Awards season may well be over for another year in the world of film, with the Oscars, BAFTAs, and Golden Globes just a distant memory now. But on Sunday evening, one of the biggest nights in British TV, the BAFTA TV Awards — this year hosted by comedians Rob Beckett and Ramesh Ranganathan — took place at London’s Royal Festival Hall. And on a night where the two most nominated shows, Black Mirror and The Crown, failed to snag a single win, Happy Valley, Top Boy, and The Sixth Commandment enjoyed great success in key categories, each taking home two awards apiece.
On the night, Sarah Lancashire won Leading Actress for her all-timer of a turn as police sergeant Catherine Cawood in Happy Valley, her second BAFTA for the same role. The show also snagged the public-voted Memorable Moment award for Catherine and Tommy Lee Royce’s (James Norton) remarkable final kitchen showdown.

Updated with complete winners list: Despite being up for four acting category awards, The Crown‘s final season left the BAFTA TV Awards empty handed tonight in London.
Elizabeth Debicki, Lesley Manville, Salim Daw and Dominic West were all snubbed, as the the likes of Matthew Macfadyen, Jasmine Jobson, Timothy Spall and Sarah Lancashire all triumphed and the Netflix show went out quietly.
There was also a major surprise in the International category, where little-known French drama Class Act beat the likes of Beef, The Bear and The Last of Us to win the prize. Among the most shocked was the show’s star Laurent Lafitte, who urged the audience to find and watch his show — to the amusement of the audience.

A Road House remake is coming to Amazon Prime Video later this year, but there's a lot more to it than just your average remake.
Besides a seemingly new plot and new location, the film has also been embroiled in drama in recent months, from casting choices to producers.
Here's everything we know about the reboot of Road House and the drama involved in making the movie.
Why Are They Remaking Road House?
The reason why they decided to remake the 1989 cult classic remains unknown, but talks of the remake have been going on for nearly ten years.
In 2015, Variety reported that Ronda Rousey would be taking on the classic role of the bouncer, previously played by Patrick Swayze.
At the time, MGM was ready to start production in 2016, having already done other cult classic spinoffs, such as the Rocky spinoff Creed.

Amazon MGM Studios has released the first trailer for its remake of the 1989 action classic “Road House,” which will be available to stream globally on Prime Video on March 21.
The feature stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a former UFC fighter struggling to make ends meet. After the owner of a Florida Keys roadhouse finds him sleeping in his car, Elwood Dalton becomes a bouncer and finds himself roped into a war of outlaws and bikers and a developer determined to build a lavish resort for “rich assholes.”
“Shrinking” star Jessica Williams, who confirmed to Variety last summer she’d be joining the cast, plays the roadhouse owner. She described Gyllenhaal as an “insane actor” in the interview.
“Every time, you’re learning. My job as an actor, especially on ‘Shrinking,’ is to make everyone look good by knowing what the hell I’m doing on set,” Williams said. “I love volleying,...

It’s been a hot minute since we heard an update about an upcoming remake of The Saint starring Regé-Jean Page. Still, Deadline is here to blow the dust off this project with word that Doug Liman is officially directing The Saint remake. In addition to his starring role, Page will executive produce with Lorenzo Dibonaventura, Brad Krevoy, and the late Robert Evans.
Plot details for The Saint remake remain a mystery. However, Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani are working on the script. The Saint is based on the 1920s book series that follows Simon Templar, also known as The Saint. Often described as a Robin Hood-like criminal and thief for hire, Simon can usually be found traveling the globe and looking for adventure. As I said, plot details on the new project are confidential at this time, though sources indicate that the team is working around the clock to reimagine the character.

There’s bound to be blood on the bar room floor when Doug Liman’s Road House remake starts a rumble in theaters. According to FilmRatings.com, the update starring Jake Gyllenhaal is Rated R for violence throughout, pervasive language, and some nudity. Today’s Road House remake rating clearly indicates that Liman won’t be holding back when the film punches its way into cinemas, and Gyllenhaal’s transformation into a chiseled behemoth won’t go to waste.
The original Road House starred Patrick Swayze as Dalton, a “cooler” hired to help clean up The Double Deuce, one of the rowdiest bars in Missouri. The film has become a cult favorite over the years, and there have been various attempts at remaking the movie. Prime Video says the new take will star Gyllenhaal as a former UFC fighter who takes a job as a bouncer at a roadhouse in the Florida Keys.

Abbi Jacobson is calling out Amazon Prime Video over the cancellation of a shortened “A League of Their Own” Season 2.
The series’ star, co-creator, and executive producer took to Instagram to address the news that the slated final four episodes of “League” are no longer moving forward due to the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
“What luck I have had to get to tell these stories and play this character I love so much. What a rare thing in life,” Jacobson captioned. “And so I am sad today. To blame this cancellation on the strike, is bullshit and cowardly. But this post isn’t about all that. About all the ways this show has been put through the ringer. Not today.”
The “Broad City” alum continued, “This post here is about the special show I was lucky to make with so many incredibly talented artists and actors and writers and crew.

Prime Video Cancels 'A League of Their Own' Despite Season 2 Renewal in the Midst of Writers Strikes
Unfortunately, it’s two strikes and your out for the Prime Video series “A League of Their Own.” After a critically acclaimed first season on the Amazon service, the adaption of the iconic 1992 movie of the same name was canceled, but the streamer announced that it would get a four-episode second season before wrapping up. However, it has been announced that those plans have changed and that Prime Video would not be moving forward with the abbreviated Season 2 after all.

Despite doing well in its first season, Prime Video has sadly reversed its renewal of The Peripheral.
The change of heart likely stemmed from the dual strikes occurring across the industry.
The series starred Chloë Grace Moretz as Flynne Fischer, a woman who discovered a secret connection to an alternate reality as well as a dark future of her own.
What is one of the first of likely many strike-related cancellations, The Peripheral seemed to fare well on the streamer.
Each week, Twitter would be abuzz with theories and praise for the show, especially for the performances from Moretz and one of the lead antagonists, played by T'Nia Miller.
With the WGA on strike for over 100 days and SAG-AFTRA on strike for over a month, we expect there to be many similar cases of reversals when it comes to renewed series that hadn't already begun production.

Amazon is removing A League of Their Own from its scripted lineup.
The retail giant and streamer has reversed course and canceled the queer-themed reboot of Penny Marshall’s 1992 film after previously renewing the series for a four-episode second and final season. Sources say Sony Pictures Television, which produces the show, plans to shop League with the hopes that the series can find a new home for season two. Scripts for all four episodes of what was planned to be the conclusion of the series were completed before the Writers Guild of America went on strike May 2.
The decision to cancel the series from co-creators/showrunners Will Graham and Abbi Jacobson (who also starred) comes as Hollywood’s first dual strikes since the 1960s has brought production to a standstill. Graham and Jacobson fought to get the series a second season as Amazon and producers Sony Pictures Television negotiated to...

‘A League Of Their Own’ Canceled: Prime Video Not Proceeding With Second & Final Season Amid Strikes
Exclusive: Prime Video is not moving forward with the previously ordered second — and final — season of comedy-drama A League Of Their Own, co-created and starring Abbi Jacobson, Deadline has learned.
It joins fellow Prime Video/Amazon Studios hourlong freshman series The Peripheral, which also had its Season 2 renewal reversed.
As Deadline reported earlier today, both cancellations are believed to stem from the length of the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, which have delayed TV production, creating large gaps between seasons and making shows miss their target release dates.
In a story earlier this week, Deadline reported that there may be more series whose renewals could be rescinded or pending pickups not happen if the work stoppage stretches past Labor Day, with freshman series going into Season 2 the most vulnerable. There was a similar string of unrenewals during the pandemic.

Prime Video has canceled “The Peripheral,” despite the Chloë Grace Moretz-led sci-fi series receiving a renewal for a second season in February.
An individual with knowledge of the matter tells TheWrap that the cancelation stems from delays caused by the ongoing Writers’ Guild of America strike, which began on May 2, and SAG-AFTRA strike, which began on July 14. The individual noted that the series was originally intended to go into production this year for a release in 2024.
Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by William Gibson, the series hailed from “Westworld” creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan’s Kilter Films banner, who are under an overall deal at Amazon Studios. “The Peripheral” follows Flynne Fisher (Moretz), a woman trying to hold together the pieces of her broken family in a forgotten corner of tomorrow’s America. Amazon Studios Television head Vernon Sanders suggested that the company would be open to continuing their “A League of Their Own” series, despite its recent decision to renew the show for an abbreviated four-episode second season.
“I’m one of those people that believes that if magic happens and we get a great response, this doesn’t necessarily have to be the end,” Sanders told TheWrap. “It will totally depend on how it performs and how the cast and creators all decide they want to revisit it if they do. So let’s hope we get that big audience.”
He emphasized that the studio “loved” the show and that the conversation about bringing it back was a “tough one.”
“Doing a big ensemble period piece, at the scale and level of Season One was both really gratifying but challenging. And we had a conversation with the producers about how can...

This story about the production design of “A League of Their Own” first appeared in the Comedy Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Production designer Victoria Paul knows how much people love Penny Marshall’s “A League of Their Own”—a film that 31 years later, fans still relish quoting: “There’s no crying in baseball!” and “And how about Marla Hooch…what a hitter!” So when the production designer (who has worked on everything from “My Cousin Vinny” to “Breakdown” to “Bones”) was hired for Amazon Prime Video’s adaptation of the 1992 movie, she realized the best way forward was to take her cues from Marshall’s film. “We were all in awe of the movie,” Paul said. “It’s a classic, and we didn’t shy away from looking at how they did (their sets). We weren’t trying to disassociate ourselves from the movie at all.”

Getting caught up in a deadly kidnapping, being torn away from your loved ones and forced into witness protection, tracking down a serial killer of vulnerable young girls… none of the above exactly scream ‘Lol’, and yet they’ve all become the subject of British crime comedy-dramas in recent years. The “you’ve got to laugh” mentality is clearly in our national DNA, no matter how bleak the circumstances.

The BBC first announced it was making six-part comedy thriller Black Ops back in June 2021 – and boy is it worth the wait.
Created by Famalam’s BAFTA-winning duo of Gbemisola Ikumelo and Akemnji Ndifornyen, it follows two inexperienced Community Support Officers – Ikumelo plays Dom alongside The Wheel of Time’s Hammed Animashaun as Kay – who get recruited into a perilous undercover Met Police operation infiltrating a London drug gang.
There are so many elements that combine to make Black Ops a joyous must-watch:
1. You’ll Instantly Love The Characters
The sibling-like partnership between Dom and Kay makes us feel immediately at ease in their world. So when the enigmatic Di Clinton Blair covertly approaches them to join his “off the books” undercover operation in episode one, we’re invested in their story from the off.

The Rockford Peaches are set to return to Amazon Prime Video one last time.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, A League of Their Own is returning to the streaming service for a second and final season.
And it will be short.
The outlet alleges that A League of Their Own Season 2 will comprise just four episodes.
Amazon has not confirmed the renewal, but THR notes that deals are still being worked out.
As a result, we should expect a formal pickup when the deals are completed.
The road to renewal was reportedly complicated by renegotiations with Sony to lower the drama's licensing fee.
The cast also had to sign new deals because the season will be comprised of half the episodes of A League of Their Own Season 1.
While Amazon has not announced the pickup, it is set to be billed as a "limited series."

Abbi Jacobson and Will Graham’s “A League of Their Own” series on Amazon’s Prime Video will return for a shortened final season of four episodes, according to multiple reports.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Amazon made the decision after months of negotiations that included a reduction of the show’s licensing fee by Sony, who owns the rights to the movie. The streaming arm of the retail and tech company sought to lower the budget and production costs for a second season. Even a movie was considered for the show’s conclusion, according to THR sources.
Co-creator of the show Will Graham tweeted in response to the reports, adding onto a thread he began earlier Tuesday morning.

Amazon’s queer take on Penny Marshall’s beloved A League of Their Own will get one last at-bat.
The retail giant/streamer, following months of negotiations, has handed out a second and final season renewal for the series from showrunners Will Graham and Abbi Jacobson. The Sony Pictures Television-produced show will conclude with a four-episode final season. The news follows months of renegotiations with Sony to lower the show’s licensing fee, and the cast had to sign new deals, given the order is for half the episodes that were featured in season one, sources say.
Reps for Amazon and Sony declined to comment as deals have not yet been completed for what sources say will be billed as a “limited series.”
In the works since early 2018, Graham (Amazon’s recently launched Daisy Jones & The Six) recruited Jacobson (Broad City) for the more modern take on Marshall’s...

Ayo Edebiri took home the prize for best supporting performance in a new scripted series at the Independent Spirit Awards for her role in The Bear.
“I didn’t really prepare any remarks and my manager gave me a piece of paper,” Edebiri began her acceptance speech. “I just want to say, I’m really grateful. Yeah, this is really nice and very cool.”
She went on to say it was important for her to see a room — er, tent — full of people who look like and feel like her.
“I grew up, and there weren’t people who looked like me or felt like me,” Edebiri continued. “This is really nice because I’m in a room full of a lot of people, who I really admire and looked up to, but there’s also a lot of people who look like me and feel like me, and that’s really nice.

Exclusive: Black British culture is reaching a “sweet spot” and creatives no longer have to move to the U.S. to achieve stardom, according to the creators of BBC comedy-thriller Black Ops.
Speaking exclusively to Deadline as BBC Studios shops the show at the London TV Screenings, creator and producer Akemnji Ndifornyen said cultural touchstones such as Netflix’s Top Boy are “accessible to our American cousins like never before.”
“Black British culture is reaching this really sweet spot,” said Ndifornyen, who played Mr Fergusson in Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit. “[Americans] now understand that we’re not just ‘tea and crumpets’ but can really subvert their expectations.”
Alongside fellow Black Ops creator Gbemisola Ikumelo and star Hammed Animashaun, Ndifornyen branded the “one in, one out” Black talent experience in UK TV a thing of the past, partly because “we can go to the U.S. and come back with...

While sources tell Deadline that the social media post was done to mark the start of MLB’s 2023 Spring Training, one could understand why fans are interpreting its message differently.
It’s been more than six months since Season 1 of A League Of Their Own premiered on Prime Video with no official word on the show’s fate. There have been positive signs that that show, which has developed a devoted following, would get a second season.

One of Ireland’s most famous actors has taken a shot at one of Ireland’s most famous athletes. Liam Neeson told Men’s Health that he is no fan of UFC fighter Connor McGregor, going so far as to compare McGregor to a “little leprechaun.” McGregor, one of the highest-paid athletes in the world, is the first UFC fighter to hold UFC championships in two weight classes simultaneously.
“UFC I can’t stand,” Neeson said. “That to me is like a bar fight. I know the practitioners are like, ‘no, you’re wrong — the months of training we do …’ Why don’t you just grab a beer bottle and hit the other guy over the head? That’s the next stage of the UFC. I hate it.”
The actor continued, “That little leprechaun Conor McGregor, he gives Ireland a bad name. I know he’s fit, and I admire him for that.
