Billy Ray, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter, director and producer who has used his downtime during the Hollywood labor strife between shifts on the picket lines to turn Strike Talk into a tour de force that has demystified the issues and explained the inflection point that made this standoff unavoidable, this week strikes his most hopeful tone in the 21 podcasts he has done so far.
For the first time, he is openly musing that this podcast might be nearing its final act, this after a week in which the WGA and signatories met twice with encouraging results, and with some of the top moguls seated at the table with AMPTP negotiator Carol Lombardini.

Hillary Clinton, not long ago the nominee of the Democratic Party, had some choice words about the state of American politics Friday.

PBS president and CEO Paula Kerger has signed a 5-year contract extension with the company.
Kerger made the announcement at the network’s summer Television Critics Association press tour. She has been in the role since 2006 and represents the longest-running PBS president in the broadcaster’s history.
“You always wrestle with the question how long is long enough,” Kerger said. “I want to make sure that when I do hang up those skates, I’ve done everything to make sure public television is on a sound a foundation as possible.”
During her executive session, Kerger addressed once again the Trump administration’s continued attempts to zero out federal funding for public broadcasting and how PBS is planning to combat the loss of funding going forward.

Updated with video. Bill Maher closed a fairly by-the-book episode of HBO’s Real Time with an inspired anti-p.C. monologue linking leftist criticism of 2020 Democratic presidential candidates with attacks on this year’s Oscar Best Picture nominees for various sociopolitical reasons.
“This time, let’s not eat our own,” Maher suggested about the Democratic hopefuls, referencing the undermining of Hillary Clinton in 2016 by many Democrats. With the early field of candidates already being picked apart, he hit back and then slyly bridged to awards season. “This is a real problem in our society, looking to dump someone good because there must be someone more perfect,” he said. “And sometimes, what you end up with is, no one to host the Oscars at all.”
The Academy Awards, he declared, “are being ruined by these same kinds of ridiculous purity tests.” He rattled off a few examples, barely a week before...

President Trump doesn’t have many tentpole accomplishments to tout as his presidency enters its third year. He does have the economy, though, which has boomed since he assumed office back in January 2017. He might not have it much longer. On Wednesday, Apple CEO Tim Cook warned that the company wasn’t going to earn as much as expected in the coming financial quarter. “While we anticipated some challenges in key emerging markets, we did not foresee the magnitude of the economic deceleration, particularly in Greater China,” he wrote in a letter to investors.

Political reporters are claiming that President Obama is only now "tweaking" his message that "if you like your plan, you can keep it" by qualifying the statement, as he did in a speech Monday night. On Monday, a debate over United Nations Ambassador Susan Rice’s fitness to replace Sec. Hillary Clinton as the Secretary of State between CNN contributors Donna Brazile and David Frum descended into a heated argument. Frum contended that President Barack Obama supports Rice primarily because she was loyal to him during the 2008 primaries against Clinton – an assertion which Brazile did not appreciate.

Word leaked last month that liberal icons Martin Sheen, Woody Harrelson and Ed Asner are tied to the upcoming "truther" film September Morn, described as a 12 Angry Men-style look at the events of 9/11.
"That’s a bit premature. I read the script and talked to the director, but it’s not a fait accompli,"Sheen told The Huffington Post Canada during a recent interview in Calgary. "[September Morn is] a very interesting examination of the 9/11 Commission’s report, and it really challenges a lot of their findings as being very, very less than complete."
September Morn, produced by the same studio behind the Oklahoma City bombing doc A Noble Lie, was initially revealed in an exclusive post on Deadline.com which was later pulled down. But don’t fire up your conspiracy engines just yet, as that was most likely because the film is still so up in the air.

MSNBC host Joe Scarborough accused the conservative media Monday of lying about the challenges facing Republicans throughout the 2012 election season. His comments echo incendiary remarks made last week by speechwriter and Newsweek columnist David Frum. "If I were a donor, my biggest problem would be that I was lied to. I was lied to by the, as David Frum said, the conservative entertainment establishment," Scarborough said on "Morning Joe." "I mean, the conservative media establishment. They lied to the donors, they lied to the base, they lied to everybody about...

Newsweek columnist David Frum called Republican leaders "cowards" and said the right-wing base has been lied to by a "conservative entertainment complex." Frum, a conservative who served as a speechwriter for President George W. Bush, made his remarks Friday on MSNBC's "Morning Joe." He added that the Gop had been overrun by fear-mongers. "The problem with Republican leaders is that they're cowards," Frum said, adding that the party's base of donors "went apocalyptic" in the last four years. "Republicans have been fleeced and exploited and lied to by a conservative entertainment complex," he...

"Inside the Obamacare Ruling: How Roberts Got A Majority," by Daniel Fisher, Forbes
"The cobbled-together nature of the decision doesn’t diminish its sheer legal cleverness, bordering on brilliance. By upholding the law, Roberts sheltered the court from liberal criticism. At the same time he asserted at least two powerful holdings that pushed the authority of the court further than it had ever gone before. That makes Roberts the heir to the one of the first Chief Justices, John Marshall, who protected the infant court from being strangled in its crib in the early years of this country while also establishing its power to invalidate acts of Congress."

It's not often a liberal political satirist experiences a bout of nostalgia for the good old conservative days.
But after Jeb Bush's controversial remarks earlier this week, which threw the Republican Party into a frenzy, Bill Maher couldn't resist reminiscing about a once moderate Gop with former President Ronald Reagan at the helm.
"Ronald Reagan raised taxes, he was for no nukes...He was very much for collective bargaining...Today, that's Dennis Kucinich," said Maher on his "Real Time" show Friday night.
While Maher remarked on how the Gop has shifted further to the right over the years, he offered his sympathies to Newsweek and Daily Beast editor David Frum, who he called a “frog-marched out to the desert” thanks to his moderate Republican stance.
The discussion moved on to George H. W. Bush and his moderate track record, with Maher being not so forgiving about his running mate choice.

Former George W. Bush speechwriter David Frum sat down with CNN's Soledad O'Brien to promote his new novel Patriots, when the discussion turned to the controversy over President Obama's new ad which claims Mitt Romney wouldn't have gone after Osama bin Laden. "We've been talking a lot about whether or not this Osama bin Laden killing has been politicized for political parties," O'Brien noted. "Do you think that it has been with President Obama -- what's the line between touting your record in an election year and going over that line and making it sort of political?" "If this raid had gone badly, President Obama would have had to wear the blame so because it goes well, he gets the credit. That's the political deal. And I don't think anybody in politics should deny him any smidgen of credit," Frum acknowledged.

Sarah Palin lacked the preparation or temperament to be one heartbeat away from the presidency, but what she possessed in abundance was the ability to inflame political passions and energize the John McCain campaign with star quality. That much we already knew. What I didn't expect to discover after viewing "Game Change," a new HBO film about the 2008 McCain campaign, was how much sympathy I would feel for Palin, and even more for John McCain.
The movie is largely told from the point of view of two McCain advisers, Steve Schmidt (Woody Harrelson) and Nicolle Wallace (Sarah Paulson). Schmidt was instrumental in the selection of Palin (Julianne Moore) as the running mate of McCain (Ed Harris), and Wallace was another senior adviser. During the campaign, they share their concern as Palin reveals a comprehensive lack of knowledge about current events.
In the days before Palin's selection, it seemed so much simpler.
