Last weekend, Jason Reitman's Men, Women & Children opened in wide release to poor reviews and lackluster ticket sales. In fact, after earning only $306, 367 on its opening weekend, the film now holds the distinction of being the fifth-worst opening movie from 1982 to the present, according to Box Office Mojo. It's an unfortunate turn for Reitman, a talented director who seems to be in a bit of a rut (see also: his previous film, Labor Day). But what about the four indie flicks that performed even worse than Men, Women & Children—did they get what was coming to them, or were...

Huck Botko's Bad Johnson is probably the most thoughtful movie possible about a penis that takes human form.
Blaming his genitals after yet another relationship is ruined by his inability to say no to the women who keep throwing themselves at him, hunky personal trainer Rich Johnson (Cam Gigandet) awakens one morning to find his crotch as smooth as a Ken doll's, and that his penis has now taken on the form of a slovenly bro (Nick Thune) who remains determined to run, and destroy, Rich's life. But it's a life that goes on.
Unlike other recent movies that have posited emasculation as a fate worse than death — yeah, you, Dom Hemingway — Bad Johnson remains surprisingly mellow about the aftermath, becoming a not-terrible relationship comedy...

“I wish my d*ck would just leave me alone.” No, really, that’s the first key line of dialogue in Cam Gigandet’s “Bad Johnson.” Purporting to be a comedy (!?), the movie is about a charismatic womanizer who receives his comeuppance after his penis mysteriously leaves his body and takes human form. No, really. And then his penis, well, turns into a total dick. "It's me your penis," Gigandet’s penis (played by a bearded Nick Thune) says at one point greeting him in his car. The rest of the trailer is… special. Very, very special. Directed by Huck Botko (“Mail Order Wife”), written by Jeff Tetreault and co-starring Jamie Chung and Kevin Miller, you have to see this trailer to believe it. This just looks spectacularly… wrong is perhaps the PC way to put it. Early contender for Razzie of the year? Indie distribs Gravitas Ventures is actually...

Lucky Them
Written by Huck Botko and Emily Wachtel
Directed by Megan Griffiths
USA, 2013
Stories about love are always difficult to tell; the cinema landscape is filled with such stories that didn’t work for numerous possible reasons, which makes an effective story that much more rewarding to watch. Rather than focus on the love story, however, Lucky Them screenwriters Huck Botko and Emily Wachtel explore the effects of the abrupt end of a relationship on a woman, and alongside director Megan Griffiths, manage to tell a story that earns its emotional reactions while still offering laughs.
The movie provides an excellent showcase for the often underrated Toni Collette. By its very nature of being a character study of lead character Ellie Klug, much of the burden ends up on Collette’s shoulders, and she carries it admirably, portraying the character with equal parts sadness, denial, and pessimism, all while...

We’re back with another Q&A feature, this time talking with Saturday Morning Mystery director Spencer Parsons, who tells us about growing up with Scooby-Doo, balancing horror and comedy, and his time on the set of the movie:
With this movie being Scooby-Doo influenced, can you tell me about your experience with Scooby-Doo as a child? What’s one of your favorite episodes?
Spencer Parsons: Oh yeah, when I was little, it was huge to me. My little brother and I would stay over at my grandmother’s house and wake up early to watch it with my older cousins while snarfing down sugary breakfast cereals my mom never let us have. By the time Jason of Star Command came on, I’d be flying high on Count Chocula, trying to get pony rides from the cocker spaniel. So I’d call it formative.

Between the screenwriting announcement for the 50 Shades Of Grey film and now this, you might suspect movieland had sex on the brain today. But then it is movieland, so that pretty much means a day that ends in a “Y”. Still, this project is something a little crazier, as Cam Gigandet and Nick Thune have signed on to star in Johnson. How crazy? Try the fact that it’s the story of lothario Rich Johnson (Gigandet) whose penis gets so sick and tired of being overworked that it abandons his body and takes on human form (Thune). So then Johnson has to find some way to win back his favourite appendage while – of course! – becoming a better man in the process.Writer Jeff Tetreault owns the twisted noggin that burped this one into life, with The Virginity Hit’s Huck Botko set to continues his sex-themed directing career. “It’s semi-autobiographical,...

Do you love all of the dick jokes in today’s raunchy, R-rated comedies, but hate it when the movies stray away from its protagonists’ penises and try to put their focus on something else, like flash mobs, food trucks, or burgeoning art careers? Then the new comedy from screenwriter Jeff Tetreault, Johnson, might be exactly what you’re looking for. The movie is about a womanizer named Rich Johnson (get it?) whose genitals feel so overworked by his sexual conquests that they take human form, leave his body, and refuse to come back until he learns how to be a better man. According to THR, Twilight star Cam Gigandet has been signed to play Johnson, while comedian Nick Thune has been tapped to play the johnson. Wondering how exactly one depicts a wang taking human form on film? You’re in luck, Tetreault has another dick joke to tell as a non-answer to this question. He...

Because of the massive successes of The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Wedding Crashers, The Hangover, and Bridesmaids, there's been no shortage of crude comedies trying to outdo each other with gross-out gags, strange sex antics, and wild one-liners. But Huck Botko, co-writer and co-director of the 2010 R-rated comedy The Virginity Hit, is taking raunchiness to a whole new level with his upcoming indie feature Johnson. Variety reports Cam Gigandet (Twilight) and Nick Thune (Not That Funny) will co-star, sharing the titular role in different respects. See, this comedy, penned by Jeff Tetreault, centers on one Rich Johnson, a wealthy and handsome young man who is a merciless and self-centered womanizer. But Rich is forced to re-evaluate his life and become a better person after his actions cause him to lose his manhood. And by that I mean his penis mystically takes human form and runs away. As far as I’m concerned, anything that brings up the late, great Paul Newman warrants your attention — regardless of any finer details. Fortunately, this story pertains to something that might end up being good in its own right, with Deadline informing us that Newman‘s widow, Joanne Woodward, has helped assemble the cast for Lucky Them. What does this have to do with Fast Eddie Felson? As I learned whilst reading the article — and as you’ll learn when you’re done reading this interjection — Lucky Them inspired strong interest in and attention from the actor before his death.

It’s a late bloomers coming-of-age quirky romantic comedy, and a semi-autobiographical tale about the writer’s life in NYC, dating musicians and finding herself when most of her friends have settled down. Newman helped the filmmakers early on, giving them notes and sending the script to actors. He wanted to do a cameo in the film. Since Newman liked the project so much, Woodward put her name on it to help the cause,...

More like The Second to Last Exorcism.
Those that saw The Last Exorcism, Lionsgate's 2010 faux-documentary horror movie, know that the ending didn't easily set up for a sequel, but earning $67 million worldwide on a budget of $1.8 million was too much of an incentive for Lionsgate, who announced that screenwriter Damien Chazelle (Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench) would write the sequel last August (Andrew Gurland and Huck Botko (The Virginity Hit) wrote the original). The studio clearly liked what Chazelle wrote since the latest announcement includes a director.

The joke is easy, but, as it seems, the Last Exorcism wasn’t really the last one after all.
A sequel has in fact been confirmed for the movie that proved to be a hit last year amongst both horror fans and critics alike. Grossing $62.5 million worldwide on a relatively modest budget of $1.6 million, The Last Exorcism told the story of an exorcist who doesn’t believe in demonic possessions and allows a camera crew to follow him on his last assignment to prove that exorcisms are, in fact, frauds.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the sequel will be financed by Studio Canal and shooting will start after the summer, and while the first Exorcism saw Andrew Gurland and Huck Botko as writers of the script, screenwriter Damien Chazelle has been entrusted with writing the follow-up this time around.

Horror sequels aren't a complicated thing — if a movie achieves any amount of financial success, another installment isn't likely far behind. That's why it was surprising that, after earning $67 million worldwide on a budget of $1.8 million, Lionsgate didn't immediately announce a sequel to The Last Exorcism last August. That's all changed now.
THR reports that a sequel is on the way with a new screenwriter, Damien Chazelle (Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench). Andrew Gurland and Huck Botko (The Virginity Hit) wrote the original.

The Last Exorcism was a surprise horror movie hit last summer. The Last Exorcism is a found-footage film that was written by Andrew Gurland and Huck Botko. While the ending of the film did not deserve applause it was thought provoking and lead to many discussions among horror freaks. Not only was the film great it was made on a budget of $1.6 million and grossed $62.5 million. Yesterday The Heat reported that producers are moving ahead with a sequel to The Last Exorcism. Damien Chazelle has been contracted to write the script for the film, which is slated for production this fall. With >>...

‘Grand Piano’ screenwriter Damien Chazelle has signed onto pen the script for the sequel to the surprise summer 2010 hit film ‘The Last Exorcism,’ according to The Hollywood Reporter. The producers of the mockumentary horror movie decided to move ahead with a follow-up, as the original garnered $62.5 million worldwide against a budget of $1.6 million. Chazelle will replace Andrew Gurland and Huck Botko, who penned ‘The Last Exorcism’ for Strike Entertainment. Studio Canal is financing the sequel, and production is expected to begin this fall. The first film followed Evangelical preacher Cotton Marcus, played by Patrick Fabian, who decides to stop performing exorcisms. He allows a documentary crew to...

Just when Father Cotton Marcus thought he was out of the demon hunting business, they pulled him back in...No film is safe from a sequel, even when the entire conceit of that film rails against it, and so it is with no great surprise that THR's Heat Vision brings us the news that Damien Chazelle is penning a sequel to the mockumentary horror hit. Chazelle, a Hollywood up-and-comer, wasn't associated with the first film, which was written by Andrew Gurland and Huck Botko. At this point, no one from the original film (including director Daniel Stamm) is set to return.Story details are scarce at this early date. It's not known whether the "Exorcism" sequel will follow the further adventures of Father Cotton Marcus (and I actually hope it does, it would be cool to see him as a reformed and avenging priest), or if it will follow a new priest.

What happened to truthful movie titles? It appears the title of last year's The Last Exorcism was guilty of fibbing as a sequel to the surprise hit is now in the works, with a writer already in place. Heat Vision Blog has the exclusive on the news that screenwriter Damien Chazelle has been tapped to write the script for a Last Exorcism sequel, taking over from writers of the first film Andrew Gurland and Huck Botko. One can only wonder what imaginative title they will come up with this time around - Somehow I don't think "No Really, This Is The Last Exorcism" would look good on the poster... Issues with the name aside it's not entirely surprising they're doing another one since the first...

Eli Roth and Daniel Stamm's The Last Exorcism made nearly $67 million worldwide last year, and while that may not sound like a ton of money, it cost just $1.8 million to make. As you can probably guess, that kind of profit means that The Last Exorcism may not be as final as the title would have you believe. According to Heat Vision, Studio Canal will finance and produce a follow-up to the film and they are planning to head into production sometime this fall. It would appear, however, that none of the original talent will be involved in the sequel. Andrew Gurland and Huck Botko (The Virginity Hit) wrote the script for the first one, but this time around a guy named Damien Chazelle has been hired to pen the sequel. No word yet on whether or not Eli Roth will return as producer. Damien Chazelle only has one credit...

Given that horror thriller The Last Exorcism made $62.5 million worldwide from a thrifty budget of $1.6 million, it’s not really a surprise to report that a sequel is now in the works. The film, which also scored Best Horror against the likes of Let Me In and Paranormal Activity 2 at our own awards ceremony, was a found footage gem that saw troubled evangelical preacher Cotton Marcus (Patrick Fabian) inviting a documentary crew along to his final exorcism to finally reveal that the practice is fake. But when they arrive at the family home of farmer Louis Sweetzer (Louis Herthum), who has called Marcus in to help his daughter Nell (Ashley Bell), they all discover a lot more than they bargained for…While Huck Botko and Andrew Gurland wrote the script for the first movie, the job of penning the sequel has been handed to rising newcomer scribe Damien Chazelle.

For their 5th annual event, which is set to run Sept. 8-11, the Sydney Underground Film Festival is looking a little more demented than ever. And that’s saying a lot for this scrappy, still relatively young fest, which typically offers ample twisted cinematic offerings.
The fun kicks off with the Opening Night film, the demented superhero comedy Super, written and directed by former Troma go-to screenwriter James Gunn (Tromeo & Juliet); then ends with the Closing Night wallowing in Sydney’s seedy underbelly, X, by homegrown filmmaker Jon Hewitt.
Crammed between these two excursions into violence and depravity is a lineup filled with perverse visions, scandalous public figures, sickening horror, experimental pop culture remixes and more.
For Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film, the highlight of the fest is Usama Alshaibi‘s Profane, a complex psychological, psychosexual, spiritual morality play about a Muslim sex worker who endures a “reverse...

Hayes joins 'Stooges': 20th Century Fox continues to fill out its cast for the Farrelly Brothers' Three Stooges remake, with Sean Hayes ("Will and Grace") entering the fold as Larry. Hayes joins Will Sasso ("$#*! My Dad Says"), who was cast as Curly last week. The casting of TV actors seems a bit odd, especially since names like Jim Carrey, Sean Penn and Benicio Del Toro were once attached to the project. It now looks like the Farrellys are finding actors who best fit the roles, rather than just gathering big names. I have to give them credit for that. Stay tuned, the third leg in the tripod (Moe) will likely be cast this week. [Variety]

Marisa Tomei, Thomas Haden Church, Alec Baldwin and Allison Janney are set for the leads in the upcoming indie film Lucky Them, according to Variety. The film is co-written and directed by Huck Botko (writer of The Last Exorcism and writer/director of The Virginity Hit). The story follows a “rock music journo assigned to track down her ex-boyfriend.” So far we don't know any specifics about the cast, but it's most likely that Tomei will play the journalist.
The film is being funded by John Henry, owner of the Boston Red Sox and his wife Linda Pizzuti Henry, and was the last producing project for Paul Newman before his death. Newman's wife, Joanne Woodward, has taken over as executive producer and production is expected to begin later this year.

It’s a good sign for any project, big or small, when it builds up an impressive cast before a lot of movement happens in terms of any development. Such is the case for the upcoming indie film Lucky Them, which Variety says has pulled in Marisa Tomei, Thomas Haden Church, Alec Baldwin and Allison Janney for its leads.
The film, co-written and directed by The Last Exorcism writer and The Virginity Hit writer/director Huck Botko, follows a “rock music journo assigned to track down her ex-boyfriend.” None of the cast members have been specified, although it’s not that out there to assume Tomei is the journalist. Still, even that’s just a guess.

While "The Last Exorcism" couldn't muster up a decent scare and "The Virginity Hit" was a non-starter, Huck Botko--who wrote the former and wrote/directed the latter--seems to be making a step into feature films that have a budget that requires more than running around with a handheld camera. Variety reports that Marisa Tomei, Thomas Haden Church, Allison Janney and Alec Baldwin (who recently bailed on "Men In Black 3" and is likely filling up his calendar) are set to star in "Lucky Them" which boasts a pretty intriguing premise. One of the ways the Spirit Awards has continued to celebrate what's new and next has been by honoring genre films that are typically overlooked when it comes to year-end ceremonies and top ten lists. After all, what other non-genre specific awards show would've had the gumption to put up "Wes Craven's New Nightmare" for Best Feature as the Spirits did in 1995? Yet that surprising nod shouldn't come as all that surprising to those who have followed the Spirit Awards through the years, where horror and sci-fi have long been an integral part of the proceedings, not only to highlight what's been the best for a particular year, but what new voices are on the horizon.
Naturally, the Best First Feature category has been a hotbed for filmmakers who quickly make their mark with genre films. Although audiences didn't immediately embrace Richard Kelly's time-travel drama "Donnie Darko" in 2002, the...
