“Sentinel,” by Hollywood legend Phil Tippett, and “Sister Inconnue,” the first solo directorial outing of Rkss’ Anouk Whissell, cold well be two highlights at a 2024 Cannes Frontières Platform that looks set to underscore the robust range of genre as it is embraced by Hollywood, big independents, horror devotees and auteurs alike.
Creator of creatures for “Star Wars” and “Jurassic Park,” Tippett may have terrified more people than anybody alive. If a teaser is anything to go by, “Sentinel,” a project, may well pick up on the style of 2021’s experimental and nightmarish stop motion/animation “Mad God.”
“Sentinel” features a battleground reminiscent of WWI hellish horror, giant bugs echoing “Starship Troopers,” Tippett’s last big job, attack droids and the statuesque figures of Osiris, Horus and Anubis, the last of which saves the hero, the gas-masked Sentinel, from a gruesome battlefield.
Sure to be a huge draw, an expanded version...

Having impressed with Peter Hengl’s “Family Dinner,” a 2022 Tribeca world premiere, Vienna-based Capra Film is developing an ever expanding slate of movies and series which establishes it as a growing genre force to keep track of in Europe.
Founded in 2015 by producer Lola Basara and writer-director Hengl, Capra Film was the only production-house to have two titles at October’s Sitges Fanpitch, where Hengl’s “Krampusnacht” won a Fantasia-Frontières Award, consisting of an invitation to Frontières, Fantasia’s vibrant industry platform, running July 26-29.
As a potential follow-up, Hengl is developing “Bug Boy,” a teenage body horror creature feature. Also in the Capra hopper are period horror film “Dracu,” from Schlegel, horror film “In the Moorland,” by Michael Winiecki, TV series “Newfall,” from Stefano Nurra, and vampire film “Thirst,” by Paul Ertl.

Happy May Day, the traditional halfway point between the spring equinox and the summer solstice. It celebrates new life, specifically harvests and the oncoming warm summer months. May Day festivities include Maypole dancing, bonfires, and gathering wildflowers. All things that become so much more sinister in horror – just ask Ari Aster about that one.

In a time of flatulent ambitions that, more often than not, fall face first, a film that knows what it wants and does what is essential to achieve the same is quite a treat. If I had to, and by no means do I have to, bring up one area where Peter Hengl’s directorial debut, “Family Dinner,” could have benefitted from a bit more thought, it would be the discernible lack of a singular drive tying up peculiarities of actions of premeditations. But thematic ambiguity has a charm of its own. It is, through conscious devising or not, far eerier when the monstrosity doesn’t have an evident origin, or even a determined goal, for that matter. Sharing its myriad themes with the Fantastic Fest winner Spanish thriller “Piggy” and one of 2022’s more scarring horrors, ‘Speak No Evil’ takes nothing away from “Family Dinner” in the bigger picture.

U.K. director Michele Fiascaris scored the Bifan-Naff Award with “Rain Catcher,” produced by Filippo Polesel at Yellow Pill. In it, a voyeur ends up getting stalked himself, a modern social-stalker story.

“The Hour of the Sorcerer,” “Zombie Meteor” and “Bloody Mary” feature among a powerful lineup of 16 titles at the 2022 Sitges Fanpitch, an anticipated pitching event for sci-fi, fantastic and horror features and series.

From the very first shots in Clara Stern’s Breaking The Ice (a highlight of the 21st edition of the Tribeca Film Festival) we are seized under the fast-moving spell of the Dragons, a Viennese women’s ice hockey team. Mira (Alina Schaller), the protagonist whose journey the film follows most closely, is the captain. Her family owns a vineyard where she works together with her mother and grandfather (Wolfgang Böck), whose dementia begins to creep into the fibre of everything.
The armour-like uniforms of the sport when shed in the locker room of the Dragons reveal an array of very different women. One of them, Theresa (Judith Altenberger), newly joined the team and from the start it is clear that not-yet-definable sparks are flying between her and Mira. Dynamics shift when one day Mira’s brother Paul (Tobias Samuel...

In writer/director Peter Hengl’s unsettling directorial debut Family Dinner, tension and dread are both on the menu as a teen’s desire to lose weight takes her on a sinister journey that culminates in a shocking finale that left me rattled. At the start, we’re introduced to Simi (Nina Katlein) who is being dropped off at the home of her aunt Claudia (Pia Hierzegger) who is a renowned nutritionist and author who specializes in clean culinary activities. Claudia lives on her compound with her lover Stefan (Michael Pink) and troubled teenage son Filipp (Alexander Sladek) who seemingly has more issues than a subscription to Rolling Stone. When Simi arrives, she’s not exactly welcomed in by her hosts, but once she tells Claudia that she wants her aunt to help her change her life, the dynamic changes, and suddenly it seems like everything is looking up for Simi.

Peter Hengl’s Family Dinner, a highlight of the 21st edition of the Tribeca Film Festival, has a modern day Hansel and Gretel feel. Philipp Otto Runge’s Juniper Tree (Von dem Machandelboom), a tale that inspired the Brothers Grimm stylistically, may come to mind, or movies such as Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining or Peter Greenaway’s The Cook, The Thief, His Wife And Her Lover while watching this story of food, desire, family, customs, and control unfold on the screen.

For their seventh annual edition, the Spooky Movie International Horror Film Festival is really blowing things up!
Well, not literally. But the world’s premiere horror movie fest is expanding to over double its regular size, screening over 50 films on nine terrifying nights Oct. 10-18 at its new home, the prestigious AFI Silver Theatre in Silver Spring, Maryland.
The scares kick off on the 10th with the return of local fave filmmaker Richard Bates, Jr. with the feature-length version of Excision about a teenage girl obsessed with becoming a surgeon. The film co-stars John Waters, Malcolm McDowell and Traci Lords. Bates’ original short Excision on which the feature is based screened at Spooky Movie back in 2008.
A few other Spooky Movie alumni who are back with highly anticipated new films include Mike Davis‘ “green” horror movie President Wolfman, which is composed entirely of public domain footage mixed with a rip-roarin...
