Edward Arentz is in a good mood. Earlier this year at the Berlin Film Festival, the Music Box Films managing director picked up a little Swedish comedy, “A Man Called Ove.” (That’s “oo-veh.”) No one else was much interested in the grumpy-old-man movie starring the original Wallander, Rolf Lassgård, which falls in the mold of Jack Nicholson’s “About Schmidt” or Clint Eastwood’s “Grand Torino” (without the guns).
But Arentz found himself crying, laughing, and deeply moved. And over the years he has learned to trust his gut. After all, he picked up U.S. rights to three other little Swedish films that became a worldwide phenomenon, “The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo” series ($22 million U.S. total). That experience paved the way for “A Man Called Ove.” At $3.3 million, it’s the highest-grossing foreign-language film of 2016, has landed on the foreign-language Oscar shortlist, and has a strong shot at a nomination.

After shoring up in Toronto with their Cannes pick-ups in Alleluia and Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem, the Music Box Films folks have landed their Tiff item. In what should be a significant month of post Tiff month of deal announcements, Music Box’s William Schopf has, according to Variety, made his first item pick-up (we feel that there’ll be more in the pipeline) in Anne Fontaine’s Gemma Bovery. Starring another Gemma in Gemma Arterton, the title had the odd distinction of being included at the fest alongside Sophie Barthes’ Madame Bovery. Fontaine’s film as an outside chance at picking up France’s Foreign Oscar nom, and though the trade doesn’t mention it, we expect a 2015 release.

Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s psychological thriller Penance (Shokuzai) first aired on Japanese TV early last year as a serial drama. Music Box Films will release it theatrically in summer 2014 after snagging distribution rights for the U.S., Canada, UK and Ireland, followed by DVD and digital rollouts. It’s the latest addition to Music Box’s slate of foreign TV acquisitions joining Sweden’s Wallander, Germany’s Generation War and France’s The Returned. Penance begins when a mysterious stranger approaches a group of young girls, then kidnaps and brutally murders one of them. Wracked with grief, the victim’s unhinged mother demands that the four survivors identify the killer or face a penance of her choosing. They grow up in the shadow of that tragic debt. Music Box president William Schopf negotiated the deal with Miyuki Takamatsu of Free Stone Productions on behalf of Japanese network Wowow.
