When you go to a movie called “The Modelizer,” you assume certain things about your protagonist: that he’ll be a smooth-talking, pricelessly well-dressed cad, one who values women too much for certain assets (their looks) and not enough for others (everything else), and that the film will be engineered to give him a comeuppance. All that is true of “The Modelizer.”
What you don’t expect is that the movie, in this case, is going to take all that sexist-swinger-as-master-of-the-universe stuff and put it on one-percent-of-the-one-percent steroids. “The Modelizer” is set in Hong Kong, which the movie keeps reminding us is the most expensive city in the world. The hero, Shawn Koo (Byron Mann), is the scion of an outrageously wealthy Chinese real-estate family; they own one-third of the property in Hong Kong. Shawn, who sees each of his parents once a month and serves as their company’s managing director,...

Opening in theaters and on VOD July 14, Vertical’s “The Modelizer” offers a trailer that sells a romantic comedy that’s part of a new wave of “Hong Kong Films,” which are original features where the subject matter is distinctly Hong Kong but is in English.
Directed by Keoni Waxman and produced, written by and starring Byron Mann (who has seemingly aged about ten minutes since playing Ryu in the 1994 “Street Fighter” movie), the picture is a conventional mix of rom-com tropes (a well-off womanizer must change his ways once he finds someone – played by Rayssa Bratillieri — worth settling down for) and wealth porn, with the obvious hook being that it’s from a locale that isn’t often presented in such a fashion in mainstream Hollywood flicks.
The locale is usually for stranger-in-a-strange-land actioners like Dwayne Johnson’s “Skyscraper” (who co-starred Mann) and Rowann Atkinson’s “Johnny English Reborn...

Exclusive: Vertical has acquired North American rights to Keoni Waxman’s romantic comedy The Modelizer, written by and starring Byron Mann (The Big Short), slating the film for a day-and-date release on July 14th.
Set in Hong Kong’s high octane, ultra-rich fast-lane, The Modelizer follows Shawn Koo (Mann), son of a Chinese tycoon family, and his partner-in-clubbing Narin “Bucky” Sakpiporn (K-pop star Nichkhun), who enjoy a lavish lifestyle of parties, privilege and international model girlfriends. After a string of short-term relationships, Shawn gets a wake-up call, realizing that all the money in the world is not enough to buy the love of a woman. As he begins falling for the charming yet defiant Camila (Rayssa Bratillieri), a Brazilian model unaccustomed to his lifestyle, Shawn must change his tactics and clean up his act if he intends to win her heart.

Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
Last editorial, I pondered if the best films in the Amityville Horror franchise are the paired entries. As we cross off the seventh entry, that suspicion holds true. Amityville: A New Generation has decent ambition for a franchise creeping towards double digits; it simply needed a few tweaks in its execution. At the end of the day, the film feels aggressively early 90s direct-to-video horror, slightly better than something like a mid-range Candyman or Hellraiser.
The 1993 film is set in an apartment complex whose residents are an artist collective. The film uses the same formula as The Amityville Curse for its characters (a combination of lovers and friends), as well as It’s About Time and 3-D (a new haunted object). In this case,...

It's likely that Peter Gould will be a name remembered throughout television history. After all, he helped write some of the best episodes of "Breaking Bad," including a small episode that introduced a certain strip-mall lawyer with connections to the drug trade. When that series exploded in popularity and acclaim, he was promoted to co-showrunner of its spinoff, "Better Call Saul," working on the series until its recent, heart-wrenching finale. With these two shows under his belt, it's safe to say that he's already cemented his legacy.
Of course, he didn't start his writing career off on such a high note, as he had to work his way up to the status he's achieved now. As a young man pursuing an Mfa at the University of Southern California, he primarily directed commercials until his big break in Hollywood came in the form of a film adaptation of a popular arcade beat-em-up named "Double Dragon.

“Crazy Rich Asians” author Kevin Kwan didn’t have to look far for role models when he decided to be a writer. His aunt was a journalist in his native Singapore at The Singapore Monitor.
“At the time, it was a new newspaper. I remember when the first issue came out, there was so much excitement when she brought it home and seeing her byline and her photograph,” Kwan says from his home in Los Angeles. “I am very thankful that I came from a highly creative family where the arts and being creative was appreciated. My mother is a pianist, and has taught for more than 50 years. She’s 81 now. During the pandemic, she learned how to teach on FaceTime.”
I spoke to Kwan ahead of his Asian Hall of Fame conversation taking place Thursday with his cousin, “Flower Drum Song” star and Golden Globe winner Nancy Kwan, and actor Julia Nickson.

Viva Pictures has acquired North America rights to Quentin Lee’s The Unbidden, following its world premiere at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival last week.

What sets Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone's action heroes apart from one another?
There are spoilers within for Predator, Terminator 2, Cobra, the Rambo and Rocky films, and Big Momma's House 2 (just seeing if you're paying attention there).
Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. At a certain point, you cannot think of one without the other. Action icons of the 80s, they are as synonymous with 80spop culture as the side ponytail, hair metal and New Coke. For action fans they are yin and yang, the flip sides of the same sweaty bicep. While they bear some superficial similarities, their star personas are actually quite different.
Stallone - The Underdog
Though he boasts a bulky physique comparable to the former Mr Universe, the essence of Stallone’s appeal is that he is inherently an underdog — this is why he is perfect for Rocky Balboa, and miscast in Cobra and Judge Dredd.

The film follows "four best friends who get together for a spirit-settling seance the night before Halloween and are intruded upon by a young man who claims that one of them is his mother," according to the official synopsis. The intruder then "unravels a past crime that has been haunting them for two decades." The Asian-American cast includes Tamlyn Tomita, Julia Nickson, Amy Hill, Elizabeth Sung, Jason Yee, Karin Anna Cheung, Kimberley Rose-Wolter, and Michelle Krusiec, with newcomers Akemi Look and Hayden Szeto rounding out the ensemble. “Amityville: A New Generation” (1993)
Directed By: John Murlowski
Written By: Christopher DeFaria & Antonio Toro
Starring: Ross Patridge (Keyes Terry), Julia Nickson (Suki), Terry O’Quinn (Detective Clark), Lala Sloatman (Llanie), David Naughton (Dick Cutler), Barbara Howard (Janet Cutler), Jack Orend (Franklin Bonner), Richard Roundtree (Pauli), Robert Russler (Ray)
After seeing this films predecessor “Amityville 1992: It’s About Time” I had pretty high hopes for this movie as I felt that film at least gave some life back in to this aging franchise. When I was done watching “A New Generation” I was a bit let down. While this movie follows the same theme as the fourth and sixth movies, it is clearly the weakest in terms of keeping the story coherent.
The story involves a young man Keyes Terry who is given a mirror by a by a person he sees randomly on the side of the road.

Jon and Al Kaplan are at it again, taking another iconic action film and re-imagining it as a musical comedy. The duo, who have composed music for film and television, are responsible for humorous aural updatings to such flicks as Total Recall, Conan the Barbarian, and Fatal Attraction. Now they're back to lampoon the Sylvester Stallone film Rambo: First Blood Part II with You Not Expendable.
This tender and uplifting track features Stallone and Julia Nickson sound-alikes sharing a special moment as Stallone continues on his journey to find American POWs in Vietnam. In typical Kaplan fashion, it's not only a great tune, but the video is expertly edited so that the lyrics are even more poignant.
The funniest part of this clip is undoubtedly the contrast of the voices. Nickson's replacement sings every line in her broken English with a showy and melodramatic style that is completely opposite of...

Having inspired everything from ardent film student party chatter to the pure cinematic showmanship of Luc Besson, Jean-Jacques Beineix's 1986 Oscar-nominated romantic drama has a legacy that reaches far and wide. This new print of Beineix's definitive 1991 cut of his oh so artsy tale of an aspiring writer Zorg (Jean-Hugues Anglade), his wild, volatile muse Betty (Béatrice Dalle) and her gradual descent into self-destruction contains more than an hour of additional footage that stretches out Betty's madness and embellishes it with such antics as Zorg's cross-dressing crime spree. In French with subtitles.
Opens in New York.
