Founded in 2012, Paris-based WTFilms, run by Gregory Chambet and Dimitri Stephanides, has built a strong reputation as a sales agent for break-out genre pics and has recently diversified into production, to access hit projects. As competition ramps up for more ambitious projects with strong theatrical potential, Chambet decided to move to Los Angeles in mid-2023, while Stephanides remains based in Paris.
“At WTFilms, we aim to continue to work on both sides of the Atlantic,” explains Chambet. “In the current market it’s important to invest in projects by talented directors, with innovative concepts, budgeted above $5 million. It makes sense for me to be based here because we work a lot with partners here and L.A. is a key talent hub. We’re on the lookout for talent from all around the world. There are really exciting genre directors popping up everywhere – in North America and also in Latin America and Asia.

Méridien Blues
It was a bumpy start to the AFM’s tenure at new home Le Méridien Delfina. Most industry we spoke to were unhappy about something venue-related whether it be the noisy strikes that took place all week, cost, size of rooms, “maze-like” structure, slow lifts (the fire department was reportedly called Friday to help guests stuck in one of the two lifts serving the hotel’s lobby), parking issues, location or general aesthetic. Talk of alternatives continues to bubble. Miami and Las Vegas were mooted destinations among disgruntled industry. But a reimagined fall market has been a long-running point of discussion and many still think Los Angeles offers more than most cities. AFM organizers IFTA told us they have a multi-year deal with the Méridien so it may be a case of listening, learning and improving where possible.

Four years after exploring the interwoven horrors of adolescence and parenthood in the bold neo-noir Knives and Skin (the film's solemn cover of the Go-Go's "Our Lips Are Sealed" is still one of the most memorable scenes I've watched in the past decade), filmmaker Jennifer Reeder returns to the haunted halls of high school to expose more societal injustices, toxic masculinity, and timely anxieties in Perpetrator.
Centered on teenager Jonny Baptiste (Kiah McKirnan), who is teetering on the verge of adulthood as she grapples with her unique shapeshifting ability with a little unconventional help from her stern-yet-caring Aunt Hildie (Alicia Silverstone), Perpetrator is now streaming on Shudder and playing theatrically in New York.

Welcome to Global Breakouts, Deadline’s new strand in which, each fortnight, we shine a spotlight on the TV shows and films killing it in their local territories. The industry is as globalized as it’s ever been, but breakout hits are appearing in pockets of the world all the time and it can be hard to keep track. So we’re going to do the hard work for you.
This week we visit French director Xavier Gens’s Thailand-set fight-fest Farang, which has shown independent French action movies can hold their own in cinemas and find international buyers. Released against a real-life background of fury towards the police following the killing of a French teenager during a traffic stop in June, the film has shown there remains an appetite for genre movie in the country.

In this haunting thriller, a new variation of psychological horror invites audiences to question the limitations of our contemporary relationships with people and spaces, and the implications of undealt trauma.

Over the past 12 months, Paris-based sales agent WTFilms has produced two features: “Perpetrator,” by Jennifer Reeder (“Knives and Skin”), which will world premiere in the Panorama section at Berlin Film Festival, and Xavier Gens’ thriller “Farang,” which is co-financed and repped by Studiocanal.
“Perpetrator,” starring Kiah McKirnan (“Mare of Easttown”) and Alicia Silverstone, is about an impulsive teenage girl living in a town where young women are being abducted. It is produced by WTFilms’ topper Gregory Chambet, and Derek Bishé for Divide/Conquer.
In December, Shudder, AMC Networks’ horror/thriller streaming service, acquired U.S. rights.
Reeder calls it “dark but feminine, a nuanced noir, a grrrl power take on modern horror.” Chambet says there is strong audience interest in feminine horror films, with powerful female leads and highlights the performances of Alicia Silverstone as Aunt Hildie and Kiah McKirnan as wild child Jonny, who gains shape-shifting powers when she...

After contributing a segment to the horror anthology V/H/S/94, which was released through the Shudder streaming service, director Jennifer Reeder made the horror film Night’s End, which was already released through Shudder. Now Reeder and Shudder are locked in for their third collaboration, as Variety reports the streaming service has acquired the distribution rights to Reeder’s latest genre film, Perpetrator. Starring Alicia Silverstone (Clueless) and Kiah McKirnan (Mare of Easttown), Perpetrator centers on
Jonny (McKirnan), an impulsive teenage girl living in a town where young women continue to go missing, and revolves around the power she’s forced to unlock to survive. The filmmakers say that the film is “inspired by the shared experience of generations of women,” as well as an “exploration of youthful chaos.”
Christopher Lowell (My Best Friend’s Exorcism), Melanie Liburd (The Idol), and Ireon Roach (Candyman) are also in the cast.

Paris-based sales agent WTFilms, which specializes in genre movies, is presenting Romain Quirot’s sophomore feature film, “Apache: Gang of Paris,” at the Unifrance Rendez-Vous in Paris.
The pic is an ambitious revenge movie set in early 20th century Paris, when rival gangs were wreaking havoc. The term apache was coined in Paris at the time, to describe street gangs. “It’s a modern stylish and raw revenge movie,” says WTFilms’ Gregory Chambet. “We hope it will offer a renewal of the French action thriller genre, as Christophe Gans did with ‘Brotherhood of the Wolves’.”
Quirot’s freshman pic, cosmic road movie “The Last Journey,” starring Jean Reno, won Best Film at Sitges in 2020.
WTFilms’ slate also includes Quentin Dupieux’s “Incredible but True,” that follows on from his Venice-playing giant fly comedy, “Mandibles,” that starred French comedy duo Grégoire Ludig and David Marsais.

French horror, fantasy and sci-fi movies – in large part generated by a younger generation of directors combining genre and arthouse styles – are a rising force on the international scene. Among the companies riding this genre wave is WTFilms.
French crossover films are a key programming strand at A-list festivals. For example, Cannes Directors’ Fortnight last year opened with Quentin Dupieux’s “Deerskin,” repped by French sales agent WTFilms. The three French films screening at Sundance this year include Zoé Wittock’s “Jumbo,” also repped by WTFilms, about a young woman (Noémie Merlant) who falls in love with a funfair ride, which mixes real-life drama with surrealist fantasy.
WTFilms was one of the first French sales agents to define its editorial strategy around genre fare. “Deerskin,” which was produced by Arte France Cinéma, Thomas Verhaeghe and Mathieu Verhaeghe, was released in France in June and clocked up 214,000 admissions.

Freestyle Digital Media has acquired domestic rights to Bardo Blues, the feature film debut of director Marcia Klimpton. The pic stars Stephen McClintic and is based on the semi-autobiographical story of Kimpton’s mentally ill brother, and Freestyle will bow the pic in theaters and on digital May 3 during Mental Illness Awareness Month. Set in Thailand, the film follows Jack (McClintic) as he struggles to learn the truth about the mother that abandoned him and his own reason for existing. Brian Gross and Natalie Sperl also star. “Bardo Blues will have audiences question their journey through life even with some of the greatest obstacles, such as mental illness,” said Kimpton, the heir to Bill Kimpton, founder of Kimpton hotels; she is donating 10% percent of revenue on the film and and upcoming book to brain illness research.
