This may be the most unpredictable Emmy race in years, particularly on the drama side. “Stranger Things” and “Veep” lead the Emmy odds according to the prognosticators at Gold Derby, but don’t count out shows like “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Black-ish” and “Atlanta.” At least, that’s the takeaway from a handful of writers, producers and directors who agreed to anonymously share their Emmy ballots with IndieWire.
Not that this year’s picks were easy to make. “I watch a lot of TV,” said one writer. “And yet there is not a single category where I have seen every nominee. Seems impossible to judge — and crazy to think a winner is actually the best, rather than just the best of what most people have seen.”
That’s the high-class problem of Peak TV, and why outlets like HBO and Netflix spend handsomely on For Your Consideration campaigns. That’s...

We’ve got questions, and you’ve (maybe) got answers! With another week of TV gone by, we’re lobbing queries left and right about shows including The Good Wife, Once Upon a Time, Walking Dead, NCIS, S.H.I.E.L.D., Arrow and Scandal!
1 | Did Hawaii Five-0 really deliver a chase scene on surfboards? Did even Point Break attempt such a thing?
2 | Admit it: Did you cry at Jessie‘s “wedding”?

Arrow has cast a new Count Vertigo. TVGuide reports that Peter Stormare has been cast as Werner Zytle, who takes over the Count Vertigo name.
I’ve been trying to wrap my head around the idea of Lifetime’s The Lottery. At least, I’ve been trying to imagine how a drama about a dark future for humanity would work on Lifetime. Here’s the first trailer for the series:
This season, the winner of So You Think You Can Dance will win a role on the Broadway revival of On the Town — provided the show is running when there’s an opening in the cast.
Fringe alum Georgina Haig has been picked to play Elsa in Once Upon a Time‘s Frozen Storyline.
Morning After observes that seeing Tori Spelling‘s Mystery Girls so soon after her raw reality show True Tori finished makes her the real life version of The Combeback.

No surprise here! Whether you’re a Ravens fan or not, seeing the video of Ray Rice dragging his fiancée out of an elevator is still ridiculously shocking.
On Feb. 15, Baltimore Ravens’ running back Ray Rice was filmed dragging his unconscious fiancee, Janay Palmer out of an elevator at a casino in Atlantic City. Reportedly, the couple got in a spat ahead of time, and were both charged with attacking each other. Regardless, fans are really disturbed by the video — and understandably so! In response to yesterday’s Supreme Court ruling, EW contacted Modern Family co-creator Christopher Lloyd who said they are now considering a wedding for Mitchell and Cameron. Lloyd said, “As you can imagine in Cam and Mitchell’s life, they would be feeling that a door has opened that was closed to them. Wouldn’t it be pretty tempting to think about walking through it? We imagine a lot of gay couples today are deciding whether to get married now that it’s open to them. From our standpoint, that’s something to explore.”
That moment of mixed emotions when a historical victory turns into
the realization that you’ll need to find a delicious cake with no lactose, nuts or gluten.
TVLine reports that time is running out for Happy Endings. The cast’s contracts will expire this week and the comedy is running out of potential new homes.

Based on the Robert Goolrick novel, the story is set in 1908 and follows a widower who places a newspaper ad for an "honest, reliable wife".
Instead, he ends up with devious, dishonest women. Semi Chellas and Andy Kevin Walker penned the script.

Can this possibly end well for Phillip Jennings? He’s a Kgb spy who’s fallen in love with both America and his assigned wife (Keri Russell), a fellow undercover spy who still believes in the cause. “It’s a roller coaster watching them figure all that out,” says The Americans’ Matthew Rhys. The fact that they have two kids only complicates matters. “The ever-present threat of something happening to his children comes to the forefront and brings out a softer side to him, but he still has to kick the shit out of people. It’s like every actor’s dream.” Vulture caught up with Rhys, best known for playing Kevin Walker on Brothers & Sisters, to talk about his research for the role and reliving the eighties. What have you learned about these Kgb operatives who lived here as Americans for so long? There were a lot of them here.

New York — It all started with a slap for Matthew Rhys. Trying out for "The Americans," he took one in the puss from Keri Russell.
This new FX drama, whose third episode airs Wednesday at 10 p.m. Est, focuses on two Kgb spies posing as an ordinary American couple shortly after Ronald Reagan became president.
As Philip and Elizabeth Jennings, they have a comfortable home in a Washington suburb, two sweet kids, a travel agency they run and, by all signs, a solid piece of the American Dream. No one would suspect that they are Russian-born plants bent on burying the United States with subterfuge and brutality.
No one, that is, unless it's their new neighbor, FBI agent Stan Beeman (played by Noah Emmerich with an infectious mix of cunning and dorkiness), who has recently moved in with his family across the street. He represents just one among the many threats of exposure,...

Matthew Rhys in FX's The Americans
We watched him for years on Brothers & Sisters, but actor Matthew Rhys has a new role that is worlds apart from his long-running role as gay brother Kevin Walker. In FX’s new spy thriller The Americans, the Welsh actor plays Phillip Jennings, husband to Felicity alum Keri Russell’s Elizabeth and living in 1981 suburbia with their two kids.
What we find out in the pilot episode (airing January 30th), however, is that Phillip and Elizabeth are Soviet Kgb agents who have spent the last fifteen years pretending to be Americans.
To find out more about the new series and, of course, glean some of his thoughts on his B&S past, AfterElton grabbed a few minutes with the uber-friendly (and dreamier-than-ever) Rhys at Fox’s recent Television Critics Association All-Star party.

I think there's a cream for that.
This week's episode gets off to a great start, as Amanda rushes to Bitsy's funeral, but is tormented in the car by a queen bee. I'm not saying the queen bee is a metaphor for what's to come... but it does have a very chipper, high-pitched buzz and venomous stinger.
Fortunately, the bee distracts Amanda long enough for her to lose control of the car and ... see, this is where it gets tricky. I want to say "rear end Eric Winter," but that might come off as crude. And I can't say "plow" or "ass-smack" either. Let's say ... Amanda pings his posterior. That'll work.
Eric Winter has a lot on his resume, but he's best known to us here as Kevin Walker's minister boyfriend on Brothers & Sisters. He's still as insanely hot, and has a Meet-Nude with Amanda, when he gets out...

The results are in! We asked readers to name their favorite TV characters of all time and thousands responded. This year, for the first time, we weren't just asking about favorite gay TV characters. Folks could vote for characters of either gender - and all persuasions. Of course, this being AfterElton we expected gay characters to figure prominently on this list - and they do - but it is interesting to see what female and straight TV roles also resonated with the AfterElton readership.
Before we get to the actual rankings, here are a few statistics.
First, the top fifty came from a broad range of TV shows. Thirty programs were represented, and the two that made the best showing (Glee and Modern Family) placed only four characters each in the rankings.
Second, female characters nabbed 15 of the top 50 spots, or 30%.

We were saddened to hear of the cancellation of ABC's Brothers & Sisters, especially because it appeared there was a good chance it would come back for an abbreviated sixth season.
But it turns out that the Season Five finale was also the series finale for Brothers & Sisters. The show ended on a high note, with a lot of warmth and heart, but it will always be bittersweet because it means it's the last we've seen of Kevin Walker (wonderfully played by Matthew Rhys).
For five seasons Kevin was an integral part of the show's dynamic, and allowed to be as three-dimensional and complex as a any gay character we've ever seen on TV.

When it comes to the television shows that had the biggest impact on AfterElton.com readers in this site's early days, there are two series that truly stand out in terms of Glbt visibility.
The first is Torchwood. The second is Brothers & Sisters, which makes it just that much sadder to announce that according to TVLine.com B&S has just been canceled. While the show was never a ratings juggernaut, it had done well enough this season that there was much speculation that the show would be given an abbreviated sixth and final season.

Brothers and Sisters star Matthew Rhys tells Hannah Booth how a chance encounter in South America led to a part in a very Welsh film
He may be a Hollywood actor starring in a glossy TV drama, but Matthew Rhys is still an ordinary Welsh lad at heart, worrying about the Six Nations. The tournament is not, however, a big concern in Los Angeles, where he has lived for five years. "It's not that they don't get rugby," he says. "It's that they have absolutely no idea it exists."
Rhys, aged 36, has been out west working with Sally Field, Rob Lowe and Calista Flockhart on Brothers and Sisters, which airs here on More4. His portrayal of Kevin Walker, an acerbic, gay California lawyer, is one of the best things about the show – an articulate family drama that occasionally threatens to tip over into sentimental mush. Often, Kevin alone brings it back from the brink.

Which Came First — The Chicken Or The Gay Dad?
Last week Out magazine published the results of their Love and Sex Survey and one of the most notable results was the very large generation gap between gay men on the subjects of gay marriage and having children.
While only 51% of those aged 36 to 45 want to get married, 80% of those 18 to 25 want to do so. The gap is even bigger when it comes to having children. While a whopping 70% of those under the age of 25 want little bundles of joy, only 31% of those over 25 are interested in changing diapers. Even though this is Out's first time doing this survey, I'd wager that even ten years ago, the gap wouldn't have been nearly so large.
Coincidentally — or not — this week saw the debut of USA's Fairly Legal, yet another show which includes an out gay man who is a dad. This comes...

If you've had a chance to play the new video game Fallout: New Vegas, did you also happen to notice that the character of Arcade Gannon was gay?
Arcade Gannon
Don't worry if you didn't as it sounds like quite a few folks — even some gay gamers — didn't tumble onto Gannon's sexuality while playing. And according to Jim Sterling over at FileFront, that's a good thing. Make that a very good thing.
Says Sterling:
This is why Fallout: New Vegas is such a wonderful game in its portrayal of gay characters. In fact, one character in particular has been realized so superbly, that you might not even know he’s gay at all. His name is Arcade Gannon, a member of the Followers of the Apocalypse. You may have had a high enough Speech Skill to recruit him as one of your companions, and you’ll find that he’s...

Scotty's a Cheater? Thanks, ABC! No, Seriously!
Gay fans of Brothers & Sisters are probably breathing a sigh of relief after the last two episodes of the ABC drama. Why? It’s not necessarily because beloved characters Kevin Walker (Matthew Rhys)and Scotty Wandell (Luke Macfarlane) are probably going to avoid an adultery-spurred break-up.
It’s because the rift has finally giving Scotty something to do, and thereby made the characters much more complex and interesting. (Actually, the same could be said of their relationship.)
As Scotty said in last night’s episode, “I’m just as lost and damaged and screwed up as the rest of you. I’m not perfect Kevin, I’m not perfect!”
He might as well have been speaking for fans who’ve been dying for the duo to get past the network television trope of the perfect gay couple.
There have been enough gay characters...

One Year After A Tragic Accident, The Walker Family Reunites, On The Fifth-season Premiere Of ABC’S “Brothers & Sisters”
“The Homecoming” – It’s been a year since the Walker family was torn apart by a tragic car accident, and in a very un-Walker like fashion, everyone has been avoiding everyone else. Truths and reality only start to set in when the family is forced to come together for Justin’s homecoming party: Nora tries to prepare for the party, but is not acting like the mother she used to be; Sarah is consumed with the Narrow Lake deal; Kevin has a new career as public defense attorney; Saul and Scotty are running their restaurant; and Kitty’s life has become a taboo subject for everyone.

HollywoodNews.com: There was a time, and it doesn’t seem like that long ago, that ABC’s “Brothers & Sisters” was my favorite show on the air. I was so enamored with gay lawyer Kevin Walker (Matthew Rhys) and watching his relationship then marriage to Scotty (Luke Macfarlane).
Plus, Scotty is such a hottie!
I love how the show has always treated Kevin and Scotty pretty much like any other couple on the show.
They are, in fact, the most stable couple in the Walker family.
But we don’t see enough of them for my liking as much more screen time has always been given to Justin’s dramas, Nora’s meddling, Sarah’s love life and work headaches, Holly’s business schemes, and Kitty’s problem of the week (cancer, marital woes, sentate race and now widowhood).
And so much drama surrounding Ohai Foods and whatever secrets (mistresses?...

The increasingly complicated lives of the Walker family in Brothers and Sisters receives a few tragic twists, a douse of new hope, and a whole lot of unnecessary drama in its fourth season, resulting in a solid 18 hours of entertainment that will at the very least satisfy returning fans and be easy to stomach for newcomers. The show has never had to work too hard to be accessible as it allows itself to cover so much ground by including every conceivable family member archetype in its ever-growing cast which expands to include a new family member (or two) whenever they realized there’s fertile ground for another person to have been loved/hated/empowered/slighted by the patriarch who started this whole affair three seasons back. The obvious consequence of this is that when a story for which a new character was introduced finally comes to an end, the character...

And According To Me, The Winner Is!
Since every media outlet in existence including American Woodworker, Embalming & Burial and Prison Guard Weekly has already weighed in with their Emmy pics for this Sunday's award show, I thought I'd do something different. Like … take the week off. But the rest of the staff objected to that for some reason.
So instead , since this column is called the Best.Gay.Week.Ever!, I thought it would be fun to look back to the dawn of time and name the gay shows, characters, actors, writers I think most deserving of, well, let's call them the Gay Emmys, or following the lead of Kathy Griffin, the Gemmys!
Here are the categories for which I'll be selecting winners as if these nominees were competing against each other for an Emmy: Best Drama Series, Best Comedy Series, Best Gay Actor Comedy, Best Gay Actor Drama, Best Writing Drama,...

We also bring you more spoilers than ever before, including the dish on a possible kiss that may have led to a recast on The Young and the Restless, why Christian and Olli don their swimsuits on Forbidden Love and the return of Lucas Sanders to Dutch soap Good Times, Bad Times.
Meanwhile, in Gool Newsbeat you’ll find out why openly gay actor Luke Macfarlane traveled to South Africa and learn just how gay True Blood is going to get in its new season.
And as always, I’ve got Snapshots and our Soap Stud Of The Week!
