The outlandish debut feature from writer/producer Robert Scott Wildes, “Poor Boy,” debuted in the Viewpoints section of the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival, then disappeared back into the editing room. But thanks to distributor Indican Pictures (“The Boondock Saints”) — which acquired the feature at last month’s Cannes Film Market — theater-goers will soon be able to watch two-time Oscar nominee Michael Shannon’s turn as a dispirited rodeo clown.
In a supporting role, Shannon plays the father of the film’s thieving protagonists, Romeo/”Prickface” Griggs and Samson Griggs, residents of a boat in the middle of the desert. The wanted brothers loot everything from lawnmowers to cameras, and supplement their income by convincing people to bet on rigged volleyball games. To finance their dream of sailing to California, they seek out a mail-order bride for Samson, hoping she comes with an ample dowry. “Silicon Valley” cast member Amanda Crew plays...

"The world is strange..." Indican Pictures has released a trailer for a funky indie film titled Poor Boy, from filmmaker Robert Scott Wildes. This actually premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and New Hampshire Film Festival back in 2016, but it has been waiting for a release and is finally going to hit a few cinemas this year. Poor Boy is about two misfit redneck brothers who run various cash scams in the desert dreaming of getting out. When the bank threatens to repossess their junky home in the Nevada desert, they "cook up an epic con to finally leave their dusty town behind and sail off into the sunset." Lou Taylor Pucci and Dov Tiefenbach star as the two brothers, and the cast includes Justin Chatwin, Amanda Crew, Pat Healy, Amy Ferguson, Dale Dickey, plus Michael Shannon as a sad rodeo clown. This looks a bit too insane. Here's the...

At your wit’s end and you have nowhere else to go, what do you do? Obviously, you become a thief and a robber, and eventually become so good at that that now other con-men start coming to you for help and you start robbing them.
Much easier said than done, at least what the cast of Poor Boy can agree with. First time director Robert Scott Wildes shows off his directing chops in Poor Boy, a film that follows two brothers as they continue a series of robberies in order to survive – until one day they come across a woman who threatens their home and livelihood. Faced with trouble with the law and with other con-men, the two brothers resort to making the greatest heist of all as they try to get away scot-free.

Robert Scott Wildes’ debut feature film Poor Boy has its world premiere next week at the Tribeca Film Festival in the Viewpoints section. Lou Taylor Pucci, Dov Tiefenbach, Michael Shannon, Dale Dickey, Pat Healy, Amy Ferguson, Amanda Crew and Justin Chatwin star in the pic, which is being described as a darkly nuanced, adrenaline-filled caper set in a modern western landscape. The exclusive first look gives off a vibe of a kind of over-anxious optimism in the desert as…...

Whether you are a filmmaker, or one of the Sundance programmers whose task it is to identify the films that make up a line-up, it is indeed the most wonderful, panic-filled and nerve racking time of the year. The 31st edition of the Sundance Film Festival kicks off on January 22nd with Park City and Salt Lake City playing host to some of the more innovative, thought-provoking narrative and non-fiction films of 2015. Last year, a Jenga tall order of 4,057 features and 8,161 shorts were submitted. Now let’s think about those numbers for a second.
Twenty years ago, Terry Zwigoff’s Crumb claimed the Grand Jury Prize Documentary award, Living in Oblivion‘s Tom Dicillo was honored with the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award, and Edward Burns’ micro-budgeted The Brothers McMullen (there is a read-worthy, lively, eleventh hour account on how it was submitted to the fest in Ted Hope’s “Hope...

Review by Andrew McArthur
Abel Ferrara‘s latest work Welcome to New York is a film so unflinching in its portrait of excess and moral-corruption that it makes The Wolf of Wall Street look like it was produced by Cbeebies.
Devereaux (Gerard Depardieu), one of the world’s most powerful businessmen is filled with a gratuitous sexual hunger – a man so entangled in his lifestyle of power, sex and money that he believes everything is his. This is until Deveraux sexually assaults a hotel maid in New York and finds himself arrested, on the verge of being stripped of this power. Ferrara uses the high-profile case of Dominique Strauss-Kahn as his factual basis for this slow-burning piece filled with excess and debauchery.

Boarding schools seem to be a hotbed of sexual experimentation, at least that's how it seems from watching them on film. Interestingly, it's a trend that doesn't seem to be going away anytime soon. We've seen all-girls dormitories as a plot device since the 1930s, and yet there have been three released in the last year alone. Is it a coincidence that four out of eight of our Best Lesbian Boarding School Movies are directed and/or written by out women, two of which are said to be based on real life stories? Seems as if boarding schools might not be punishment as much as they are places to find your first love.

I remember, around twenty years ago, reading an interview with director Martin Scorsese, shortly after he scored his first commercial hit with a major studio, GoodFellas. He said he hoped to one day shoot a movie on 65mm film. He wanted to specifically use the process, not to capture an epic battle scene or panoramic landscape, but just two characters conversing in a long hallway. Sounds awfully simple and something not as grand as we might expect from a cinematic director, like say, David Lean. But I understand what Scorsese was getting at. Scorsese’s films have always focused on character and performances and what better way to capture them than the high resolution of 65mm film. It comes as no surprise that director Paul Thomas Anderson shares that same sentiment and for a time was compared to a young Scorsese early in his own career.

"Tanner Hall", the 2009 indie drama from Anchor Bay Films, is now available on Blu-ray and DVD, following four teen girls 'coming-of-age' in a boarding school, written and directed by Tatiana von Fürstenberg and Francesca Gregorini. The film was developed by von Fürstenberg and Gregorini while they attended Brown University, after both women realized they had both attended boarding schools as children.
Cast includes Brie Larson, Amy Ferguson, Rooney Mara ("The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo"), Georgia King, Tom Everett Scott, Amy Sedaris, Chris Kattan, and Shawn Pyfrom :
"...it is fall, and 'Fernanda' (Mara) returns to her beloved 'Tanner Hall' to begin the new school year. She is yearning to see her old friends 'Kate' (Larson) and 'Lucasta' (Ferguson). Although clearly girls of privilege, they exhibit none of the stereotypical behaviors assumed of children of their class. They are at once worldly and innocent, hovering on the razor's edge between adolescence and adulthood.

Title: Tanner Hall Directed By: Francesca Gregorini and Tatiana von Furstenberg Starring: Rooney Mara, Georgia King, Brie Larson, Amy Ferguson, Tom Everett Scott, Chris Kattan, Shawn Pyfrom, Ryan Schira, Amy Sedaris Sure, it’s nice for a film to have a solid script paired with appropriate visuals, but sometimes, movies can get away with having the former, but not the latter. The bigger problem comes when you’re trying to achieve the reverse and mask weak writing with a pretty picture. In fact, in most instances, it’s impossible and Tanner Hall is certainly an example of one of those cases. It’s another year at Tanner Hall boarding school. Fernanda, Kate and Lucasta...

Adolescence is a time of new awakenings, growing into one’s identity, taking the first tottering steps into adulthood – and making very, very poor decisions. Because the main plot of Tanner Hall focuses on a four teenage girls who attend a boarding school in New England, a series of poor decisions move the plotline forward, if somewhat predictably.
First there is Victoria (Georgia King), the troublemaker with a dangerous streak and an obsession with death - a more subtle version of Angelina Jolie’s character in Girl, Interrupted. She makes most of the poor decisions that get the girls into trouble, including stealing the key to the dormitory and getting the crew to sneak out via social manipulation and a couple of well placed lies.

Anchor Bay's upcoming drama Tanner Hall, about the drama contained within the walls of an all-girls boarding school, will open in theaters on September 9th, and they've just released the poster and some images from the film. Considering how somber the film looks from the images and trailer, I can't help but feel the poster is misleadingly cheerful in an effort to drive more people into the seats - but we'll have to wait and see. For now, we've included the poster, pics, and even the trailer below, so maybe I'm just imagining things and the rest of the world thinks the poster is accordingly bright and cheery.

Shy and studious, Fernanda is usually the voice of reason among her friends—adventurous and sexy Kate (Brie Larsen) and tomboy Lucasta (Amy Ferguson)—but when she begins a complicated friendship with Gio (Tom Everett Scott), an older family friend, she decides it’s finally time to take some risks.

Rooney Mara made a significant impression in The Social Network, thanks in large part to the way she held her own against Jesse Eisenberg in the film's long opening scene. Now she's working again for David Fincher in one of the two starring roles in his version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. So there's a good chance she's going to be huge. But after Dragon Tattoo is done it looks like she'll take a moment to be in a smaller film. The actress has been cast in Emanuel And The Truth About Fishes, from her Tanner Hall co-director Francesca Gregorini. The Playlist [1] has the news, saying that the film is about " a young, troubled woman who becomes obsessed with her mysterious, new neighbor that looks uncannily like her dead mother." This film will shoot in the summer, and we'll be really interested to see who is cast as the mother and neighbor.

Anchor Bay is set to distribute Tanner Hall, the directorial debut of Francesca Gregorini and Tatiana von Furstenberg. The film premiered last fall at Tiff to buzz, but it gained traction as a result of Rooney Mara landing the lead role in David Fincher's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.
After Toronto, the film looked like it would be picked up right away, but that did not happen. Anchor Bay has stepped in and bought the domestic, UK, Australia, and New Zealand rights. As you would expect, Tanner Hall will be released in near the December 21 release date of Dragon Tattoo.
The coming-of-age film drama also stars Tom Everett Scott, Chris Kattan, and Amy Sedaris and takes place at a boarding school in a New England town. The story follows four restless teens as they come of age. Mara, Brie Larsen, Georgia King, and Amy Ferguson star as the four teens.

I feel a special bond with the Sundance Film Festival. Not because I’ve been there, but because the guy in charge of it this year, John Cooper, shares my name. Because we share this bond, I feel that I’m able to take license in referring to the man as Coop for the rest of this article.
For the annual event held in Park City, Utah from January 21-31, thousands of films are submitted and screened — this year, 3,724 films were viewed by the festival’s ten programmers. I wonder when they slept.
Coop has high hopes for the festival as a whole:
“We may even be going into a golden age for independent films, in that the technology will make it possible for the films to be made and for audiences to see them. The industry is going through a major evolutionary stage right now, there’s no doubt about that,...

The Sundance Film Festival has unveiled the lineup of films playing in competition from January 21 through January 31, 2010. The early fest typically debuts some of the best films the year has to offer, like 2009’s Precious, (500) Days of Summer, and Moon.
I’m bummed I won’t be in Park City, Utah next month because the lineup looks great, and these are just the films playing in competition. Here’s a few that stood out to me:
The Allen Ginsberg trial film Howl starring James Franco, a documentary by Alex Gibney (a truly great filmmaker) on Jack Abramoff, Mark Ruffalo’s directorial debut Sympathy for Delicious, a doc about Joan Rivers, the directorial debut of “How I Met Your Mother” star Josh Radnor titled Happythankyoumoreplease (I wrote a glowing script review of it here), Hesher with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Natalie Portman, and Blue Valentine starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams.

Although the Sundance Film Festival might have tried to wring some extra sunshine from its selections last year, the 2010 lineup looks to be back to its typical mirthless self. One could say it has gone from "You gotta give 'em hope" to "You gotta give 'em mope."
"That's our filmmakers," festival director John Cooper said with an amused mix of pride and resignation. "There's some lightness in here somewhere."
Yes, it's wedged back behind the assassinations, political corruption, war carnage, crumbling educational system and Khmer Rouge revelations. The fest, which runs Jan. 21-31 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah, might start to feel like 11 Days of Glummer.
But perhaps that's to be expected. The implosion of the independent distribution system amid the ever-present threats of a maimed economy and two wars has provided festival organizers and filmmakers an opportunity to cut loose and follow their probing passions,...
