Ross McDonnell, an Irish filmmaker known for his Emmy-winning cinematography on “The Trade,” has died, his family confirmed more than a week after his body was reportedly found on a New York City beach. He was 44.
McDonnell died “unexpectedly” on Nov. 5, according to a notice on Rip.ie. NBC News reported Monday that the “remains appeared to be of filmmaker Ross McDonnell.”
The police received a 911 call on Nov. 17 about a torso with human legs attached found lying in the sand at Queens’ Breezy Point Beach. McDonnell disappeared earlier this month and was last seen on Nov. 4 leaving his apartment in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn on his bicycle — which was later discovered locked at Fort Tilden Beach in Queens on the Rockaway Peninsula next to Breezy Point.

The family of Emmy-winning filmmaker Ross McDonnell has confirmed his death after remains were discovered on a beach in New York City.
Police in New York did not confirm or deny initial reports about McDonnell when a dismembered body was found on a beach in Queens. McDonnell has been missing since November 4, when he went for a bike ride in his Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood. His bike was later found locked up at Fort Tilden Beach in Queens. That’s a mile or two away from Breezy Point Beach, where the headless and armless body was found on Friday.
His family announced his death in a notice on Rip.ie.
“He will be very sadly missed by his loving parents, sister, niece, aunt, uncles, cousins, extended family and his many dear friends, Lj, and also his colleagues in Ireland, USA and around the world,” said the notice.

After media speculation about a dismembered body found on a beach in Queens on Friday, CNBC and other outlets, citing “police sources,” are saying the remains “may be” those of Emmy-winning Irish filmmaker Ross McDonnell, 44. Police have not yet publicly confirmed or denied those reports.
McDonnell’s friends reportedly later found some of his clothes on the beach, and the thought is he might have gone swimming. A police source told the New York Daily News they believe the body was dismembered by the sharp rocks, waves and marine life over the past two weeks before it washed ashore.

PBS dominated the documentary portion of this year’s News and Documentary Emmys, landing ten awards overall — including three for “Pov,” two for “Independent Lens” and two for “Frontline,” which are three of the public broadcaster’s long-running, signature series.
Netflix followed with four wins, then Showtime with three. The documentary Emmys were awarded on Wednesday by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, the second of two individual ceremonies; categories honoring TV news were handed out on Tuesday.
“Tonight, we celebrate these documentary professionals who in the unprecedented year of 2020 delivered the insightful, clear, factual and timely filmmaking necessary to make sense of the tumultuous times that we live in,” said Adam Sharp, President & CEO, NATAS.
Ozy CEO Carlos Watson had originally signed on to host the documentary ceremony, but bowed out earlier this week following a New York Times article chronicling questionable claims and practices inside his company.

Deserting a festival’s official competition for a thematic retrospective can feel somewhat awkward, especially at an extravaganza so rich in new voices as the International Film Festival Rotterdam (Iffr). Yet the decision proved most fruitful with “The Spying Thing,” a sidebar Iffr devoted to “espionage as a way of filming and the camera as a spying weapon.” A 21-strong lineup offered timeless classics as well as some of the world cinema's latest offerings (László Nemes’ Sunset and Yoon Jong-bin’s The Spy Gone North). Yet “The Spying Thing” started—according to Gustavo Beck, who co-curated it alongside Gerwin Tamsma—with the second of Mariano Llinás’ monumental 3-part, 14-hour epic La Flor. I shall not attempt to dwell into Llinás’ opus magnum—Ross McDonnell already did an egregious job for the Notebook reviewing it at its Locarno premiere last August. Suffice it to say that La Flor’s second chapter...

“What happened to me wasn’t a movie, it was a true story,” comments the now-grown Elian Gonzalez about the media and political firestorm that ensued after he was rescued off the coast of Florida in 1999. But of course every sensational subject eventually becomes a movie, so his story is now retold in Tim Golden and Ross McDonnell’s comprehensive documentary adding context and a modern-day update to the tale. Bound to bring back memories for those who followed the events and prove fascinating to anyone unfamiliar with them, Elian should emrge as a ratings grabber when it premieres on CNN...

Exploring the personal and geopolitical political fall-out of the Elián González saga, Ross McDonnell and Tim Golden’s documentary is a comprehensive look at what occurred and its ramifications as the media and various stakeholders take charge of a narrative that the film’s narrator, Raul Esparza, points out was really only a five-year-old’s story to tell. Along with extensive archival materials, there’s also new interviews with subjects linked to the saga: Elián himself, now 23; his then-21-year old cousin, Marisleysis Gonzalez, who would become his caretaker and voice in the media; Jose Antonio Llama, the former head of the Cuban American National Foundation; Ins commissioner Dorris Meissner; Alan Diaz, an AP reporter who took the iconic picture of an Ins agent taking Elián at gun point; and, of course, Donato Dalrymple, the fisherman who found González tied to an inner tube and who never missed a chance to tell his story then,...

"What happened to me wasn't a movie. It was a true story." CNN Films along with Gravitas Ventures have revealed the official trailer for a documentary titled Elián, examining the story of Cuban immigrant Elián González. You may remember the story of Elián because it was huge news back in 1999/2000. Elián was 5-years-old when his mother attempted to take a small boat from Cuba to Florida. González's mother and ten others died in the crossing, but Elián was saved by a fisherman. The film tells his complete story for the first time, featuring interviews with González and his family, and narration by Tony Award nominee Raúl Esparza. This is obviously a very timely doc now considering the immigration concerns in America, but it's also an important doc about humanity and everyone's eternal struggle to live a better life. Take a look below. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Tim Golden & Ross McDonnell's doc Elián,...

I have collected several photos from many of the films playing the festival, which will take place from January 22 - February 1 in Utah next year. Today's selection includes the U.S. Dramatic Competition, U.S. Documentary Competition, World Cinema Dramatic Competition, World Cinema Documentary Competition and Next program. I'll be adding a few more pictures soon enough, but for now, have a look and see what stands out.
