This coming holiday season, many glasses raised in Hollywood may be filled with spiritless spirits. Stars are jumping into the nonalcoholic adult beverage market with their own brands; sales are up dramatically in the 395 million sector (rising 20.6 percent between August 2021 and August 2022, according to market research company NielsenIQ); and a growing list of celebs are speaking out about alcohol-free, sober and sober-curious lifestyles (Ben Affleck and wife Jennifer Lopez, Anne Hathaway, Chrissy Teigen, Drew Barrymore and Kit Harington among them). Also driving demand is a pandemic-fueled societal focus on wellness.
“We are at the beginning of a new era of social drinking,” trumpets Christopher Lackner, co-founder of Jeng, a maker of CBD-infused, alcohol-free canned cocktails (including a Jeng & Tonic, and a Paloma). “Now that there are high-quality alternatives, it’s no longer difficult or awkward to be sober. In fact, it’s quite a treat.

A film project called “Brilliance” produced by Will Smith and his Westbrook Studios and set at Paramount has taken a step forward. The studio is in talks with “Ms. Marvel” filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy to direct the film, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
Though “Brilliance” has been floating around for years, with Paramount optioning the script back in 2019 and Smith involved for years prior to that, Obaid-Chinoy coming aboard as a director is a new development. And Smith, who has not made a film since the infamous Oscars slap earlier this year ahead of his Best Actor win, is still attached to produce via his company Westbrook Studios alongside Jon Mone and Ryan Shimazaki.
Though Smith was at one point attached to star in the film, the individual says that he is not formally committed to star in “Brilliance” at this stage.

Will Smith has been hired on to star in the film adaptation of the Marcus Sakey novel Brilliance. Akiva Goldsman will write the script and co-produce alongside Smith. This will be their fourth film together, after I, Robot, I Am Legend, and Hancock. Here’s the synopsis, courtesy of Deadline:
If 1% of the world’s children were born with powerful gifts, how would society adapt to them? The Brilliance novel trilogy is set in a future where non-neurotypical people — demonized by society as “twists” or “abnorms” — are threatening the status quo of the “normal” population with their unique gifts. They are officially labeled as “Brilliants” and are carefully tracked by the government.
And here’s a rundown of the character Smith will be playing:

David Koepp has a rather solid CV as a director, including Secret Window with Johnny Depp, the underrated ghost story Stir Of Echoes, and the really fun Joseph Gordon-Levitt bike messenger action film Premium Rush. He’s also had a hand in other notable Hollywood hits (and flops) including Carlito’s Way, The Shadow, Snake Eyes, Zathura, Panic Room, Death Becomes Her, and many, many more. He’s had a fascinating career.

Good People
Written for the screen by Kelly Masterson
Directed by Henrik Ruben Genz
USA, 2014
Tom and Anna Wright (James Franco and Kate Hudson) are a financially-struggling American couple giving UK life a try. The money from a robbery-gone-wrong ends up in their basement and they make the ill-fated decision to hold onto it, unaware that the cash will bring two separate criminal gangs and a worn police detective charging into their lives.
Good People plays out like a combination of A Simple Plan and Shallow Grave, though it has neither the cold irony of the former nor the sweaty shiftiness of the latter. Still, director Henrik Ruben Genz’s stateside debut is a capable thriller with sequences of strong suspense.
The opening scene may in fact be the strongest. Jack Witkowski (Sam Spruell) and crew prepare to rob a stash of heroin from drug importer Khan (Omar Sy). Genz...

When Will Smith unexpectedly dropped out of Legendary Pictures and Universal Pictures’ Brilliance, the studios were left scrambling to find a replacement. For a while, that replacement appeared to be Oscar winner Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club), who had been approached by the studios and, according to some sources, was keenly interested in the project. Now, according to Nikki Finke, however, Leto has opted to walk away from the film.
Finke, formerly of Deadline, reports that Leto met with director Julius Onah on Monday before deciding to turn down the lead role. For now, Noomi Rapace (the original Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) is the only actor attached to the project.
Brilliance, based on the book of the same name by Marcus Sakey, takes place in a world where one percent of the population are born with heightened cognitive abilities and called ‘brilliants.’ Leto would have starred as Nick Cooper,...

Have you ever considered the job of Location Manager? I can quickly confess that I have not despite often considering plentiful jobs that go on behind the scenes on motion pictures. The Credits discusses the complicated work with Catou Kearney the Location Manager of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. It's a technically challenging movie, not least of which because they shot so much outdoors and needed a lushly overgrown forest.
The apes ... have created a vast forest utopia. Finding such a place, one that looks as abundant as the script demands, but that could also support a large crew and a ton of equipment, takes months of research, legwork, and a few thousand phone calls. Kearney is a seasoned location manager, and relishes the opportunity. “It’s like putting a ten-thousand piece puzzle together,” she says. “When that last piece falls into place, there’s nothing like it.

Jared Leto is in talks to replace Will Smith in the upcoming sci-fi thriller Brilliance. Leto just met with director Julius Onah, so things are still early, but if he signs on he will join Noomi Rapace onscreen. Smith dropped out of the project to take the lead in the untitled Ridley Scott-produced NFL concussion movie.
David Koepp wrote the script, which is an adaptation of the novel of the same name, written by Marcus Sakey. Here is a plot description of the book:
“They’re called 'brilliants,' and since 1980, one percent of people have been born this way. Nick Cooper is among them; a federal agent, Cooper has gifts rendering him exceptional at hunting terrorists. His latest target may be the most dangerous man alive, a brilliant drenched in blood and intent on provoking civil war. But to catch him, Cooper will have to violate everything he...

Deadline reports that Jared Leto is in talks to replace Will Smith in the sci-fi thriller Brilliance, which would be his first major role since winning an Oscar for Dallas Buyers Club. The film is based on Marcus Sakey's novel about a world in which a small fraction of the population are blessed with exceptional abilities and are known as brilliants. Noomi Rapace has signed on to play the female lead, while Leto would play the male lead, a brilliant federal agent tasked with hunting down a deadly terrorist. So basically, instead of Will Smith playing exactly to type, we might have Jared Leto playing radically against type? Consider us intrigued!

• Jared Leto, who won an Oscar for his work in Dallas Buyers Club, is in early talks to star in Brilliance for Legendary Pictures. According to Deadline, Leto met with director Julius Onah on Monday. Based on Marcus Sakey’s novel, the film posits a world where a small number of the population are “brilliants,” which basically means they have extraordinary abilities. The film, adapted by David Koepp, focuses on a federal agent — also a brilliant — who must track down a fellow brilliant who wants to use his powers to start a war. Will Smith was previously attached to the role,...

Will Smith is out of “Brilliance.” And Jared Leto may be his replacement.
The “Dallas Buyers Club” actor indicated recently he wanted to focus on other projects, but it looks like he may found another good juicy role.
According to Variety, Legendary Pictures is in early negotiations with the actor. Leto just met with director Julius Onah.
“Brilliance” is based off the Marcus Sakey novel, in which the one percent of the children born in the world are savants (brilliants) who have special powers. The story specifically follows a federal agent who must hunt down a savant terrorist who wants to start a civil war.
David Koepp penned the script. Universal has the first-look deal with Legendary for distribution.

Just recently, we learned that Jared Leto might be up for the lead role in Marvel's Phase Three title Doctor Strange, but news of a potential new role just might negate that possibility. Deadline has word that Leto, fresh of his Best Supporting Actor win at the Academy Awards for his performance in Dallas Buyers Club, is in early talks to take the lead role in Brilliance, an adaptation of Marcus Sakey's novel of the same name, scripted by Jurassic Park scribe David Koepp. Previously, Will Smith was supposed to take the role in the film set up at Legendary Pictures and Universal, but he left to lead a football concussion drama. Read on! Should a deal be finalized, Leto would join Noomi Rapace, who is still attached as the female lead. For those just joining us, the film follows a federal agent with some kind of superhuman ability...

Choosing what role will be your follow-up to an Academy Award-winning performance is a big deal. Jared Leto has let months elapse since his win before making his decision, but now he could be poised to follow in the footsteps of Will Smith... literally. Variety reports Jared Leto has been offered the lead in Legendary Pictures' Brilliance, a sci-fi tent pole that's poised for franchise development. Talks are said to be in the early stages, but should Leto sign on, he'll be taking on the role that was recently taken and abandoned by Will Smith. This would make Brilliance Leto's follow-up to his Oscar-winning turn in the controversial biopic Dallas Buyers Club. Brilliance will be based on the novel of the same name by Marcus Sakey. Its story is set in a world where 1% of population have incredible powers, like being able to read body language as if it were...

After Will Smith dropped out of Julius Onah’s Brilliance, the studio was left scrambling for a leading man. Now, they seem to have found a replacement in the form of Oscar winning actor Jared Leto, who took home a golden statue earlier this year for his tremendous performance in Dallas Buyers Club.
For those unfamiliar with the project, it will be an adaptation of the Marcus Sakey novel of the same name, and still has Noomi Rapace attached to the female lead role. Scripted by David Koepp, Brilliance will be set in a world where a small part of the population (known as “brilliants”) is born with special abilities. The story focuses on a federal agent who must capture a terrorist (who’s a “brilliant”) that intends on starting a civil war. Update (6/20): Not so fast. According Nikki Finke, Leto has turned down the project after all. Still, nice work in getting offered the gig. Noomi Rapace remains attached; the search for a male lead continues. Previously: To those who say winning an Oscar makes no difference to one's career, here's evidence to the contrary. This time last year, news of Jared Leto replacing Will Smith on a major commercial project would have seemed like crazy talk -- not least because the sometime actor and 30 Seconds to Mars frontman hadn't appeared in any movies at all in four years. Will Smith will not longer star in Universal and Legendary Pictures' upcoming adaptation of Marcus Sakey's sci-fi/superhero novel Brilliance. According to reports, the actor has left the project.
With a screenplay by David Koepp, Brilliance is being directed by Julius Onah. The film follows a federal agent with a unique set of skills who is drafted to hunt down a terrorist who is out to start a civil war. Here's a full synopses:
In Wyoming, a little girl reads people’s darkest secrets by the way they fold their arms. In New York, a man sensing patterns in the stock market racks up $300 billion. It looks like there's one blockbuster out there now without it's star.
