Stephen King is, as his name suggests, the king of horror fiction (while occasionally delving into other genres). The combination of his vivid writing style, characters with unique personalities and special abilities, and epic stories that unfurl with riveting suspense make his work rife for cinematic interpretation. Within these spine-chilling stories, King infuses keen observations on the human condition, and how evil — both supernatural and real — manifests in our society. Stephen King's literary works have produced some of the greatest films of all time including Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining," Brian De Palma's "Carrie," and Rob Reiner's "Stand By Me." Over 70 of his novels and short stories have been adapted into films or television shows, but since he is such a prolific writer — often churning out several books each year — there are countless that have yet to be adapted. This list ranks seven of Stephen King's engrossing page-turners...

Actor John Wayne starred in Western and war movies that filled his filmography. However, he didn’t initially get his start in front of the camera. First, Wayne worked at Fox in the props department on several films before getting his first leading role in Raoul Walsh’s 1930 Western adventure called The Big Trail. Here are the eight movies Wayne worked on in the props department before he was famous.

The world lost a real talent recently as Anne Heche, star of movies such as "Donnie Brasco" and "John Q," passed away following a tragic car accident. The 53-year-old actress will certainly be remembered for her decades-long career that included everything from big-budget romantic comedies ("Six Days and Seven Nights") to classic slasher flicks ("I Know What You Did Last Summer"). But one of Heche's very best performances required absolutely nothing other than her voice, and it was a performance capable of moving one to tears. This is something I can attest to personally.

It was only a matter of time before Lynne Ramsay and Stephen King came together. Both creators have a tendency for exploring dark themes and complicated characters and now we'll get to see just what Ramsay does with a King original.
Ramsay and co-writer Christy Hall ("I Am Not Ok With This") have adapted King's "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon."
The 1999 psychological horror tells the story of a 12-year-old named Trisha Gordon who gets separated from her mother and brother while on a hike through a portion of the Appalachian Trail. Lynne Ramsay, whose hallucinatory films often have a genre edge, is making her first official foray into horror with an adaptation of Stephen King’s 1999 cult novel “The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon.” Ramsay will direct the film from a script she co-wrote with Christy Hall, co-creator of the Netflix series “I Am Not Okay With This.” Production is set to commence sometime next year, with Village Roadshow Pictures backing the project. “The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon” carries an impressive horror pedigree, as the producers include Christine Romero, the former wife of the late George A. Romero, and “It” producer Roy Lee of Vertigo Films.
For those who haven’t read King’s chilling novel, here’s the official synopsis from the horror author’s website: “Nine-year-old Trisha McFarland strays from the path while she and her recently divorced mother and brother take a hike along a branch of the Appalachian Trail.

Your once-in-a-blue-moon Lynne Ramsay news comes today courtesy Stephen King, whose 1999 novel The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon just might fuel her next feature. Though we’d recently heard about interest in a Margaret Atwood short story, word from THR has it she’s partnering with Village Roadshow, Roy Lee (both parts of It), and Christine Romero, former wife to the late George A. Romero, who had once intended to adapt the novel; this take was co-written by Ramsay and Christy Hall, a mind behind Netflix’s I Am Not Okay with This.
King’s 1999 novel is a stripped-down survival tale likely simpatico with Ramsay’s ascetic form, following as it does a young girl who becomes lost on a hike with her family, spending days wandering the forest as rations deplete and, per the author’s standard, a bizarre kind of mysticism. (Safe to say whoever lands the role...

Scottish filmmaker Lynne Ramsay has been tapped to direct The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, the film adaptation to the 1999 psychological horror novel by Stephen King, which is set up at Village Roadshow Pictures.
Ramsay, who wrote and directed the Joaquin Phoenix-starring drama, You Were Never Really Here, also penned the screenplay for The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon with Christy Hall.
The story centers on 12-year-old Trisha McFarland who strays from the path while she and her recently divorced mother and brother take a hike along a branch of the Appalachian Trail. Lost for days, wandering farther and farther astray, Trisha has only her portable radio for comfort. A huge fan of Tom Gordon, a Boston Red Sox relief pitcher, she listens to baseball games and fantasizes that her hero will save her. Nature isn’t her only adversary, though – something dangerous may be tracking Trisha through the dark woods.

I’ve been wondering when Hollywood would get around to adapting the Stephen King novel The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon. This is actually a story I would have loved to adapt. It’s such a great story and it’s being developed by the producers of the It films, so it seems like it’s in good hands.

Remedy's macabre masterpiece videogame, Alan Wake, is frighteningly close to a true Stephen King tale.
Lots of spoilers for Alan Wake lie ahead.
2010’s Alan Wake opens with these lines: “Stephen King once wrote that nightmares exist outside of logic and there's little fun to be had in explanations. They're antithetical to the poetry of fear.”
It’s rare to find a piece of entertainment that so openly boasts about its influences. Yes, we as consumers recognise when a title has been influenced by another work, but for creators, there is a value - whether tangible or perceived - to originality. After all, there's always a worry that the work that you do will be considered a "rip off" of something else.

Stars: Dan Palmer, Tom Gordon | Written and Directed by Damon Rickard
To put it simply, The Package is a short film, written and directed by Damon Rickard, about how far a man is prepared to go to get something back that was stolen from him…
One of the great things about short films is that there is rarely time for establishing detailed characters or setting, so they jump straight into the meat of it. This is absolutely true with The Package, as no more than twenty seconds in, the main character (whose name we never learn) is knocked out and wakes up tied to a chair in an unknown location.
Who is he? We don’t know. Why is he there? We don’t know. What follows is a scene of uncomfortable torture where we are drip fed just enough information to keep us on the cusp of understanding, always wanting to know more.

Darkmoor Manor is England’s most haunted house, its doors closed to the public. It is now just part of a tour which helps attracts visitors to a struggling town. That is until the tour guide, trying to impress two attractive American visitors promises to get them inside. But none of them could be prepared for what was waiting within the shadows of the house.
The Tour is a short film which doesn’t even reach the fifteen minute mark in length. So here is my equally short review: It is the perfect way to quickly inject some horror into your day if you’re in a rush or just can’t be bothered with all that build up and other stuff which is involved in a standard length film.

Film4 FrightFest will be screening a record twenty short films, twelve of them world premieres, at this year’s August event at the Vue West End, Leicester Square – including the latest from director Federico Zampaglione entitled Remember, the Fiona Dourif starring She (which I backed on Kickstarter many moons ago) and the second Jessica Cameron-starring production showing at Frightfest, the UK-lensed short The Tour.
Spearheading this year’s selection is the world premiere of Show Pieces, three tales of terror written by Alan Moore, the genius 2000 Ad writer behind Watchmen, The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen, From Hell and V For Vendetta. Moore has never previously written specifically for the screen, until now. Directed by his close friend and internationally acclaimed photographer Mitch Jenkins, this interconnected trilogy kicks off with. ‘Act of Faith’ in which a young woman looking for the next step in sexual excitement unfortunately finds it. ‘Jimmy...
