Richard Jenkins has been cast in Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming series adaptation of the “Criminal” graphic novels, Variety has learned.
The series was originally ordered at Amazon back in January. Jenkins is the first confirmed cast member. The show is described as “an interlocking universe of crime stories” based on the graphic novels by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips.
Jenkins will play Ivan. The character is described as “Leo’s dad’s best friend, and has always been an uncle figure to him. He used to be a robber and criminal, but is now currently suffering from dementia. Leo is trying to care for him but realizes he’s more work than he can handle.”
Jenkins is a highly-respected actor with the rare ability to do comedy and drama in seemingly equal measure. He received Oscar nominations for his performances in the films “The Shape of Water” and “The Visitor...

The Walking Dead maker Skybound Entertainment is pushing into the unscripted game.
The firm has hired ex-Catalina Content exec Brent Jacoby to head up the new division, which will tap into pre-existing Skybound IP such as AMC smash The Walking Dead and Amazon Prime Video’s Invincible.
Jacoby will be focused on quickly expanding the global unscripted TV slate, although Skybound didn’t delve any deeper into his strategy. He joins at the same time as former MGM TV VP Chris Goble, who takes up the newly-created SVP of Television role. Both will report to TV President Glenn Geller.
Jacoby joins from Sky Studios-backed Catalina where he developed the likes of The Mighty Underdogs for Discovery+. Prior to that, he led the development team for ITV America’s Outpost Entertainment, working for the likes of Discovery, A&e, Food Network and Science Channel including History’s Knife or Death.

Criminal, the Eisner Award-winning graphic novel series written by Ed Brubaker and illustrated by Sean Phillips, will soon become a TV series on Prime Video.
Prime Video has given a series order to Criminal, nearly a year after it was put on the development fast-track. A writers’ room for the project was put together early last year, but the WGA strike brought development to a halt. Criminal tells “the interweaving saga of several generations of families tied together by the crimes and murders of the past.” Ed Brubaker wrote the script for the pilot and will co-showrun the series with Jordan Harper (Hightown). Both will also executive produce alongside Sean Phillips, Sarah Carbiener, Phillip Barnett, and Legendary Television.

One picketer said it best: “The longer this strike goes, the more detailed these signs get.”
Judging by some of those Simpsons-themed placards, he’s not wrong. But there have also been lots of not-so-veiled references to some of the ongoing strike coverage. (Don’t recognize the reference to Carol Lombardini and The Cheesecake Factory? Read this story. Can’t remember the exact quote about putting people out of their homes? That notorious line originated here.)
Some of the signs also just show signs of fatigue. “I’m gonna be honest I’m running out of clever sign memes,” said one. “Cause, like, seriously?”

One of the most haunting and atmospheric pieces of filmmaking I’ve seen this year is the pilot for the television adaptation of James Ellroy’s L.A. Confidential, which, as scripted by Jordan Harper and directed by Michael Dinner, beautifully captures Ellroy’s unique blend of acidic humor, weary resignation, and brutal violence as both a destructive and cathartic force. Working with his Justified collaborator Walton Goggins — brilliant here in the role of Jack Vincennes — as well as an equally fine Brian J. I've been following Walton Goggins' career ever since I first watched him in The Shield. He has since had a pretty successful career staring in Justified, The Hateful Eight, and the upcoming Tomb Raider movie just to name a few.
He's a fun actor that takes on great roles and he just landed a perfect role in CBS' upcoming series adaptation of James Ellroy’s 1990 noir novel L.A. Confidential. Goggins will play detective Jack Vincennes, who is described as follows:
“All swagger and flash with a movie star smile, Jack knows how the system works and uses it to his best advantage, including some corrupt shakedowns on the side.”
This character was previously played by Kevin Spacey in the 1997 Curtis Hanson-directed film adaptation of the book. The series will reportedly follow "three homicide detectives, a female reporter and a Hollywood actress. The detectives are following a serial...

CBS’ new take on L.A. Confidential has booked a big name to star.
Emmy nominee Walton Goggins (Justified) has signed on to headline the buzzy pilot, according to our sister site Variety. Goggins will play the role of Detective Jack Vincennes, the flashy and morally questionable Lapd cop played by Kevin Spacey in the Oscar-winning 1997 film.
Like the film, CBS’ L.A. Confidential — which scored an official pilot order earlier this month — is based on the novel by acclaimed crime author James Ellroy, and follows a trio of homicide detectives, a reporter and an aspiring actress as their lives intersect in 1950s Los Angeles.

Yes, yet another ’90s favorite is getting turned into a new TV pilot. (But hey, at least it’s not an old TV show this time.)
CBS has ordered a quartet of new drama pilots for the 2018-19 TV season, TVLine has learned, led by L.A. Confidential, a new take on the James Ellroy detective novel that inspired the Oscar-winning 1997 film. Jordan Harper (Gotham, The Mentalist) will pen the pilot and serve as an executive producer on the project, should it go to series.

CBS is developing a TV series based James Ellroy's classic crime novel L.A. Confidential. Most people are probably more familiar with the 1997 film adaptation directed by Curtis Hanson, which starred Kim Basinger, Russel Crowe, Kevin Spacey, James Cromwell, and Danny DeVito. I'm a fan of that movie, but the book is so much better! If you haven't read it, you need to check it out.
According to Variety, the series will follow "the paths of three homicide detectives, a female reporter, and a Hollywood actress as they intersect while the detectives pursue a sadistic serial killer through the seedy underbelly of 1950’s Los Angeles."
L.A. Confidential is one of four books in Ellroy's "L.A. Quartet" series. The crime fiction novels, which also consisted of The Black Dahlia, The Big Nowhere, and White Jazz, are set in the late 1940s through the late 1950s in Los Angeles.

TV certainly isn’t starved for adaptations of crime novels, stories about L.A., or series based on popular films. Nevertheless, CBS is going to try to make a show that combines all three.
According to a Variety report, “L.A. Confidential” is the latest film-to-tv series in the works, again on network television. The film version went on to plenty of awards success, and despite that prestige pedigree, it looks like this will be on broadcast rather than the CBS All Access platform.

Gotham, Season 2, Episode 21, “A Legion of Horribles”
Written by Jordan Harper
Directed by Rob Bailey
Airs Mondays at 8pm (Et) on Fox
The ball keeps rolling this week with the penultimate episode of Gotham’s second season, which featured the return of a favorable familiar face, Fish Mooney, as other characters ruminate on the legitimacy of Thomas Wayne’s legacy. Even while exploring the crevices of what it means to be heroic and the challenging morality behind sticking up for what you believe in is right, Gotham also manages to include a lot of fun and surprises.
One of the many key factors that makes Gotham so wonderful and engaging is the excellent and eccentric performances by all within the cast. The seriousness placed on the absurdity of their increasingly chaotic situations aren’t lost on any of the characters, and it’s not only that they accept the surrealism,...

The season continues to build this week as the Gcpd make good on their mission to go after The Penguin and his crime organization with the newly created Strike Force. While the Gcpd go after The Penguin, Galavan has been targeting Wayne Enterprises, the family that corrupted his legacy during the inception of the city. We learn, through a newly-introduced historian named Edwige, that there were five high society families that begat Gotham. It’s gearing up for a hell of a finale, but female characters don’t come out of this week’s Gotham very well…
This review contains spoilers.
1.21 The Anvil Or The Hammer
Holy sexism, Batman! Only last week, Barbara’s Ogre strand was feeling like a breath of fresh air – a disliked supporting character was given a chance to bounce off a new villain before the main cast got to him. Good times. This week? Not so much. There wasn’t much of anything likeable in her portrayal this week, unfortunately.
We had high hopes that Barbara might get a heroic moment, wrong-footing the murderous misogynist villain at the crucial moment, and thus playing her part in the Batman-pre-empting crime-fighting action of the series.
Instead, the script (the first Gotham instalment written by supervising producer and The Mentalist alum Jordan Harper) threw out any hopes of an air-punching...

Gotham Season 1, Episode 21: ‘The Anvil or the Hammer’
Written by Jordan Harper
Directed by Paul Edwards
Aired Mondays at 8pm (Et) on Fox
The penultimate episode of Gotham superbly closes the Ogre arc and sets the table for what appears to be an exciting, grand season finale. The last couple of episodes have shown Gordon shaken and dead set on taking down the serial killer the Ogre, as he has threatened to victimize his loved one. The discovery that the loved one in question is his former fiancé only makes him more resolute in his undertaking. This episode does an excellent job at showing how determined Gordon is and the wear it takes on him, with Leslie and Bullock reminding him that he needs to take a break before he burns out, but Gordon doesn’t let up.
