Ten years ago, anticipation was astronomically high for Christopher Nolan’s sequel to Batman Begins,The Dark Knight. It wasn’t just another comic book spectacle — it was the first movie to star Heath Ledger since the actor’s shocking death at 28.
In early 2008, months before The Dark Knight opened on July 18, an exhausted Ledger retreated to his New York City apartment to try and get some rest and recuperate from an illness he couldn’t shake.
Despite warnings from friends and family about mixing sleeping pills with prescription medications, the Brokeback Mountain star was found dead on January 22, 2008 in his apartment.

Heath Ledger's Joker will go down as one of the most iconic versions of the character ever. He was just so freakin' great in the role! He brought that character to life in the most terrifying way imaginable and it's hard to think that anyone will be able to top what he did.
It's been ten years since Heath Ledger tragically passed away. He was only 28-years-old and he had such an amazing career ahead of him. Every time I watch a movie with him in it, it still kinda stings that he's gone.
Lots of fans have wondered if Ledger would have reprised his role of The Joker in the third Batman film had he not passed away. Well, after all these years Ledger's sister Kate has revealed that he did plan on playing The Joker again.
During an interview last year with the Australian news outlet news.

It’s been 10 whole years since the tragic, untimely death of Heath Ledger and still, his immense performance in The Dark Knight continues to be a source of inspiration and awe.
On January 22nd, 2008, Ledger died due to a cardiac arrest brought on by a drug overdose. He was only 28 years old at the time of the incident, which left the entire entertainment industry in mourning at the loss of such a great, raw talent. If there’s one small solace to take away from Heath Ledger’s all-too-brief time on this Earth, though, it’s that he saved his best performance for last, and that’s something the Internet has honored on the 10th anniversary of his untimely death.
Here’s a small sample of the industry’s reactions, beginning with a piece from People that features an interview with his surviving sister, Kate Ledger:

Monday, January 22, marks the 10-year anniversary of Heath Ledger’s death. The 28-year-old actor’s bright, burgeoning career was cut short by an accidental prescription drug overdose, just six months before “The Dark Knight” hit theaters.
Ledger, of course, earned raves for his indelible turn as The Joker in the second film of Christopher Nolan‘s Batman trilogy and would dominate the Best Supporting Actor race the whole season, pulling off a clean sweep of the Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice, Screen Actors Guild, BAFTA and Oscar. Coincidentally, he received his Oscar nomination on the one-year anniversary of his death (he died on Oscar nomination day as well). When he won a month later, his parents, Kim Ledger and Sally Bell, and sister Kate Ledger accepted on his behalf before a tearful crowd, who gave a sustained standing ovation.

At the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of the documentary I Am Heath Ledger, Kate Ledger, the sister of the late actor, tried to dispel the long-whispered speculation that her brother’s death had something to do with his role in The Dark Knight. Before his death in 2008, Ledger himself described suffering from insomnia and trying to treat it with prescription drugs during his legendary turn as the mass-murdering, psychopathic Batman villain The Joker, for which he won a posthumous Academy Award. But according to his sister, as reported by The Telegraph, all the depression and turmoil Heath was rumored to have been going during the film’s production, as well as the creepy Joker journal he’d constructed, was normal for the famously dedicated actor.
“I was really shocked, because that was him having fun,” The Telegraph reports her as saying. “Every report was coming out that he was ...

It has been two years since the tragic and untimely death of Australian born actor Heath Ledger. The beloved actor accidently overdosed on prescription medicine used to help him sleep on January 22, 2008. Shortly after his death, promotion for his new film The Dark Knight (2008) began, which became one of the highest grossing films of all-time, thanks to Ledger's role as the Joker. As production gears up for the third installment in the batman series, writer/director Christopher Nolan opens up about Ledger and his role as the Joker. While speaking with press, Nolan reveals that he has no intention of re-casting the Joker; instead he will do without him stating, "For me, Heath was the definitive Joker. It wouldn't feel appropriate to readdress that character." Ledger won an Academy Award for his roles as the Joker and his family was on hand to accept the award for their late son.

After the big show in the Kodak Theater, the first stop for many of the attendees was the Governors Ball. Along with attending this year's Oscars via the red carpet and the press room, we were fortunate enough to have a ticket to the fancy affair. While on the inside we watched the celebrities feast on their Wolfgang Puck meal set in the Asian-themed room decor. Celebs made their way through additional television press, which included a lot of singing from the youngest of the Slumdog cast, who were some of the last to arrive. Anne Hathaway continued to make it a family affair posing with her brother. She was being greeted nonstop and barely found any time to eat her meal, which included a three-tiered chocolate dessert with an Oscar on the top. Robert Pattinson and fellow teen heartthrob Zac Efron chatted and toasted with Vanessa Hudgens before heading over to the Vf afterparty.

And here comes the news that Heath's sister, Kate Ledger told reporters that her family is very much in the loop on his final movie. "We've seen a little bit of the footage," she said of Terry Gilliam's "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus," Heath Ledger's last film. "I think it's going to be amazing." Heath's posthumous Award was collected by his family. Parnassus deals with a story surrounding a traveling magician who gives customers more than they bargained for. The film is a joint ....

Backstage at the Oscars on Sunday night, Kate Ledger told reporters that her family is very much in the loop on her brother's final movie.
"We've seen a little bit of the footage," she said of Terry Gilliam's "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus," Ledger's last film. "I think it's going to be amazing."
But the comments only highlighted a larger question: When will U.S. audiences get to see it?
The head-trippy "Parnassus," about a traveling magician who gives customers more than they bargained for, is a joint production of financial entity Grosvenor Park and sales mogul Samuel Hadida of Davis Films. It was gliding along as just another independently financed production, and product of Gilliam's funhouse imagination, when Ledger died early last year in the middle of production.
The project's fate was thrown into question until Jude Law, Colin Farrell and Johnny Depp stepped in, with all three...

After taking the stage to accept their awards, the night's big winners - and some of the exciting presenters - walked backstage to pose for photos and talk to the press. Jennifer Aniston and Sarah Jessica Parker skipped the interview aspect of things instead posing pretty in front of the big gold men before running off to the after parties. The big award winners were still glowing from their wins when they stepped in front of the mics to talk about what brought them there. Penelope was first up and she was happy to answer questions in her native Spanish before gushing about Woody Allen. Heath's family did an incredible job honoring their son who took home the well deserved Best Supporting Actor award. Nothing was stopping Kate Winslet who joked about just how much better winning is than losing. Sean Penn made things a bit more serious talking about...

Being the favorite winner of this year's awards season, late Heath Ledger has collected the top prize for his lunatic performance as Joker in "The Dark Knight" as he is named Best Supporting Actor at the 81st Academy Awards. Accepting the award on his behalf were his father, Kim Ledger, his mother, Sally Bell, and his sister Kate Ledger.
Reading off the list of thank you in a calm voice for the acceptance speech, Kim said receiving the award is "ever-so-humbling". Adding to his speech, Sally who called his son an inspiration stated that the family chose to celebrate what Heath has achieved. Meanwhile, Kate confessed that she wishes her brother to accept the award himself, but added that they humbly accept on behalf of his daughter, Matilda.

Exactly one year after Heath Ledger died from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs, he received a posthumous Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of The Joker in "The Dark Knight." On the first anniversary of his death, the now two-time Oscar nominee's three sisters spoke out in their native Australia about their brother, his legacy and how deeply they still feel the loss.
