It says a lot about the human condition that we all love “Garfield.” Jim Davis’s nearly 50-year-old comic strip tells the ongoing story of Jon Arbuckle, a lovelorn sad-sack loser, and his snide, pompous, hedonistic cat Garfield. Neither of them are conventional heroes. They rarely even leave their house. Jon symbolizes the misery that stems from seeking external acceptance, while Garfield symbolizes the inner peace that stems from accepting yourself, vices and all. Or maybe it’s just about kicking helpless dogs and eating lasagna. Your mileage might vary.
The point is there’s something about “Garfield” that endures. So they keep cranking him out in every way imaginable and we keep buying it. That comic strip is somehow still running, even though the funny pages are harder and harder to find. The cat’s iconic face has been slapped on clothing, toys, video games, telephones, typing tutorials and...

As anyone familiar with cartoonist Jim Davis’ iconic feline character knows, Garfield doesn’t like to move around very much. He likes to eat, particularly pepperoni pizza and lasagna, and he likes to lie around and make sarcastic comments. In other words, he’s not a cat of action. And yet for some reason, the creators of the new animated film revolving around him think that what the audience really wants is to watch Garfield engage in Mission: Impossible-style, stunt-laden violent mayhem. It’s as if Charlie Brown was starring in the new James Bond movie.
And in case you think I’m stretching things to make a point, The Garfield Movie employs the Mi theme during one scene and features that film series’ Ving Rhames as the voice of a bull who orchestrates the derring-do. After one particularly harrowing sequence, Garfield, voiced by Chris Pratt, comments, “In case you’re wondering,...

When movie fans think of action stars, names like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Donnie Yen, Bruce Willis, and Jason Statham come to mind. However, Prime Video and Kevin Hart are adding another killing machine to the ranks. No, seriously, the new action daredevil is Kevin Hart. What? I’m not joking. Did you watch the Die Hart 2: Die Harter trailer above? You did? Well, then, I don’t know what to tell you. Stranger things have happened.
Exploding onto Prime Video on May 30, Die Hart 2: Die Harter stars Kevin Hart as an idealized and action-ready version of himself. In the Die Hart 2: Die Harter trailer, Hart stages a restaurant terror attack to help pitch his new film. Each year, World War II stories continue to fill streaming libraries. Just last year, two prominent series in the genre were released: A Small Light, the story of a Dutch woman who helped Anne Frank's family, and Transatlantic, an uplifting tale of activists who evacuated refugees from occupied France. We Were the Lucky Ones stands alongside these projects – it's a heartbreaking story of ordinary people in war.
If you don't have time for TV shows, these five movies about love in wartime are just what you need.

What really happened during the 48 hours leading up to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy — at least according to mob bosses — is heading to the big screen in the upcoming film “November 1963: The Killing of a President.”
The mob’s version of events were passed down to Chicago mob boss Sam Giancana’s nephew, Nicholas Celozzi, by Sam’s brother, the late Joseph “Pepe” Giancana, who drove around with his brother Sam during those two days.
“The reason why there’s this fascination or anxiety is because people know that what they’ve heard so far doesn’t make sense,” Celozzi tells Variety of the ongoing interest in the circumstances surrounding JFK’s assassination, even 60 years later. “They keep talking about it because they’re waiting to hear something that makes more common sense.”

There’s a first-look photo from “Presumed Innocent” that’s so evocative you’d assume it was planned. In the image from the Apple TV+ series, which premieres June 12, Jake Gyllenhaal stands in a courtroom looking distraught. His hands are clasped in front of his rumpled shirt, and at first glance, it looks like he’s been handcuffed by the policeman who’s hooking his arm. That’s a solid visual metaphor for a story about a man being prosecuted for murder.
But while it’s the stuff of a publicist’s dreams, the photograph was a happy accident. “I was plunked down on the floor, and it was just the luck of me capturing the stuff that was unfolding around me,” said unit photographer Michael Becker. “Sometimes, you get lucky enough to capture a moment that draws you into what’s going on.”
That’s how it goes in his business.

Having spent years in development limbo as films were announced only to vanish back into the ether, we are finally getting a screen version of William Gibson's iconic cyberpunk tome Neuromancer via a series in the works at Apple TV+. And the show's creative team is plucking an Apple TV veteran to star, as Masters Of The Air's Callum Turner is aboard in the lead role.
Gibson's book, which was first published in 1984, went on to receive a Hugo Award, a Nebula Award, and the Philip K. Dick Award. The novel follows Henry Case (the role Turner is taking), a washed-up hacker hired for one last job by a shady ex-military officer, which brings him in contact with a powerful artificial intelligence.
Gibson crafted two follow-ups, Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive, which means there's material for future seasons if needed, or a potential anthology series. Graham Roland...

Forty years ago, author William Gibson brought the world a cyberpunk novel called Neuromancer – and an adaptation of that story has been trudging its way through development hell pretty much ever since. Versions of a feature film adaptation have passed through the hands of director like music video maker Chris Cunningham, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and The Blob‘s Chuck Russell, Torque‘s Joseph Kahn, Cube‘s Vincenzo Natali, and Deadpool‘s Tim Miller. While these projects were being put together (and while they fell apart), Neuromancer fans always wondered who would end up playing the lead character, Henry Dorsett Case. Hayden Christensen was rumored to be the top contender when Kahn was going to direct (with Liv Tyler rumored to co-star). Liam Neeson and Mark Wahlberg were said to be in the running for Natali’s version, although it wasn’t said who they might be playing.

Famous for writing numerous successful horror, sci-fi and drama novels, Stephen King gave the cinema industry lots of sources for adapting. While some of the adaptations of his works are considered cultish, there are a number of clearly failed attempts to bring the accomplished writer’s plots to the big screen.
These include the adaptation of King’s magnum opus, a series of eight novels, which blends science fiction, fantasy, horror and Western. It was long considered unadaptable, until the 2017 movie was released, which partially proved those lasting doubts.
The movie’s plot revolves around Roland (played by Idris Elba), a gunslinger on his mission to protect the tower which supports all the world’s realities with his young apprentice Jake (Tom Taylor). Meanwhile, his quest gets disturbed by his lifetime rival, named The Man in Black (Matthew McConaughey).

Collective Soul have offered up the lead single “Mother’s Love” from their upcoming double album Here to Eternity (out May 17th).
The track falls on the grungier side of Collective Soul’s musical spectrum. Centered around a thick blues guitar lick, the song also sports the band’s signature pop hooks and big harmonies — an apt choice for a first single, as it provides a complete cross-section of Collective Soul’s long-established style. The recording also touts a notable guest appearance from Paul McCartney guitarist Brian Ray on slide guitar.

Over the past few years, one Hollywood mystery has been how the video game adaptation Borderlands managed to attract such a stacked A-list cast led by Cate Blanchett, given its raunchy, violent nature. At CinemaCon on Wednesday, director Eli Roth said the key to landing Blanchett, whom he said he decided to call on a whim, was not thinking she’d take the role.
“People love seeing you with a conductor stick, and I’m going to throw a flame thrower in her hand,” he recalled telling Blanchett, referencing her acclaimed work in Tár. To his surprise, Blanchett said the apocalyptic feature Escape From New York was among her favorite movies, and she was glad to join the project. From there, the rest fell into place.
Blanchett stars as Lilith, the leader of a crew of outlaws on a mission to retrieve treasure from a vault hidden on the planet.

"Borderlands" is one of the most popular video game franchises of the 2000s. Now, it's becoming a movie, with Lionsgate hoping to turn it into a franchise for the big screen. Directed by Eli Roth, this video game adaptation has been in the works for a long, long time, but it's finally hitting theaters this summer. That being the case, the studio brought some new footage from the film to this year's CinemaCon in Las Vegas, and I was on hand to see what Roth cooked up.
One thing the movie has going for it is a stellar A-list cast led by Cate Blanchett ("Thor: Ragnarok") as Lilith. The ensemble also includes Jack Black ("The Super Mario Bros. Movie"), Kevin Hart ("Lift"), Jamie Lee Curtis ("Halloween"), Ariana Greenblatt ("Barbie"), Florian Munteanu ("Creed II"), and Edgar Ramirez ("Yes Day"). A California Bar Court Judge Yvette Roland ruled that conservative attorney John Eastman, one of the co-conspirators in former President Donald Trump‘s plan to overturn the 2020 election, should be disbarred.
Eastman testified before the State Bar of California in June 2023 in a proceeding aimed to strip him of his license to practice law in the state.
He was one of Trump’s lawyers in 2020 and played a large role in helping him try to overturn the results of that year’s election, which the former president falsely claims was “stolen” by Joe Biden and Democratic officials.
He also devised a plan involving former Vice President Mike Pence invalidating the 2020 results during a joint session of Congress which had convened to count the electoral votes.
For months, a federal grand jury in Washington met in secret and heard testimony from witnesses, including Pence. He allegedly told the jury that he...

In 2009, Stephen King asked his fans what they’d rather get first — a sequel to The Shining or a new Dark Tower book. They voted for Shining sequel, but the Dark Tower book came first anyway. That book? The Wind Through the Keyhole, a (relatively) trim tale that revisits our favorite gunslinger and his ka-tet in between the events of Wizard and Glass and Wolves of the Calla. In it, Roland spins an eerie tale from his youth over a roaring fire as a starkblast rages outside. As far as Dark Tower stories go, it’s a cozy one.
Join The Losers’ Club‘s Randall Colburn, Dan Caffrey, and Dan Pfleegor as they palaver about its nesting story structure, fairy tale detour, and emotional peek at a young gunslinger in the throes of grief. More importantly, was this book the one that best presaged King’s drift towards crime fiction?...

The Real Ghostbusters had only concluded six years before its direct sequel premiered in 1997. And, as with many things geared toward children at the time, there was this trend of overselling the product to bring in both eyes and money. Hence the title of Extreme Ghostbusters (hereinafter referred to as Xgb). The revival never quite lived up to the marketing hype, however, this cartoon was also no lightweight. It proved to be a worthy successor that was neither afraid of no ghost nor afraid to push the envelope in ways its predecessor could not.
After a few blissful years of zero paranormal activity in Xgb, the supernatural has returned in full force to haunt New York City and the rest of America. So who you gonna call to handle this new flux of specters, ghouls and other uncanny creatures? Well, not the Ghostbusters. The original team understandably disbanded after fulfilling their mission.

Ever since his debut in 1954, Godzilla has been referred to in a variety of ways. There's Showa-era Godzilla, Heisei-era, Millennium Godzilla, Sexy Sporty Godzilla, the King of the Monsters, MonsterVerse Godzilla, Big G, and so on. While the character has gone through a number of various comparisons to other species throughout his 70-year screen career, he's generally either referred to as a giant dinosaur or overgrown lizard.
One animal Godzilla has typically not been compared to before is a cat. However, thanks to the directors of "Godzilla Minus One" and the upcoming "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire," that is no longer true. To be fair, one reason this comparison has arrived relatively late in the character's life is because special effects technology has grown exponentially over the past few decades. Where the Showa-era Godzilla was performed by a man inside a suit (that man usually being Haruo Nakajima) and...

William Gibson’s ‘Neuromancer’
Author William Gibson’s award-winning Neuromancer will be adapted into a series at Apple TV+. The streaming service announced Graham Roland (Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan) and Jd Dillard (The Outsider) are creating the series, with Roland attached as showrunner and Dillard directing the pilot episode.
“We’re incredibly excited to be bringing this iconic property to Apple TV+,” stated creators and executive producers Roland and Dillard. “Since we became friends nearly 10 years ago, we’ve looked for something to team up on, so this collaboration marks a dream come true. Neuromancer has inspired so much of the science fiction that’s come after it, and we’re looking forward to bringing television audiences into Gibson’s definitive ‘cyberpunk’ world.”
The 10-episode drama will be executive produced by author William Gibson, Zack Hayden, Anonymous Content, and Skydance Television’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Matt Thunell.

Last week, the trailer for director Eli Roth’s long-awaited video game adaptation Borderlands, which is set to reach theatres on August 9th, made its way online – and while talking to Entertainment Weekly about the trailer, Roth revealed that he’s currently writing a horror script with 16-year-old Borderlands cast member Ariana Greenblatt, who plays Tiny Tina in the upcoming movie!
Roth told Entertainment Weekly that Greenblatt “loves horror, and we have a great idea, so we’re writing a movie together. That is an exclusive, nobody knows that. The first trailer for Eli Roth's "Borderlands" has drawn mixed responses from fans of the original video games. Some are unhappy with the casting choices for characters, like comedian Kevin Hart as tough guy Roland and Cate Blanchett as Lilith, a character who was in her 20s in the first "Borderlands" game. And then there are the characters who didn't get cast at all.
Lilith and Roland were two of the four playable characters in Gearbox Software's original chaotic shooter-looter, which allowed up to four players to team up and take on the hostile planet of Pandora in the search for a legendary Vault. Lilith has the advantage of strange powers that allow her to become temporarily invisible, while Roland is highly effective with heavy guns and has an automatic turret for backup. But missing from the trailer for "Borderlands" -- and apparently from the whole movie, unless...

The Borderlands video game franchise has been a smash success since its debut back in 2009.
And now, the saga of the magical Siren Lilith and her quest for galactic wealth is making its way to the big screen.
The film, directed by Hostel and Cabin Fever auteur Eli Roth, won't premiere until August 9, but we have a good sense of the vibe thanks to a trailer released by Lionsgate today.
Fresh off her acclaimed performance in Tár, Cate Blanchett plays a very different kind of stoic badass in her first foray into the world of video game adaptations.
As Lilith, Blanchett heads up a band of interplanetary misfits determined to retrieve a massive treasure from a “dumpster fire of a world.”
The crew includes Kevin Hart as a soldier named Roland and Jamie Lee Curtis as the eccentric researcher Tannis.
Ariana Greenblatt, Florian Munteanu, Haley Bennett, and Edgar Ramirez round out the cast.

Cate Blanchett’s Lilith travels to a planet she hates to find a massive treasure hidden in a vault in the first trailer for Lionsgate’s Borderlands. Lilith can’t do the treasure hunt alone and is forced to team up with an odd assortment of people on a planet that has an actual gully made of piss.
The trailer gives off Guardians of the Galaxy vibes, and the film obviously doesn’t take itself too seriously.
Eli Roth and Joe Crombie wrote the screenplay, based on the popular Borderlands video game franchise, with Roth directing. The action thriller stars Cate Blanchett as Lilith, Kevin Hart as Roland, Jack Black as Claptrap, Ariana Gleenblatt as Tiny Tina, Florian Munteanu as Krieg, Edgar Ramirez as Atlas, and Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis.
Ari Arad, Avi Arad, and Erik Feig serve as producers, with Tim Miller, Ethan Smith, Louise Rosner, Emmy Yu,...
