“Some things change but the majority stand still…” So opined The Courteeners’ Liam Fray on the opening track of Falcon, the Manchester four-piece’s second album. 3 years on and Fray and co return with the reverb-drenched synth-laden Anna to prove that The Courteeners have spent this time doing anything but shuffle their feet. But what’s the verdict?
Opener Are You In Love With a Notion? sets the tone for the album both sonically and thematically. Against an 80s style drum breat, uplifting synths and anthemic bombardment of woah-wohs, Fray’s atmospheric vocals tell the story of the album’s titular Anna who, embodying the theme depicted so aptly on the album’s artwork, seeks to leave her humdrum life behind and abscond to her idealist paradise. It’s this theme- along with other typical Courteeners-esque musings on unrequited love, adolescent intemperance and the excesses of...

Move over Morgan Spurlock . we have our own documentary filmmaker on a mission.involving food. Although this filmmaker.s mission is more in reverse. Sydney-born entrepreneur and professional investor Joe Cross had always been financially successful in life however he was .physically bankrupt.. A rare auto-immune disease forced him to take prescription medication and he soon realised, at 142kg, that he was about 50kg overweight. He decided to instead, for 60 days, only.consume .plant food. . fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans and seeds . in liquid form..The idea for the doco, entitled Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead, came when he turned 40 . in 2006 . and it took about a year to prepare and get the cameras rolling. Speaking...

An Australian first time feature filmmaker has hired top American talent to help create his documentary film.
Director Joe Cross employed talent from Michael Moore and Morgan Spurlock’s teams to realise his documentary Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead.
The film is the opposite to Morgan Spurlock’s Supersize Me. Cross embarked on a road trip across the USA with a cameraman, sound guy and a juicer to eat and drink only fruit and vegetables to lose weight, while discovering why people were addicted to fast food.
The film was produced by Stacey Offman, who produced Morgan Spurlock’s Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden.
Cross hired Kurt Engfehr who was editor of Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11 to co-direct. Fellow Fahrenheit alumni Chris Seward was Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead’s editor.
An overweight broker, Cross sold his previous business and without knowledge of the industry set out to make the film.

“Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead” is a different kind of documentary: an often funny, at times touching infomercial for healthier living with no price tags or toll-free numbers to call.
Much of the film focuses on successful Australian entrepreneur and co-director Joe Cross’ alternative approach to relieve the effects of a physical affliction he’s suffered for eight years. He has an overactive immune system disorder that causes never-ending hives (urticaria) requiring (at least according to current Western medical science) that he take the drug prednisone. One common side effect of prednisone is weight gain. Side effect or not, Joe’s diet — loaded with fat, simple carbohydrates, sugar and salt — has him tipping the scales at 309 pounds, complete with a stomach that resembles the exercise ball he should be using.
After trying just about everything to fight the disease,...

The time that exists between SXSW and Comic-Con, from about the end of March until mid-July, is what I like to call my self-improvement time. There are no major film festivals, events or other diversions that have me running for fried foods. I still live in Austin, the world’s capital of live music and delicious BBQ, but I suppose it’s time that I actually work on a diet. Have to get my body in shape for Comic-Con so that I can finally wear my Conan the Barbarian costume in Hall H. Which is why I was drawn to Joe Cross’ documentary Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead. Like many a movie blogger, I’m at least two of the three. In the pic, a very overweight and unhealthy Cross takes on a radical “juice fasting” diet. Just watching the trailer, you’ll be instantly drawn to Joe’s incredible story (and the stories of the people...

Joe Cross is on a mission to get healthy. Years of gaining weight, ballooning to over 300 pounds, and suffering from a rare auto-immune disease have put Cross on the path toward a young death. Determined to take his life back and rid himself of the pills he takes daily to manage his symptoms, Cross embarks on a 60 day journey, to reboot his body and change his life by consuming nothing but water and juice made from fresh fruit and vegetables.
Cross spends the first half of his fast in New York City, confronting all the temptations of his past. After thirty days, he hops in a car and spends the second half of the fast driving across the country, spreading the word about his journey and trying to help others along the way.

A new 'psychic octopus' has tipped Dannii Minogue to be the mentor of this year's winning X Factor act. According to shopping comparison website Kelkoo, Ollie the Octopus has predicted that someone from Minogue's Boys category will be victorious. Ollie was reportedly born at the Sea Life Centre in Weymouth in the same tank as his renowned cousin Paul, who passed away last month. Kelkoo marketing manager Joe Cross said: "Working with Ollie the octopus was a bundle of fun and given his psychic lineage, we couldn’t think of a better way to predict the UK Christmas best-sellers (more)...
