Exclusive: Amidst a recent expansion into docs and scripted series, after just two years as a producer-financier of features, Closer Media has added accomplished producers Joey Marra and Nate Matteson to its leadership team. Former Jigsaw exec Marra will lead the company’s non-fiction division, with former manager Matteson set to oversee scripted television.
The hires come following Closer Media’s successful run on the fall festival circuit with titles including its first narrative feature, Ezra, The Monk and the Gun, which was snapped up for North America by Roadside Attractions after bowing out of Toronto, and the documentary In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon.
Marra will be based out of New York City, with Matteson working out of L.A.

This article contains spoilers for the series finale of "Barry."
Stephen Root has worked with some fantastic filmmakers over the course of his impressive, decades-spanning career. When he's not playing mercenary-turned-con man Monroe Fuches on "Barry" — a role he said goodbye to in last night's cutting series finale — he's giving great performances as an indispensable character actor under the direction of people like Ava DuVernay, Mike Judge, Clint Eastwood, Jordan Peele, and the Joel and Ethan Coen. After four masterful seasons of "Barry," though, it doesn't seem unreasonable to add first-time filmmaker Bill Hader to that list, as the comedian, actor, and writer blew audiences away every time he stepped behind the camera for the HBO series.
/Film's Josh Spiegel recently interviewed Root, and it seems the actor agrees. When Spiegel mentioned the finale episode's long take, in which viewers slowly see the aftermath of a shootout between NoHo Hank's (Anthony Carrigan) gang and Fuches',...

“I feel like what I wish I’d known was that I didn’t have to know everything,” says “Atlanta” director Hiro Murai about the wisdom he wished he had before stepping behind the camera for the first time. “I think you really get hung up when you’re coming in, feeling insecure about what you don’t know,” but “any work that’s been good has come out of exploration and discovery.” We talked to Murai as part of our “Meet the Experts” TV directors panel along with Marlee Matlin (“Accused”), Alex Vietmeier (“Late Night with Seth Meyers”) and Owen Harris (“Mrs. Davis”). “The first narrative anything I ever directed was the pilot for ‘Atlanta.’ And so the whole cast and crew that came together for it, a lot of us, it was our first TV experience,” remembers “Atlanta” director and producer Hiro Murai. “Finishing the show this season really felt like the senior year of high school where we just kind of watched each other grow up and we’re kind of putting a bow on this four-season experience that we got to go through together.” We talked with Murai as part of our “Meet the Experts” TV directors panel. A review of this week’s Atlanta, “Crank Dat Killer,” coming up just as soon as I have a safe farm…
It feels strange to describe an episode like this, built around an active shooter situation, as a relatively light one for Atlanta, yet dammit if “Crank Dat Killer” doesn’t feel exactly that. Yes, Al spends a good chunk of the episode running for his life, and Earn and Darius’ new acquaintance Shoe Man suffers a violent and graphic on-camera death. But “Crank Dat Killer” once again demonstrates the series’ complete mastery of tone,...

Best Limited/Movie Directing Emmy 2022: Mike White (‘The White Lotus’) vs. Danny Strong (‘Dopesick’)
At this year’s Emmys, the programs nominated for Best Limited/Movie Directing are similar to the corresponding writing category with “Impeachment: American Crime Story” being replaced by a second episode of “The Dropout.” Just like writing, this race is once again looking like a fight to see whether Mike White for “The White Lotus” can sustain the momentum after the season airing a year ago, or if Emmy favorite Danny Strong for “Dopesick” can steal his thunder.
Here are Gold Derby’s current Best Limited/Movie Directing Emmy 2022 racetrack odds:
“The White Lotus” (Mike White) – 7/2 odds
“Dopesick” (“The People vs. Purdue Pharma” by Danny Strong) — 4/1 odds
“Station Eleven” (“Wheel of Fire” by Hiro Murai) — 9/2 odds
“Maid” (“Snaps” by John Wells) — 6/1 odds
“The Dropout” (“Iron Sisters” by Michael Showalter) — 13/2 odds
“The Dropout” (“Green Juice” by Francesca Gregorini) — 7/1 odds

The nominations for Best Comedy Directing at the Emmys have an equal combination of new shows, last year’s contenders and series making their returns after years between seasons. This category is particularly head-scratching because there are select standout nominees whose episodes are creatively artistic in their execution such as “Barry” or “Only Murders In The Building” against series frontrunners like “Ted Lasso” and “Hacks,” the latter of which won the category last year. So it begs the question of whether the passion of voters will side with a directorial achievement or with what’ll win the top award.
Here are Gold Derby’s current Best Comedy Directing Emmy 2022 racetrack odds:
“Barry” (“710N” by Bill Hader) — 5/1 odds
“Hacks” (“There Will Be Blood” by Lucia Aniello) — 6/1 odds
“Only Murders In The Building” (“The Boy From 6B” by Cherien Dabis) — 6/1 odds
