As the news gets darker and more depressing, a triumphant “against the odds” inspired by true events underdog story may be just the cure for the late Winter doldrums. And that’s exactly what this week’s new movie promises…and pretty much delivers. It’s an ode to the “help your neighbor” spirit of small-town America (not that it’s completely absent in the bustling cities). Plus there’s a bit of spirituality (right in the title) along with some folks overcoming their own personal struggles. And as a bonus, this marks a most welcome return of an actress to the big screen, in a wide release, after earning a second Oscar almost twenty years ago. In a new “real-life” role this extraordinary actress becomes the leader of a group of Ordinary Angels.

Driven by their devout Christianity, the Erwin brothers — Andrew and Jon — have never been shy about the agenda behind their work. “Our mission,” it says on their website, “is simply to spread the Gospel further than it’s ever been using film as the medium,” and that mission has seen their Kingdom Story Company evolve into one of the biggest forces in America’s burgeoning “faith-based” sub-genre.
In light of the brothers’ stated purpose, however, it’s strange that they’ve responded to their success by making increasingly secular movies. Perhaps that’s just part of the Erwins’ plan to widen the tent and share Jesus’ light with people who haven’t necessarily sought it out for themselves, but it’s hard to overstate the difference between their self-directed 2012 debut — the virulently anti-abortion drama “October Baby” — and the latest feature they’ve produced, a hokey but harmless Hilary Swank vehicle...

Review: When I first saw the trailer for Ordinary Angels, I wrote it off without a second thought as another faith-based drama designed to tug at the heartstrings and reinforce the unlimited power of God. In recent years, there has been a surge in movies like this; few have risen above the minimal viable bar for them to be considered watchable by mainstream audiences. To my surprise, the film is not an overt case for Christ,...

With a true story centered on everyday people pulling off extraordinary feats, “Ordinary Angels” can’t help but embrace the sentimentality at its core. It’s baked into its DNA, and is the reason why this compelling, heartstring-pulling drama made it to the big screen 30 years after taking place — in a time when we too are searching for light in a bleak world. Yet what lifts the picture beyond average inspirational fluff is the way director Jon Gunn and company control the slow release of its sweetness so as not to overpower. This technique, though forgivably manipulative, works to grand effect and, by the end, even cynics will be won over by the human kindness on display.

‘Ordinary Angels’ Review: Hilary Swank’s Passionate Performance Drives True Faith Based Family Drama
Lionsgate’s collaboration with faith based movie producers Kingdom Story Company has reaped boxoffice rewards for both, and with their latest, Ordinary Angels, the inspiring true story of a small Kentucky town that comes together in a historic snowstorm in order to transport a 3-year-old girl to an Omaha hospital for a life-saving liver transplant, they have another surefire heartfelt film tailor-made for audiences looking for a little uplift. This actually would have made a perfect Christmas season release but has been delayed for several months, now opening in the same February corridor where Kingdom’s surprise hit, Jesus Revolution did well last year. Midwest crowds will especially respond to a never-say-never tale that is about bringing people together, not tearing them apart in this age of division.

Originally published in 1986, Elvis and Me: The True Story of the Love Between Priscilla Presley and the King of Rock n’ Roll, proved popular enough to warrant being made into a four-hour television movie in 1988. Now, thirty-five years later, Sofia Coppola has written and directed a new adaptation – simply titled Priscilla – that not only breathes new life into Presley’s memoir, but also further solidifies Coppola as a director deserving of comparison to her more heralded father.
The film begins as a teenage Priscilla Beaulieu is introduced to Elvis Presley at a military-hosted party in Germany. From that moment, the couple enjoy a long courtship that culminates in a tempestuous marriage resulting in the birth of Lisa Marie Presley (Raine Monroe Boland/Emily Mitchell) and the couple’s ultimate separation.

Elvis Presley‘s only wife, Prisiclla Presley, shared her heart-tugging account of life with Elvis Presley in her book Elvis and Me. Director Sofia Coppola took Prisiclla’s story and turned it into a feature film, Priscilla, detailing what went on behind the closed doors of Graceland Mansion. Priscilla says about life with the king of rock and roll, “It’s a long story.”

"She just got me and I trusted her." A24 has debuted a new behind-the-scenes featurette for Sofia Coppola's Priscilla, her superb film about Priscilla and Elvis Presley. This premiered at the 2023 Venice Film Festival last month, winning the key Best Actress prize for star Cailee Spaeny. Through Priscilla's eyes, Sofia Coppola tells the unseen side of a great American myth in Elvis and Priscilla's long courtship and turbulent marriage, from a German army base to his dream-world estate at Graceland, in this deeply felt & ravishingly detailed portrait of love, fantasy, and fame. Cailee Spaeny stars as Priscilla, with Jacob Elordi as Elvis Presley, and an ensemble cast including Raine Monroe Boland, Dagmara Domińczyk, Emily Mitchell, Jorja Cadence, Rodrigo Fernandez-Stoll, and Luke Humphrey. One of the better films arriving this fall - it comes highly recommended. The main official trailer premiered a few weeks ago, and the film opens in early November.

Sure, it’s not easy being a king, but have you tried being married to one? After teasing it earlier this year, A24 has shared the first full-length trailer for Priscilla, Sofia Coppola’s upcoming biopic based on Mrs. Presley’s 1985 memoir Elvis and Me.
American high schooler Priscilla Beaulieu (Cailee Spaeny) is still adjusting to her family’s relocation to Germany when — in a moment almost too good to be true — she meets one Elvis Presley (Jacob Elordi) at a party. It doesn’t take much for the world’s hottest star to become smitten, much to the (understandable!) chagrin of Priscilla’s parents: “Just what is the intent here, Mr. Presley?” her father asks. “Why my daughter?”
Elvis justifies pursuing a girl ten years his junior because “she’s much more mature than her age,” a remark that usually doesn’t come from the most well-meaning men. But...

Exclusive: The Kingdom Studios and Lionsgate drama Ordinary Angels starring 2x Oscar winner Hilary Swank is departing from its Oct. 13 theatrical release date as AMC’s Taylor Swift: The New Eras Tour looks to open to at least $70M off a female-heavy audience.
Universal’s The Exorcist: The Believer seeing the crazy amount of presales at $37M+ yesterday opted to go a week earlier on Oct. 6, which is much richer release date where Joker, and Venom have launched.
No bother for Ordinary Angels which is Tbd in regards to its release date. "I have to make it! This is our last chance. If we don't take it, Michelle dies!" Lionsgate has debuted a new trailer for Ordinary Angels, a religious drama based on a real medical emergency and struggling family. Arriving in theaters nationwide starting this October, sticking with this date despite the ongoing strikes in Hollywood. Inspired by the true story of a hairdresser who single-handedly rallies an entire community to help a widowed father save the life of his critically ill daughter who desperately needs a liver transplant. "Faith can make the impossible possible," is the tagline. This is leaning heavy on the religious side of the story, which means they will get the attention of many faithful Americans. The movie stars Hilary Swank as Sharon Steves, with Alan Ritchson, Nancy Travis, Tamala Jones, & Amy Acker, plus Skywalker Hughes and Emily Mitchell as the kids. This is as cheesy as they come!

A24 just released the first trailer for Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla, a film chronicling the life and love story of how a young Priscilla Beaulieu became Mrs. Presley. Based on her 1985 book Elvis and Me, the biopic is slated to hit theaters this October.
Cailee Spaeny stars as Priscilla alongside Jacob Elordi’s Elvis. The clip opens with Spaeny steadily getting dolled up in the winged eyeliner, faux lashes, and big hair Presley was known for, before revealing she’s getting dressed for her wedding day. "Faith can make the impossible possible," is the tagline (ugh - well they definitely know their audience). The movie stars Hilary Swank as Sharon Steves, with Alan Ritchson, Nancy Travis, Tamala Jones, and Amy Acker, plus Skywalker Hughes and Emily Mitchell as the kids. This looks as schmaltzy and cliche as any movie can, with all...

Sarah Polley won her first Oscar for her Women Talking.
“First of all, just want to thank the Academy for not being mortally offended by the words women and talking with so close together like that,” she said as her film won the award for Writing (Adapted Screenplay).
“Miriam Toews wrote an essential novel about a radical democracy in which people who don’t agree on every single issue managed to sit together in a room and carve out a way forward together free of violence. They do so not just by talking but also by listening,” she added.

Content warning: This article contains references to widespread sexual assault depicted in the film "Women Talking."
Do nothing. Stay and fight. Or leave. Those are the three choices the women of "Women Talking" are faced with. Based on a true story, the new film by writer and director Sarah Polley tells the story of women in a fictional Mennonite colony who learn that some of the men in the community have been secretly drugging them and assaulting them during the night for years. When a woman would wake up confused, in pain, or bleeding, the men would tell them they'd been attacked by devils or demons. At the beginning of the movie, the women finally learn the truth. Police arrest the eight men responsible, and when almost all the colony's men head to town to bail them out, the women have to decide what to do, leaving them with the three choices.

Sarah Polley’s Women Talking features a large ensemble of accomplished and award-winning actresses, so it would not have been a surprise to see one (or several) take the stage Thursday at the Palm Springs Film Awards, where Polley was honored with a director of the year prize.
But instead it was Eric Idle, the Monty Python star, who presented Polley with her award. His appearance was especially profound for Polley as it provided a public reunion for the two co-stars from Terry Gilliam’s The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. “About 34 years ago, I was on the set of a movie in Rome and I said farewell to a little girl of 8 who starred in the movie,” Idle said. “We had all been scarred on this movie … going on nine months before we’d been able to escape.” Idle called some of the scenes “life-threatening.”

Growing up in Winnipeg, Manitoba, costume designer Quita Alfred felt a connection to the nearby Mennonite community. When she spoke with director Sarah Polley about working on her new film, “Women Talking,” Alfred describes the moment as “rather serendipitous.”
Adapted from Miriam Toews’ novel, “Women Talking” was inspired by a true story.
Alfred recalls telling Polley, “I’m in the heart of Mennonite [community] in North America, and if I can get a jump on this before we start prep, I’m likely to be able to find almost everything that we need.”
Alfred started by meeting with Marianne Hildebrand, a well-connected, though less traditional, member of the Mennonite community in nearby Winkler. There, in the heart of Mennonite country, Alfred was able to purchase fabrics and accessories directly from local businesses. “We always joke in the movies, ‘Oh, I’ll just run to the pirate shop for you!’” she laughs.

Warning: The following contains references to sexual assault.
Following a strong run on the film festival circuit, Sarah Polley's drama "Women Talking" is getting a theatrical release by United Artists Releasing. This is a difficult story: It's an account of victimized women within an insular community trying to take back their power, despite being at a significant — and purposeful — disadvantage. Only men are allowed to receive an education and take leadership roles within this settlement, and as a direct result of the systemic sexism running rampant through the population, the core values of their faith have been corrupted. Men have been violently sexually assaulting the women and children, and if nothing is done, this behavior will certainly continue.
"Women Talking" is what the title implies: a story centered around women talking about their situation and trying to plan their next move. The film is an adaptation of Miriam Toews' novel of the same name,...
