The first-ever Gotham TV Awards offered a stark contrast between the Gotham Film & Media Institute’s annual celebration of cinema. While both awards shows were founded to toast independent productions — that is, before the Gotham Awards increased their budget cap eligibility requirements in 2023 — the Gotham TV Awards felt like a strangely intimate gathering that was mostly populated by showrunners, network executives, and the Gotham TV Awards jurors, with a few actors and press sprinkled in.
Sure, it could be that it’s the first year for the awards show and thus a smaller turnout and even venue. Or perhaps the Gotham TV Awards will remain a coveted industry event, one that feels like it’s only for insiders.
The intimacy was most prominent during the Anniversary Tribute for “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” icon Mariska Hargitay. The award was presented by Hargitay’s former co-star Stephanie March, and...

Exclusive: The End of the F***ing World producer Clerkenwell Films and Envision Entertainment are co-creating a six-part drama series about a working-class teenage girl sent to an elite finishing school.
Swans is now in development as female-led show set in the so-called ‘Swinging ’60s.’ It will include “a rich seam of humour, scandals and singular characters, touching on social themes of class and women’s rights” and “a cast of international characters” that represent the diversity of British life in the 1960s, according to the producers.
The show is from rising writer Amy Mason, and follows 19-year-old working-class east London girl Ally, who joins a posh finishing school when her street trader dad wins the football pools.
The story was inspired by the real life experiences of Mason’s mother and aunt, who both attended a finishing school just as society was changing for women. It marks Mason’s first TV screenwriting project.

Julie Walters (National Treasure) and Clarke Peters (The Wire) are fronting a dark, irreverent drama based around a death pact for broadcaster Channel 4.
They will star in Clerkenwell Films’ six-part Truelove, which is written by from Iain Weatherby (Humans) and co-created with Charlie Covell. She wrote the tonally similar Channel 4 and Netflix drama The End Of The F***ing World — another Clerkenwell production.
With a core cast in their 60s and 70s, Channel 4 says the series “breaks the rules for older characters on screen and flips ageist tropes on their head in a series which promises thrilling twists and turns, irreverent humour and passionate romance.”
Walter will play Phil, an ex-senior police chief enjoying a comfortable if boring retirement, and Peters plays Ken, a divorcee and ex-special forces vet who feels similarly at sea. The pair are childhood sweetheart who never quite managed to forget each other.

The Duchess, the comedy from British-based comedian Katherine Ryan, has been cancelled by Netflix after one season.
The six-part series launched in September 2020 but will not return. It is centered around the powerful and problematic choices of a fashionably disruptive single mom living in London. Her daughter, Olive, is her greatest love so she debates a second child with her greatest enemy — Olive’s dad.
Ryan revealed the news on Vicky Pattison’s The Secret To… podcast. “[Netflix] didn’t want to make any more, not enough people watched it. I think something like 10 million people watched it in 28 days and that wasn’t enough,” she said. “But also, I’m not terribly sad about it. I feel like it’s a whole lot of work, a whole lot of time to make a sitcom. I was so grateful to able to make it, but I think it speaks for itself.

Ferguson will continue as chief executive to oversee the transition before stepping down this fall, when long-standing executive producer Petra Fried and head of production and finance Wim de Greef will jointly lead the company.
Clerkenwell is currently developing several new shows for U.K. and international audiences including “Baby Reindeer” for Netflix and “The Birth of Daniel F Harris” for Channel 4.

It’s the end of an era at The End Of The F***ing World and Misfits producer Clerkenwell Films, where founder and CEO Murray Ferguson is leaving after 23 years and BBC Studios is taking full control of the business.
Ferguson founded the UK production outfit in 1998, but will step away in the fall to try his hand at “new things.” As part of his departure, BBC Studios will increase its investment in Clerkenwell to 100%, having previously owned 48% of the company. BBC Studios first invested in Clerkenwell in 2008.
Channel 4/Netflix’s BAFTA-winning hit The End Of The F***ing World has become Clerkenwell’s calling card in recent years, but it boasts other successful youth-skewing titles including Misfits and Lovesick. More traditional drama credits extend to Afterlife and Rebus.

Channel 4 has commissioned its latest series from Clerkenwell Films, the producer behind its BAFTA-winning Netflix co-production The End Of The F***ing World.
Like Clerkenwell did with End Of The F***ing World’s Charlie Covell, the company is teaming with a relatively new writer, Pete Jackson (One Normal Night), to create gripping eight-part drama The Birth Of Daniel F Harris.
Here’s the premise: Danny was a baby when his mother was killed in a car crash. Overcome with grief, his father locked him away in a house, telling him the outside world is full of monsters that will spirit him away like his mother.
But when Danny turns 18 his whole world explodes in an instant and he has to come to terms with a new world he never knew existed. He also finds the real monster — the one that killed his mom.
