James Warburton, who heads Australian network Seven, has stepped down, effective immediately.
He had already been planning to exit his Managing Director and CEO role at Seven parent Seven West Media (Swm) in June, but an update to the Australian Stock Exchange revealed finishes today.
Swm Chief Financial Officer Jeff Howard will replace him tomorrow, with Craig Haskins becoming Acting CFO until a replacement is found.
Swm Chairman Kerry Stokes and Howard both thanked Warburton for “his contribution to the business over many years.”
The well-known media exec worked for Seven between 2003 and 2011 before he exited to become CEO of rival Ten Network, which saw Seven launch legal action to slow his start. After eight years and several roles away, he rejoined Seven in 2019 as MD and CEO.

Horror can always be counted on to transform the most innocuous concepts into unsettling nightmares, especially when it comes to exploring themes of parenthood.
In horror, children frequently veer straight into creepy territory with unsettling statements and empty stares. Creepy kids in horror have been a long-running archetype, turning out iconic characters like Antichrist Damien Thorn in The Omen, The Bad Seed’s Rhoda Penmark, and the possessed Regan MacNeil in The Exorcist.
This week’s streaming picks highlight some of horror’s most unnerving children.

This article contains Gerald’s Game spoilers.
The grace and intelligence with which Mike Flanagan approached Stephen King’s Gerald’s Game novel never gets enough credit. Released to streaming in 2017, the psychological thriller with a hint of the supernatural suffered the same fate as many of the best movies released on Netflix; it blipped into the pop culture aether and then vanished from it, buried by a lack of attention. (The fact it came out the same month as WB’s splashy big budget It: Chapter One didn’t help.)
Yet the raw emotional power of the film has lingered for those who continue to discover it on the big N, as has its legacy for Flanagan, whose clarity of storytelling and vision in Gerald’s Game paved the way for a series of fascinating Netflix shows, including The Haunting of Hill House, and the chance to pull off another miracle by...

The Ouija: Origin of Evil episode of The Black Sheep was Written and Narrated by Andrew Hatfield, Edited by Brandon Nally, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
The Ouija board, and that’s weejee board not weeja board with all due respect to Joe Bob Briggs, has been a constant source of fascination since it’s inception in 1890. Ghostly movements and other supernatural appearances went back further than that and there were crude inceptions before 1890 but that’s when the board as we know it came about. It was commercialized sometime later and of course; it’s showed up as a device in horror movies ever since. The Witchboard series that started in 1986 is probably the most popular series that features the spirit communicator but another, more straightforward series called Ouija is also out there. For genre fans who grew up in the 1980s and ’90s, Fangoria will always be one of the biggest names in horror. While under control of various owners, the Fangoria brand has weaved in and out of the movie world over the decades – and the latest iteration of Fangoria launched Fangoria Studios in 2021 “to develop and produce film, television and podcasts.” Now Variety reports that Fangoria Studios is developing a live-action feature film adaptation of the manga Bloodsucking Darkness, created by Junji Ito, with The Haunting of Hill House writer Jeff Howard working on the screenplay. The search for a director is now underway.
Apparently also known as Blood Slurping Darkness, Ito’s manga is a twisted vampire story that centers on a young woman who develops an eating disorder after her boyfriend breaks up with her. She meets a boy who is concerned about her weight loss… and then...

Kate Siegel has her first chance at an Emmy nomination for Best Movie/Limited Actress for her riveting performance as Erin Greene in Netflix’s “Midnight Mass,” directed by Mike Flanagan. Watch our recent interview with the actress.
The seven-episode horror series tells of a tiny island community rocked by the arrival of two men — the disgraced Riley (Zach Gilford) returning after spending four years in prison for killing a teenage girl in a drunk driving accident, and Father Paul Hill (Hamish Linklater), the new priest at St. Patrick’s Church. Siegel plays Erin, a former girlfriend of Riley’s who works on the island as a teacher and is expecting a child. The actress has been terrific in the film “Hush” and the limited series “The Haunting of Hill House,” both also directed by Siegel’s husband Flanagan, but her lead performance in “Midnight Mass” is her best yet,...

Mike Flanagan, director of Doctor Sleep and creator of Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House, has several spectral irons in the horror genre fire right now, notably the series, Midnight Mass. Interestingly, while Covid forced the collective industry to crawl at a snail’s pace (when not frozen altogether), it appears that production has commenced for the new series.
Utilizing the tweeted image of a title-marked clapperboard, Flanagan announced today that Midnight Mass is officially on Day 1 of production. Netflix initially ordered a seven-episode inaugural season for the series back in July 2019. While Flanagan and company had been eyeing a spring start in Vancouver before the pandemic pushed things back, it seems that an all-clear of some kind has been given, and the series is finally making progress.

Various details about the script are being kept under wraps, but the pitch is: When a lost cache of Confederate gold falls into the wrong hands, an amateur crew comes together to get the gold and use it to fund long overdue reparations. A search for a director is currently underway. Craig Flores, who was behind last summer’s profitable Paramount hit Crawl, is producing under his Bread & Circuses Entertainment label. After bringing alligators to the big screen in Crawl, Alexandre Aja will next direct a new haunted house movie that will incorporate its audience into its storytelling.
According to Collider, Aja will helm an untitled haunted house movie for Amblin Partners, based on an idea by Mike Flanagan and Jeff Howard, the latter of whom will also write the script along with Nick Simon (The Girl in the Photographs) and Aja.
Collider describes the film as a "choose-your-own-adventure-style horror movie" in which audience members will vote on the decisions they'd like characters to make using an app on their phone, resulting in multiple endings and narratives for viewers to experience. Amblin is teaming up with Kino Industries’ CtrlMovie technology to create the new haunted house movie.

The HBO comedy “Barry” is having a great day. First it reaped three Golden Globe nominations and then it earned another three bids at the Writers Guild of America Awards. At the WGA, it competes for Best Comedy Series writing as well as for an individual episode and for the catch-all Best New Series award.
For the comedy series award, “Barry” faces off against reigning Emmy champ “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” as well as “Atlanta,” “Glow” and “The Good Place.” “Barry” is the only comedy up for the new series award alongside the dramas “The Haunting of Hill House,” “Homecoming,” “Pose” and “Succession.”
Of those four, only “Succession” made it into Best Drama Series where it competes against the final season of “The Americans,” season 4 of “Better Call Saul” and the sophomore editions of “The Crown” and “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
The WGA Awards winners will be revealed on Feb.

The WGA on Thursday unveiled its nominations for in TV, new media, news, radio/audio and promotional writing for 2018, with writers for Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale and NBC’s Saturday Night Live among last year’s winners to make the cut.
Last year, Handmaid’s Tale won the Drama Series category and the New Series category. HBO’s Succession has that same chance this year in drama, nominated in both categories. Another HBO series, its Bill Hader comedy Barry, was triple-nommed today including in the episodic race.
SNL returns to the Comedy/Variety sketch series category it won last season, this time facing the likes of the final season for IFC’s Portlandia and Sarah Silverman’s Hulu docuseries I Love You, America. Another returning champ, Comedy/Variety Talk Series’ Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, also landed a nom.

With the new It movie bringing in over $700 million at the worldwide box office, Warner Bros. is wasting no time getting other Stephen King adaptations to the big screen, as they have now set Mike Flanagan to direct a film adaptation of Doctor Sleep, King's sequel to The Shining.
Deadline reports the Doctor Sleep news, revealing that in addition to directing, Flanagan will rewrite the pre-existing screenplay by Akiva Goldsman. There's no word yet if Flanagan's frequent writing partner Jeff Howard will be involved.
Someone else who is confirmed to be involved, though, is Flanagan's constant collaborator Trevor Macy, who will produce the Doctor Sleep movie alongside Vertigo Entertainment's Jon Berg, with Goldsman also on board as an executive producer.
For those unfamiliar, Doctor Sleep takes place years after the harrowing events at the Overlook Hotel in The Shining. The sequel follows an adult Danny Torrance, who puts his...

There are no new horror tropes or postmodern twists, but this psychodrama induces an unpleasant atmosphere of fear
Mike Flanagan had been an unfamiliar name to me before seeing this film – but this editor-writer-director is clearly a scary movie auteur to be reckoned with. Oculus is a variation on traditional horror themes, perhaps chiefly John Carpenter's Halloween and Robert Hamer's haunted mirror sequence in the 1945 Ealing Studios portmanteau classic, Dead of Night. It is, in fact, a feature-length development of a short Flanagan made in 2006. Nothing very self-consciously new is being done with these horror tropes, and there are no postmodern twists. It's just that Flanagan (with co-writers Jeff Seidman and Jeff Howard) contrives a piercingly unpleasant atmosphere of fear. Karen Gillan stars as Kaylie, whose brother Tim (Brenton Thwaites) has just been released from a mental facility, deemed to be sane and safe after a horrific episode in their childhood.
