The only person who knows for certain what happens to Detective Navarro at the end of HBO’s True Detective: Night Country is Kali Reis herself.
“I have my own interpretation for Navarro, but I have not shared that with a soul,” Reis shared during the Deadline TV Contenders panel for the series.
Reis was joined by her co-star Jodie Foster, as well as showrunner Issa López, to discuss Night Country. While the ending may seem quite ambiguous, López assured that there is “an answer,” if audiences look close enough.
“I think that if you look very carefully, very carefully at the show and follow the lines very carefully, there’s an answer to what we saw at the end,” she told the audience. “But again, there’s a space for where your heart wants to live…and what you need to get out of it.”

Kirsten Dunst, who is the mother of Ennis, five, and two-year-old James, has been in Hollywood for more than three decades but said that being a mother has made her a better actress.
The actress told US TV show ‘Extra’: “My child turned one on this film, so I really felt like I was really in it still. They make me better at what I do, for sure. I think once you become a mom, you’re just more fearless in life.”
The ‘Jumanji’ star, who plays a renowned war photojournalist in the new drama film ‘Civil War’, was then asked if she thinks her world perspective changed after working on her latest project and said that she just naturally has “anxieties” about the world in its current state, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

[Editor’s note: The following article contains spoilers for “True Detective: Night Country,” including its finale.]
It’s Raymond Clark (Owen McDonnell), the heartbroken killer of “True Detective: Night Country,” who gets the famous line from the series (and its beloved first season): “Time is a flat circle.”
He’s talking about a lot of things — most explicitly, the spirit of Annie K. (Nivi Pederson) that he believes lives in the ice caves around them — but he’s also talking about “True Detective” and the very nature of episodic storytelling itself. Stories are told and retold and repackaged and remixed, genres interwoven, resolutions reached.
And “True Detective: Night Country” did a damn good job with all of that.
Following now-deleted comments from series creator Nic Pizzolatto on social media, audiences learned early on that not only did Pizzolatto not actually have a hand in the creation of the fourth season of the HBO series, but he didn’t...

Fans of True Detective Season 1 must remember Matthew McConaughey’s character, Rust Cohle, saying “time is a flat circle” in a memorable scene. Series creator Nic Pizzolatto wrote those lines, but he wasn’t involved in writing True Detective: Night Country.
A still from True Detective: Night Country (2024)
Despite being credited as an executive producer, Pizzolatto made it clear on social media that he had no part in season 4’s writing. True Detective Season 4 is the only season which is not created by him—who wrote every episode of the first three seasons.
This season, titled Night Country, is helmed by Issa López. She took on the role of director and co-writer for all six episodes of the new season. Now, the director of True Detective Season 4 disclosed the true motivation behind McConaughey’s memorable dialogue. This revelation came after the original writer (Pizzolatto) criticized her publicly.

The fourth season of "True Detective," titled "Night Country," brings back the surreal, labyrinthine mystique of the series' unforgettable first season, to the point that it feels like a direct sequel to season 1. Set in the fictional mining town of Ennis in Alaska, "Night Country" embraces the cold darkness of its locale, which looms ominously over the mysterious events that grip the small town, including a baffling disappearance case that might be connected to a murder. Amid secrets buried within the ice and an avalanche of eerily interconnected events, Chief Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Trooper Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) must put their differences aside to get to the bottom of these linked cases.
While only three episodes of "Night Country" are available so far, as the show premieres new episodes every week, the series has already proven itself to be complex and densely layered, with nuanced, flawed characters at its center.

Does Ennis have an exorcist handy? Because by the look of things, there may be a supernatural perp that Danvers is unknowingly setting up a meeting with. And I highly doubt that “she” will have the patience for a procedural interrogation. The frozen landscape of the fictional Alaskan backwoods doesn’t just preserve whatever dies in the ice but nurtures a curse that’s starting to take on a much more vicious shape.

Anyone paying any attention to the "True Detective: Night Country" discourse will surely have noticed a rift forming among viewers. Specifically, there are those who can't stop comparing the new episodes to the original 2014 season, and those who say "Night Country" should be viewed as its own thing, entirely divorced from what came before. However you feel about it, new showrunner Issa López, who replaces show creator Nic Pizzolatto, has not only been open about how influenced she was by Pizzolatto's inaugural season, but has peppered "Night Country" with homages, callbacks, and outright continuations of themes and specific narrative threads from the 2014 episodes — to the extent that "Night Country" is essentially a stealth sequel to season 1.
Thus far, the biggest link to the initial season has been the inclusion of the spiral symbol, which cropped up throughout the "Night Country" trailer. This motif appeared throughout season 1 and represented the...

Spoiler Alert: This article discusses plot points from Episode 3 of HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country,” titled “Part 3,” now streaming on Max.
In the second episode of “True Detective: Night Country,” Rose (Fiona Shaw), the Ennis resident who led the police to the corpsicle of scientists, warns Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) about getting involved with the investigation. Drawn to the case and determined to connect it with a six-year-old cold case, the death of Indigenous midwife and activist Annie Kowtok, Navarro has thrust herself headfirst into the inquest, even teaming back up with her arch nemesis, Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster), Ennis’ chief of police.

Finn Bennett and Jodie Foster in ‘True Detective: Night Country’ episode 2 (Photo by Michele K. Short/HBO)
HBO’s True Detective: Night Country, season four of the award-winning anthology, began with the mind-blowing discovery that an entire research team just up and vanished, leaving food on counters and a DVD playing back at the Tsalal Arctic Research Station in Ennis, Alaska. Episode one introduced Academy Award-winner Jodie Foster as Ennis Police Chief Liz Danvers and Kali Reis as Alaska Trooper Evangeline Navarro, who will be – reluctantly – teaming up to figure out what happened to the researchers, a disappearance that Navarro believes is connected to the cold case of a local activist and midwife who was brutally murdered six years ago.
Episode two kicks off with Liz and Officer Peter Prior (Finn Bennett) examining the researchers’ frozen bodies, which were discovered outside of town at the end of the season premiere.

It’s surreal already; the fan-favorite crime thriller is awaking from its deep slumber of 5 years for an icy 4th installment. We know from Fargo that a crime thriller doesn’t have to hesitate before taking a plunge into the darkness of the inexplicable. Issa Lopez digs up something ancient and sinister from the frozen heart of Ennis and sets the season apart in the process. There are deaths aplenty, and the twinkling Christmas lights do nothing to battle the avalanche of darkness about to engulf the cursed mining town.

"True Detective: Night Country" is starting to look more and more like a horror show. Two episodes into the season's six-part run, things in Ennis, Alaska just keep getting stranger. The severed tongue of Indigenous activist Anne appeared on a research facility's floor six years after she died. The scientists at said research facility (who remind us a lot of horror classic "The Thing") ended up dead in the snow, naked and frozen with ruptured eardrums and scratched-out eyes. At least two characters have heard a voice whisper "She's awake" in their minds, and a little girl is drawing pictures of a local folk figure — a woman in the snow with bloody, dripping hands. On top of all that, the ghost of Rust Cohle's dad may or may not be out in the wilderness, possibly worshipping the sky.

The first time we glimpse the spiral in the first season of "True Detective" is when Detective Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) inspects Dora Lange's corpse, which is propped up in a ritualistic manner. This is not the only time the spiral appears — we see it as a tattoo and as a part of Cohle's vision/hallucination of the shape made up by a flock of birds above an abandoned church. A primary reason why season 1 of the series is so rewatchable can be attributed to its open-ended intrigue, much like a spiral, that does not consume itself like an ouroboros. While there are countless ways to interpret what the spiral truly means, as it is established as a symbol for the depraved Tuttle cult, its symbolism remains one that evokes cyclical loops and inevitability.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “True Detective” Season 4, Episode 2, “Part 2” — the second hour of “Night Country.”]
What do we know about Raymond Clark? We know he’s a scientist at the Tsalal Research Base in Ennis, Alaska. We know, thanks to his online bio shown last week, that he studies paleomicrobiology with a focus on “understanding the molecular basis of colonization and infection by Staphylococcus aureus.” We know he was the only person with his own room at the research facility, and we know that he was wearing the late Annie K’s parka in a photograph taken at that base. We know he wore it when he had what appeared to be a seizure, then turned to his colleague in the kitchen and said, “She’s awake.”
Now, after Episode 2, we know that he was in a relationship with Annie K. He rented a trailer to keep their relationship a secret, and that trailer...

If you are a comic book reader who has a long flight coming up, writer Jimmy Palmiotti has one humble suggestion. He is offering hundreds of pages’ worth of his comics at a steep discount as part of a sale that see proceeds go to the World Wildlife Fund.
“It can get you from Japan and back from the east coast,” Palmiotti says with a laugh of the hefty reading material, available via the service Humble Bundle, which allows buyers to adjust how much of the proceeds to go charity and how much go to creators like Palmiotti.
Among them is Random Acts of Violence, which Jay Baruchel adapted as a feature in 2019. Another book in the batch was also in development as a movie: the crime drama Back to Brooklyn.

Early in True Detective: Night Country, we are told that it is December 17, aka the date of the last sunset of the year in the remote northern town of Ennis, Alaska. For a stretch each winter this close to the top of the world, the darkness is inescapable, making it impossible to differentiate day from night without a watch or other device that tells you whether it’s a.m.

Premiering almost exactly 10 years after the launch of the first season and almost exactly five years after the Mahershala Ali-centric third season — time being a flat circle, as the now-punchline goes — True Detective: Night Country is perched precariously in conversation with, and in contrast to, the show created by and steered by Nic Pizzolatto.
Created by Issa López, who wrote or co-wrote most of the season and directed all six episodes, Night Country is, in some ways, a throwback to the first season, bringing back the uncomfortable intersection of true crime narrative and supernatural undertones. The season also includes direct nods to imagery and dialogue from the first season — generally unnecessary citations that feel like a sop to the Pizzolatto-worshipping corner of the fandom, since otherwise Night Country is at odds with the previous seasons in terms of theme and overall perspective.

Comicbook writer Garth Ennis, best known for series such as “Preacher” and “The Boys,” and his nine-year stint at Marvel, is a guest of this week’s Lucca Comics & Games. Ennis, whose current work includes comedy Barbarian strip “Babs,” and the latest instalments of the “Battle Action” and “Punisher” series, spoke about his new book “Partisan,” as well as diverse topics including religion and war.
“[In ‘Partisan’], Steve [Epting] and I explored a similar territory to that of ‘Sara.’ It’s about a woman who finds herself caught in the fighting between Russian partisans and the German invaders in Ukraine from 1942 onwards,” Ennis said.
“Our heroine, with her husband having been called up by the army, finds herself raising two kids alone. Caught in this conflict, she joins the partisans for no other reason than keeping her kids alive. She finds herself doing the most extreme things, purely in the interest of her family.

With a show as inconsistent as Fear the Walking Dead, you never know what you'll get.
Fear the Walking Dead Season 8 Episode 8 was another middle-of-the-road installment, but it did feature reunions, callbacks, and a shocking death that should usher in the final episodes of the series.
Since Charlie's arrival on Fear the Walking Dead Season 4, she's been one of the most polarizing figures in franchise history.
That's what you get when you kill someone as pure as Nick Clark and live to tell the tale.
There was an element of ambiguity surrounding Charlie's fate since the end of Fear the Walking Dead Season 7 because, with such a severe case of radiation, she stood to die soon after the events at Strand's tower.
Many believed she was dead, including Daniel, who stepped in to become a father figure to her in her time of need.

A new, darker era is just around the corner for Bond, James Bond. Dynamite Entertainment has announced that a brand new "James Bond" comic book series is set to hit shelves early next year, with none other than Garth Ennis writing the upcoming adventures for 007. Ennis, known for his work on "The Boys" and "Preacher," promises to bring a darker edge to the character more closely associated with author Ian Fleming's literary creation.
"When I took a look at the Bond of the Fleming novels, as opposed to the larger-than-life figure from the movies, I saw a great deal more potential — a much darker character in a more interesting world," Ennis said in a press release. 2023 marks the 70th anniversary of Bond, with the character first appearing in Fleming's "Casino Royale" in 1953. This announcement was made as part of the celebration. As for what Ennis has in store for Bond?...

Former legendary player Jimmy Connors explained how and why Carlos Alcaraz matters to the Atp Tour and its tennis product.
Sports are fun and exciting and great and all of that jazz; however, they are mostly a business. Everything that is done in sports is mostly made to make the business bigger and better. That allows bigger profits, which is what keeps the world spinning.
Players and athletes are in the middle of it, yet their interests are not always represented. We can see it right now with tennis balls discourse where the Tour faces more and more players speaking up against a change they didn't want .
What made the sport so popular over the past few decades was its 'sellers' aka. players who drew interesting. Legends like Federer, Nadal and Djokovic playing at the same time was an amazing happenstance for the Atp Tour but as they slowly fade out of the sport,...

Michelle Williams is an actor that has earned acclaim for her fearlessness and talent. She’s tackled a wide variety of roles that call for her to dig deep within herself, accessing tough emotions and displaying them onscreen.
Still, Williams is nothing if not generous, and she often looks for opportunities to praise her co-stars over herself.

I saw it unfold right in front of my eyes, from rehearsal all the way to filming.”
Lee continued, “Michelle Williams broke her knee during pre-shooting, but Heath was always looking after her. He was so naturally caring towards Michelle. When it came to Jake, Heath had a very different attitude towards their work. Sometimes there was friction — not quarreling,...
