Desplechin and Kent Jones and Julie Peyr adapted the script from the George Devereux book Psychotherapy Of A Plains Indian. It is about the author’s relationship and multidisciplinary study of Jimmy Picard, a Blackfoot Indian, who fought in World War II and suffered from psychological distress. Pascal Cauchetuex and Jennifer Roth produced while Worldview’s Christopher Woodrow and Molly Conners executive produced with Patrick Milling Smith and Ben Limberg. IFC is expected to release the film in early 2014. Arianna Bocco brokered for IFC, while CAA repped Worldview.

Michael Stephenson did something that’s kind of amazing: build a career out of appearing in what might be the worst film of all time. The actor and director toiled in relative obscurity for nearly two decades after the release of Troll 2, until he made the acclaimed documentary Best Worst Movie, which chronicled the history and cult status of the infamous horror debacle. There was word back in February that he’d tackle narrative filmmaking with a movie called Destroy, but he isn’t leaving the documentary format for good.
Collider says that he’s developing a new documentary, centered on homemade haunted houses and the people who make them. A title hasn’t been announced yet, but the name “Homemade House of Horrors” is being used in conjunction with the project, as the picture on the side tells you. I don’t know how everyone else feels, but that sounds perfect to me.

Being in IMDb’s Worst Movie of All-Time (Troll 2) hasn’t hurt actor-now-director Michael Stephenson. He found it cathartic to tell that tale in the horror documentary Best Worst Movie and now he’s latched onto Destroy, a new dark comedy with Black Swan producer, Jennifer Roth.
Here’s the press release: “Magic Stone Productions announced today it has acquired and will produce the feature film Destroy. Michael Paul Stephenson (Best Worst Movie) will direct this fast-paced dark comedy. In Destroy, vampires don’t exist, but that doesn’t stop well-intentioned would-be vampire hunter Steve Howard from leaving a trail of blood-splattered wooden stakes across Bavaria. While he thinks he’s saving the world, he and new assistant Elise are mistakenly murdering sweet, innocent old men.
Destroy’s tone lands it somewhere between ’80s genre classics like An American Werewolf in London and contemporary comedies like Shaun of the Dead.

Troll 2 Star To Helm Destroy
Some might know Michael Stephenson as the child star of film disaster Troll 2, possibly one of the worst movies ever made. So bad, in fact, that it has a cult following and has spawned a documentary by Stephenson called Best Worst Movie. Now Stephenson is helming his own dark comedy called Destroy, with producer Jennifer Roth of Black Swan in line to co-produce. Destroy has vampires, or at least a vampire-killer, so it should easily find an audience among today’s rabid vampire fans. The main character Steve Howard, an ambitious vampire hunter, hails from New Jersey and goes on a quest to rid the world of the evil undead. The only problem is, there aren’t any vampires. As he stakes his way across Bavaria he leaves only the corpses of little old men behind.

Though I wouldn't call being a child star in the awesomely bad 1990 horror flick Troll 2 that much of an achievement, actor Michael Stephenson put together an amazing documentary on the aforementioned film becoming a cult classic with Best Worst Movie. Now Stephenson is moving into narrative feature film territory with his next project Destroy. The dark comedy is set in a world where vampires don't exist but a makeshift vampire hunter is moving swiftly across Bavaria laying wooden stakes into hearts left and right. Little does he know that instead of keeping the world safe, he's just killing innocent old men in cold blood. THR revealed the news today with Lindsay Stephenson producing via her and Michael's Magic Stone Productions. What's really great for this project though is Black Swan producer Jennifer Roth is also producing the project. It never hurts to have a Best Picture nominated producer behind...

“Best Worst Movie” chronicles the rise of 1990’s infamous “Troll 2” (you know, where they wind up in the town of “Nilbog”, or goblin spelled backwards) from a largely forgotten footnote in the history of horror film to full-blown cult phenomenon. Director Michael Stephenson, who was the child star of “Troll 2”, has now parlayed the groundswell of popularity for his documentary into the opportunity to direct his first feature, a dark horror comedy called “Destroy”. In “Destroy” vampires don’t exist, but that doesn’t stop a well-intentioned would-be vampire hunter from leaving a trail of blood-splattered wooden stakes across Bavaria. But while he thinks he’s saving the world, he is mistakenly murdering sweet, innocent old men. Jennifer Roth, one of the producers of “Black Swan” is on board to produce the film, with a script from Austin, Texas (by way of Washington) based duo Zach Carlson and Bryan Connolly,...

As the Alamo Drafthouse brand has grown, we’ve had the pleasure of bringing some very unique individuals into the programming team. I met Lars Nilsen, for example, when he was working at Kinko’s near campus and soon found that he had a knowledge base of exploitation film that was unparalleled in the city, perhaps the universe. I later got to know former Alamo programming savant Kier-la Janisse at the 2002 Sitges Film Festival. We were both on vacation to absorb their comprehensive retrospective of Spaghetti Westerns (most of which were unfortunately Not subtitled in English). If you travel halfway across the globe for a movie nerd-cation, you’ve accomplished one of the unofficial Alamo programming office job requirements. We’ve been lucky enough to come across a handful of like-minded folks over the years who were so obsessive-compulsive in their love of movies, so rich in obscure knowledge that...

Michael Stephenson was the child star of the 1990 horror pic Troll 2, a movie so infamously bad, he used the experience to write and direct Best Worst Movie, about the film becoming a cult phenomenon. In a twist of fate, that documentary enabled Stephenson, 32, to line up financing for his first narrative feature, a dark comedy titled Destroy, reports Heat Vision. In Destroy, vampires don't exist, but that doesn't stop a well-intentioned would-be vampire hunter from leaving a trail of blood-splattered wooden stakes across Bavaria. But while he thinks he's saving the world, he is mistakenly murdering sweet, innocent old men. Stephenson is directing and producing with Lindsay Stephenson, via the duo's Magic Stone Productions, as well as Jennifer Roth, one of the producers of Black Swan. The script was co-written by Zack Carlson, programmer of Austin's Alamo Drafthouse Cinema.

Directors Guild of America President Taylor Hackford today announced the five nominees for the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for 2010.
“2011 marks the 75th anniversary of the DGA, making the celebration of this year’s five nominees especially meaningful,” said Hackford. “Their inspired films radiate the passion and unique vision of each of these filmmakers, who are about to become part of our Guild’s rich history. My sincerest congratulations to all five nominees.”
The DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film has traditionally been one of the industry’s most accurate barometers for who will win the Best Director Academy Award; only six times since the DGA Awards began in 1948 has the Feature Film winner not gone on to win the corresponding Academy Award.
The winner will be named at the 63rd Annual DGA Awards Dinner on Saturday, January 29, 2011, at the Grand Ballroom of Hollywood & Highland.
