One of the greatest powers that films have is the ability to generate empathy. Even if we have a hard time understanding the issues that other people are dealing with, a great movie can open us up to someone else's experience. While some people go to the movies simply for escapism, films can be a tool for healing and learning.
Divorce is a topic that cinema has flirted with since the golden age of Hollywood, and classic films bravely took on these topics. Comedies like "His Girl Friday" and "The Awful Truth" dealt with non-traditional relationships, in which the couple has to consider the vows they want to make to each other. Although the 1970s saw many serious dramas about the legal proceedings of divorce, such as "Scenes From A Marriage" and "An Unmarried Woman," there have also been more humorous interpretations like "Something's Gotta Give" and "It's Complicated."

Released in 2015, Joy was yet another film from the team of director David O. Russell and star Jennifer Lawrence. It was also a genuinely bad, overwrought movie, with Lawrence completely miscast as Joy Mangano, inventor of the Miracle Mop. While Russell received the sole screenplay credit on the finished film, he had actually rewritten a script by Annie […]

Original ‘Joy’ Writer Talks About “Very Heartbreaking Experience” Working On David O. Russell’s Film
In the long list of David O. Russell films from the past couple of decades, including “American Hustle,” “Silver Linings Playbook,” and “The Fighter,” there are those that forget about “Joy,” his 2015 feature starring Jennifer Lawrence as Joy Mangano. The film did earn critical acclaim and even landed Lawrence another Oscar nomination. But there aren’t many that feel it is his best work.

Annie Mumolo was riding high off an Oscar nomination for “Bridesmaids” when 20th Century Fox and David O. Russell joined forces to tackle her screenplay for “Joy,” a biographical drama on Miracle Mop creator and self-made millionaire Joy Mangano. Mumolo only received a “story by” credit on the film when it was released, and she has never spoken out about what went down behind the scenes of “Joy” until now. In an interview with Variety to promote her upcoming comedy “Barb and Star,” Mumolo said the ordeal with Russell was “heartbreaking” and “tremendously scary.”
“Oh boy. That was a toughie. It’s a tough business,” Mumolo said. “Everything that happened with ‘Joy’ and the making of the actual movie is a movie in itself. I don’t know what I’m allowed to say.”

They’re more than friends, they’re family. That’s how Annie Mumolo and Kristen Wiig, the writers and stars of “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar,” see not just their creative relationship but their connection that spans decades. “I think it’s like the lightning bolt of finding a marriage partner,” says Mumolo. “I feel lucky that I have Kristen in my life. When you find someone you can laugh like that with, it’s such a healing.”
No surprise, Wiig feels the same: “We always joke that we’re each other’s creative wives,” she says.

Jennifer Lawrence is no stranger when it comes to portraying nuanced female characters, and now she's gearing up for the role of another complicated woman: Arlyne Brickman, the mob girl turned FBI informant. Her new part is based on the colorful true story of Brickman's life captured in Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Teresa Carpenter's 1992 biography Mob Girl. While the film's release date is under wraps, we know that Lawrence will star as Brickman and produce alongside director Paolo Sorrentino. And we know that it'll be one hell of a story to tell - Brickman has lived a rather lurid and eventful life full of grit and shady dealings.
Arlyne Brickman's Early Life
Brickman spent 40 years hanging around mobsters. Her story started in 1934 when she was born in the Lower East Side of New York to a Jewish racketeer and one-time chorus girl. In her teenage years, she idolized Virginia Hill,...

It’s the weekend which many film fans have circled on their calendars with the premiere of Bradley Cooper‘s directorial debut, the fourth edition of “A Star Is Born.” Cooper had worked for years to develop the film, serving as the film’s star (opposite Lady Gaga), director, co-producer, co-writer, and he co-authored two of the film’s songs as well. Cooper, who has worked with some of the finest film directors around, such as Clint Eastwood and David O. Russell, obviously has picked up from them how to incorporate the many elements that go into making a film.
Cooper, who made his feature acting debut in 2001’s “Wet Hot American Summer,” found his stardom grow along with his filmography. He is one of only 10 men who have been nominated for acting Oscars three years in a row. He also earned a fourth Academy Award nomination for producing Best Picture nominee “American Sniper.

In Sweden, decluttering is a life and death situation. Get organized in life, so your stuff isn’t a burden when you go.
That’s the ethos behind the Scandinavian cleaning ritual of döstädning — a combination of the Swedish words for death and cleaning — laid out in a new home organization guide by Margareta Magnusson. The 80-something artist’s book, The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning, will be released in the U.S. in January and lays out the somewhat morbid process that’s already common in her home country.

The master of jet-setting recently released a by-the-numbers roundup of her year in travel for 2016 in a new post on her app, and a few of the stats are pretty surprising (and impressive!).
To start, Jenner, 21, says she flew 162,603 miles in 2016. (That’s equal to circling the earth a little over 6.5 times.) A few of those trips included first-time visits to spots like Barcelona, Rome, Vail, Washington D.C., and Salt Lake City. And who could forget her vacation to Turks and Caicos to ring in little sister Kylie’s 19th birthday?...

American Airlines is offering you a cheaper ticket, but it’ll cost you.
The airline announced today that it is introducing a Basic Economy fare in ten markets starting in February that will be similar to the one that United Airlines recently unveiled. While this lower price ticket offers the same in-flight services, there’s one benefit that’s notably missing: access to the overhead bin.
“One personal carry-on item that fits under the seat (such as a purse or small backpack) is allowed,” a press release on their website reads. “No overhead bin luggage may be brought on board.

Travel + Leisure recently released its list of the Best Places to Travel in 2017, and the honorees might surprise you.
Mixed in among the stunning tropical islands (Bermuda, Hawaii, a Cambodian archipelago) and expected European capitals (Oslo, Helsinki, Belfast) are several more accessible American cities. Philadelphia, for example, is “worth revisiting” since that middle school trip to the Liberty Bell.
“Philly is coming off a high-profile couple of years, between hosting Pope Francis and the DNC and being the first U.S. city inducted into the Organization of World Heritage Cities,” the list notes. It’s also got a growing population of young people,...

Joy Mangano, inventor of the Miracle Mop and the inspiration behind the 2015 Jennifer Lawrence biopic Joy, is releasing a new line of luggage, and it’s everything your travel routine has been missing.
Her TuffTech Luggage is more than just a pretty face. Features like”SpinBall” wheels that can rotate 360 degrees ensure you’re never awkwardly pushing and pulling as you race to your gate in the airport, while the material, infused with the same materials as a bulletproof vest, can withstand that inevitable tumble down the luggage carousel.

Traveling around the holidays is always a complicated feat, compounded by traffic, airport congestion and, of course, grandma holding you up to sneak that last box of leftovers into your carry-on. But if you plan ahead and try to travel at certain off-hours, you might just get through this holiday weekend without stress . . . well, without delay, anyway.

Jazz Age legend Zelda Fitzgerald is a character ripe for the big-screen treatment. A novelist and socialite who shot to fame during the early 1900s, her life and career often inspired the work of her significant other, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and it’s fair to say that the pair were the closest thing you’ll get to a power couple for their time.
We now have confirmation that that story will indeed unfold on the silver screen, with Jennifer Lawrence attached to the part of Zelda Fitzgerald. The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop, revealing that Fitzgerald is the latest real-life figure that has caught the eye of the Oscar-winner, who is hot off portraying business magnate Joy Mangano. Inferno‘s Ron Howard is said to be developing the biopic as a potential directing vehicle, overseeing a script penned by Emma Frost (The White Queen). Bill Brand’s Hsn isn’t just pushing Lancome cosmetics and Hewlett-Packard computers these days — his ties to Hollywood include a Melissa McCarthy clothing line, lots of Wendy Williams fashion and several big-sellers from Joy Mangano, whose life story was recently portrayed by Jennifer Lawrence in “Joy.” “Entertainment plays a big role at Hsn,” the company president told us. Brand’s former Home Shopping Network will spend the next three full days marketing Disney’s “Alice Through the Looking Glass,” selling more than 200 different exclusive products designed around the film. Jennifer Lawrence’s turn as the Magic Mop inventor deserves a second look, while Poehler and Fey are on good form as siblings, and Alice Lowe and Dolly Wells equally so as poetic impostors
After a hot streak with ticket buyers, critics and Oscar voters, David O Russell was frozen out with Joy (Fox, 12). Applause was muted to inaudible, while only Jennifer Lawrence scored any awards recognition for a film built as a chattering shrine to her star power. Future audiences will, I hope, remember it as a film that deserved better. Built and buffed like a multistoreyed great American novel, yet with a surging, people-watching, restlessness best suited to the cinema, Joy is a messy marvel, perhaps the most prodigious child yet of the arranged marriage between Russell’s busy, eccentric storytelling style and classic Hollywood form.

Welcome to the 88th Academy Awards from the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, where the film industry’s best and whitest gather for the annual celebration of motion picture achievements. It’s been a tight race this year, with several contests still too close to call.
The Revenant is the favourite to win best picture heading into the ceremony, with 12 nominations, however don’t be surprised if Mad Max: Fury Road, The Big Short, or Spotlight spring a surprise.
The backdrop to this evening’s proceedings – along with the foreground and everything above it, below it, to the left and to the right of it – has been dominated by the #OscarsSoWhite outrage, which erupted back in January when, for the second year in a row, all 20 acting nominees were white.
The ensuing maelstrom triggered jerky knees in the Academy, which has moved to alter its composition and the way it does business going forward.
Time will tell. Meanwhile...

Here's Murtada speculating very early on the 2017 Oscar race.
There’s usually a real life person in the best actress lineup. It’s not as prevalent as it is in best actor - 4 this year. But we do have Joy Mangano (Jennifer Lawrence). Last year there were Jane Hawking (Felicity Jones) and Cheryl Strayed (Reese Witherspoon). Recently we got everyone from Philomena Lee (Judi Dench) to Marilyn Monroe (Michelle Williams) and Edith Piaf (Marion Cotillard) and most famously The Queen (Helen Mirren) and her 80s nemesis Margaret Thatcher (Meryl Streep). Now we have two more possible candidates for the 2017 Oscar race as two interesting biopics were announced this week with two actresses well known to the Academy. French writer Colette (to be played by Keira Knightley) and Jesus disciple Mary Magdalene (Rooney Mara).
Colette in 1920s
Colette is the more intriguing figure, at least to this non-believer. Born in 1873 she was a journalist,...

The real-life Joy Mangano couldn't be happier for Jennifer Lawrence, who is receiving a lot of awards show attention for her performance in Joy. Last Thursday, Lawrence, 25, received her fourth Academy Award nomination for playing the Miracle Mop inventor. She also won the Golden Globe for best actress in motion picture, musical or comedy. "She so deserves it," Mangano, 59, told People Tuesday at a party celebrating her 20th anniversary as a Good Housekeeping Seal holder and her appearance on the cover of the magazine's February issue. David O. Russell’s Joy may not have hit the dizzying hits of, say, Silver Linings Playbook or even American Hustle, but that hasn’t quelled Jennifer Lawrence’s enthusiasm to continue working with the director’s creative team.
That’s according to The Hollywood Reporter, revealing that The Hunger Games star is in line to take on the title role in Marita. Pitched by American Hustle co-writer Eric Warren Singer, the project has set up shop at Sony Pictures, and it’s understood the studio is eager to set the wheels in motion as soon as possible.
It’s a role that’ll have Lawrence portray another real-life woman following her turn as famed entrepreneur Joy Mangano, only this time swapping out novel domestic inventions for a daring CIA mission. Headlining the feature as Marita Lorenz, the actress is attached to the role of the German-born mistress of Fidel Castro,...

The 88th annual Academy Award nominations were announced Thursday morning and just about everyone has an opinion. Although most of the nominations are what we expected, there were still some surprises and a few snubs that got the internet chatting. Here is a list of our ten biggest reactions to the 2016 Academy Award nominations.
10. Inside Out Is both Snubbed and Surprised
Disney/Pixar’s summer smash hit was loved by critics and audiences everywhere, and not only seemed to be a lock for Best Animated Feature, but Best Picture as well. The film was rightfully nominated for Best Animated Feature, but some were surprised that it didn’t make the cut for Best Picture, especially when this year’s contender pool is supposedly on the weaker side. Pixar has been nominated for Best Picture before with both Up and Toy Story 3, but Inside Out didn’t receive enough love to make it this year.

Only days after winning a Golden Globe, Jennifer Lawrence scored her fourth Academy Award acting nomination Thursday for her turn in Joy, loosely based on the life of Miracle Mop creator Joy Mangano. It was the only nomination the movie received, ending a dazzling run for director David O. Russell, whose last three films before Joy — American Hustle, Silver Linings Playbook and The Fighter — were all mentioned for best director, as well as best picture, among other top noms. Lawrence told The Hollywood Reporter shortly after learning of her nomination that she probably cares about awards more than Russell

There are some issues with this morning's Oscar nominees. There isn't a single acting nominee of color (!), one of the worst Bond themes of all time earned a nomination (yep, "The Writing's on the Wall"), and Carol, the #1 rated movie of 2015 according to Metacritic, was spared an Oscar nomination. Fortunately, a few categories are incredibly exciting thanks to stiff competition. For my money, the greatest category in this year's running is Best Actress, which features five distinguished and varied performances from actresses at the peak of their craft. To torture ourselves, we've decided to rank them. 5. Jennifer Lawrence, Joy You can't blame Jennifer Lawrence for the majority of Joy's woes. Though it's a pleasant chronicle of Miracle Mop inventor Joy Mangano's rise to fame, that's also all it is. Lawrence plays Mangano as a plucky, slightly sarcastic, and consummately endearing character, which makes you think director David O. Russell simply told Lawrence,...

Many of this season's critical darlings earned Academy Award nominations Thursday morning. But the Oscars always manage to throw in a few surprises - and this year was no different. Veteran English actress Charlotte Rampling picked up a surprise Best Actress nomination for 45 Years. Although the star has been earning critical raves for decades, it's the first Oscar nomination for the 69-year-old, who portrays a woman whose long-term marriage is suddenly on the rocks. She will compete against Cate Blanchett for Carol, Brie Larson for Room, Saoirse Ronan for Brooklyn and Jennifer Lawrence for Joy. Lawrence's nomination was also a...
