German mini-major Constantin Film has begun production on the animated feature Dragon Rider, based on the best-selling fantasy novel by author Cornelia Funke (Inkheart).
Johnny Smith, one of the screenwriters on Disney's 2011 hit Gnomeo & Juliet, adapted Funke's novel for the screen, with award-winner German shorts animator Tomer Eshed directing in what will be his feature debut.
Funke's 1997 book, which has sold more than 3 million copies worldwide, follows the adventures of Firedrake, a silver dragon who teams up with a human boy and the Brownie Sorrel to search for a mythical land where Firedrake's family can live...

After playing Jake Epping in Hulu's limited series adaptation of Stephen King's 11/22/63, James Franco is stepping back into Stephen King territory to narrate a new audiobook of King's The Dead Zone (1979).
One of King's most seminal novels (it was adapted for the big screen by David Cronenberg in 1983 before being the basis for a USA Network TV series that ran from 2002–2007), The Dead Zone audiobook will be released by Simon & Schuster in digital and CD form on April 25th, according to EW and Amazon, and you can check out the official synopsis and cover art below (via Simon & Schuster).
The Dead Zone Audiobook: "When Johnny Smith was six years old, head trauma caused by a bad ice-skating accident left him with a nasty bruise on his forehead and, from time to time, those hunches . . . infrequent but accurate snippets of things to come. But it isn’t until Johnny’s...

Stephen King is finally releasing an audiobook for his 1979 novel The Dead Zone, and he's getting James Franco to voice it. Bloody Disgusting says this will be the second time the two have worked together as Franco previously starred in the adaptation of King's 11.22.63. If I were to write a list of two seemingly normal guys who give me the willies, these two top the list so I'm definitely interested to see how this turns out! Pick up Franco's reading of The Dead Zone April 25th.
For those that don't remember the book that well...here's the synopsis:
In The Dead Zone, Johnny Smith awakens from a five-year coma after his car accident and discovers that he can see people’s futures and pasts when he touches them. Many consider his talent a gift; Johnny feels cursed. His fiancé married another man during his coma and people clamor for him to solve their problems.

Six police officers have been shot while on duty in Georgia in the last seven days — and two have died — capping an abnormally violent week for law enforcement in the state.
The six officers, all members of small town departments, were shot during three separate incidents beginning Dec. 7, according to authorities and multiple reports.
In the first shooting that Wednesday, in Americus, Georgia, officer Nicholas Ryan Smarr was shot responding to a domestic dispute inside a local apartment complex, an Americus police spokesman confirms. This was not my first trip down Stephen King Lane. Having seen, by this point in 1983, Carrie, ‘Salem’s Lot, and The Shining, and terrified by some (sorry, Jack, you were a dull boy to me), I eagerly awaited the next screen adaptation from his ever expanding library. At this point I was just starting to delve into his novels, but The Dead Zone had not come across my radar. With little idea what the film was about, I went in cold and staggered out of the theater, stunned by what I had just witnessed. It stands as my favorite King adaptation for its ability to touch me in a way few horror films have been able to do.

About once a month, Cinelinx will chose one director for an in-depth examination of the “signatures” that they leave behind in their work. This week, we’re examining the trademark style and calling signs of David Cronenberg as director.
Cronenberg first became interested in film during college, where he self-taught himself the art before establishing a co-op to produce films. His first feature length films were art-house movies, Stereo (1969) and Crimes of the Future (1970). Shivers (1975) was his breakthrough. That film received a lot of attention because although people were talking about it, they were divided in regards to its vulgarity, especially considering the fact that it was funded by the Canadian government. Still, it was the most profitable film funded by the Canadian government up to that point. His follow up was Rancid (1977) which was commercially successful. His next movie took a break from body horror to explore his love of cars and racing.

Well, there was certainly a lot of variety on this weekend's edition of Britain's Got Talent, wasn't there? From singers to pole dancers to doggy discos to puppeteers, if anything was going to show how many different acts you can have on Bgt it was this episode. But was any of it actually any good? Digital Spy rounds up all the action for you...
The Good...
La Voix & The London Gay Big Band: We quite liked La Voix at first, when she joked: "I'm sorry I was so late - I was having Simon's baby." Mr Cowell wasn't there for this audition (and he doesn't like drag acts, so that may have been a blessing.) This performance of 'New York, New York' wasn't a massive wow moment, but it's no doubt that they're all talented, so it was three yeses for them!
Ed Drewett: Ooh, isn't this going to be a controversial one?...

Looking at the Best Actor Academy Award nominations for the film year 2012, the one miss that clearly cries out for more attention is Liam Neeson’s powerful performance in Joe Carnahan’s excellent survival film The Grey, easily one of the best roles of Neeson’s career.
In Neeson’s case, his lack of a nomination was a case of neglect similar to the Albert Brooks snub in the Best Supporting Actor category for the film year 2011 for Drive(Nicolas Winding Refn, USA).
Along with negligence, other factors commonly prevent outstanding lead acting performances from getting the kind of critical attention they deserve. Sometimes it’s that the performance is in a film not considered “Oscar material” or even worthy of any substantial critical attention.

The UK’s Horror Channel is set to showcase three of David Cronenberg’s most defining films with a season that can’t fail to shock and awaken the senses. Shivers, Rabid and The Dead Zone all receive their Horror Channel premieres, exclusively introduced by top horror directors Simon Rumley (Red White & Blue), Sean Hogan (The Devil’s Playground) and Pascal Laugier (Martyrs). Sat Jan 12 @ 22:55 The season kicks off with the premiere of Shivers (1975), Cronenberg’s debut full-length feature that helped coined the phrase ‘Body Horror’. The infectious plot sees a parasite enter the bodies of people living in a Montreal apartment block and consequently turns them into libido driven, sex mad zombies. Clearly a fan of the genre, Cronenberg cast the unforgettable Hammer Horror siren Barbara Steele in what was to become one of the most iconic scenes in the film. Sat Jan 19 @ 22.55 Next up is the premiere...

Two more films have been added to the 2011 Grimm Up North lineup - one old and one new - that really have us wishing we lived in the UK. Joining the previously announced Stalker are Lucky McKee's controversial The Woman and David Cronenberg's classic adaptation of Stephen King's The Dead Zone.
From the Press Release:
Grimm Up North is pleased to announce its second offering of blood and fear in this year's gloriously gut-wrenching horrorfest as Lucky McKee's The Woman. The must-see controversial film is co-written by award-winning horror novelist Jack Ketchum (Red, The Girl Next Door, The Lost) and stars Angela Bettis (Toolbox Murders, Carrie, May), Sean Bridgers ("Deadwood") and Pollyanna McIntosh (Burke and Hare, Exam, Land Of The Lost).

Ben Johnson isn't exactly what one would call a movie icon; Johnson isn't even a Western icon, despite his presence in numerous Old (and not-so-Old) West movies during his 50+-year career. Johnson's semi-obscurity today is a great reason to celebrate Turner Classic Movies' devoting one whole day to him as part of its "Summer Under the Stars" film series. [Ben Johnson Movie Schedule.] TCM will be presenting 12 Ben Johnson movies, including one premiere, the 1957 Western War Drums, directed by Viennese filmmaker Reginald Le Borg (Voodoo Island, Sins of Jezebel), and starring former Tarzan Lex Barker. The movie sounds like a hoot: Mexican gal Riva (Joan Taylor, actually from Geneva, Illinois) is wanted and desired by both a white trader (Johnson) and an Apache chief named Mangas Coloradas (Barker). Barker playing an Apache should be, ahem, interesting enough, but one named Mangas Coloradas? Here's wondering if that translates as "Colored Mangoes." Anyhow, War Drums sounds like a must-see.

Jesse (Eddie Cibrian) looks at an on-line article about the woman he is keeping an eye on and the word, 'stalker' immediately jumps off the screen at him and at us. As though we're meant to believe Jesse lied to Calleigh (Emily Procter) about her and that he's still stalking her. (Mentioned for an upcoming episode about this.) Also we get to see Calleigh and Delko (Adam Rodriguez) in bed. That's something we didn't want to be subjected to. So their on-again, off-again 'relationship' appears to be 'on-again'. Either that or they seem to be jumping into bed together whenever the opportunity presents itself. A man on death row gets a last minute stay of execution from the Governor. Horatio (David Caruso) watches a news report about the troops in Afghanistan. They are all paged and called into work. Louise Russo,(Phyllis Somerville) the eyewitness from the murder trial, 15 years ago,...

Pretty much overlooked in the States, although it was better received abroad, Clint Eastwood's supernatural drama "Hereafter" spins a fascinating yarn akin to a gentler, more emotional version of "The Dead Zone"… "The Tender Zone?" (Ok, that just sounds dirty, "Hereafter" is a better title.)
Much like Johnny Smith in Stephen King's story, "Hereafter" centers around a San Francisco man named George Lonegan (Matt Damon) alienated due to his gift for being able to see and commune with dead loved-ones upon contact with someone. He's forsaken a lucrative life as a psychic authority in favor of a gig as a lowly factory worker, due to the isolating effects of his power, which we get a glimpse of when a budding relationship with Melanie (Bryce Dallas Howard) gets dashed by his too-close-for-comfort reading of her.
But wait, there's more! Screenwriter Peter Morgan ("The Queen") threads two other seemingly disconnected stories,...

Constantly overlooked at awards ceremonies, the varied films of David Cronenberg often benefit from some remarkable performances. Here are 10 of the very best…
David Cronenberg's films are frequently noted for their existentialist themes and startlingly imaginative flashes of violence, but there's one aspect of his movie making that's often overlooked. Almost every film he's made since the late-70s has featured at least one stand-out performance, and I'd even go so far as to say that some actors have never bettered their Cronenberg-driven turns.
With but one exception, most of these performances have been overlooked by major award-giving organisations. To redress the balance a little, here's our list of career-best performances in Cronenberg's films...

A good boss is a genuine treasure not only for his or her staff, but for the whole company. A leader, an innovator, a constant source of encouragement; demanding much, but leading always by example; not making promises they can't keep, and encouraging good work from his or her subordinates by being a true and genuine inspiration; giving credit and advancement to those members of the team that have made the boss look good. I hope you have had such a boss at some point in your working life. I did, once, and I shall never forget him.
And then there are the bosses that most of us get, most of the time.
The stealers of ideas; the ferocious saboteurs of those underlings who threaten to be better at their job than they are; the early-departers who haven't seen the rush-hour in years; the credit-sequesterers; the ones who view the...
