A new Spike Lee Joint is in the works that will reunite the director with Denzel Washington. Apple Original Films is partnering with A24 on “High and Low,” an English-language adaptation of the 1963 Akira Kurosawa crime film of the same name.
“High and Low” marks the first time Washington and Lee will work together since 2006’s “Inside Man.” It will be their fifth film together in addition to “Mo’ Better Blues,” “Malcolm X,” and “He Got Game.”
The project also brings back together Washington and Todd Black, who produced “Fences,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” and “The Equalizer” films. Washington previously starred in another Apple and A24 film, Joel Coen’s 2022 “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” which netted Denzel his 10th Oscar nomination.
Production on “High and Low” will start in March. A24 plans to release the film theatrically before it streams on Apple TV+.

Denzel Washington being cast in Antoine Fuqua’s upcoming Netflix movie as ancient Carthaginian general Hannibal is sparking some controversy in Tunisia, the home country of the great military commander.
According to French newspaper Courrier International, there are complaints about depicting the Carthaginian general as a Black African being made in the media and the Tunisian parliament. Member of Parliament Yassine Mami has pointed out that Hannibal, who was born in 247 BC in Carthage – now known as Tunis, the Tunisian capital – was of West Asian Semitic origin. “There is a risk of falsifying history: we need to take position on this subject,” the Tunisian politician reportedly stated.
Concurrently, French-language Tunisian newspaper La Presse has published an editorial in which it similarly objects that depicting Hannibal as a Black African is “according to Tunisians and many observers, a historical error.”
However, Tunisian culture minister Hayet Ketat-Guermazi had a different, more pragmatic take on the matter.

Jesus Christ, that's Jason Bourne ... again.
In a bit of breaking news from Deadline, it looks like Edward Berger, the Academy Award-winning director of "All Quiet On The Western Front" will be following up his World War I anti-war film by helming the next installment of one of the biggest American action franchises of all time. According to Deadline's sources, Universal Pictures is looking to revisit the "Bourne" franchise, with Berger following in the footsteps of directors Doug Liman, Paul Greengrass, and Tony Gilroy. The film is said to still be in early development, Berger is still in negotiations, and a script has yet to be written, and Universal did not provide a comment to confirm any of the information. As it stands, Berger would be the only attachment to the project at the time of deal-making.

Denzel Washington is teaming up once again with his “Training Day” and “Equalizer” director Antoine Fuqua to play the ancient Carthaginian general Hannibal in an untitled Netflix movie, Variety has confirmed.
The film will be written by John Logan, the three-time Academy Award winner who scribed Martin Scorsese’s “The Aviator” and Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator.”
According to the official logline, the movie is “based on real-life warrior Hannibal, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest military commanders in history. The film covers the pivotal battles he led against the Roman Republic during the Second Punic War.”
Hannibal invaded Italy while riding a Northern African war elephant. Under his lead, the Carthaginians won key victories against the Romans, allowing Hannibal to occupy the majority of southern Italy for 15 years. Eventually, Hannibal was defeated by the Romans at the Battle of Zama after they counter-invaded North Africa.

Denzel Washington closes out his action trilogy with this year’s The Equalizer 3. Antoine Fuqua has thrown around the idea of exploring the early days of the character in the franchise, and perhaps Denzel’s son, John David Washington, could possibly step into the role for the younger incarnation. Meanwhile, Robert McCall’s last outing will be coming to digital platforms tomorrow, November 7. Sony has now unveiled the details for the Blu-ray, 4K Uhd and DVD releases.
The third film’s synopsis from Sony reads,
“Since giving up his life as a government assassin, Robert McCall (Denzel Washington) has struggled to reconcile the horrific things he’s done in the past and finds a strange solace in serving justice on behalf of the oppressed. Finding himself surprisingly at home in Southern Italy, he discovers his new friends are under the control of local crime bosses. As events turn deadly, McCall...

In 2014, Denzel Washington re-teamed with Antoine Fuqua for the first time since the Oscar-winning crime drama, Training Day. This time around, the two heavyweights revived the popular TV series The Equalizer for the big screen. The original series was a smash hit in the 80s and followed a retired Intelligence Agent who dished out justice to those targeting the weak and vulnerable. The Equalizer movie stayed true to the premise of the show and kept the lead character’s name of Robert McCall. However, it stepped up the ante in the violence department. To that, The Equalizer became an action...

After multiple Oscars, Silver Bears, Golden Globes, Grammys and a Tony, Denzel Washington has earned the right to be called one of the greatest actors of our time. He could drop the surname and still be instantly recognisable – two syllables that guarantee acting excellence.
Key to his success is his ability to mesmerise an audience into seeing past his instantly recognisable face and observing only the character. It’s arguably the central tenet to any actor’s success, yet it is with unusual success and consistency that Denzel Washington has been able to shift from character to character seemingly with ease. This is an actor who rarely repeats himself.
The need for variety and the consistency of execution makes his sole franchise role all the more intriguing. Today sees the digital premiere for the third entry in The Equalizer series, with his Training Day director Antoine Fuqua ending the trilogy...

With the return of fan favorites like Robert McCall in Equalizer 3 and John Kramer in the recently released Saw X, 2023 seems to be the year that bad guys relearn the significance of the saying—mess around and find out. Another thing they have in common is that, despite the vast differences between their modus operandi, in their own ways, both of these characters test how much their opposition, or victims, value the worth of their lives, by providing them with a chance.
Anyway, after the poor reception of the last Saw franchise entry, Spiral, the makers made the right choice by letting Tobin Bell reprise the role of John Kramer, the infamous Jigsaw killer. This time, not in flashbacks, but in the proper lead, with perhaps the most screen time attributed to him in this venture compared to all previous entries. In years to come, for series fans, Saw X...

The final chapter as the trailer mentioned is apt as I really hope they do not make another one. After Equalizer 2 which lacked a clear story due to its multiple storylines, Equalizer 3 does a better job with the story. Although it is predictable, it is more focused and tight, so there are no huge expectations with it. Antoine Fuqua returns to direct this movie with Denzel Washington reprising his role as Robert McCall in the only franchise trilogy that he has been a part of. Equalizer 3 is a run-of-the-mill formulaic action film carried by a strong Denzel Washington performance.

The fall movie season is off to a slightly better start than last year, as "The Nun II" scared up a big opening weekend, easily topping the charts. That means Denzel Washington's "The Equalizer 3" had to settle for second place in the battle of the sequels at the box office. Even so, the actor's third go-around as Robert McCall still crossed a new milestone by passing $100 million globally.
Director Antoine Fuqua's "Equalizer 3" earned $12.1 million domestically in its second weekend at the box office, per The Numbers. Unfortunately, that means the sequel dropped a steep 65% in its second frame when compared to its $34.6 million debut last weekend. That said, the film also had the Monday Labor Day holiday under its belt, which might have made it even more front-loaded than it might otherwise have been. So if we were dealing with a standard, three-day first weekend and the movie had a 65% drop,...

Carrying around the label of America’s greatest living actor must be quite a tricky thing to have to do. You’re going about your business, trying to pick interesting projects, keeping yourself challenged. But people watch you and your acting, and want to know you, what makes you tick, how it feels to be one of America’s greatest living actors. Denzel Washington has managed to handle that mantle with grace, and while maintaining a very old-school kind of movie star mystique.
Washington’s endless charisma and ability to be both engagingly ironic and deeply sincere run through his most formative roles, along with a sense of conscience and responsibility – which he’s kicked against from time to time, too. Whichever way he pushes, he’s been malleable enough to find more gold.

Despite the billions of dollars that have been invested in DC movies over the last decade, the most successful cinematic universe that doesn't have "Marvel" in the name is actually the one that spawned from James Wan's 2013 movie "The Conjuring." Alongside the primary movies about demon-hunters Ed and Lorraine Warren, the franchise has also expanded into spin-offs. Corin Hardy's 2018 film "The Nun," based around the demonic nun first seen in "The Conjuring 2," scored the biggest opening weekend for any "Conjuring" universe so far: an impressive $53.8 million that immediately eclipsed its $22 million production budget.

Labor Day weekend has come and gone, meaning that the summer moviegoing season is essentially over. Now we're onto fall, which is far less certain for theaters in terms of financial prospects, as a mixed bag of releases are on the way in the coming months. The Equalizer 3, on course to finish the holiday as the second highest Labor Day domestic box office weekend ever, is a fitting snapshot of the disciplined manner in which Denzel Washington built one of the great careers of his generation. The final installment of his first franchise cost a reported $70 million, modest compared to most third franchise installments, and Washington has always been cognizant of the need to make money for investors of his films.
“I feel like I’ve just been chopping wood,” Washington said years back in describing his approach and the slow road to making $20 million a picture. “I found my wheelhouse in films that cost $50 million, which, if they open at $20 million, will give the studios their money back. Nobody has asked me to put on tights for one of those superhero movies, and I’m not saying I wouldn’t have wanted to make...

It has been over five years since Washington appeared as Robert McCall in “The Equalizer 2,” also directed by Antoine Fuqua, but it’s been almost 20 years since he starred with young Dakota Fanning in 2004’s “Man on Fire.” Sony’s “The Equalizer 3” brought them all back together, as it was released into 3,965 theaters on Friday after making $3.8 million in Thursday previews.

The way we see it, Robert McCall is a wretched soul who is condemned to a pitiful, lonely existence to make amends for a life-long inclination to bloodshed and violence. The Ocd-afflicted veteran killing machine, who, despite his efforts to make human connection, prefers to never open up about his emotional turmoil, actually conveys pent-up guilt, pain, anguish, and an ever-present, simmering rage through his cold, steely gaze. Therefore, for a person like Robert, who perhaps doesn’t believe in the concept of redemption, attaining peace is a far-fetched fantasy. Even a small chance of that fantasy turning into reality is too precious to Robert, and when its existence is threatened, you better know there will be severe repercussions.

In recent years, Denzel Washington has devoted the bulk of his attention to performing the works of great playwrights like Shakespeare and August Wilson. But his latest turn in “The Equalizer 3” proves that he hasn’t lost his knack for action filmmaking. If anything, he was a little too eager to get back in the saddle as the revenge-seeking vigilante Robert McCall.
In a new interview with Yahoo! Entertainment, “The Equalizer 3” director Antoine Fuqua recalled working with Washington on the Italy-set sequel. The filmmaker said that Washington was not only willing to get dirty and perform his own stunts, but he often had to be stopped for his own safety.
“He’s still got it,” Fuqua said. “He trains every day. I’d have to tell Denzel, ‘Let me get the stunt guy to do this one,’ He’s like ‘I got it!’ You have to protect him from himself!

The third instalment in the Denzel Washington-led “Equalizer” franchise topped the domestic box office this weekend with $34.5 million according to studio estimates Sunday. By the end of the Monday holiday, Sony expects that total will rise to $42 million.
Labor Day signals the end of Hollywood’s summer movie season, which will surpass $4 billion in ticket sales for the first time since the pandemic thanks in no small part to “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer”, which are still netting records even after seven weeks in theatres. This weekend, Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” officially became the biggest movie of 2023 with over $1.36 billion globally, surpassing “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”, while Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” sailed past $850 million globally to become the No. 3 movie of the year and Nolan’s third highest grossing.

Denzel Washington has managed to avoid sequels and franchises for most of his career, but there is one exception: "The Equalizer," a movie reboot of the 1980s TV series that has since become Washington's first movie trilogy. All three movies were directed by Antoine Fuqua, whose working relationship with Washington dates back to 2001's "Training Day." Now, the early box office numbers for "The Equalizer 3" -- ostensibly the final outing for Washington's Robert McCall -- are in, and they're ending the 2023 summer box office on a high note.
More specifically, they've pushed the box office to its first $4 billion summer since the pandemic began, per The Hollywood Reporter. The movie grossed $13.1 million on its opening day and is expected to make between $42 million and $43.5 million over the Labor Day weekend, with a three-day total of $35 million. Denzel Washington stars as Robert McCall in Columbia Pictures The Equalizer 3. Photo by: Stefano Montesi Nearly 20 years ago, Denzel Washington starred in a movie called Man on Fire, and his co-star was 9-year-old Dakota Fanning. Flash forward to today, and the two of them are co-starring in another film, The Equalizer 3.” Except this time, of course, Fanning is no longer a child — she’s 29 years old and an established Hollywood veteran. When we spoke to Washington about working with Fanning again, he told us it felt odd to see his old co-star in a new light. On paper, the action and horror genres seem like they'd be strange bedfellows. After all, the general aim of action films is to provide adrenaline-fueled thrills, while horror movies are intended to disturb, scare, and unnerve.
Yet in practice, the genres blend far better and far more often than may be expected. I can still remember schoolyard chums excitedly recounting the ways in which Bruce Willis' John McClane dispatched terrorists in "Die Hard 2" (such as when he shoves an icicle into a baddie's eye), kills that would be wholly appropriate in a "Friday the 13th" or "A Nightmare on Elm Street" film. Hollywood producers certainly saw the connections; Renny Harlin, who directed "Die Hard 2," won the gig after making horror films like "Prison" and "A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master."
In 2023, the action and horror genres have long been considered an excellent peanut-butter-and-chocolate combo, with much cross-pollination happening within them.

Denzel Washington’s “The Equalizer 3” is showing some box office virtuosity, taking flight in its domestic debut after grossing $13.1 million on opening day from 3,241 venues. That includes $3.8 million in Thursday previews, boosted by showtimes in premium large format auditoriums.
The third and ostensibly final entry in Sony’s action series is gunning for the second-highest Labor Day weekend opening in history. The holiday isn’t typically a boon for box office, though Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” set a record two years ago with a $94.6 million four-day opening. “Equalizer 3” won’t reach those heights, but it’s contending against the runner-up for the record — Rob Zombie’s “Halloween” remake, which stabbed into $30 million in 2007. After Friday, the new vigilante film, co-financed by Sony, Tsg and Eagle Pictures, is projecting a four-day opening north of $42 million.

The leaves are changing and pumpkin spice is on tap, which can only mean one thing: fall is upon us — and with it a bevy of movies that could very well influence this year’s Oscar race and end-of-year lists.
In spite of the ongoing SAG-AFTRA/WGA strike, movies are still coming out. But it will be interesting to see how the dual strike affects promotion, box office and this year’s Oscars race. Regardless, there’s something for everyone. Big awards heavy-hitters like “Maestro” and “Saltburn” will be on film buffs most anticipated lists, while blockbusters like “The Creator” and “Saw X” will charm those just looking for a good time at the movies.

Spoilers for "The Equalizer 3" follow.
Antoine Fuqua's new film "The Equalizer 3" takes place in a placid, seaside Italian village where the vicious vigilante Robert McCall (Denzel Washington) has come to rest. Well, more specifically, McCall is there to recover from a bullet wound after having infiltrated a gangster's Italian lair and murdered him and about a hundred of his thugs. While he recovers, McCall finds that he likes the town's quaint storefronts and friendly locals, eventually realizing that he'd like to retire to this place as soon as possible. Before that can happen, though, he first has to murder several hundred more mafiosi who aim to bully the hamlet's shopowners from their buildings, tear the town down, and build garish casinos in its place.

“The Equalizer 3” is here, once again directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Denzel Washington. This time around Washington’s Robert McCall finds himself in beautiful Italy, where he runs afoul of the local mafia and has to kill them all in increasingly creative ways. It’s supposed to be the last in the franchise that was based off of the 1980s TV series, but this could be the best of the bunch, with Washington in top form.
TheWrap spoke to director Fuqua about his fifth (!) collaboration with Washington, bringing things home with “Equalizer 3,” his experience working on Disney’s “King Arthur” and the version of the “Miami Vice” he briefly developed with Michael Mann.
Action franchises are built in different ways — sometimes the stunts come first and the story is modeled around that, sometimes locations inform story. How do you build “Equalizer” movies?

Review: I absolutely love the Equalizer movies. It seems no one is making straight-forward action thrillers nowadays other than Antoine Fuqua, who’s become the greatest master of the genre since the late Tony Scott. His movies are taut, efficient and packed with gruesome, R-rated action. They know precisely what they are, and if this is the final Equalizer film, it perfectly closes out the only big-screen trilogy of Denzel Washington’s career.
Robert McCall is a perfect character for Denzel. At seventy years old, Washington has the right mix of righteous anger, world-weariness and kindness to do the character justice. One thing I always loved about the franchise was how...

In the opening scene of Antoine Fuqua’s The Equalizer 3, Denzel Washington shoots a bad guy in the ass. This is not a metaphor. Two-time Oscar-winner, and nine-time-nominated, Denzel Washington picks up a shotgun and blows a second hole into the il culo of a Sicilian gangster; which gives new meaning to making someone’s ass grass.
It is also entirely on this wavelength that The Equalizer 3 coasts, flatly, gorily, but not altogether unpleasantly. For an actor of Washington’s caliber, it’s slumming, but his charm suggests he doesn’t much mind. Like his character, the performer seems to be on a working vacation where the midday cappuccinos and late night glasses of vino at a picturesque Italian cafe (at which Washington always has the best and same exact seat) make up for all the drudgery he must trudge through.

While it’s certainly nice to get a change of scenery from the Boston travelogue of the first two films in the Equalizer series, Italy, at least on paper, might seem like an odd, random choice of locale for Antoine Fuqua to wrap up the trilogy. But not long after The Equalizer 3 opens on an Italian man and his son cruising toward a Sicilian vineyard, it all starts to make sense: The fertile soil and pathways to the main villa are strewn with mutilated bodies, all the way down into a basement where the shadowy figure of Robert McCall (Denzel Washington) looks upon the aforementioned man with a casually predatory indifference.
Those opening minutes justify the trek to Italy more than any of the delicious-looking cappuccinos that McCall downs later in the film. Despite always being on the side of swift justice for the little guys of the world,...

Academy Award-winner Denzel Washington is returning to theaters across the United States this weekend! Washington’s newest film “The Equalizer 3” began offering preview screenings earlier this week in preparation for its official theatrical debut on Sept. 1.
The film stars Washington as Robert McCall, an ex-Marine and Dia officer. McCall has a unique and dangerous skillset, and is wounded putting those skills to use on a mission in Sicily. While recovering he makes some new friends, but finds out they are under the control of a secretive Italian crime organization. Determined to free them, McCall sets out to uproot the organization no matter the cost.
Reviews have called the film formulaic but still entertaining, and it carries a 74% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with 92% of preview audiences agreeing. The film’s action sequences get special praise, as does Washington’s predictably outstanding performance. The movie also stars Dakota Fanning and David Denman.

‘The Equalizer 3” began its domestic box office sprint with $3.8 million. That’s well above the $1.4 million Thursday preview gross of “The Equalizer” in 2014 and just above the $3.1 million earned by “The Equalizer 2” in 2018.
Inflation and earlier preview showtimes notwithstanding, that’s a strong sign that this third installment of the franchise, which stars Denzel Washington as former special ops agent Robert McCall who periodically goes vigilante defending the defenseless, will open on par with the $34-$36 million earned by its predecessors over their respective opening weekends. Sony is hoping for $40 million over the four-day Labor Day holiday, and they just might get it.
Even with mixed-negative reviews, this is a pure star+IP sell. That said, it’s less about the CBS television show and more about a biblically serious Denzel Washington unleashing horrific but justifiable vengeance against very bad dudes. This is a star+IP situation where...

Denzel Washington is back as professional killer Robert McCall in “The Equalizer 3,” which has made $3.8 million in previews at the box office.
The R-rated, action thriller is expected to make between $28 million and $30 million in its opening weekend. With the Labor Day holiday on Monday, it could grow from $33 million to $40 million in the four-day frame. That will be enough to claim the No. 1 spot at the box office this weekend, beating Sony’s “Gran Turismo,” which topped the charts last week.
“The Equalizer 3” will have the smallest three-day opening of the franchise, following the $34 million debut for the original “Equalizer” in 2014 and its 2018 sequel’s $36 million launch. Both of those movies grossed over $100 million at the domestic box office and nearly $200 million globally.
Antoine Fuqua, who directed the first two movies and “Training Day” with Washington, returned to helm the third and final “Equalizer” installment. This time,...

It's been nearly five years since "The Equalizer 2" hit theaters, and on Sept. 1, Denzel Washington is returning to the big screen as Robert McCall in the action-packed "The Equalizer 3." The film, which also stars Dakota Fanning, is the third installment of the film series featuring Washington and the fifth in the Equalizer franchise, which includes the 1985 and 2021 TV shows. The original show premiered in 1985 and starred Edward Woodward as Robert McCall, a former covert operations officer turned private detective who uses his specialized training and skills to solve the problems of his clients and bring perpetrators to justice.
After the first "Equalizer" TV series ended in 1989, it inspired the 2014 film adaptation with Washington, as well as the reboot series featuring Queen Latifah as Robyn McCall, a woman version of the famous vigilante. Unlike the previous films in the Equalizer film series, "The Equalizer 3...

Moments into the inelegantly titled The Equalizer 3, the trilogy capper that reunites director Antoine Fuqua, and screenwriter Richard Wenk (The Equalizer and The Equalizer 2), with two-time Oscar winner Denzel Washington, two men -- one obviously frightened by what he's seen and heard, another maddened by the intrusion on his private property -- take an unplanned tour of an Italian winery decorated with the dismembered bodies and spilled blood of the latter’s henchmen, before encountering Washington’s title character, Robert McCall, an ex-dia-agent-assassin-turned-vigilante-hero, sitting quietly in a backroom, guns pointed at his head.
