A 15-year-old “Lord of the Rings” fan film titled “The Hunt for Gollum” is back online and streaming on YouTube after it was temporarily blocked in the aftermath of Warner Bros. revealing its next “Rings” movie has the same title (via Entertainment Weekly). The fan film, which centers on Gandalf tasking Aragorn with hunting down Gollum before the latter can find Frodo and the One Ring, has earned 13 million views since its debut more than a decade ago.
The fan-created “Hunt for Gollum” was unavailable to watch on May 9 after Warner Bros. announced Andy Serkis is starring in and directing “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.” Viewers got the following message on the fan film: “This video contains content from Warner Bros. Entertainment, who has blocked it on copyright grounds.” The fan film was restored on YouTube by the morning of May 10.

If Warner Bros.’ newly announced The Lord of the Rings movie idea The Hunt for Gollum sounded a bit like fan fiction, that’s because it already is.
There’s a 2009 fan-made film titled The Hunt for Gollum that you can watch below. The film, directed by Chris Bouchard, is rather ambitious. The Hunt for Gollum spans 39 minutes and has received plenty of praise from fans upon its release.
Following WB’s announcement, the film was taken offline for many hours and YouTube put up a notice saying Warner Bros. had filed a copyright claim against the fan movie and blocked it. Lotr fans reacted quite negatively to the takedown online and, early Friday, the film was restored to YouTube.
A studio source says the takedown request was done in error.

While Amazon continues Tolkien’s Middle-Earth adventures with The Rings of Power series, Warner Bros. would run with their own rights to the IP, which would be parallel to the show — not intended to intersect. It was recently announced that Warners is bringing back Peter Jackson, who made his bigger-budget blockbuster career on the Lord of the Rings movies back in the early 2000s. Jackson will produce a film that Andy Serkis will direct, which is a Gollum spin-off, tentatively titled The Hunt for Gollum. A statement from the studio would comment, “We are honored they have agreed be our partners on these two new films. With Andy coming aboard to direct Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum(*Wt), we continue an important commitment to excellence that is a true hallmark of how we all want to venture ahead and further contribute to the Lord of the Rings cinematic history.

The Lord of the Rings franchise is set to add another project to its league, which is set to be out in 2026. Titled Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, it is starring and directed by original Gollum actor Andy Serkis. However, the project is garnering a negative spotlight due to what Warner Bros did after announcing the project.

Update: "The Hunt for Gollum" is now live again on YouTube. In a statement accompanying the restoration, the filmmakers wrote:
"We're back, thanks to [Warner Bros.] for being so understanding to us as fans and artists. We're very positive and excited for what the new movie will be ... Meanwhile glad people can watch this, our low-budget effort at the story."
Original article follows.
Middle-earth is back in full force, with more stories set in Tolkien's world at the same time than ever before. We have the upcoming "Rings of Power" season 2 (which may give us Tom Bombadil), but also the upcoming animated "War of the Rohirrim" feature giving us the previously untold story in the Legendarium. Now, we can add another title to the list: "The Hunt for Gollum," a new "Lord of the Rings" movie from Warner Bros. that has Andy Serkis directing and Peter Jackson producing.

A new Lord of the Rings spin-off movie has been announced, and it’s getting the old gang back together; the producers/writers of both film trilogies, Peter Jackson, Phillipa Boyens, and Fran Walsh will be producing once more, and directing duties will be taken over from Jackson by Andy Serkis, who played Gollum in both trilogies and who was also second unit director on The Hobbit films. Since then, he has directed three movies so he is well prepared to take on this one.
Serkis will also star in his original role of Smeagol/Gollum, and the film is currently tentatively titled The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. If that title means what we think it means, it could be a really exciting prospect.

There exists in abundance, several pieces of fictional works set in fantasy lands and places, consisting of unrealistic characters with unimaginable powers and abilities. Of these, George R. R. Martin’s Game of Thrones and J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings are considered among the best and have now become a staple part of popular culture.
A still from Game of Thrones
Both set up in unbelievable fantasy worlds with some of the most extraordinary characters, and the two lores could not have been more different. While one can find certain similarities between the two, even the authors differ in their approach. And George R. R. Martin particularly has a problem with how J. R. R. Tolkien dealt with one fan-favorite The Lord of The Rings character.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy is one of the most celebrated works of fantasy and has been regarded as one of the greatest films ever. Director Peter Jackson spent years bringing to life a novel series that was considered to be unadaptable. The final film of the trilogy The Return of the King won eleven awards at the Oscars, including Best Picture.
Many actors in the fantasy trilogy have gone on to become stars. While lead actors such as Elijah Wood and Viggo Mortensen became synonymous with their roles as Frodo and Aragorn, other actors such as Orlando Bloom, Liv Tyler, and Andy Serkis saw new levels of stardom. Bloom, who would go on to star in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise reportedly received a very low salary for playing the role of Legolas in the trilogy.

Lord of the Rings has shaped many a child’s life almost a century apart. Be it J. R. R. Tolkien’s literary series in the 1930s or Peter Jackson’s trilogies in the 2000s, the franchise has brought the world of epic high fantasy tales involving Elves, hobbits, kings, and wizards just a little bit closer to our fingertips.

Sir Ian McKellen then gladly served himself up as the victim of the director’s experimentation.

Ian McKellen is one of the most respected and talented actors in Hollywood. Over the course of his lengthy career, he established himself as a force to be reckoned with, achieving so much through his acting career that he was even knighted by Queen Elizabeth II. His versatility knows no limitations, having starred in many different kinds of roles and movies from all genres.
Sir Ian McKellen as Gandolf in The Hobbit
Considering just how talented and successful he is, it is not surprising that the actor is offered many different types of roles. Sometimes that may be through lesser-known sources, and others they may be very high-profile projects.
It would seem that the actor was asked to be a part of Tom Cruise’s iconic film series, Mission: Impossible, being offered the role of Commander Swanbeck in the second movie. Interestingly enough, the actor rejected this offer due to one reason.

The Hobbit: Five Key Differences Between the Book and the Movies - Main Image
Almost a decade after the critical and commercial success of The Lord of the Rings trilogy on film, director Peter Jackson journeyed back to Middle-earth to bring J.R.R. Tolkien's children's novel The Hobbit to the big screen in 2012.
Expanding The Hobbit lore into three parts allowed for more creative freedom to create new characters and scenarios written especially for the films. Here are five notable instances of the key changes made in the movies.

There’s a special tug at the heartstrings that follows the death of an actor who’s been closely associated with a death scene, as is the case with Bernard Hill, who died May 5 at the age of 79.
The death of Juanita Moore in 2013 at the age of 98 came 54 years after maybe the ultimate movie deathbed scene — not to mention funeral, with a horse-drawn hearse and Mahalia Jackson eulogizing her in song — in Douglas Sirk’s “Imitation of Life.” And when Carl Weathers died earlier this year, it came nearly four decades after his best-known character, Apollo Creed, had died in “Rocky IV,” prompting the entire “Creed” franchise to spring up in his wake, with him conspicuously, obviously, absent.
Much praise and remembrance has been given since Hill’s passing to his role as Captain E.J. Smith in James Cameron’s “Titanic.” But Bernard Hill’s death scene as Theoden...

Sauron wasn’t half as bad as Gandalf made him out to be, and in many regards, he was much better than his opposition. Here are five reasons why Sauron might have been the good guy in Lord of the Rings — or, at the very least, not the villain you think he was.
5. Sauron Was Supported by Many Nations
Unlike his opposition that mainly consisted of two human kingdoms and a few token elves, Sauron had support from truly diverse groups. Orcs, mountain people, elephant riders, pirates, the Witch King’s folks, cave trolls, the wizard king, a dragon, and the entirety of Mordor all willingly united to support the one true ruler, Sauron.
4. Sauron Was Progressive and Inclusive
Sauron didn’t care for anyone’s disabilities or race. His commanders were a disabled albino orc and, later, an orc with cerebral palsy. He partnered and worked with dragons and wizards.

English actor Bernard Hill, best known for his performances as Captain Edward Smith in James Cameron's "Titanic" and King Théoden in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, has died this morning at the age of 79. The news was confirmed to the BBC by Hill's agent, Lou Coulson. Hill had been set to appear at Comic Con Liverpool this weekend, but had to cancel at the last minute.
Born to a mining family in Blackley, Manchester, in 1944, Hill belonged to a disappearing breed of British actors from working class backgrounds. Early on in his career he became the voice of a generation through his character Yosser Hughes in Alan Bleasdale's drama series "Boys from the Blackstuff." A Liverpudlian father who becomes broken by his struggle to find work and the threat of having his children taken away, Yosser was emblematic of the sharply rising unemployment rates and brutal welfare...

We all know who achieved the goal of the Fellowship of the Ring, nevertheless, it’s curious to imagine who could also destroy the most powerful thing in Middle-earth.
9. Boromir
All fans can agree that the prince of Gondor was the weakest one in the Fellowship, doubting its mission from the very beginning at the Council of Elrond, so that he’d be easily overtaken by the Ring’s power and wouldn’t complete the serious mission.
7-8. Merry & Pippin
The two hobbits are similar in this respect, as they both hadn’t got a clue for what they signed up for, having literally no fighting and traveling experience, and being childishly naive and not so serious as other fellow hobbits.
6. Legolas
Calm and experienced elf could be a great contender to carry the Ring, but it’s known that his race is not so immune to the Ring’s lure.

In a wholly original turn, writer-directors Craig Hinde and Marc Zammit spin out an atmospheric, but orthodox British horror into realms of multiverse-type mind expanding entanglement
After kicking off with an atmospheric but orthodox piece of hoary British witchfinder gothic, Witch takes a genuinely unexpected and ambitious swerve after 45 minutes; as if writer-directors Craig Hinde and Marc Zammit had divined a scenario through a Ouija board during a fly agaric bender in the small hours. Divulging it would earn a dose of the ducking stool, and in any case it’s not quite clear that all the details hold up. But to broach the general nature of their devilry, it zooms this story of religious persecution out into a multiverse-type entanglement.
In 1575, the Horned One appears to have targeted the town of Dawnbrook; a woman takes to its streets carrying her parents’ severed heads. But at the murderer’s trial,...

ings of Power Season 1 was always going to end on an intriguing note. With so many fans of the film trilogy and book series tuning into the show, the writers had plenty of opportunity to hint at what might come without giving the game away.
But there was one avenue that should have been off-limits. And that's the one they chose.
Ian McKellen's Gandalf is the standard by which all future portrayals will be judged
You don't even have to like the Lord of the Rings trilogy to appreciate that Ian McKellen's version of Gandalf was pretty much perfect. That's why he received two Oscar nominations and won two Screen Actor's Guild Awards for his performance.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy is one of the most iconic fantasy series of all time. Being the adaptation of the beloved J. R. R. Tolkien book series of the same name, it brought something new during a time when the genre was already full of magic. On top of the excellent cast, the films have been regarded as masterpieces, featuring excellent cinematography and magnificent world-building.

Waiting for The Rings of Power season 2 feels a lot like Gandalf and Pippin looking out from Minas Tirith at the approaching fires of Mordor, a deep breath before the plunge. The Rings of Power season 2 wrapped filming last year and is reportedly slated to hit our screens in 2024, but Amazon has yet to announce a proper release date or tease anything from the new season beside vague hints from cast members last summer (like our interview with Morfydd Clark about what’s next for Galadriel). It’s been a long wait, with the last episode of the series airing in 2022.
But fans shouldn’t take the silence surrounding the second season as a sign that Amazon has cooled on its big-budget Lord of the Rings series. In fact, according to reports, the studio and showrunners Patrick McKay and Jd Payne are already whipping up a third season of the show.

Sir Ian McKellen’s portrayal of X-Men villain Magneto is simply too iconic. Rousing speech before a battle might be Magneto’s way of doing things. Sir McKellen, however, is more like another X-Men character than his own. The advice he gave to X-Men co-star Hugh Jackman is proof enough of how unlike Magento he is.

Sir Ian McKellen is renowned the world over for his expertise in the acting field that has won him numerous recognitions and awards. The Oscar nominee though, is best known in the commercial cinematic space for playing two cult characters namely Gandalf from Lord of the Rings, and Magneto from X-Men.

McKellen who portrayed these two iconic roles masterfully, became hugely popular with audiences and critics worldwide. While J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings novels are considered the epic fantasy work of the 20th century, Frank Herbert’s Dune is considered the epitome of sci-fi novels around the same period. Many might have noticed some similarities in the themes of both these groundbreaking works of fiction but most fans don’t know that Tolkien absolutely hated Herbert’s influential novels.
J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings novels were peak works in the 20th-century fantasy genre
Tolkien openly talked about this hatred in a letter to a friend. However, he didn’t mention the reason behind his dislike for Herbert’s work. Many speculate that Tolkien’s opinion about Dune stemmed from how the novel handled its religious theme as opposed to Lord of the Rings.

“Oppenheimer” took home an impressive seven Academy Awards at Sunday’s Oscars, including the night’s top prize of Best Picture. The Universal movie also won Best Director for Christopher Nolan and Best Actor for Cillian Murphy amongst a number of other awards. However, seven is still a huge tally and places “Oppenheimer” amongst the Best Picture winners to take home the highest amount of Oscars this century. Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy excelled at many things, but special mention should be given to the films’ action set pieces and the attention to detail. In one of the crucial scenes in the second film, The Two Towers, Saruman’s army of Uruk-hai march towards the Helm’s Deep fortress, and the army at Aragorn’s command prepares to counter the attack. As the Orc-breeds line up in front of the fortress, one of the old archers under Aragorn’s command prematurely shoots an arrow.

For years, fans believed that if this one mistake from the archer had been avoided, casualties would have been much less for the defenders before Gandalf and Éomer arrived with the Rohirrim. However, an expert archer reveals that the scene in the film was technically accurate and explains what happened in the scene.

The Rings of Power season 1 was the most expensive season of television ever made at the time of its debut in September 2022. Unsurprisingly, the premiere pulled in huge numbers for Amazon Prime Video, although reports suggest the series saw a steep drop in viewership in later weeks.
Despite winning a few awards and being nominated for many others, online fan discussion about the show has tended to be a bit on the negative side, particularly when compared with HBO’s House of the Dragon, which aired around the same time in 2022. Both were prequels to earlier hits, based on major fantasy franchises, spinning out fairly brief source material into something much longer and more detailed. But where House of the Dragon pulled fans back into George R.R. Martin’s Westeros after the last few seasons of Game of Thrones put many off, The Rings of Power was perceived as a...

A fresh set of actors are about to be enrolled in what the film series cast cheekily nicknamed ‘the Harry Potter Pension plan’. US streamer Max’s plan to re-adapt the Potter books into a TV show running for 10 consecutive years and starting in 2025/6 should keep the lucky new cast in greasepaint and copies of The Stage indefinitely.
But who will they be? Lead characters Harry, Ron and Hermione will almost certainly be played by unknowns, but the Hogwarts ensemble – Dumbledore, Snape, McGonagall, Hagrid and co. – will be picked from the current crop of British acting talent, just like their counterparts were over two decades ago. Who working today could follow in the footsteps of Sir Michael Gambon, Alan Rickman, Dame Maggie Smith, Robbie Coltrane and the rest?

Peter Jackson‘s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy amassed 28 Oscar nominations and 17 wins between the three films while the prequel “The Hobbit” series garnered a further seven nominations. Out of those 35 Academy Award bids, however, only one came for acting. That was for Sir Ian McKellen when he was nominated in 2002 for Best Supporting Actor for “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.” It was Jim Broadbent who won that category that year, for “Iris,” so Middle Earth performers have been overlooked somewhat for their part in the huge success of the fantasy film series. In 2004, “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” became the film with joint-most Oscar wins of all time with a whopping 11 victories, matching the total tallies of both “Titanic” and “Ben-Hur.” Those 11 Academy Awards capped off a hugely successful trilogy of movies that collectively snagged 28 Oscar nominations and 17 wins in total. But yet… Peter Jackson‘s film series, adapted from the work of J.R.R. Tolkien, is so, so good that, well, it could have won more. That sounds greedy and over the top, of course, but if you take a look at each film’s nominations, it’s actually very feasible that any one of the three films could have turned the bid into a win. So, with that in mind, here are five Oscar nominations that “The Lord of the Rings” films could and perhaps should have turned into victories.

You can’t buy Terry Pratchett’s first novel – or rather, you can, but it will cost you. A first edition of the original 1971 version of The Carpet People will set you back somewhere between £400 and £1000; Forum Auctions have one on sale with a guide price of £400 – £600. You can, of course, buy the current version of the book, and “first editions” of that one might be going for less than £5. But that is the version that was edited and re-published in 1992, after the original had gone out of print. And it is not quite the same book.
In his introduction to the 1992 revised edition, Pratchett said The Carpet People “had two authors, and they were both the same person”. When the Discworld novels began to sell and demand for Pratchett’s debut novel went up, he told the publishers that he needed to do some re-writes, and the resulting new...

It is well known that The Lord of the Rings is a very long book, so long that the original publishers insisted on dividing it into three volumes. And so it is hardly surprising that not every character in the book made it into the major screen adaptations directed and produced by Peter Jackson, and often with good reason. Many of them do not need any special mention; there’s no need to list every Orc that did not get individually named or every minor Hobbit character at Bilbo’s birthday party.
However, some of the characters who did not quite make the cut could have made great additions to the screen versions, if only time had allowed. Here are characters who did not make it into the films, but who we’d love to see have their day on the big screen, or if anyone ever makes a long-running...

Of all of the brilliant films in the fantasy genre, none are more celebrated and widely praised as The Lord of the Rings. The original Lord of the Rings trilogy by Director Peter Jackson is one of the most impressive and noteworthy works of cinema of all time. With special effects and VFX that were way ahead of their time, and an ensemble cast of committed and talented actors to bring the characters that J.R.R. Tolkien created- the movie was bound for success from the start. However, some of the more iconic moments in the first film, The Fellowship of the Ring, were simple cases of catching lightning in a bottle. Take for example the scene toward the end of the film when the fellowship is making a dangerous attempt to take a shortcut through the mines of Moria. This leads to the iconic ending of the film where Gandalf...

It’s written tastefully, and some of the most profound messages are conveyed with touches as understated as a slouch in posture or a knowing smile. The cast suffered broken bones, dislocations, and numerous cuts and bruises.
