When Sean Hannity handed off his Fox News program to Laura Ingraham last Thursday night, he had company.
On-air switches between cable-news hosts make for bright moments on Fox News, CNN and MSNBC, with the audiences at home and producers in studio looking at warm exchanges between personalities like Hannity and Ingraham or Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O’Donnell. The chatter between former CNN hosts Chris Cuomo and Don Lemon generated so much attention that producers often let the segment bleed into Lemon’s first segment of the night and even time reserved for commercials. These days, Hannity has begun letting a new crowd bear witness.
Since January of this year, Hannity has been hosting some editions of his regular 9 p.m. program in front of a live, in-studio audience consisting of a few dozen people. On Wednesdays and Thursdays, Fox News viewers can see the crowd as “Hannity” goes to commercial break,...

After Tucker, a deluge of speculation.
Fox News Channel is considering “multiple scenarios” for its primetime lineup after the ouster of Tucker Carlson, with the network declining to comment on a recent report that veteran Sean Hannity might move into its primetime lead-off hour at 8 p.m.
“No decision has been made on a new primetime line-up and there are multiple scenarios under consideration,” Fox News said in a statement Wednesday. Since Carlson was ousted in late April, Fox News has filled his hour with “Fox News Tonight,” an opinion show that relies on a rotating array of hosts. Lawrence Jones, Brian Kilmeade and Kayleigh McEnany are among those who have filled the seat for a week.
Fox News issued the comment in the wake of The Drudge Report posting a plan it said could be underway: moving Sean Hannity to 8 p.m.; switching Jesse Watters, who has fared well at 7 p.

Executives at Fox News Channel believe one of the core elements behind the durability of the network’s late-afternoon panel program, “The Five,” is the connection between founding panelists Dana Perino and Greg Gutfeld. When the pair first met, however, they seemed to find little in common.
Gutfeld, then hosting the wee-hours program “Red Eye,” asked Perino, then a contributor still involved with public relations after her time at the White House, to appear on the show, and approached her outside the Fox Corp. outlet’s Manhattan headquarters. “She pretended there was somebody behind me that she recognized…’Oh, who’s that? Oh, hi, Steve,’” Gutfeld recalls. Perino says she doesn’t fully remember the incident, but “in my defense, I had never been up at 3 a.m. to watch. I didn’t know what I was being asked to do.” Now, she credits Gutfeld with helping her develop a stronger on-air personality.

Celebrated character actor Charles Grodin died Tuesday at the age of 86. The “Heartbreak Kid” star’s multihyphenate career spanned six decades and virtually every medium. However, Grodin did some of his most influential work as himself.
Long before Will Ferrell was interviewed by Jimmy Fallon as Little Debbie or Paul Rudd was trotting out that clip from “Mac and Me” on “Conan,” Grodin was pioneering unpredictable, deadpan humor on the talk show circuit.
Check out some of his most memorable small screen moments.
Getting Banned from SNL…Allegedly
Grodin hosted “Saturday Night Live” in 1977. It was the iconic sketch show’s third season and its first since breakout star Chevy Chase had left to purse a film career. Instead of going right along with the show’s satirical tone, Grodin went left. In contrast to his crochety comic persona, Grodin spent the entire episode as a bumbling innocent, pretending that...

Remember when Fox News Channel launched in 1996 with the slogan “Fair and balanced”? Believe it or not, early on, the channel at least pretended to follow that idealistic goal, providing straight news during the day and balancing conservative voices with liberal ones on primetime opinion shows. Hell, even Sean Hannity shared a show with Alan Colmes, at least giving the impression of equal time.
But it was always a facade, with much of that “balance” more on paper than in reality. Colmes was there, but Hannity usually got the last word. Fox News was Rupert Murdoch’s and Roger Ailes’ attempt to shift the national conversation and muddy the waters of discourse in the nation — and it has been successful beyond their wildest dreams.
Eventually, Fox News dropped the “Fair and balanced” tagline — in a rare moment of acknowledgment that it was a lie — and moved deeper into the realm...

Lawrence O’Donnell has won distinction during his time at MSNBC for the verbal flourishes and deft monologues he brings to the segments of his 10 p.m. program. On Wednesday night, he had to use his powers of speech to ward off some of the scrutiny he has drawn.
The former “West Wing” writer and Congressional aide put MSNBC and its corporate sibling, NBC News, in a tight spot by tantalizing viewers with a tidbit on Tuesday night’s program that he suggested showed corruption at the highest levels of the U.S. government. Sean Hannity is no stranger to crossing the long-held journalistic line about getting too chummy with political candidates, and Fox News has frequently had to pull him back. Last night, Hannity may have spurred new thoughts among executives at the cable-news outlet about the length of his leash.
Hannity and another Fox News Channel opinion host, Jeanine Pirro, both appeared on stage with President Donald Trump Monday night at his final campaign rally in Missouri before Tuesday’s election, a move that in nearly all journalism circles is considered a breach of ethics. Hannity cast aspersions on the journalists covering the event.
Most news organizations actively discourage employees from taking part in political activities, knowing that doing so undermines the ability to provide independent, impartial coverage. The move “feeds into the public perception that Fox isn’t an objective news source,” said Ben Bogardus, an assistant professor of journalism at Quinnipiac University.

Welcome to the February 11, 2015 edition of Outrage Watch, HitFix's daily rundown of all the things folks are peeved about in entertainment. Today's top story? Patricia Arquette slams the media for their "disrespectful" coverage of the unfolding Bruce Jenner story. During an appearance on "The Meredith Viera Show" on Wednesday, the "Boyhood" actor -- whose sister Alexis is transgender -- blasted the media for their handling of Bruce Jenner's reported male-to-female transition: "They should be ashamed because they really are on the unforgivable side of history, and what they are doing is pathetic and immature and repulsive," she told Vieira, adding further: "She is fighting a fight for a lot of kids that are being kicked out of their own homes, society turns their back on these kids. It’s really brutal.” [The Orlando Sentinel] Want more? There's plenty of indignation to go around. See below for a full roundup of today's kerfuffles.

Jesse Ventura has defended those in Hollywood who have been critical of director Clint Eastwood's controversial war drama American Sniper.
The movie, which is about the deadliest sniper in Us military history, has been publicly criticised by Seth Rogen and Michael Moore in recent weeks, igniting a contentious public debate about it.
Ventura, the WWE star-turned-politician who served on the Us Navy's Underwater Demolition Team, has a long history with Chris Kyle, the real-life inspiration for American Sniper.
The pair engaged in a protracted legal battle over Kyle's claims in the media to have punched Ventura in a bar fight, with the court case continuing even after the sniper's murder.
Ventura stepped up his criticism of American Sniper earlier this week, by comparing Kyle's actions as sniper to those of the Nazis during World War II.
The ex-politician told The Alan Colmes Show: "A hero is not how many people you've killed.

When cable news channels don't have enough real news, they often get both partisan and silly. That may explain how MSNBC offended the entire Republican party with a Cheerios comment. It also gives a reason for a Fox News host to declare that "women get paid exactly what they're worth," even if that's less than men.
Cheerios-gate?
The MSNBC vs. Republican semi-scandal began after someone at the news network tweeted about the new Cheerios commercial for the Super Bowl. Colmes Returns To The Factor, Jokes About Couples Counseling, Fights O’Reilly Over Wasteful Spending
Alan Colmes made his return to Bill O'Reilly's show tonight, a full week after O'Reilly shouted at him and called him a liar. This follow-up was a lot less confrontational, and Colmes dryly opened by thanking O'Reilly for going to couples counseling with him. O'Reilly then got more specific with Colmes about particular programs that O'Reilly argued were just plain wasteful...

Sean Hannity got into a shout-fest Monday night with liberal Occidental College professor Caroline Heldman over the economy that was reminiscent of Bill O'Reilly's recent showdown with Alan Colmes. Hannity put forth the notion that Democrats, like MSNBC's Chris Matthews and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, were attempting to put a positive spin on the Obama economy and needed a "reality check."...

It's been nearly a week since Bill O'Reilly shouted down Alan Colmes for "lying" about President Obama's willingness to cut spending, but Monday night the showdown was still the top story on The O'Reilly Factor. O'Reilly continued to explain the confrontation in his Talking Points Memo segment, this time chalking it up to "righteous anger" on his part, all part of a larger plan to draw attention to the issue or spending.

Fox News host Bill O'Reilly flipped out on liberal colleague Alan Colmes on The O'Reilly Factor Tuesday night, and launched eight Mediaite articles, a handful of MSNBC segments, and a drum circle of Fox News navel-gazing. Just when this observer was about to start throwing stuff at his laptop, though, The Ed Show host Ed Schultz pulled the baller move of booking Bill O'Reilly's own body language expert, Tonya Reiman, to dissect his tantrum, and hopefully closing the loop on this angst-fest.

Lawrence O'Donnell tonight reminded viewers of Bill O'Reilly's explosion on his show Tuesday night at Alan Colmes. O'Donnell said this is only the latest example in O'Reilly's long history of anger management issues. O'Donnell opened the segment with the now-infamous clip of O'Reilly going crazy on Inside Edition to argue that O'Reilly has a long history of anger management issues.

Kirsten Powers sat down with Bill O'Reilly tonight clearly prepared to rebut him over allegations he made during his shouting match with Alan Colmes last night over whether or not President Obama has offered any specific spending cuts. Powers had in her hand a document from the White House website showing Obama had proposed specific Medicare cuts, and despite O'Reilly's protestations, she told him, "Bill, you are a hundred percent wrong."...

Fox News' The Five opened its Wednesday afternoon show with a look at last night's epic showdown between Bill O'Reilly and liberal contributor Alan Colmes over whether President Obama has proposed specific entitlement spending cuts. The panel overwhelmingly supported O'Reilly's dramatic presentation, which included repeated shouts of "you are lying," with the exception of special guest Juan Williams, who single-handedly stood up for Colmes.

Lawrence O'Donnell opened his show tonight taking on Bill O'Reilly's short fuse and how it was lit tonight during a heated exchange with Alan Colmes. O'Donnell mocked O'Reilly as being far too busy with things like Oscar parties to pay attention to the news, likening O'Reilly to a member of Congress who reportedly had no idea the Obama administration proposed a "chained Cpi" program for Medicare and Social Security.

Bill O'Reilly brought on Alan Colmes and Monica Crowley to talk about President Obama's seeming reticence to offer any meaningful spending cuts, but most of the segment involved O'Reilly getting into a shouting match with Colmes over Colmes not being able, as O'Reilly viewed it, to provide concrete examples of what Obama wants to cut. O'Reilly repeatedly shouted at Colmes, called him a liar, and declared his claims to be "bull-blank."...

This morning on America's Newsroom, Fox contributors Alan Colmes and Tucker Carlson went head-to-head over the implications of Karl Rove's new Pac aimed at weeding out weaker Gop candidates, a move which many grassroots conservatives have interpreted as being "anti-Tea Party." Carlson argued that it shouldn't be about promoting the "most conservative" candidate that can win, but rather about supporting the candidate who can actually be "articulate" and not come off as endorsing rape when attacking abortion.

Alan Colmes Utterly Perplexed By Ft. Hood Shooter’s Years-Long Gaming Of The Military Justice System
On Monday, a Fox News Channel panel was asked why Nidal Hasan, the Ft. Hood shooter, has been awaiting a military trial for years since his 2009 attack while SSgt. Robert Bales, implicated in the March massacre of Afghani children, will be tried this year. The reasons for the delay in Hasan’s trial stem from his insistence that he grow a beard – some have said that he could appeal a conviction by claiming that his beard prejudiced the jury. Author and Fox News contributor Alan Colmes appeared vexed by the legal wrangling that has followed Hasan’s insistence that he grow a beard. Colmes said that, if Hasan’s religious convictions require that he grow facial hair, this is simply a cost that the military and taxpayers must shoulder.

A new pro-union cartoon from the California Federation of Teachers contains a controversial little nugget that drew the ire of Fox host Martha MacCallum this morning. Ann Coulter continued to defend calling President Obama a "retard" in multiple tweets following the third presidential debate. Appearing on Alan Colmes' show on the Fox News radio network on Oct. 26, Coulter said, "oh screw them," when asked about her critics. "Look, no one would refer to a Down Syndrome child, someone with an actual mental handicap, by saying ‘retard.’" she told Colmes. "Where do you think the words ‘imbecile,’ ‘idiot,’ ‘moron,’ ‘cretin’ come from? These were all technical terms at one time. ‘Retard’ had been used colloquially to just mean ‘loser’ for 30

A panel on Fox News Channel’s America Live with Megyn Kelly debating an interview President Barack Obama gave with CBS News where he said his biggest mistake of his presidency was in not offering Americans a sense of unity and optimism during his presidency. Colmes offered several suggestions for how progressive politicians can better sell their policy recommendations to a skeptical public.

One week after the initial controversy, Fox News finally got around to discussing MSNBC's "WaWa-Gate" edited footage of Mitt Romney and its subsequent fallout. In a panel hosted by Gregg Jarrett, Newsday's Jim Pinkerton and Fox News' in-house liberal Alan Colmes got heated over whether this scandal is indicative of a pro-Obama bias at MSNBC and in the mainstream media in general. In the process, Mediaite got a shout-out for its coverage of the scandal.
