Lifechanger is a Canadian film. You might not think Canada is best known for its horror movies but it’s delivered some very good ones and some very important ones. From Black Christmas to Cube to Backcountry to Prom Night, it’s a list that could go on and on.
The basic story here, like many movies, is at the surface, very simple. A ‘being’, not really human moves from body to body of its victims. It believes it has to kill to stay alive and these deaths become very frequent as the host body deteriorates. But entwined with this is a love story that has lasted beyond each human body. Okay, they may have sounded a little bit complicated but this is a surprisingly easy film to follow.

Lora Burke and Jack Foley in Lifechanger Photo: Fantasia Film Festival
Some films are more satisfying the less you know about what happens in them. After writing a very careful review of Lifechanger, which premièred at this year’s Fantasia film festival, I caught up with star Lora Burke for an equally careful chat. It was a year since we’d last spoken, when she’d recently completed work on Poor Agnes with Robert Notman, and she’d spoken briefly about this project then. I put it to her that one of the curious things about it is that she gets the most screentime even though she’s not the main character.
“Yeah,” she says. “We don’t really see Drew all that much, we hear from him. You know what? It was very much an ensemble piece. It was a big cast. I think it equally fell upon everyone’s shoulders.

Filmmaker Debra Granik made a splash at the start of this decade with Winter’s Bone and she finally returns to theaters with her Sundance debut Leave No Trace with Ben Foster and Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie. Bleecker Street hopes to replicate the box office success of Granik’s previous feature, which helped catapult the career of Jennifer Lawrence. The company is taking Leave No Trace in a number of cities this weekend. Jessica Chastain stars in A24’s Woman Walks Ahead, based on a true story. The feature was written by Who Wants to Be a Millionaire creator Steven Knight. Neon is heading out with Sundance doc Three Identical Strangers, hoping to tap some of the nonfiction success of fellow documentaries Rbg and Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, both of which also debuted at the festival. And Fip is sending out bio-drama Sanju in 355 North American theaters this weekend,...

Russell Crowe was a guest on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno recently, and while he was there he talked a little bit about Zack Snyder's Man of Steel. He plays Jor-El in the movie and here's what he had to say about it,
Man of Steel, yeah. It's a reboot of the franchise with Zack Snyder who did the 300 film and a young English fellow named Henry Cavill. Superman or Kal-el as I would call him because he's my son - times have changed, I'm Superman's dad....To be able to find out that at his core and center that he has that sort of humility is a wonderful moment.
There's so much I want to know about the movie, but it will eventually all be revealed when we finally get to see it! There is another interesting bit of info that's been revealed about the story, and...

No doubt: it's been a very good year for both these stars. And much as I admire Jean Dujardin's sublime performance in The Artist, my hunch is that the industry will favor one of its own on Oscar night. So who will it be -- George or Brad? I'm saving my prediction for a later Oscar piece, but for now simply want to consider these actors' respective contributions, leading up to and including 2011. And you'll note I say "actors," because one thing this past year confirmed was that both these handsome, movie-idol type personalities can, in fact, really act. Some will claim they've always known it, but for me this was a pretty striking discovery. Too often Pitt and Clooney have been constrained by their leading man status to playing cool, heroic protagonists who save the day and get the girl. And they appear to be playing themselves. (Sometimes even on the same screen,...

Transfer deadline day normally brings drama for football fans, as players are seen dashing off for medicals and being driven to football grounds in the dead of night to put pen to paper. However, last night's Premiership game between Everton and league leaders Manchester City made headlines for different reasons as an unusual protest took place. At 8.40pm - around 40 minutes into the first half of the match - a spectator took to the pitch and handcuffed himself to one of the goalposts. Fans at Goodison Park and TV viewers soon saw him surrounded by security staff, police officers and players including Everton captain Phil Neville. The man, named locally as 46-year-old John Foley, is believed to have been protesting against airline Ryanair's alleged treatment of his daughter. Foley's previous protests against (more)...

A New director and writer have boarded Relativity Media's planned reboot of The Crow.
The film is back on track after Relativity settled a legal battle with The Weinstein Company, which had distributed the original 1994 movie through Miramax and claimed it owned all the rights.
The lawsuit was settled out of court and Relativity has now announced that F. Javier Gutierrez has signed on to direct the film with Jesse Wigutow making a deal to pen the script.
Gutierrez made his directing debut on the 2008 apocalyptic meteorite thriller Before the Fall and will be the third man to take the helm of The Crow following the departures of Stephen Norrington and Juan Carlos Fresnadillo.
No casting has yet been unveiled although Bradley Cooper, Mark Wahlberg, Channing Tatum and Jason Statham were previously linked to the project. Brandon Lee starred in the 1994 version and was killed in a gun accident on set.

Sometimes, death is a laughing matter. Here are ten death scenes in movies that are definitely more comic than tragic, even if the film themselves are of a more serious-minded sort. And yes, of course we've included the Sam Jackson vs. Shark (Shark wins) in "Deep Blue Sea."
