Harking back to those erotic thrillers of yore, especially from the 1980s and 90s, writer-director Joy Wilkinson’s 7 Keys, her debut feature, starts out full of promise and potential — much like the impromptu hook-up that gets the plot rolling. Unfortunately, like many an ill-starred love match, what follows is disappointing as things evolve in a lurid and yet strangely predictable direction. But while it all goes sour and south in the last act, there are definitely sparks of originality in the early running, supported by a brace of strong performances from Emma McDonald and Billy Postlethwaite, who deserve better than what the script gives them to work with.
Premiering in the Visions section at SXSW, this low-budget striver of a feature may find berths with streamers, and ought to at least attract attention from casting directors looking for new talents.

Wayman Bannerman and Micah McDonald dressed five celebrity clients for Oscars 2024: nominees Jon Batiste, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Colman Domingo, presenter Regina King and Olivia Munn. But two days before the show, the star-styling duo’s stress levels remained firmly set to zero.
The secret? “Pre-planning, pre-planning, pre-planning,” McDonald told The Hollywood Reporter on Friday evening. “We made PDFs mapping everything out, even down to how many minutes it takes to get between hotels.”
“At the [Dec. 3] Academy Museum Gala, we had nine people attending,” Bannerman added. “That went quite well, so we also knew we could use that as our awards-season fire drill.”
Their client Batiste — a best original song Oscars 2024 nominee for “It Never Went Away” from American Symphony — already enjoyed a reputation as someone who loved fashion before joining Wayman + Micah’s impressive roster. “We started working with Jon in the latter part of last year,...

Taylor Swift’s father is being accused of attacking a paparazzo on Tuesday morning in Sydney after exiting a boat with the pop superstar just hours after her final performance of her Eras Tour in Australia.
Scott Swift has been a fixture as his daughter’s sold-out shows have moved from city to city. On Tuesday, the 71-year-old dubbed Papa Swift by fans allegedly charged at a photographer after he and his daughter disembarked a boat around 2:30 a.m. in Sydney. Authorities in New South Wales confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that an incident at Sydney’s Neutral Bay Wharf was reported in the early hours of Tuesday, but declined to name those involved in the alleged attack.

These days, "Batman Returns" rightfully gets its due. But Tim Burton's sequel to his 1989 effort, "Batman," was assailed by critics upon its release, who felt that it was either too dark, too overcrowded with characters, lacking in plot, or just plain weird. Even many fans were ticked off by the Burton-ness of the whole thing and felt the director and screenwriter, Daniel Waters, had strayed too far from the core of the Dark Knight.
In a way, they were right. Burton had let his freak flag fly, making his own movie and not necessarily a Batman movie. Waters admitted as much after a recent screening of "Returns," saying (via IndieWire):
"It was a weird assignment in that I didn't need to please anyone but Tim Burton. Before the internet, you didn't have to go before a tribunal and say what you were doing — it was just two guys in a room riffing.

Despite bringing a very good team to Split, Croatia, the US team is out of the 2023 Davis Cup after both Tommy Paul and Mackenzie McDonald failed to win their singles matches.
This wasn't supposed to happen for the United States, and it's a pretty shocking result, even if they were in a very tricky group. They barely won on the first day against Croatia, got stunned by the Netherlands in the second tie, and now lost to Finland in their third tie.
Frances Tiafoe destroyed his racquet and lost his match on code violation , which is why McDonald got the nod on the final day. He faced Otto Virtanen earlier on Saturday but lost in a tight three-setter, making the Paul match a must-win for the country.
If he failed to beat Emil Ruusuvuori , they were out, and that's exactly what happened. Ruusuvuori is generally not the type of player...

Almost every woman has a story: A stranger who followed her through a parking garage. A cab driver who asked uncomfortably personal questions. A date who became frighteningly obsessive. A friend who wouldn’t take no for an answer. The frightening banality of these events is the engine that drives “Woman of the Hour,” the directorial debut from actress Anna Kendrick.
Based on the true story of serial killer Rodney Alcala — who was convicted in 1980 for the murders of seven women and girls, but is suspected of killing more than 100 — “Woman of the Hour” is a more mainstream study of the tension between heterosexual desire and implied violence also evoked in Jane Campion’s “In the Cut.” Unlike that film, however, “Woman of the Hour” leaves the erotics of this dilemma unexplored from the female point of view. The women in this film are not trying to square their attraction...

According to a Beatles audio engineer, John Lennon paid close attention when listening back to songs. Even though he derided some of The Beatles’ music after the band broke up, he was careful in the studio. While listening back to “Yellow Submarine,” Lennon realized that someone had made a mistake. His voice was missing from a part where it was meant to appear.
John Lennon realized his voice was missing from part of a Beatles song
The Beatles spent a good deal of time messing around in the studio while recording “Yellow Submarine.” Still, Lennon tried to keep them focused. He put a great deal of thought into the song and made several alterations. Not all of these made it into the song’s final version, though.
“At a certain point, John decided that the third verse needed some spicing up, so he dashed into the studio and began answering...

Loki‘s long-awaited second season grows closer with each passing day, and while many of the details surrounding the next chapter in the God of Mischief’s (Tom Hiddleston) story remain under wraps, one thing is for certain, he’s going to McDonald’s. Yes, Loki will head to the golden arches seemingly in search of Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) after leaving things unfinished between the duo in Season 1. As revealed in the Season 2 trailer, Sylvie is working at the fast food staple, albeit in a time not parallel to our own, instead opting for the 1980s. In celebration of the trip back in time, McDonald’s transformed one of its Brooklyn locations, outfitting it with retro decorations, Tva gear, and Loki and Sylvie’s costumes. The company’s historian, Mike Bullington, was also on-site to answer questions about McDonald’s role in Season 2. (Credit: Leah Williams) As an archivist, Bullington...

Stuart McDonald deeply admires Netflix’s first interactive movie Black Mirror: Bandersnatch. He describes the film as a dark journey wherein a viewer’s decisions in a gamer nerd’s life could lead to acid trips, existential torment, suicide, stuffed bunnies, and decapitated heads. But McDonald knows audiences will have a different reaction to the streaming behemoth’s first interactive romantic comedy, which he directed. In Choose Love, audiences wander into the pages of a fan fiction to decide which suitor is best for the film’s career-driven protagonist, Cami...

Perth, Aug 25 (Ians) Mitchell Marsh, Australia’s stand-in skipper for the upcoming white-ball tour of South Africa, believes that him stepping away from the captaincy of Perth Scorchers in the Bbl to focus on himself has helped in him being a bit wiser about how to be a leader in the sport.
“I think it’s been a progression over the last four or five years. When I gave up the Scorchers captaincy to focus on myself and where I was at in my life and my career, I didn’t think I had the capacity to captain any side at that point in time because I was just striving so much to try and hold my spot and get my spot back in the Test and one-day teams,” Marsh was quoted as saying bycodesports.com.au.

Eastbourne (England), July 1 (Ians) Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo overcame the Eastbourne rain and American Mackenzie McDonald to reach the final of the Rothesay International, here on Saturday.
The Argentine led McDonald 2-6, 7-5, 5-2 when the wet weather intervened on Friday evening, but he wasted little time in reaching his fourth tour-level final and first on grass when the action resumed on Saturday, advancing 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 in two hours and seven minutes.
Cerundolo, who has earned a career-best 27 wins this season, will continue the quest for his second tour-level crown when he meets second seed Tommy Paul or Frenchman Gregoire Barrere in the championship match later in the day.
Cerundolo won his only previous tour-level trophy on clay in Bastad last year.

Birmingham, June 15 (Ians) Australia head coach Andrew McDonald admitted seamer Scott Boland hasn’t done anything wrong in the chances he’s got with the Test team, saying he has given selectors a headache when picking the playing eleven for the highly-anticipated Ashes.
Boland played a key role in Australia bowling out India for 234 on day five of the World Test Championship Final at The Oval, taking out Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja in quick succession to set the base for a 209-run victory.

We won't see Rafael Nadal on a tennis court until 2024 but there is a very good chance that we will see him at least once more in the future.
The Spaniard injured himself earlier this year at a point where he extended too much trying to get to Mackenzie McDonald's forehand. He finished that match standing but that would be the last we see of him on a tennis court this year. An injury left him unable to recover on time as he tried various things in order to find himself on the court.
As popularly advocated by doctors, surgery is the last resort and Nadal only opted for one after it became apparent that there was no other way. According to reports the surgery proved a success. It was performed in Barcelona by a team of experts who had worked on other players such as Milos Raonic and Lleyton Hewitt in the past.

With her most recent Tony Award nomination, for her role in Adrienne Kennedy’s Ohio State Murders, Audra McDonald reached yet another career milestone.
The six-time Tony Award winner already holds the record for most competitive wins by an actor but has now tied the record for most nominated individual performer, with 10 nominations. This puts her in the same category as Chita Rivera and Julie Harris.
McDonald, who is also the only person to win awards in all four Tony acting categories, says this nomination comes as an “incredible honor,” particularly because of the recognition it gives to Kennedy, a revered playwright who made her Broadway debut with the play at the age of 91.
In the play, which ran on Broadway from November through January, McDonald played writer Suzanne Alexander, who returns to Ohio State University to give a lecture on the violence in her writing. As she speaks, Alexander...

Sebastian Korda made a good start in Paris beating compatriot Mackenzie McDonald in the first round and it's his first win since coming back from injury.
Korda injured himself at the Australian Open at a time when he was playing really strong tennis. After taking out Medvedev in Melbourne, Korda ran into injury issues and had to retire from his following match. The American then missed a couple of big events including Indian Wells, Miami and Monte Carlo but he made a return recently.
His first match back wasn't good and was a losing effort but he's now back in the winner's circle with a solid performance against McDonald. Despite not playing tennis, Korda worked on many things, mainly his body which he developed under the tutelage of noted trainer Jez Green.

Melbourne, May 24 (Ians) Australia head coach Andrew McDonald said he’s been mightily impressed, though not surprised, by all-rounder Michael Nesers form for Glamorgan in the ongoing season of County Championship, saying the team is aware of what he can do in red-ball cricket.
As of now, Neser has scored 311 runs and taken 19 wickets, with scores of 123, 86 and 90 so far being a standout from his time in the county championship.
Neser was left out of the initial 17-man Australia squad for the Wtc final and Ashes, but is set to join the team camp ahead of the one-off championship final against India.
“It (Neser’s county form) is very impressive. As I said, it’s not surprising though as we know what he can do. He had an outstanding Sheffield Shield year last year, I think it was 40-odd wickets averaging less than 20.

New Delhi, May 24 (Ians) Australia men’s head coach Andrew McDonald has backed David Warner to retain his spot at the top of the order, insisting he can play a significant part during the upcoming Icc World Test Championship (Wtc) final against India and Ashes series with England.
Despite being named in Australia’s squad for the World Test Championship final and the first two Ashes Tests, Warner’s inclusion in the latter matches seemed uncertain as selection chief George Bailey did not provide a clear answer when asked about the opener’s chances of playing.
Warner passed fifty just once in his last 15 Test innings before his dominant double-century against South Africa at the McG during the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne last year.
He registered scores of 1, 10 and 15 in India during Border Gavaskar Trophy before being sent home to recover from a fractured elbow in February this year.

Warner passed fifty just once in his last 15 Test innings before his dominant double-century against South Africa at the McG during the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne last year.

New Delhi, April 20 (Ians) In what is a fresh blow to Rafael Nadal’s French Open preparations, the 22-time Grand Slam champion on Thursday announced his withdrawal from the Madrid Open due to his ongoing injury concerns.
The 36-year-old had also withdrawn from the Indian Wells Masters and Miami Open, Monte Carlo Masters as well as the ongoing Barcelona Open as he is still recovering from a grade 2 injury in the iliopsoas muscle in his left leg and he continues to focus on returning to full fitness.
“As you know I suffered an important injury in Australia of the psoas muscle. Initially, it had to be a six-to-eight-week recovery period and we are now on fourteen. The reality is that the situation is not what we would have expected,” Nadal said in a video he released on social media on Thursday.

Exclusive: Lbi Entertainment has signed BAFTA Award-nominated writer, director and producer John Lee Hancock for management, Deadline has learned.
Best known for such his gift for guiding big-name stars like Sandra Bullock, Tom Hanks and Michael Keaton toward major critical and commercial success with films like The Blindside, Saving Mr. Banks and The Founder, Hancock’s titles as a director have collectively grossed nearly $600M worldwide.
A sports drama written and directed by Hancock, which brought Bullock her first Oscar, The Blind Side adapted Michael Lewis’ 2006 book of the same name, which told the story of Michael Oher, a homeless youth who rose to NFL glory with the help of the caring family that took him in as their own.
The Hancock-helmed The Founder starred Keaton as ruthless McDonald’s empire builder Ray Kroc, while the director’s Disney drama Saving Mr. Banks told the story of author P.L.

Exclusive: Channel 5 is on the brink of finding a new producer for its next Jane McDonald and Susan Calman shows. This follows owner Paramount Global’s decision to close the Viacom International Studios (Vis) UK unscripted division, revealed by Deadline last month.
Deadline understands that Daisybeck Studios, which makes some of Channel 5’s biggest hits including The Yorkshire Vet and Our Yorkshire Farm, is extremely close to taking on the work with two of the channel’s highest-profile presenters. Based in Leeds, eOne-owned Daisybeck is a trusted Channel 5 supplier that has made hundreds of hours of shows for the channel including many that focus on the outfit’s native Yorkshire.
The move comes as Paramount begins the process of apportioning dozens of hours of Vis’s factual programing to the UK indie sector.

We all felt doomsday looming over us when Covid-19 spread rapidly in March 2020. HBO’s all-archival documentary Time Bomb Y2K reminds us that, pre-pandemic, the world last witnessed this level of mass hysteria in the late 1990s (even though the 2003 Sars outbreak was more directly related). In the years preceding 2000 computer engineers realized a mass-scale glitch within electronic systems would incorrectly update the year from 1999 to 1900 as the new millennium began because most computer systems only store the last two digits of a year when recording calendar data. Soon theories about how this would lead to global information systems collapsing like wildfire. Hysteria ensued, prompting businesses to go berserk over tackling this problem and civilians to panic as they sought approaches to survive.
Co-directed by debut directors Brian Becker and Marley McDonald, and executive-produced by Penny Lane, Time Bomb Y2K is a reminder to not rely too much on technology.

Motion Content Group, an industrious producer and co-financier of Love Island, Wynonna Earp and some 1,800 other series globally, is rebranding as GroupM Motion Entertainment in North America.
The move comes amid a broader pivot toward premium programming.

Border Gavaskar Trophy: With Warner yet to recover, Australia have to take big calls for Indore Test
New Delhi. Feb 21 (Ians) The touring Australia team management in India is facing a big question on the continuation of another key player on the current tour as opener David Warner is still doubtful for the third Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy and for the rest of the series.
Warner had suffered a concussion and was substituted by Matt Renshaw and it was later revealed a hairline fracture in his left elbow, which puts him in doubt for the rest of the series.
With Australia’s batters collapsing in a heap for an embarrassing six-wicket defeat in the second Test in New Delhi within three days, they have nine days to not only recover from the psychological fallout of the defeat but also put together a potent squad for the third Test to be held at Indore from March 1.

We talk about snubs all the time when discussing awards. With only a fixed number of slots for each category and only one possible winner, someone is always going to be on the outside looking in. But when it happens enough times to someone deserving, one truly has to wonder what it is that voters aren’t seeing.
For years, critics and fans alike were baffled by numerous voting bodies consistently overlooking the tremendous work of “Better Call Saul” star Rhea Seehorn, who brought layers of complexity to mostly by-the-book lawyer Kim Wexler throughout the show’s stellar six-season run on AMC. The Critics Choice Awards, while late to the game, has actually recognized Seehorn more often than other groups, having first nominated her for Best Drama Supporting Actress for her work in the show’s fourth season in 2018. Brisbane, Dec 13 (Ians) Australia have decided to include Scott Boland ahead of Michael Neser as the third pacer for the first Test against South Africa at the Gabba starting on Saturday (December 17), coach Andrew McDonald has confirmed.
Both Boland and Neser were included in Australia’s squad for the day/night Test against West Indies at the Adelaide Oval, which the hosts won to seal the series, in the absence of the injured Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc.
Both of them had done well in the match and it came down to choosing one and the Australian team management opted for Boland ahead of Neser. With Hazlewood still unavailable, Boland with partner Cummins and Starc as the third pacer against South Africa.
“Expecting Scott to take that spot at the Gabba,” McDonald told reporters ahead of Australia’s departure for Brisbane. “That’s the running line, and he’s done nothing wrong.

The AMC Networks shake-up has laid claim to its first victim.

“Saturday Night Live” opened the first new show in three weeks with a look at how the GOP is responding to Herschel Walker’s tight runoff Senate race in Georgia, with Kenan Thompson memorably reprising his role as the former NFL running back who keeps going from gaffe to gaffe.
The “SNL” cold open began with Mitch McConnell (James Austin Johnson), Marsha Blackburn (Cecily Strong) and John Cornyn (Mikey Day) sitting in a room at the Capitol, where Walker was summoned to discuss strategy. “Hey there Mr. McDonald’s, sorry I was late I was having too much fun in that free merry-go-round,” Thompson’s Walker said to Johnson’s McConnell, mistaking a revolving door for a ride.
The sketch then played out with Walker responding incorrectly to pretty much everything McConnell, Blackburn and Cornyn had to say.
When vote-by-mail was mentioned, Walker responded, “You gotta remember, they still gotta count votes by female.

The moon colony is closing down as AMC+ will not proceed with a second season of Moonhaven. Word of the cancellation comes four months after the dystonic sci-fi series was renewed for a second season and days after AMC Networks announced sweeping cost-cutting measures as CEO Christina Spade stepped down, which included laying off 20 of its U.S. staff, and write-downs for up to 475 million as it restructures its business. Up to 400 million of that is for content-related moves the company calls “strategic programming assessments”
In a SEC filing, AMC Networks said that “programming assessments pertain to a broad mix of owned and licensed content, including legacy television series and films that will no longer be in active rotation on the company’s linear or digital platforms.”
The reverse of Moonhaven’s renewal decision is part of that effort, I hear.

In recent years "Batman Returns" has been getting the recognition it always deserved, and honestly, it's about damn time. There'll always be a contingent of bat-fans who hate depictions of Batman killing, alongside those that feel "Returns" is too much of a Tim Burton movie and not enough of a Batman movie. But as the growing love shows, Burton's nightmare fairytale remains the most engrossing, haunting, and darkly beautiful Batman movie, dare I say even just movie, I've seen. Bo Welch's production design remains the best on-screen Gotham yet (closely followed by Anton Furst's industrial hellscape from 1989's "Batman"), making for an all-enveloping atmosphere that has stayed with me since I first saw the film on my parent's rented Crt. It's no wonder Burton remains proud of his "weird experiment" 30 years on.
But there's more to what makes the movie great than the beautifully crafted Gotham set, which...

One of the greatest mysteries that ever faced investigative reporter Irwin Maurice Fletcher (“Fletch” to his friends) is why there haven’t been more movies featuring the character. Gregory Mcdonald’s popular Fletch novels, of which there are 11, were practically all dialogue. The author’s breezy style of repartee — which owed more to Hollywood’s screwball comedy tradition than film noir — should have lent itself well to screenplays, but only two ever got made: Back in the ’80s, we got a couple that positioned Chevy Chase as a goofy sleuth with a penchant for disguise, and others have been trying to revive him ever since.
Reborn at last with Jon Hamm in the role and Greg Mottola (“Superbad”) behind the camera, “Confess, Fletch” makes no attempt to channel what Chase did before, instead going back to Mcdonald’s philosophy that mysteries were but an excuse for a sardonic reporter to wind up other people,...

Sydney, Sep 12 (Ians) Australia’s men’s cricket coach Andrew McDonald has expressed satisfaction over the team’s progress and depth in One-day Internationals (ODIs) ahead of next year’s World Cup.
Australia has won back-to-back Odi series against New Zealand and Zimbabwe and have done even while the team is undergoing changes with captain Aaron Finch announcing his retirement.
The issue facing Australia now is to find a replacement for Finch as a white-ball skipper and opener.
McDonald said they have found some answers to these questions and will be trying a few more things before taking a final decision.

Gabe Polsky’s new acid Western “Butcher’s Crossing,” premiering at the Toronto Film Festival, takes place on the vast fertile plains of hubris, where if you stare far enough into the horizon, you can probably see your own uppance come.
Based on a novel by John Williams takes place in Kansas in 1874, where a young wide-eyed student named Will Andrews has abandoned his Ivy League education in favor of seeing the country and palling around with buffalo hunters. It’s a decision that old man McDonald, a fur trader and distant friend of the family, thinks is intensely ill-advised, so he warns him — in a tone so condescending it was practically guaranteed to have the opposite of its intended effect — that following this path will lead Will to soul-obliterating ruin.

Anna Kendrick is a woman of many talents — she's a great actor, a fantastic singer, a hilarious Twitter follow, a wonderful Barbie spokesperson, and now she can finally add "director" to her growing list of multi-hyphenates. The star of films like "A Simple Favor," "Pitch Perfect," "Up in the Air," and a flurry of teen films that people mock her for having starred in will be directing, starring in, and producing the true-crime thriller "The Dating Game," based on the real story of 1970s would-be bachelorette Cheryl Bradshaw. The script comes from Ian McDonald, whose original draft "Sheryl & Rodney'' wound up on the prestigious unproduced list of screenplays, The Black List.
For those unaware of the story behind the film, Kendrick's Cheryl Bradshaw was a real-life contestant on "The Dating Game," who ultimately picked contestant number 1, a man by the name of Rodney Alcala. He seemed charming and handsome enough...

Townsville (Queensland), Sep 4 (Ians) Australia men’s cricket team coach Andrew McDonald has indicated the three-match One-day International series against New Zealand at Cairns, beginning September 6, will be the beginning of the process of streamlining the side for the 50-over World Cup in India next year.
Australia recently won the Odi series against Zimbabwe at Townsville 2-1, but the visitors too had some big takeaways, managing to upset the hosts, with part-time spinner Ryan Burl taking five wickets in the final Odi.
The three-wicket loss for Australia was a wakeup call and McDonald has insisted the Odi series against No.1 ranked New Zealand will kick-start a series of minor tweaks in the side in the run-up to the showpiece global event next year.
Australia made just one change during the series win against Zimbabwe with Mitchell Marsh returning to Perth to nurse a minor ankle injury. Left-arm spinner Ashton Agar...

The first of author Gregory McDonald's "Fletch" novels was published in 1974. The title character of the McDonald's nine books was Irwin Maurice Fletcher, an ex-Marine investigative journalist with a penchant for disguises. Fletch is a bit of a slovenly cad, and he is constantly outrunning attorneys who seek alimony payments from various ex-wives. The first novel involves Fletch investigating drug traffic on the Los Angeles beaches as well as the mysterious, well-paid request from a dying millionaire that Fletch euthanize him.
"Fletch" was very loosely adapted to film in 1985 with Chevy Chase in the title role and with Michael Ritchie directing. The film was less a rundown detective story than a light comedy, and a lot of "Fletch" focuses on Chase's disguises and the comedian's ability to improvise. The story -- the investigation of a millionaire asking to be euthanized -- was kept intact. The film was a...
