It wasn’t an easy path to victory for her, though, as she was initially eliminated during the “Restaurant Wars” episode. However, she won her way back into the main competition with five consecutive wins in Last Chance Kitchen against other eliminated participants. When it comes to casting “Top Chef,” talent is the most important element a contestant must possess in order to compete. “Everything else comes second,” said Ron Mare, the Emmy-nominated Senior Vice President of Casting at Magical Elves, which produces Bravo’s long-running culinary competition. But it’s no longer necessarily a skill with knives that the casting team is looking for.
“You have to have that talent level in order to go on a show like this,” he continues, explaining that casting “Top Chef” is far different from the many reality series he’s handled in the past, like, “America’s Next Top Model” and “Project Runway.” As the series has evolved, so have the people cast on the show. While talent remains paramount, there’s more of an emphasis on compelling food stories, with host Padma Lakshmi telling “Entertainment Tonight” that “Top Chef” “shows audiences a very particular side of these chefs.

Can she complete her comeback by winning the whole competition?

Leia Gaccione was eliminated first from “Top Chef: Houston,” but things have been looking up since then. She won the first episode of “Last Chance Kitchen” against Stephanie Miller. Then she won episode two against Sam Kang. This week, however, after a double elimination in “Doppelgangers,” Gaccione had to combat two cheftestants as she fights for a spot back in the main competition. How did she fare? Watch the battle above.

Robert Hernandez and Sarah Welch were the two eliminated from “Top Chef” this week. They’d teamed up to create identical looking dishes that tasted completely different, and while the judges were fond of a lot of their flavors, technical errors resulted in poor texture. “Top Chef: Houston” started last week with a challenge focused around primal cuts of beef. So it’s fitting that episode two, “Friday Night Bites,” took the cheftestants in completely the opposite direction: carbs! Read on to find out what the contestants did with my favorite food group.
See‘Top Chef’ season 19 premiere recap: ‘Primal Instincts’ started Houston competition with a beefy team challenge
The 14 chefs remaining in the competition were Damarr Brown, Jo Chan, Monica Feybesse, Evelyn Garcia, Robert Hernandez, Jae Jung, Jackson Kalb, Sam Kang, Luke Kolpin, Buddha Lo, Stephanie Miller, Ashleigh Shanti, Nick Wallace, and Sarah Welch.
But before the chefs went carb crazy, they had to tangle with my second favorite food group …
Quickfire Challenge
When the cheftestants entered the kitchen, they were greeted by Padma Lakshmi and guest judge Irma Galvan, a James Beard Award winning chef. They were surrounded by piles of cheese and a fondue machine.

After safely and successfully filming its most recent season last year in Portland, Ore., “Top Chef,” Bravo’s Emmy-winning culinary competition, has moved to Houston for Season 19. Production has begun there, and the show will premiere next year.
Padma Lakshmi, Tom Colicchio and Gail Simmons are all returning to adjudicate the new group of cheftestants. Also coming back will be a variation of last season’s “Top Chef” all-star judging panel, in which alumni of the show joined its bubble as guest judges and mentors. The idea was born out of pre-covid vaccine necessity, but proved to be popular with the show’s fans. Tiffany Derry, Hung Huynh, Stephanie Izard, Melissa King, Kristen Kish, Kwame Onwuachi, Sam Talbot, Brooke Williamson and Claudette Zepeda are among the alumni who will appear on “Top Chef’s” 19th season, with more names to be announced later.

“Top Chef” Season 18 premieres Thursday, introducing fans to the 15 chefs who will be competing for the title in Portland during this installment. The supersized kickoff to the season will also give viewers an understanding of what changes had to be made in order to film this pandemic-produced “Top Chef.”
And one of the first things “Top Chef” obsessives will probably be wondering about — once they see the accommodations in the first episode — is how fan-favorite challenge Restaurant Wars is going to look when it comes around later this season. After all, Covid-19 has made running established restaurants almost impossible, so how would “Top Chef” contestants manage to safely throw together and run the pop-ups that are a staple of that particular competition?
Luckily, TheWrap has the answer.

Last week “Top Chef” went from six contestants to five … and then back to six. Karen Akunowicz was eliminated (for the second time) after “Colossal Coliseum Kaiseki.” Then she lost in “Last Chance Kitchen” to Kevin Gillespie, who earned his way back into the competition. But can Gillespie actually win after he was eliminated once already? Quite possibly. It has happened three times before.

It shouldn’t be too surprising that a male chef leads the final six remaining players on “Top Chef” so far this season. Eleven of the 15 winners so far have been male. There’s been some progress since Stephanie Izard in Season 4 became first woman to come in first. But it took six years until No. 2 Kristen Kish claimed the “Top Chef” title, Since then, Mei Lin (Season 12) and Brooke Williamson (Season 14) rose to the top as well.
But Eric Adjepong (seen above), just one of two men still kicking on Season 16, has come by his favorite status with 43% predicting he will be this season’s champ in the best way possible – by making great food, often with African flavors. True, he has yet to win a Quickfire Challenge but he has never been a low-scorer. As for Elimination Challenges, Eric rules as the only player to win three – the last two back-to-back.

On Thursday, March 8 the winner of “Top Chef” Season 15 will finally be crowned. Host Padma Lakshmi and judges Tom Colicchio, Gail Simmons and Graham Elliot have narrowed down the crop of chef-testants from 15 down to the Final 2: Adrienne Cheatham and Joseph Flamm. Who do You think will join the “Top Chef” winners list? Hurry — there’s still time to make your predictions before the winner is named next week.
Adrienne and Joseph have so far had vastly different journeys on “Top Chef: Colorado.” Adrienne started out the season from a position of weakness, being in the bottom for four of the first six episodes. Around the halfway mark of Season 15 Adrienne truly came alive, being in the top for three weeks and winning her first challenge in the loved ones episode. Joseph, of course, was eliminated in Episode 9 and sent to Last Chance Kitchen. That’s where he excelled against the other ousted chefs,...

The chefs then met with the governor of Colorado, John Hickenlooper, before the night’s big elimination.
