Firefighters responded to a call Thursday night at the Oregon hotel that was featured in director Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 horror classic, The Shining.
The film used aerial shots of the Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood in Oregon as part of its opening scene, and for exterior establishing shots.
The Oregonian reported a portion of the Lodge caught on fire at around 9:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Clackamas Fire Department shared that the fire was declared under control at about 11:12 Pm.
“The fire was kept to the roof & part of the attic, & didn’t spread any further. Crews are clearing the scene. The U.S. Forest Service will be conducting the investigation with the help of federal resources,” the firefighter account wrote, adding several photos of the scene.
No injuries were reported.

This post contains major spoilers for "True Detective: Night Country."
"True Detective: Night Country" isn't afraid to wear its influences on its sleeve. Episode 2 saw new showrunner Issa López borrow directly from David Fincher's "Seven," in which a presumed corpse suddenly wakes up with a jolt, making for the biggest jump scare in the director's 1995 crime thriller masterpiece. In "Night Country," this moment is echoed when the frozen body of a scientist awakens while still immersed in the ice, shocking police gathered around the horrific scene.
But Fincher isn't the only director López borrowed from to create "Night Country" and its eerie, haunting atmosphere. In fact, the fourth season of "True Detective" is notable for its wide array of inspirations, which span everything from John Carpenter's horror classic "The Thing" to the movie that established Jodie Foster herself as a true dramatic force, "The Silence of the Lambs.

I love Stanley Kubrick‘s classic Stephen King adaptation The Shining (watch it Here) and would probably have a blast watching the movie at the Timberline Lodge in Oregon – which is the place that stood in for the Overlook Hotel in the exterior shots of the location. (The interior scenes were filmed on sets in England.) Chances are, I’m not going to be able to do that any time soon, but some fans are going to have that opportunity later this year! On Set Cinema has announced that they will be showing The Shining at the Timberline Lodge on Sunday, October 6th! The event details can be found at This Link and tickets can be purchased Here.

Stanley Kubrick's 1980 horror film "The Shining," based on the popular book by Stephen King, saw struggling author Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) hired to be the caretaker of a remote, mountainside resort called the Overlook Hotel. During the winter months, snow prevents visitors from coming and going, and someone merely has to keep the furnaces burning. Jack is told that one of the hotel's previous caretakers, Mr. Grady, was infected by a severe case of cabin fever and slaughtered his family. Jack brushes off the violence as a mere horror story, and takes the job nonetheless.
While there, Jack and his family learn that the Overlook is deeply, deeply haunted. The hotel is almost a massive, unconscious mind, which manifests ghosts as a way to flex its memories. In one of the film's more terrifying scenes -- and it has many -- the young Danny (Danny Lloyd) is idly riding...

When it was announced in 1978 that legendary director Stanley Kubrick was adapting Stephen King’s third novel, The Shining, for the big screen, interest in the project immediately skyrocketed. The book, in which an alcoholic writer and his family (including his psychically gifted son), are tormented by supernatural forces in a snowbound hotel was considered a horror masterpiece almost as soon as it was published. King’s career was taking off like a rocket. The success of The Shining and his two previous novels, Carrie and ‘Salem’s Lot (as well as the hit movie version of Carrie), had crowned the young author the “king of horror.” To have Kubrick, one of the most renowned filmmakers in the world, tackle his latest book–and with Jack Nicholson, one of Hollywood’s most popular actors, set to star–was extraordinary.

Out of all the different types of films, the horror genre takes some of the biggest swings when it comes to endings. From bleak conclusions to those that tie everything up in a neat bow, horror movie endings have shocked, confused, and annoyed audiences over the years. One's opinion on horror's most (in)famous endings depends a lot on personal preference. Do you prefer an ending that offers hope or one that drives home a message of wretchedness? Are you a fan of the Shyamalan twist, or do you go for a more subtle approach?
A lot of thought goes into the ending of any film, and horror movies in particular. Sometimes, the director or writer's original vision isn't what ends up on screen. How test audiences react to a film can alter its ending considerably, and sometimes studios just can't get behind the film's creative vision. In other instances,...

It’s not even October, but Massachusetts is already being spoiled with horror events. A mere week after Silver Scream Con took place in Danvers, Terror Con slashed into the Royal Plaza Trade Center in Marlborough on September 15-17.

Ten years ago, The Criterion Collection dropped a dual-format edition of Charlie Chaplin’s City Lights. Included amongst its special features is behind-the-scenes footage of Chaplin forcing his co-star, Virginia Cherrill — a socialite the filmmaker spotted at a boxing match — to act out the scene of her blind flower girl handing his Tramp a rose 342 times. Chaplin’s relentless pursuit of perfection earned him the nickname “king of the re-take.” The crown was then passed to Stanley Kubrick who, if Guinness World Records is to be believed, required 148 takes of...

I don't remember what the first R-rated film I ever saw was. I know it was fairly early on, probably around age eight or nine, and it was not some plan I'd concocted to see one or anything like that. Sometimes you just happen upon an R-rated film as a kid, and even though I had parents who were fairly protective about what I watched growing up, that kind of thing just happens. I do vividly remember the first R-rated film I saw in a theater was: "V for Vendetta." I was 12 years old, and I can still picture the bargaining conversation between my dad, my uncle, my two years older cousin, and I about seeing it opening weekend in March 2006. I got to go, and one week later, we had the same conversation about Spike Lee's "Inside Man," which I also successfully went to. After that, the guardrails were off.

Heeeeere’s Monterey Jack! Shelley Duvall isn’t the only one who faced the brunt of Stanley Kubrick’s torture during the making of The Shining, as it has come out that the director used dairy products to make Jack Nicholson miserable.
Lee Unkrich, who edited Taschen’s upcoming book, “Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining”, put a lot of work into combing through the fact and fiction surrounding the movie’s production. And one of the most peculiar stories he confirmed was Kubrick’s use of cheese to torment Nicholson while making The Shining. “I’ve been researching this movie so long that I’ve seen these incorrect or exaggerated stories appear, and then I’ve watched them become more and more exaggerated over the years. And a lot of times it’s harmless. Like Stanley Kubrick found out that Jack Nicholson didn’t like cheese sandwiches, and so he...

“The Shining” has obsessed Oscar-winning Pixar director Lee Unkrich since he saw it in theaters at the age of 12. After years of “The Shining” Easter eggs popping up in Pixar films, Unkrich’s fascination with Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 horror cult classic culminates in his monumental making-of book: “Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining” (Taschen), currently available in a Collector’s Edition of 1,000 copies. (A smaller standard edition has not yet been announced.) The three-volume collection includes hundreds of never-before-seen production photographs from the Stanley Kubrick Archive in London, interviews with cast and crew, and a deluxe set of facsimile reproductions of ephemera from “the masterpiece of modern horror.”

Garrett Brown is among the most important figures in the history of cinematography. His invention of the Steadicam forever changed the way filmmakers approached camera motion. No longer reliant on dollies or cranes to track movement, camera operators could now mount the device to their bodies and walk or run freely to deliver smooth tracking shots. No longer did they have to worry about the bumps and shakes that a hand-held camera caused. Stanley Kubrick was one of the first filmmakers to immediately grasp the benefits of the new technology, professing that "it should revolutionize the way films are shot." The director heavily incorporated the Steadicam when shooting "The Shining," hiring Brown to operate the cameras and further pushing the tech to new limits -- even if it meant endangering his cameramen.

An ill-advised tour of the snow-bound Overlook Hotel, as seen in Stanley Kubrick's 1980 horror classic "The Shining," can find menace in several of its nooks and crannies. The grim history of the hotel would leave supernatural traces behind –- Scatman Crothers' chef and telepath Dick Hallorann would liken the old hotel's malevolent presence to the scent of burnt toast –- in bloody elevators and time-warped ballrooms. However, one of the most intimidating places on the hotel grounds is a time-honored obstacle for fictional heroes: a towering labyrinthian maze, complete with its own axe-swinging monster.
Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) emerges as the Overlook's greatest weapon, prompting him to attack his family and chase his terrified child Danny (Danny Lloyd) into a nearby snow-flecked hedge maze in the film's climax (read more about the ending from /Film's Max Evry). An early scene in the film gives dimension to the maze without spoilers:

It's been 15 years since the movie premiered, and people are still talking about that ending to "The Mist." It's an ending that almost seems happy on the surface: The storm turns out to not be nearly as all-encompassing as it originally appeared, and the military is now swooping in to save the day. David Drayton (Thomas Jane) will not be eaten by Lovecraftian monsters after all, and the world will presumably go back to normal pretty soon. The only problem is that he just shot his child and the other survivors in his car. For the rest of his life, David will have to deal with the fact that his eight-year-old son would've been perfectly fine if he'd just waited a few more minutes.
It's a gut punch of an ending — one that shocks you to the core the first time around and makes rewatches nearly unbearable. As you watch that final scene again,...

Making a movie with Stanley Kubrick could be an exhausting experience. The perfectionist filmmaker was notorious for subjecting actors to take after take until he'd drained the acting out of the scene. He still holds the Guinness World Record for racking up 148 takes with Scatman Crothers and Danny Lloyd for the "shine" sequence on the set of "The Shining." And people generally put up with this because it was an honor to work with the reclusive director, whose every movie was treated as a cinematic event.
For his 1987 classic "Full Metal Jacket," Kubrick rounded up a group of young actors who worshiped him, and flung them into two separate hells: a Parris Island boot camp and Da Nang during the Vietnam War. Kubrick shot the Vietnam half at the abandoned Beckton Gas Works in London. The sprawling location had been used in films before (it's where James Bond disposes of...

Horror has always been a matter of perspective. The maniac with a knife just isn’t as intimidating when he’s facing off against a Swat team, and the only thing keeping Predator from turning into an all-out slasher flick is the size of the protagonists’ biceps. It’s a lot easier to fear for a helpless victim, and that’s why it makes sense that so many scary stories focus on children and childhood fears.
After all, what’s more vulnerable than a child? And with so many child-centric scary movies out there, we’ve come up with this list celebrating six of the best “Final Kid” performances in horror.
Talented child actors are hard to come by, so I think it’s time to shine a light on the pint-sized survivors that helped to make some of our favorite horror flicks so memorable.

Leon Vitali, one of Stanley Kubrick’s closest collaborators, died on Saturday night at the age of 74, Kubrick announced in a series of tweets Sunday.
“It is with the greatest of sadness that we have to tell you that the mainstay of a vast number of Kubrick’s films, Leon Vitali, passed away peacefully last night. Our thoughts are with his family and all that new and loved him. 26 July 1948 – 20 August 2022,” Kubrick wrote.
In a subsequent post, Kubrick continued, “Whether giving the performance of his life as Lord Bullingdon, portraying the ominous Red Cloak, providing BTS technical support on Fmj and attending the Cannes Film Festival 4K release of The Shining, Leon Vitali was the heartbeat of Kubrick’s films after the master himself.”

Leon Vitali, an actor in Barry Lyndon who went on to become director Stanley Kubrick’s right-hand man, died Friday in Los Angeles at age 74. His family confirmed his death to Associated Press, but no cause was given.
“Leon was a special and lovely man driven by his curiosity, who spread love and warmth wherever he went,” his children said in a statement provided by his daughter, Masha Vitali. “He will be remembered with love and be hugely missed by the many people he touched.”
Vitali was profiled in the 2017 documentary Filmworker, which spotlighted his contributions to Kubrick’ work. Filmmaker Tony Zierra’s noted that Vitali did everything from casting and coaching actors to overseeing restorations.

A 10-year-old playing a 33-year-old who’s pretending to be a nine-year-old is a tricky tightrope to walk for anybody, but then-preteen Isabelle Fuhrman achieved it with preternatural creepiness as the “little girl” Esther in 2009’s “Orphan.”
The Warner Bros. horror offering was an end-of-decade, word-of-mouth sleeper in spite of, and because of, its risible-on-paper plot — a nine-year-old Russian girl terrorizing her adoptive family is actually a 33-year-old Estonian woman with a rare hormonal disorder that stunts her physical growth. But what made the movie so sickly convincing and effective was how straight Jaume Collet-Serra’s direction and David Leslie Johnson’s screenplay played the ridiculous story. Still, it wouldn’t have worked without Fuhrman, now 25, and returning to the role 13 years later with Paramount’s sequel origin story, “Orphan: First Kill” (August 19), from “The Boy” director William Brent Bell.

It might be over four decades old, but "The Shining" has never stopped being a dazzlingly unfathomable piece of cinema. Like any of Stanley Kubrick's films, it was not so warmly received when it first premiered and is still famously disliked by Stephen King himself. The reason for the author's contention resulted from the liberties Kubrick took with his novel and the pivotal changes he made to the plot. One area that Kubrick intentionally wanted to avoid focusing too overtly on was the supernatural aspects of King's novel — especially the psychic abilities possessed by young Danny Torrance (Danny Lloyd) that tune him into the horrors...

After being impressed with Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey and A Clockwork Orange, Vitali told a friend, “I want to work for that guy.” He managed to get an audition for Kubrick’s next picture, Barry Lyndon, and landed the key role of Lord Bullingdon, the main antagonist of the film. Oliver doesn’t talk, though his speech therapist thinks he’s making some progress; he uses a sort of modern speak-and-spell app on his phone to communicate. His mom, Sarah (Gillian Jacobs), worries about him constantly. His dad, Marty (John Gallagher Jr.), isn’t sure how to help him either, which causes a lot of friction between the couple. The boy used to be pals with his classmate,...

Hey everyone! I’m the idiot who volunteered to write about The Shining, Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of Stephen King’s 1977 novel that over the past 40 years has already been run through the discourse grinder nine ways to Sunday. Even those few who haven’t seen it likely know the story: recovering (kinda) alcoholic Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) takes wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall) and son Danny (Danny Lloyd) to the remote Overlook hotel to serve as caretaker during the off-season and give Jack a chance to work on his book. Those plans are quickly derailed, however, as Danny’s burgeoning psychic ability (the “shine”) helps him see that the hotel is alive and less than friendly. Naturally, it possesses Jack, who attacks his family with an axe while spouting manic Ed McMahon impressions.
Personally, I quite enjoy the film as a dread-drenched blend of haunted house and possession story, and...

Hello, dear readers! For the last several years, we here at Daily Dead spend a few weeks celebrating the anniversaries of a batch of films from a particular year, and for 2020, we’ve decided to head back to the year 1980 to commemorate the 40th birthday for all the great horror and sci-fi movies that were released back then.
For those of you who may be looking to get into the spirit, I’ve gone ahead and put together this list of films from 1980 that are currently streaming on a variety of platforms, both free and ones that require a subscription. Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining turns 40 years old this week. Despite being the filmmaker’s late-in-life stab at commercialism after the failure of Barry Lyndon, his single attempt at horror remains one of the most artful, and hauntingly confounding, chillers ever produced. It turned Stephen King’s traditional haunted hotel yarn into a metaphysical nightmare of… well, just about anything you want. As Rodney Ascher’s Room 237 documentary explored, there are Kubrick conspiracy theorists who will tell you The Shining is about everything from white guilt over the generational mass murder of American Indians (plausible) to a confession of Kubrick’s complicity in faking the moon landing (bonkers). Ryan Lambie took a more evidence-based approach in considering the immutability of evil in Kubrick’s Overlook Hotel, which gets to the essence of the movie’s macabre ending where Jack Nicholson’s chipper axe murderer, Jack Torrance, joins the party of the dead forevermore.

Warner Bros.’ “Doctor Sleep,” a sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s seminal horror film “The Shining,” is hoping to scare some life into the box office.
Outside of Warner Bros.’ “Joker,” fall offerings such as Paramount and Skydance’s “Terminator: Dark Fate” and Disney’s “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” haven’t been as warmly embraced by moviegoers. As a result, domestic box office receipts have declined over 5% compared to last year, according to Comscore.
“Doctor Sleep” is eyeing the strong start among newcomers, but this weekend’s new nationwide offerings — including Universal’s romantic comedy “Last Christmas,” Paramount’s family film “Playing With Fire,” and Lionsgate’s historical drama “Midway” — will attempt to cater to a broad range of audiences.
“Doctor Sleep” should easily win the weekend with ticket sales expected to reach $25 million to $30 million when it launches in 3,800 North American theaters. Mike Flanagan (Netflix’s “The Haunting of Hill House...

[Warning: Mild spoilers for “Doctor Sleep” ahead.]
The filmmakers behind Warner Bros.’ “Doctor Sleep” — based on Stephen King’s 2013 follow-up novel to “The Shining” — knew they had big shoes to fill, so they got creative in paying homage to the original book and 1980s movie.
Though the sequel is set decades after the first film, “Doctor Sleep” features an appearance by Danny Lloyd, the actor best known for playing young Danny Torrance in “The Shining.” Lloyd’s cameo marks the now 47-year-old’s first professional acting gig since he starred in the horror classic at age 6. Lloyd has largely stayed out of the spotlight since then, save for an appearance in the 1982 TV movie “Will: The Autobiography of G. Gordon Liddy.”
“[Lloyd] was excited to do [the cameo]. He hadn’t acted since [the original],” producer Trevor Macy told Variety on the red carpet at Tuesday night’s premiere at Regency Village Theatre in Westwood. “He’s a schoolteacher, and a very successful one at that,...

The tension between Stephen King’s 1977 novel “The Shining” and Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 adaptation has lingered for decades, from King’s disdain for the movie to its legion of fans who obsess over every Easter egg in the frame. Mike Flanagan’s “Doctor Sleep” is a literary reckoning that enters into the center of that battlefield, attempting an ambitious homage to Kubrick and King as well as an adaptation of King’s own “Shining” sequel, while proving why — as King himself has said many times — the original book and movie never could click.
With his superb Netflix series “Haunting of Hill House” and previous King adaptation “Gerald’s Game,” Flanagan proved himself adept at combining genuine pathos with deep-seated dread. “Doctor Sleep” musters a similar combination with an intriguing look at intergenerational addiction and childhood fears, stuffed into an alluring gothic horror landscape. Nearly 40 years after The Shining became a pop culture classic, Warner Bros. is revisiting Stephen King's world with Doctor Sleep. Ewan McGregor stars as the now-adult Danny Torrace (previously played by Danny Lloyd), who in the original film was revealed to have psychic abilities ("the shining") that allowed him to see the horrific past of the Overlook Hotel where he and his family were staying.

The Overlook Hotel made Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) wildly obsessive in Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining,” and it pretty much did the same thing to director Mike Flanagan when he stepped behind the camera for “Doctor Sleep.”
The upcoming Warner. Bros horror film is based on Stephen King’s 2013 sequel novel to “The Shining,” following an adult Danny Torrance (Ewan McGregor) as he wrestles with his father’s dark legacy and the reemergence of his supernatural powers. Flanagan has already gone on record saying his “Doctor Sleep” film will be an adaptation of King’s novel that also takes into consideration Kubrick’s 1980 film adaptation. The latter component led Flanagan on an obsessive mission to recreate the Overlook Hotel exactly as it appears in “The Shining.”...

We visited the set of Doctor Sleep, the sequel to The Shining, and got a look at the movie's version of the Overlook Hotel!
A funeral procession passes us on the left, as we ride a shuttle to Blackhall Studios in Atlanta, the soundstages where Doctor Sleep, the sequel to The Shining, is being filmed. We drive through a long, wooded road, decrepit houses begging to be demolished on either side of us. They look like haunted places, shells of the past that refuse to die. Much like the Overlook Hotel itself, as we'll soon find out.
When we arrive, we're quickly ushered into Stage 7. Nothing else is filming at Blackhall at the moment, according to our driver, who reveals that the Dwayne Johnson-starring Jungle Cruise has recently wrapped. Doctor Sleep has the soundstages to itself, day 39 of a 50-day shoot. Walking through its gaping mouth,...

The first trailer for Doctor Sleep, the highly anticipated sequel to The Shining, dropped Thursday and among the millions who checked it out was child actor Danny Lloyd, who played Danny Torrance in the Stanley Kubrick classic.
His initial reaction: "I was surprised."

Though Stephen King’s 2013 novel Doctor Sleep acts as a follow-up to 1977’s The Shining, we imagine there are still plenty of horror fans out there who are familiar with the story of the latter but not the former. With a big screen adaptation of the sequel on the way though, that’s all about to change.
As you may know, director Stanley Kubrick brought The Shining to theaters in 1980 with a movie starring Danny Lloyd as as a psychic young boy named Danny Torrance. For Mike Flanagan’s Doctor Sleep, Ewan McGregor will play the adult Danny and now, we have our very first look at him in the role thanks to the trailer up above.
Of course, this particular project, along with Shining prequel Overlook Hotel, has been in development for quite a long time, passing through the hands of many different filmmakers. But ever since It set the box office on fire,...

Few movies carry the weight of expectations this year as “Doctor Sleep,” the upcoming Stephen King adaptation from horror maestro Mike Flanagan. The film is a sequel to “The Shining” and casts Ewan McGregor as an adult Danny Torrence. Considering Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 “Shining” adaptation is considered one of the best horror movies ever made, there’s a lot of pressure on “Doctor Sleep” to deliver terror later this year.
“Doctor Sleep” picks up with Danny tormented from the events of childhood. The character is an alcoholic whose supernatural “shining” abilities reawaken when he tries to get sober. Danny’s journey gets complicated (and scary) when he meets a young girl who shares his gifts while working at a hospice center. Joining McGregor in the cast are Rebecca Ferguson, Carl Lumbly, and Alex Essoe.
Following Kubrick’s “The Shining” is certainly no easy task, but horror fans should feel confident with Flanagan behind the camera.

In the history of motion-picture technology, few operators have had a more profound effect on camera movement than Garrett Brown. While dollies and cranes were Hollywood’s go-to platforms into the late ’60s, Brown’s ingenious camera rig — dubbed the Pole and later renamed Steadicam — started a photographic breakthrough that’s still growing 50 years later.
Preceding the prototype’s successful debut in 1972 for ABC Sports (covering female jockey Robyn Smith on a 600-foot uncut walk from weighing room to paddock), Brown sent out an “impossible shots” reel that included a scene of his girlfriend and future wife Ellen ascending the 72 steps at the entrance of the Philadelphia Museum of Art with, miraculously, nary a camera wobble.
One of the people who saw that reel included director John Avildsen, and sure enough Brown’s invention landed three colossal projects in 1975 alone: Avildsen’s “Rocky,” Hal Ashby’s “Bound for Glory” and John Schlesinger’s “Marathon Man.
