After releasing The Colorado Kid and Joyland via the Hard Case Crime imprint, Stephen King made his grand debut into the world of hard-boiled crime fiction with Mr. Mercedes. The first in a trilogy, the 2014 novel introduced readers to Bill Hodges, a crusty, retired detective who finds his golden years interrupted by the taunts of a psychopathic killer he failed to apprehend.
A divisive book among the King faithful, Mr. Mercedes is nonetheless an important one, as it introduces Holly Gibney, a recluse-turned-investigator King would go on to feature in four subsequent novels (and one novella), including last year’s Holly.
Join The Losers’ Club’s Randall Colburn, Jenn Adams, Ashley Casseday, and Rachel Reeves as they detail the book’s origins, how it differs from the author’s previous forays into crime, and the ways in which it reflects evolving societal fears about domestic terrorism. They also discuss the...

Stephen King’s ‘Doctor Sleep’ Returns to ‘The Shining’ With Mixed Results [The Losers’ Club Podcast]
“Life was a wheel, its only job was to turn, and it always came back to where it started.”
The Losers’ Club: A Stephen King Podcast heads to Frazier, New Hampshire to review Stephen King’s 2013 novel, Doctor Sleep. The sequel to 1977’s The Shining follows a much-older Danny Torrance, whose battle with alcoholism becomes all the more complicated when he crosses paths with a young child who also has the shine.
Join Losers Randall Colburn, Michael Roffman, and Dan Caffrey as they discuss the True Knot, dirty dishes with poundcake, and debate if King should have ever burned down The Overlook Hotel. Note: This episode was recorded in 2019 and is being re-released today as part of their ensuing chronological read-through.
Stream the discussion below and stay tuned next week for an episode on Bryan Fuller’s Carrie. For further adventures, join the Club over long days and pleasant nights via Apple Podcasts,...

In 2009, Stephen King asked his fans what they’d rather get first — a sequel to The Shining or a new Dark Tower book. They voted for Shining sequel, but the Dark Tower book came first anyway. That book? The Wind Through the Keyhole, a (relatively) trim tale that revisits our favorite gunslinger and his ka-tet in between the events of Wizard and Glass and Wolves of the Calla. In it, Roland spins an eerie tale from his youth over a roaring fire as a starkblast rages outside. As far as Dark Tower stories go, it’s a cozy one.
Join The Losers’ Club‘s Randall Colburn, Dan Caffrey, and Dan Pfleegor as they palaver about its nesting story structure, fairy tale detour, and emotional peek at a young gunslinger in the throes of grief. More importantly, was this book the one that best presaged King’s drift towards crime fiction?...

Sunday wasn’t just St. Patrick’s Day, it was also Kurt Russell’s birthday — and the Halloweenies think that’s worth celebrating. After all, for over 45 years, Russell has kept us rooting for him in a smorgasbord of iconic roles: Rj MacReady, Snake Plissken, Jack Burton, Elvis Presley, Wyatt Earp, Santa Claus, Stuntman Mike, Curtis McCabe, Mr. Nobody, Jeff Taylor, Rudy Russo, Eldon Perry, and, of course, Captain Ron.
Don’t forget he also played the great Sheriff Franklin Hunt in 2006’s Bone Tomahawk, one of our favorite films of the 2010s, and yet also one of our first one-off Rentals in our Patreon, The Rewind. So, to celebrate the big guy’s birthday this past Sunday, the gang unlocked said episode on S. Craig Zahler’s 2015 slice of Western Horror, which includes special guests Randall Colburn and Dan Pfleegor of The Losers’ Club.

Lobstrosities is a Patreon-only segment of The Losers’ Club that journeys into the barren wastelands of Stephen King movies and sequels. In the past, they’ve covered Pet Sematary 2, Creepshow 3, A Return to ‘Salem’s Lot, every sequel to Sometimes They Come Back, and a third of the Corn franchise. Today, in light of its 25th anniversary, the gang is unlocking their 2020 installment on the 1999 sequel, The Rage: Carrie 2.
Directed by Katt Shea, the direct sequel to Brian De Palma‘s Carrie follows Rachel Lang (Emily Bergl), the younger, also-telekinetic half-sister of Carrie White, who learns that her best friend’s suicide was prompted by a group of dickhead male classmates who exploited her sexually. The film brings back Amy Irving as Sue Snell and stuffs enough connective tissue between the cracks to make this whole thing work as a sequel.

If you recall from last week’s episode, we’re spending the next two months catching up on all the Stephen King adaptations and anniversaries we missed over the past year. The Losers’ Club‘s Randall Colburn is joined by one of his favorite songwriters, Zac Pennington (Popular Music/Parenthetical Girls), to unpack the parodic pleasures of U.K. cult hit Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace, a loony hospital horror soap that’s maybe-sorta-definitely taking the piss out of Stephen King.
The pair discuss low-rent ’80s horror, hearing Matt Berry’s voice for the first time, and how genuinely strange it is that Darkplace came out just months before King’s own Kingdom Hospital, his short-lived ABC hospital horror soap. Popular Music’s lush and haunting new album, Minor Works, is available now.

The Losers’ Club receive a letter from the Crandalls and return to Ludlow, Maine for the first time in years. Why? There’s been a series of murders. “How many unsuspected selves could a person have, hidden deep inside? She was beginning to think the number might be infinite.”
As the temperatures continue to drop and the autumn leaves begin to fall, there’s nothing more pleasant than a long, leisurely drive down a picturesque country road. Unless, the driver is Stephen King. Any road trip navigated by the Master of Horror is bound to twist and turn through the darkest recesses of the human heart. After traveling back to the year 1922, The Losers’ Club continues their coverage of King’s disturbing collection Full Dark, No Stars by shining a light on the rape-revenge tale Big Driver.
Tess Thorne loves to drive. After delivering a lunchtime lecture in Chicopee, Massachusetts, the cozy mystery writer avoids the turnpike in favor of a rural detour and uncovers a hellish trap worse than anything within the pages of her Knitting Society novels.

“America’s two great specialties are demagogues and rock and roll, and we’ve all heard plenty of both in our time…”

Yes, three parts — have you seen the size of this thing? “The devil exists. God exists. And for us, as people, our very destiny hinges upon which one we elect to follow.”
In 2013, James Wan broke the box office again for horror with The Conjuring. At the time, he was riding high off the successes of Saw and Insidious, so to crack open yet another franchise for the genre was something of a coup. Yet the story of the Conjuring universe goes way, way back, involving producer Tony DeRosa-Grund and, of course, the Warrens.
It’s a complicated backstory, admittedly, and one that’s ripe for the vintage Halloweenies treatment. Fortunately for you, the gang headed to Harrisville, Rhode Island in June of 2021 and exorcised all the demons within the 2013 blockbuster, particularly the sordid history involving the Warrens that has been the franchise’s foundation for a decade now.
Yet they also discuss why this is arguably Wan’s strongest and scariest picture to date,...

In the March 1973 issue of Cavalier, Stephen King terrified grown men across the world with sordid short story “The Boogeyman”. The harrowing tale would eventually be collected into his first short story collection, 1978’s Night Shift. Now, 30 years after first being published, the story is haunting theaters nationwide with Rob Savage‘s feature film adaptation.

Forgive the creaking hinges and fluttering moths, Constant Listeners. The Losers just cracked open Stephen King’s fabled Trunk, the one where he keeps all the inked-up pages he’s not yet ready to unleash upon the world.
It’s here where Blaze moldered for decades. Written in late 1972 and early 1973 on his wife’s Olivetti typewriter before he struck gold with Carrie, Blaze was published in 2007 under his alias, Richard Bachman. For now, it’s the last thing he’s published under the Bachman name. It’s also a book he thought “was great while I was writing it, and crap when I read it over.” Years later, though, its story of a slow-witted, small-time criminal’s ill-fated kidnapping plot felt salvageable to King, so he toned down the twentysomething schmaltz and used it as a means to raise money for the Haven Foundation.

Will you accept this rose, Constant Listeners?
We hope so, because The Bachelor himself, Zach Shallcross, has chosen The Losers’ Club’s Randall Colburn and Michael Roffman for a two-on-one to discuss his love for Stephen King and all things horror. In the episode, Shallcross details how Pennywise the Clown served as his gateway into King’s Dominion and kickstarted his ongoing quest to read every book in the Master of Horror’s overwhelming catalog. He also reveals how Billy Summers kept him company on his quest for love.
In between digressions about his favorite King books and film and TV adaptations, the Losers quiz Shallcross about some of the deepest cuts in the King canon (he’s read The Colorado Kid; Rage hadn’t yet crossed his radar) and ask if King ever came up in conversation with the women competing for his heart (you bet he did). There’s a new crop in the cornfields. Yes, the long-running Children of the Corn franchise is back yet again with another installment. In fact, it’s the third eponymously titled feature of the brand (following 1984’s and 2009’s), only this one comes from the mind of writer-director Kurt Wimmer, who has harvested his own reimagining of Stephen King‘s Night Shift short story.
Join Losers Michael Roffman, Randall Colburn, Justin Gerber, and Jenn Adams as they discuss how this franchise has amassed 11 features, why the Corn endures, where they could possibly even take this IP down the road, what an Adapted By credit means (as it relates to Sphere), the durability of red wigs, and whether the Pastor is actually Pennywise.
Stream the wild and raucous movie review below, though beware of spoilers. Then return next week when the Losers speak to a very special guest who knows a thing or two about love.

“Man has come to dominate the planet thanks to two essential traits. One is intelligence. The other has been the absolute willingness to kill anyone and anything that gets in his way.”
The Losers are taking that to heart as they run out of Boston Common. All around them, The Pulse has turned the world upside down: mothers are gnawing at their daughters, trucks are crashing into stores, explosions are deafening. Luckily, they find a peaceful retreat at Gaiten Academy, where they catch their breath to discuss Stephen King‘s Cell.
Join Losers Randall Colburn, Michael Roffman, Ana Marie Cox, and Jenn Adams as they revisit King’s 2006 novel. Together, they meditate on the reverberations of 9/11, the parallels to H.G. Wells and Richard Matheson, the hilarious digital marketing campaign around its release, and why this often feels like King’s version of a Greatest Hits album.

Sorry Jack, Chucky‘s back. Indeed he was in 1990, exactly two years following the release of Tom Holland’s 1988 blockbuster Child’s Play. By then, Brad Dourif‘s unstoppable Good Guy doll was a household name, feared by children and adored by teenagers across the nation. So, when Child’s Play 2 arrived, let’s just say Chucky came in a brand new bag.

One club welcomes another on the latest installment of The Losers’ Club’s On Writers series.
This week, co-hosts Randall Colburn and Mel Kassel chat with acclaimed novelist Paul G. Tremblay about last year’s The Pallbearers Club, a twisty tale of two loners that allows them both operate as unreliable narrators — one via his unpublished memoir, the other through the notes she leaves in its margins. It’s an unnerving and edifying story of friendship, obsession, and addiction, not to mention vampirism, be it of the literal or emotional kind.
In conversation, Tremblay unpacks his careful approach to ambiguity and the necessity he feels to earn his experiments with narrative. He also discusses Knock at the Cabin, the M. Night Shyamalan-directed adaptation of his Bram Stoker Award-winning novel The Cabin at the End of the World, and his experience as a novelist in Hollywood. Tremblay also teases his next novel,...

In 1978, the man in black fled across the desert and the gunslinger followed. In 2004, the gunslinger’s journey came to an end. Sort of.
The Losers’ Club concludes its sprint through the final volumes of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower saga with an episode about, what else, 2004’s final chapter The Dark Tower VII: The Dark Tower. Across more than 1,000 pages, Roland and his ka-tet traverse the multiverse, bouncing between numerous wheres and whens on their quest to save a world in swift decline. A number of new (and quite hungry) antagonists, some of whom might be familiar to Constant Readers, emerge in these pages, giving the Losers plenty to unpack in this epic two-part episode.

The Dark Tower looms, but first? Dinner at the Dixie Pig.
The Losers’ Club resumes their sprint through the final volumes of The Dark Tower saga with this epic discussion about the relatively slim Song of Susannah. Released in the summer of 2004, the penultimate Dark Tower novel bounces across dimensions and decades, setting explosive shootouts and cannibalistic dinner parties against a tender (and tragic) portrait of doomed motherhood. A divisive entry in the King canon
Join Losers Randall Colburn, Ana Marie Cox, Dan Pfleegor, and Dan Caffrey as they unpack its labyrinthian lore, intriguing array of supporting characters, and metafictional flourishes. Does the book’s most infamous cameo work — or is it a case of the author eating his own tail? Also, what does the book have to say about the tension between magic and science?
A lot, it turns out.

The Losers’ Club is back on the path of the Beam — and this time they’re following it to the end.
The last three books in Stephen King’s The Dark Tower saga — Wolves of the Calla, Song of Susannah, and The Dark Tower — all arrived in the space of less than a year in 2003 and 2004, surprising fans who’d gotten used to waiting years in between installments. King’s mad rush to finish the books traces back to his near-fatal 1999 accident; having confronted his mortality, he was determined to not leave his epic unfinished. The result is a fascinating and occasionally frustrating conclusion to a series that gets eye-poppingly meta while folding in characters, creatures, and artifacts from every corner of his oeuvre.

In anticipation of The Creepshow, their Stephen King film festival this weekend in Chicago, The Losers’ Club is unlocking one of their older episodes from the Derry Private Library. It’s a volume of the Stephen King Archives, a recurring Patreon feature that sees co-hosts Randall Colburn, Michael Roffman, and Jenn Adams discussing King’s unpublished short stories, long-forgotten interviews, dusty manuscripts, and alternate versions of your favorite tales.
This particular chapter is dedicated to the uncollected stories from the Creepshow franchise. Specifically, 1976’s “Weeds” that inspired “The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill”; 1979’s “The Crate” that inspired, well, “The Crate”; and the unused “Pinfall” segment that should have been in Creepshow 2. Together, they get into the weeds — pun, most certainly intended — of the prose and crawl through the context of which they were published.

Just when you think the killer’s gone and has been dealt with another problem shows up and you have yet another issue to deal with. While Randall Colburn from The Av Club doesn’t really seem to see much value in the books he does happen to think that the story thus far is being improved upon by the TV show, which is kind of odd since it usually goes the

Two weeks before “Us” hits theaters, Jordan Peele’s follow-up to “Get Out” screened for the first time Friday night at SXSW in Austin, Texas. And judging by the early reactions from critics, it appears Peele isn’t suffering from any sophomore slump.

Machado also said that Peele — who wrote, directed and produced the film — cemented himself as the best horror filmmaker in the business.

Despite a Golden Globes bid and pair of Screen Actors Guild Award nominations, Lauren Graham never contended at the Emmys for her portrayal of Lorelai Gilmore on “Gilmore Girls” in either its original 7-year run (2000 – 2007) or its 2016 revival on Netflix. But her well-regarded guest spot on the HBO hit comedy “Curb Your Enthusiasm” could finally earn her that elusive Emmy recognition.
Over the course of three episodes of the show’s ninth season – “Namaste,” “Never Wait for Seconds” and “The Shucker” – Graham portrayed Bridget, a friend of Susie (Susie Essman)’s who becomes romantically involved with Larry (Larry David). Larry and Bridget prove a terrific pairing but their relationship is tested by Bridget’s son, who has Asperger syndrome and isn’t fond of Larry. Ultimately, their fling comes to an end, not on account of her son but because Larry wants Bridget to sign a non-disclosure agreement before continuing with the relationship.
