Ten years ago, Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer wrote themselves a web series about their close friendship and the glorious paradox of being dirtbag ladies in New York City. With Jacobson playing the game Mary Tyler Moore character to Glazer’s wilder Rhoda, “Broad City” was frank, incisive and, most of all, funny as hell. But it still took years for the idea of a TV version to catch on at a network that understood their vision and the apparently confusing concept that there could be more than one show about women on TV — or per broadcaster.
“We were forever compared to ‘Girls,’ which is understandable if you haven’t seen either show,” Jacobson deadpanned recently over breakfast in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, tucked in a booth alongside Glazer. “At Fox, it was like, ‘We already have “New Girl.”’ That was a real sentence!”
But the two knew they had something special.

Rob Huebel has recruited some live ones for his new Comedy Central pilot. The sketch comedian’s “Do You Want to See a Dead Body?” has grabbed Adam Scott (“Parks and Recreation”) and Terry Crews (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”) to be its first guests, TheWrap has learned. “Dead Body” is a half-hour scripted pilot that follows Huebel as he embarks on a bizarre quest/adventure to see a dead body with a different celebrity guest each week. Broad City, Season 2, Episode 10, “St. Mark’s”
Written by Abbi Jacobson & Ilana Glazer
Directed by Nicholas Jasenovec
Airs Wednesdays at 10:30pm Et on Comedy Central
This has been an extremely strong season of Broad City, and though this episode is a somewhat strange one to use as a finale, it ultimately feels like an inspired choice. We have no sense of closure with Ilana and Lincoln’s relationship, which was anticipated. No arc is particularly remarked upon or addressed. It is essentially just an episode of Abbi and Ilana walking down the street in New York City as they decide what to do for Ilana’s 23rd birthday. It feels as defiant as the beautiful moment before the title card when a man walks by and tells them to smile, so they turn around and force a fake smile with their middle fingers.
The opening sequence is a brilliant display of direction and production,...

A few thoughts on tonight's "Broad City" finale — and season 2 as a whole — coming up just as soon as I get distracted by this business Guido... The only thing that I didn't absolutely love about "St. Mark's" was the fact that it's the last episode of "Broad City" we're going to get in 2015. Even by the standards of the 10-episode season that's becoming the new normal in cable, this season seemed to just fly by, perhaps because I was having so much damn fun watching it. I would rather Abbi and Ilana keep the quality high rather than being overextended (and even with only 10 episodes, they did turn out one semi-dud with the largely forgettable party boat outing), but I'm going to miss those two and the explosive laughter they so often generated this season. And it's not even like the show took some huge creative leap after season 1. That...

When I first became aware of Jake Johnson's work, it was in the film "Paper Heart," and it's a very canny performance, an interesting one to see as somebody's first work. In the film, directed by Nicholas Jasenovec, Johnson played Nicholas Jasenovec, the director of a documentary about Charlyne Yi and Michael Cera falling in love. I saw it first at Sundance, then ended up moderating a Comic-Con panel for the film with Johnson, Cera, Yi, and Jasenovec all participating. Over the course of those encounters that year, I saw a good deal of Johnson, and he invariably made me laugh like an idiot at least once per conversation. "New Girl" appears to have been the thing that finally opened the door for Johnson in terms of audiences understanding him and seeing him showcased properly. In the pilot, he was paired with Damon Wayans Jr. and Max Greenfield as his two roommates,...

On Monday, we presented you with the 9 Most Devastatingly Sad Documentaries of All Time, a list that was topped by Dear Zachary. It seems like, whenever we mention Dear Zachary and how devastatingly sad it is, a few people see it as a challenge. They think, "Nooooo. How sad can it really be?"
It's not a challenge you will win, folks. Dear Zachary will pummel you every single time. But, if you're recently watched it, or for another reason feel as though the world has stacked its deck against you, we've got you covered. Choose one or more among these 9 documentaries, and the air that life knocked out of you will re-enter and flow through your lungs again. Or at least, put a smile on your face and a lump in your throat.
9. Paper Heart: Finally the hipsters have gone full circle and consumed themselves like an ouroborus recycled from an old Pac-Man t-shirt.

Max Winkler, known for his work on one of my favorite web series Clark and Michael, premiered his debut feature at Tiff this year. The comedy/drama Ceremony stars Michael Angarano (Snow Angels, Gentleman Broncos), Uma Thurman (Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction), and Reece Thompson (Rocket Science, Assassination of a High School President).
Sam David (Angarano) is planning a weekend trip with his best friend, who hasn’t talked with for over a year, Marshall (Thompson). When they get to their vacation location, the truth comes out that Sam actually planned the whole trip to get closer to an ex-girlfriend who is getting married that weekend, Zoe (Thurman).
Right off the bat, Winkler sets a very hyper-realistic tone. The dialogue is a little too perfect and Sam is a character that acts way older than he is. Once one gets used to the style, the film really gets in a groove...

A conversation with comedian Derek Waters as he prepares for his largest show ever at the San Francisco International Film Festival.
Weston: Why the San Francisco Film Festival for a ‘Night with Derek Waters’ event?
Derek: Well, I chose San Francisco because I got asked to come here and I said, “Yes please.” Yeah, and in all seriousness it’s really exciting because “Wholphin” is the best DVD ever and that’s how Brent and I met ‘cause he asked me to do their show and it’s just cool, ‘cause none of these videos were really made for anyone to see who wasn’t sitting in front of a computer.
Seeing all these people sitting in front of their computers in a theater is gonna be pretty cool. I should have given everyone a laptop, sit down and just played it on the laptop, not on the screen. It’s a big deal tonight,...

The year-end Fave Five brigade continues with director Nicholas Jasenovec, who picked up a screenwriting award at Sundance this year for the comedy Paper Heart, starring Charlyne Yi and Michael Cera. The 30-year-old director will return to Park City in January to debut his short film Para Fuera, a documentary portrait of noted cardiologist Dr. Richard J. Bing on his 100th birthday. So what were Nicholas's five favorites of 2009? Read on!

One look at the filmmaker names below, and it appears as if the Sundance alumni have come out in droves. We find a known variety of filmmakers such as Spike Jonze (Being John Malcovich), Ira Sachs (Married Life), Nicholas Jasenovec (Paper Hearts), James Franco and the Zellner bros. who have dabbled this year in the short form while working in between their feature film projects. - I'd be willing to bet that its the commonly available digital filmmaking and editing technologies that is the core reason for the record breaking amount of short films submitted (6,092) to Sundance this year. Personally, you'll only hear me complain that watching movies is a tough job come day 8 of a major film festival, but imagine being one the programmers having to plow threw hundreds of pieces of crap in order to find something worth watching over a second time. Chicago – Some actors are so good that it’s easy to take their work for granted. Take Michael Cera, the veteran child actor-turned-unlikely teen heartthrob. From his breakout work in “Arrested Development,” to his crowd-pleasing performances in “Superbad” and “Juno,” Cera has created a comic persona as indelible as Woody Allen’s.
The sweetly neurotic vulnerability he exudes is so authentic, it’s easy for audiences to confuse the actor with the characters he regularly portrays. Is he a brilliant actor, or is he simply playing himself (which itself is no easy feat)? Such questions lie at the deceptive heart of Nicholas Jasenovec’s intriguing and infuriating romantic comedy.
DVD Rating: 3.0/5.0

Rating (out of 5): ***½
How long can you play "adorable" before it curdles? I suspect each viewer will have his own limit.
For me, Charlyne Yi, whose adorable quotient is somewhere off the charts, hasn't come close to souring yet. From the first moments right through the finale of Paper Heart, the film that she stars in and has co-written (with director Nicholas Jasenovec), I just wanted to pull her to me, hug her ever so gently, tell her I love her and make everything aw-wight. Of course, she would run fleeing from this, as she probably would from most people's declarations. Which is part of her charm -- and believability. I am unfamiliar with her stand-up routine (we see a little of it in the film), but I venture to guess that this persona she shows us – sweet and innocent yet not that naïve – is...

The Sundance Institute have announced the short films selected to screen at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. Movieline was the first to break the story, but the press release is now public. Some of the notable films include Spike Jonze’s robot love short film I’m Here which stars Andrew Garfield, Herbert White, a short film he directed earlier this year by James Franco, who is already at the fest with his feature-length film Howl, Rory Kennedy’s The Fence, as well as short films from Nicholas Jasenovec, Ira Sachs, and Patrik Eklund. This year the Festival's Short Film Program comprises 70 short films from U.S. and international filmmakers selected from 6,092 submissions up 8% over 2009. So, yes, for the most part the program is made up of filmmakers you've never heard of -- but that's exactly why you should care. The Sundance Film Festival's shorts program has long been established as...

Dave here with Tuesday's report from the London Film Festival, and it's been my best day yet. Excited?
What is love? It's an age-old question, and you can probably guarantee someone's already made some sort of documentary on the subject. But that doesn't stop filmmaker Nicholas Jasenovec and comedienne Charlyne Yi from giving it their own shot. Paper Heart is a self-conscious quirky film that mixes actual documentary footage of Yi's journey around America interviewing various people on how they'd define love with a strange interpolated story of Jasenovec (actually played by Jake Johnson) picking up on the romantic seeds between Yi and Michael Cera (as 'himself') and filming every aspect of their blossoming relationship to see if Yi finally succumbs to this mysterious thing called love. This latter thread is really quite strange in how transparently fake it is, and it seems quite unnecessary when the interviewees provide much more entertainment,...

Director: Nicholas Jasenovec Writer(s): Nicholas Jasenovec, Charlyne Yi Starring: Charlyne Yi, Michael Cera Comedian and actress Charlyne Yi (Charlyne Yi) is a skeptic – heck, she is a downright curmudgeon – when it comes to love; however, she is curious enough about all the hype that she decides to embark upon a quest to find out more about love.Charlyne joins forces with director and friend Nicholas Jasenovec (Jake Johnson) and his documentary crew, as they journey across the United States interviewing people of all ages, ethnicities and spiritual backgrounds about their experiences with love. We know from the get-go that Charlyne will not be easily convinced, even if love were to walk right up and slap her across the face – and this right here is where MichaelCera (Michael Cera) comes in. Charlyne meets Michael at a party and their friendship slowly simmers into a romantic relationship throughout the course of Charlyne’s documentary.

Well, however you feel about kid sensations taking the leap, the other Hasbro toy line/TV show has jumped from plastic case to big screen with G.I. Reeling in around 56 million so far, the overly pumped action movie from Stephen Sommers brought in a lot of people, though of course with its 175-million-dollar budget the studio will probably worry their pants off until they can reach it. With somewhat more positive buzz than practically everyone (including this writer) expected, let’s see how this sucker measures up when it goes up against District 9 this coming Friday.

Chicago – When confronted with the observation that her body language closed up whenever her love history was examined in the just released “Paper Heart,” the film’s star Charlyne Yi posed exactly like that in a publicity picture.

There are documentaries, and there are comedies made to look like documentaries, and Paper Heart is both. Conceived by comedian Charlyne Yi and filmmaker Nicholas Jasenovec, it combines elements of reality and fiction in an amusing, meta-referential way, though one's enjoyment of it may ultimately come down to one's enjoyment of Yi as a performer.
It is set up as a documentary about Charlyne's search to determine whether true love really exists. She doesn't think it does -- or, at the very least, she thinks she's not capable of feeling it. (I can't imagine anything sadder than being unable to experience romantic love, but that's beside the point.) To investigate, Charlyne travels the country to interview biologists, old married couples, and Las Vegas wedding chapel officiators who dress as Elvis. Those segments are real, like you'd find in any documentary.

From MTV.Com: I walked into "Paper Heart" knowing nothing about it and walked out feeling both charmed and conflicted. The picture is presented as a low-budget documentary about a low-budget documentary being made by Charlyne Yi (the cute stoned girlfriend in "Knocked Up"). The subject is love: Yi doesn't believe in it, but she wants to find out why so many people do. So she and her producer, Nicholas Jasenovec, and cameraman Jay Hunter set off around the country to learn more.
As they traipse from Amarillo to Albuquerque, and Atlanta to Palm Springs to New York City, we watch Yi bringing her microphone to bear on all sorts of everyday people. An old woman tells her love is a lightning bolt. A college professor says it's a molecular event. She talks to bikers and psychics and high-school sweethearts, and gets a funny scene out of an encounter with...

Paper Heart
Directed by: Nicholas Jasenovec
Cast: Charlyne Yi, Jake Johnson, Michael Cera
Running Time: 1 hr 30 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: August 14, 2009
Plot: Uncertain of whether she can ever love someone, Charlyene sets out to interview people across the country on their own thoughts of the all important L-word. In the process she meets Michael, (Cera), which causes her to reconsider her mindset.
Who’s It For? Even if this doesn’t gain a following similar to other “quirky comedies” like Juno, it will still wrangle in some type of hip audience that like their stories about love to be modern, real, and feature tons of American Apparel hoodies.
Expectations: From my one glimpse at the trailer, I feared that while I would likely be warmed by Paper Heart I would probably start choking from the cuteness and maybe sue the film’s unbearable “indie” soundtrack for causing deafness.

Michael Cera and Charlyne Yi in "Paper Heart"
Photo: Overture Films
I walked into "Paper Heart" knowing nothing about it and walked out feeling both charmed and conflicted.
She talks...

Prepare to see stars in your local arthouse as the summer turns to fall. Brad Pitt, Charlize Theron, Drew Barrymore will all grace celluloid in the coming months. There are new films from star directors -- Tarantino! Campion! Soderbergh! Coen brothers! Even the new documentaries are driven by stars -- Michael Moore's "Capitalism: A Love Story," LeBron James' "More Than a Game" and Anna Wintour's "The September Issue." And then, as Matt Singer will tell you, there are breakout stars who you should start catching up with now. In between, there's epic animation ("Ponyo" and "9"), an astounding array of asskicking ("Ong Bak 2" and "Black Dynamite") and Lars von Trier's "Antichrist," proving there's there's just about something for everyone this fall at the multiplex. (And if not there, make sure to check out what films you can catch in the comfort of your own home on demand,...

"Paper Heart," directed by Nicholas Jasenovec, is out this Friday. I've been chatting it up a lot here on the blog, as it was one of my favorite flicks from Sundance in January. I'm also an unapologetic "Arrested Development" fanboy, so anything involving Michael Cera (or the rest of the Bluth family) is immediately on my radar. I never even made the connection that Charlyne Yi was the stoner chick from "Knocked Up" until after I saw "Paper Heart."
But I digress. I'm here today to share a couple handfuls of stills from "Paper Heart." It's a part-documentary/part-mockumentary feature in which Yi travels around, interview people on how they define love. These non-fiction bits are crosscut with dramatized scenes from Yi's relationship with Cera. A funny, fun time, and a sweet alternative to the loud, blaring noise of your typical summer blockbuster.

Los Angeles-born comedienne Charlyne Yi seemed so adorably unassuming as one of Seth Rogen's stoner buds in "Knocked Up," in which she memorably comments to the pregnant Katherine Heigl: "You must be angry at the baby whenever it steals your food, huh?" But the 23-year-old funny girl couldn't spend her life as a couch potato if she tried, since she's also busy as a performance artist, musician, writer and painter -- sometimes all at the same time, depending on which of her live comedy shows you've experienced. In director Nicholas Jasenovec's feature debut "Paper Heart," (which Yi co-wrote, executive produced, composed music and designed puppets for) Yi plays herself, sort of. Not so much a mockumentary as it is a doc-narrative hybrid, the film sees her on a quest to discover if there is such a thing as true love, which she doesn't believe in. Traveling with...

I haven't really highlighted it here, but Mean Magazine and Microsoft have started producing a series of comedic digital shorts in which today's most popular actors remix classic movies. Previous entries have taken on "Tron" (with Cheech & Chong), "Sid & Nancy" (with Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and "Point Break" (with members of "Human Giant" and "Reno 911!").
The latest clip serves up some "Dirty Dancing," with help from "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" star Channing Tatum and Charlyne Yi, whose documentary/mockumentary "Paper Heart" opens this week. Notably, the short is written by Yi and "Heart" director Nicholas Jasenovec. Enjoy.

A new behind the scenes featurette for the comedy/documentary Paper Heart has been released online. Directed by Nicholas Jasenovec, the film stars Charlyne Yi (Knocked Up) and Michael Cera and is slated to open in limited release in New York and Los Angeles on August 7. In Paper Heart, Yi embarks on a quest across America to make a documentary about the one subject she doesn’t fully understand: Love. Michael Cera becomes the object of her affection. Weaving together reality and fantasy, Paper Heart combines elements of documentary and traditional storytelling to bring a fresh perspective to the modern romance.

"Paper Heart" was one of my favorite Sundance '09 screenings. It's a very touching, off-beat little film, part-documentary and part-fiction. Charlyne Yi goes on a cross-country search for the meaning of love with director Nicholas Jasenovec (portrayed in the movie by Jake Johnson) in tow. Interspersed with a series of random interviews are dramatized scenes of Yi's real-life relationship with "Year One" star Michael Cera.
The below video offers a look behind the scenes at how some of these ideas came together. This is the sort of movie that you walk out of with a smile on your face and a newfound lightness in your step. "Paper Heart" opens on August 7, so mark your calendar lovebirds.

Echoing the sentiments of Foreigner's classic cornball hit but without all the melodrama, Charlyne Yi wanted to know what love was, and she wanted some people to show her. In her new film Paper Heart, the actress-writer turned her initial plans for a documentary on the "L" word into a narrative hybrid. Together with director and co-writer Nicholas Jasenovec, Yi, playing a character named -- yes Charlyne -- sets off cross country to get to the meaning of what love is. She interviews happily married couples, celebrities, and divorce lawyers (among others) and tries to overcome her own pessimism about love. I spoke to Yi from the Just For Laughs Comedy Conference and Film Festival in Montreal earlier this week, and asked her about her views on love (then and now), her co-star Michael Cera, and how her film evolved...

Paper Heart Directed by Nicholas Jasenovec A peculiar blend of romantic comedy, documentary, and mockumentary, Nicholas Jasevonec's Paper Heart is a charming, unique concoction that, to its detriment, doesn't offer very much to linger on once the lights go up. The film "begins" as a straight documentary, with its principal subject (comedian Charlyne Yi, playing "herself") travelling the Us in search of cogent evidence of the existence of love, a concept she herself is skeptical about. In between the interviews with real-life subjects (most of them couples who have been together for decades, imparting their wisdom upon Yi), Yi meets Michael Cera, and they quickly form a close bond, one that becomes complicated by the constant presence of Jasenovec (played onscreen by Jake Johnson) and the rest of the documentary crew, who, for the sake of consistency, decide they must capture every moment of their increasingly intimate relationship. Paper Heart...

Paper Heart is a quirky hybrid of improvised fiction and outlined documentary about discovering true love. The rare combination of genres is clever, but is as awkward as its cast. It played in competition at the Sundance Film Festival, which seems like just the sort of audience to embrace this oddball indie.
Los Angeles comedienne Charlyne Yi doesn’t believe in love or that she’s capable of feeling it, so she embarks on a road trip across the country with director Nicholas Jasenovec (played by Jake Johnson) to learn how others perceive the emotion. Yi discusses the chemistry of coupling with university professors, high school seniors, actual seniors, and an Elvis impersonator, who all give equally vague answers about what it means to them.
The interviews include heartfelt shares that refreshingly aren’t mocked or commented on by the documentarians. Though sometimes their sweet stories are reenacted by hand-made puppets in two dimensional sets.

One of the cooler movies I saw this year at Sundance was director Nicholas Jasenovec's "Paper Heart," a sort of fiction/documentary hybrid that follows comedienne Charlyne Yi and her search for the meaning of love. Interspersed between on-camera interviews with real people are dramatized scenes of Yi's real-life relationship with actor Michael Cera. It's all very clever and meta, and you'll get to see it for yourself when the movie hits theaters on August 7.
Now I'm here to tell you lucky San Diego Comic-Con attendees that Yi will be appearing alongside Jasenovec and Jake Johnson (who plays Jasenovec in the movie) for a July 26 panel. Next week's San Diego Comic Con is being pitched as a battle between the geeks and the girls -- at least on Thursday, when a panel for The Twilight Saga: New Moon is expected to draw thousands of teen girls, while a panel for James Cameron's Avatar is expected to draw thousands of geeks of all ages. In the upcoming comedy Paper Heart, not only do stars Charlyne Yi and Michael Cera play themselves, but director Nicholas Jasenovec casts an actor to play his own stand-in, who directs Yi on a voyage of romantic self-discovery. It's a very meta juggling act, but one that's a perfect fit for Yi, the alternative comedienne who stole scenes in Judd Apatow's Knocked Up.
As the film plays at Laff this week, I sat down with Jasenovec (pictured here, at bottom-left, with his cast) to get the lowdown on his chemistry with Yi, the behind-the-scenes incidents that changed the film, and the double-edged sword that came from the film's hyped reception this year at Sundance. And no, I didn't send an actor to play myself in the interview.
