other film luminaries worthy of inclusion in its nearly 6,000-member army.
The Academy has drawn the ire of critics who bemoan its overwhelmingly male, white population. A Los Angeles Times investigation found that of all Academy members, 94 percent are Caucasian and 77 percent are male. A mere 2 percent are black, with Latinos constituting an even smaller portion. Only 14 percent of members are under the age of 50.
Full members of the Academy select and vote on Oscars nominees. The organization was started in 1927 and is now governed by a 43-person board.

I don't know about the rest of you, but one of the movies I'm really excited about seeing this year is Jon Favreau's Cowboys & Aliens. I've noticed that when the trailer for this plays in a movie theater the audience laughs and makes dumbass comments about how stupid it looks. This movie obviously isn't going to be for everyone, but I don't understand how they can't see the awesome fun in this story! It's cowboys and indians fighting aliens for cryin' out loud! Not only that, but the movie looks really freakin' good. I love that it has the gritty feel of a old school western.

There are two kinds of movie fans: people who embrace spoilers and people who avoid them like the plague. This post is for the former. IGN just put up a detailed description [1] of the first act of Cowboys & Aliens, having visited director Jon Favreau and editor Dan Lebental in the editing room last November. Scheduled for release on July 29, Cowboys & Aliens stars Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford and Olivia Wilde in a sci-fi spin on the Western genre that follows a mysterious stranger who realizes he's the only person who can save a town from attacking aliens. Favreau has become one of the most fan-friendly directors out there, always willing to show fans [2] just enough to whet our appetites [3] for his films and Cowboys & Aliens is no exception. If you don't mind spoilers, hit the jump to read what happens in the first 40 minutes of the movie. A big thanks to...

Rick Baker was honored by the International Press Academy this past weekend in Los Angeles.
Director John Landis presented Baker the Tesla Award for recognition of Visionary Achievement in Filmmaking Technology. It was the young director who first hired Baker in 1971 for Schlock. They have worked together ever since including An American Werewolf in London which earned Baker the first of six Academy Awards.
He later told Sci Fi Wire that his work on next year’s The Wolfman pays homage to the Universal original, not his own werewolf efforts. "I had a lot of trouble with that, because Benicio already looks like a werewolf, especially when he grows his facial hair out," Baker said. "I kept telling them that he wouldn't look too much different.

You gotta love a middle-aged wreck as a superhero. Iron Man may not make the A-list of Marvel Comics' stable -- home to Spider-Man, X-Men and the Hulk -- but he may be the cinema superhero for the rest of us. No spider bite or genetic mutation produces him. Rather he springs from good old American ingenuity, the brainchild of his creator and impersonator, Tony Stark, a character modeled in part on genius-playboy Howard Hughes. Tony wears his character flaws like badges of honor yet Iron Man represents a midlife correction.
Iron Man, the first self-financed production from Marvel Studios, should catch boxoffice lightning in a bottle, thanks to hiring longtime Marvel Comics reader Jon Favreau as director and the supersmart casting of Robert Downey Jr. as the conflicted protagonist. The betting line about opening weekend grosses really pales in significance to the real question: Will the film imitate its hero's ability to blast into the stratosphere for many weeks? The guess here is a big yes.
The entire film, written by Mark Fergus & Hawk Ostby and Art Marcum & Matt Holloway, is devoted to how Tony Stark, the top U.S. weapons manufacturer and all-around playboy, becomes Iron Man. A kidnapping by insurgents in Afghanistan forces Tony To invent a crude prototype to escape captivity. (His captors are a little too dumb for belief to think he is actually assembling a weapon for them.)
Back in his Malibu home, having witnessed U.S. soldiers slaughtered with his weaponry, he declares himself out of that business for good. While his partner Obadiah Stane (a marvelously malevolent Jeff Bridges) seizes control of the company, Tony perfects his red-and-gold weapons suit with a somewhat ill-defined plan to use it for good.
The film neatly borrows from a raft of both real and science-fiction technologies as well as previous sci-fi movies to propel the fast-paced two-hour film. In his home basement (think Bat Cave), Tony can talk to his computers and robotics (think R2-D2) while his suit starts to resemble RoboCop on human growth hormones. The space flights and acrobatics over Los Angeles evoke Spider-Man. Yet the whole package is distinctly its own, a tale originated in the '60s cleverly and logically transposed into today's world.
Downey plays off his own bad-boy image wonderfully. The writers give him great lines to work with and ditto that for his Girl Friday, Gwyneth Paltrow's Pepper Potts, whose own svelte lines cannot be improved on.
Key disappointment is a climatic battle between different Iron Man prototypes, which is both illogical -- how did Tony's nemesis learn how to use the suit? -- and derivative of many other superhero climaxes. Never mind. Marvel has several more sequels to upgrade Iron Man.
